Parking can become a serious source of aggrivation. Yes, you think you’ve found the perfect place to call home, but have you found a home for your car (or cars) too? Sometimes apartments come with parking included. That’s a great value. If you’re a two-car family there’s often an additional fee, but factor that into the price of rent. Like rent, the price for parking is directly related to the property’s location. You’ll find parking charges in suburbs and small towns tend to be a lot less expensive than parking in big cities and high-density urban
neighbourhoods. Some apartments stipulate street parking only. This varies by municipality across the country. Some have bylaws prohibiting parking at certain times and days. Others simply require you to purchase a permit. Talk to other residents and see if a car-free family will rent their spot to you. But also consider– maybe you’re moving close enough to the places that you work and play that you can ditch the cars altogether. CORYDON AVENUE FLOWS like a
lazy river. Braced by black metal archways, it connects Osborne Village and Confusion Corner at its eastern end to just past Stafford Street at its western edge. Wildly popular in the summer, this district pumps in the heart of Crescentwood. It’s a great area to get out and enjoy. Life on Corydon Avenue is always hopping. Traffic is slow as much because of the people watchers cruising past as for the pedestrians themselves. People like to live on Corydon for the love of Little Italy, for the availability
of artsy services and trendy restaurants and for the proximity to downtown. Corydon Avenue is lit with long strings of lights like a marina or market in Italy. Proudly connected to community and known for pasta or pizza, it is also home to stacks of sushi places, cute boutiques and trendy nail and hair services. Business people make it a standard stop for coffee during the day and skateboarders or motorcyclists ride by after hours. The crowd on Corydon love their lattes and gelati which can be found on almost every corner.
Residents and business people might pay a little more for a high end treat, but there’s also lots of competition and a great selection of treats and eats for every craving and flavour. Although Corydon Avenue is adjacent to some main thoroughfares going downtown and to the airport, it is congested. Easy ways to warm
up!

MORE ADVICE ONLINE FROM BLISTERING HOT TO FREEZING COLD — it always seems to happen overnight, doesn’t it? If your rental unit was too hot during the summer, you might now be worried it will be too cold during the winter. Though keep in mind – although the landlord doesn’t have a responsibility to provide you with air conditioning, they certainly do have a responsibility to keep you warm during Canada’s colder months – generally above 21 to 22°C. But still, there are times you’ll want to warm up, and with winter around the corner, it’s never too early to prep your home for the cold. We all complain about it, but winter can be really fun! It’s just no fun to come home to a cold space. Don’t worry — there are plenty of cost-effective ways to warm up a cold home that won’t violate your rental agreement (or make your life too difficult)!
Put down draft stoppers Draft stoppers (also known as door snakes) act as barriers between the indoors and the cold outdoors. They are cheap to buy and easy enough to make if you’re more of a DIYer (just stuff them and sew them). It’s a small effort to put in for great results — in drafty apartments, you wouldn’t believe how much freezing air is drifting in through the gap at the bottom of the front door.

Cover your windows with insulation film Insulation film is basically Saran wrap for your windows — and it works wonders! I personally use it to cover most of my windows in the winter, and the difference in temperature can be felt immediately. As you’re placing it around the window, you’ll be able to see how strong the air coming in really is, because the draft will create a bubble beneath the wrap. Choose wisely when deciding which windows to cover because you will not be able to open them once they are insulated. Cover cold surfaces Put down a rug or two on your cold floors. If your ceramic tile is freezing during the winter, a nice rug to warm the feet can do a lot. Hardwood floors also get cold during the winter, so a warm rug could be a welcome addition there too. Putting up thick or layered curtains can also keep warmth in. Cellular shades are a good option too, as they let light in, but tend to keep the cold out.
Reverse your ceiling fans and buy a good space heater If you have ceiling fans, reverse the direction of the blades. This will bring the warm air down and help keep the temperature in your home from plummeting. You might still need a little help staying warm, so invest in a good space heater — just check your lease to confirm you’re allowed to have small appliances like heaters – especially if you aren’t responsible for paying for utilities. Get creative I’ve lived in a few cold apartments, and I’ve found that it’s all about knowing the little tricks. Once you’ve insulted the windows, sealed the gaps around the house and added warmth wherever you can, all you need to do is throw on some slippers and get creative. Sleep with a hot water bottle, microwave your socks, warm your towel on the radiator and leave the oven door open for a little while after you’ve cooked a meal or two!

Six steps to finding
a great rental
WHEN IT COMES TO FINDING A GREAT RENTAL,
knowing your wants and needs before you hit the streets will simplify your search. Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. (CMHC) offers some tips to help you find the right place to call “home.” 1. Identify your rental needs. What is your budget? Which neighbourhood do you want to live in? How many bedrooms do you need? What amenities are important to you? Make a list of your needs and preferences to help narrow down that great rental opportunity. 2. Ask questions. Have a list of questions ready to ask the landlord. Is parking included in the cost of rent? What about utilities? Ask about the lease and terms. Be clear on any policies surrounding pets, smoking, or anything else that may affect your lifestyle. 3. First impressions count. Make a good impression when meeting with the landlord. Dress neatly and arrive on time. 4. Take notes. If you will be viewing more than one apartment, write down the key features of each place so you can compare them later. Better yet, use your smartphone to snap photos for reference. 5. Review your lease agreement carefully. When you find a great rental and are ready to move forward, typically you’ll sign a lease. Rental agreements vary, but they generally include the names of the landlord and tenant, the address of the property, the amount of the rent, what is included in that cost, the rent payment due date, the deposit amount paid, the term of the rental period, and details like who is responsible for upkeep. ensure all this information is outlined. 6. Take notes – again. Once you’ve signed your lease, it’s time to move in! But before you do, you and your landlord should inspect your new home together. Document all issues so you won’t be held liable for any preexisting damage when you leave. You can even take photos to document the condition of the unit before you move in.
