y first job fresh out of university I worked the night shift. I slept from about 6am to 2pm. So imagine my chagrin when a pianist and music instructor moved into the apartment below. Of course, her piano was directly beneath my bed. Her first pupils arrived by 9am. When she wasn’t giving classes, she was practicing. Several letters and phone calls between tenants, the landlord and the pianist later, we all came to an agreement. There would only be morning classes once a week, she would practice at her rehearsal studio and we would not hold her piano playing against her. By that point I was ready for a day job anyway... You can’t always pick your neighbours, but you can pick your community. It’s a huge decision so don’t make a hasty one. There’s nothing worse than moving and finding it’s not the right fit – whether it’s noise issues, parking issues or just general renters’ remorse. Sometimes your concerns can be easily remedied by a friendly discussion with the neighbours, sometimes it’s better to have the management get involved. Rarely, but unfortunately, sometimes the only solution is to move. Nobody wants that. Instead, some diligence when on the apartment hunt can go a long way. If you work nights, make a great deal of noise, have specific need or concerns, discuss this with the landlord. Find out if it’s the building for you. It may add time and effort to your search, but it will help you find that perfect place. That perfect apartment is waiting, we’re here to help you find it. Here a re a few tips to help you avoid finding damaged items at your destination: 1. Consider purchasing boxes from your mover. The most common packing mistake we see is people getting free boxes at the grocery or liquor store and then putting too much weight in them. For example, using a large box to pack books and magazines may make it too heavy to lift, and the box might break during the move due to the weight. Use this rule of thumb: the heavier the item, the smaller the box. Be choosy about your boxes; free boxes from a grocery store that have been used to ship produce could contain insect larvae that may transfer to your belongings. 2. Be realistic about the number of boxes you need. Depending on how long you have lived in your current location, you will most likely underestimate your boxes requirement.Often, we hear of renters who think 40 or 50 boxes will be enough, and then realize they need upwards of 80, two days before moving day. 3. Start packing early and be completely packed when the movers arrive. Sometimes we arrive at a customer’s home and they’re not packed. There’s nothing more frustrating than trying to move a customer’s belongings while they are attempting to shove items into boxes and we get in each others’ way. This also interferes with the optimal loading of the moving truck. We have a loading system where the first things we place in the truck are light items such as chairs, lampshades, cushions, etc; we place these items in the ‘attic’ (the area over the cab) of the truck. We can get lots of light items up there and they stay secure.

wrapped mattresses against the box wall and secure everything with tie-off straps to keep belongings from getting jostled during the move. If you’re not completely packed and ready on moving day, we can’t create that box wall early on and, this decreases the capacity of the items that can be moved at one time. It also eats up precious time and, therefore, money! 4. Think ahead. Begin packing items you don’t use daily. As you pack your boxes move them to the front of your apartment and stack them along a wall near the front door. Having them by the door, organized and ready to go, instead of having movers go back and forth to each room can shave 10 to 20 seconds off the time for each box. Saving 20 seconds per box can save lots of time and money.

5. Consider having your moving company pack for you. We are skilled, have more experience and have standard-size small, medium and large boxes that are designed to fit into our trucks to create a perfect box wall for optimum efficiency and safety. So, when it comes to moving, forethought goes a long way. Because your belongings mean a lot to you, take extra care when packing so that they arrive at your destination safely.

Having a baby is an exciting, but a nerve-wracking experience. You want to make sure that your little angel is protected at all times. Here are some strategies TheRentersGuide.ca to help you keep your home safe and sound. TheRentersGuide.ca

Make sure your electrical outlets are covered. There are many kinds of outlet covers like swivel ones, ones that just stick into each outlet, and plates that slide back – choose the one that is right for you.

Install reliable smoke detectors and make sure that the batteries are working.

•

Use doorknob covers on doors to non-childproofed areas (like the bathrooms and laundry room). Round doorknob covers are easy to find however, you may find yourself searching for ones that fit long doorknobs.

•

Don’t use toys or crib bumpers in the crib - your baby could suffocate. And never use an electric blanket for a child, it could cause a fire.

•

Never leave a child unattended in the bathtub.

•

There are products that cover the faucet to avoid burns from hot water. Make sure your bathtub has a non-skid mat or pads to avoid slips.

•

Consider a toilet seat lock so your child can’t stick their head in there.

•

Lock up all medications, alcoholic beverages and cleaning products. Make sure matches and lighters are out of reach. Use cabinet locks to secure these items.

is money. Don’t waste my time. There are all kinds of clichés about time, and the sad part is, they are all true. The time you waste is time you will never get back. Spending time on tasks you don’t enjoy is practically a crime. Be conscious of the way you spend your time and streamline tasks to save time where you can. That extra time can be used for the better things in life. As John Lennon said “Life is what happens when you are busy making other plans.” Find it fast by clear labeling You can retrieve anything you need quickly and effortlessly when you store related items in clear (see-through) containers and label the contents with large, easy-to-read labels. You can create labels using a label maker, computer-generated adhesive labels or handwritten shipping labels attached with clear packing tape (use a thick black marker). Time management I’ve always maintained that the task expands to fit the time allotted for it, especially for perfectionists. But there is a point of diminishing returns on the time invested. When you begin a task or project, decide how much time it’s worth spending on the activity and stick to that (set a timer to help keep you on track). Understand your high/low energy periods and schedule your daily tasks accordingly Tackle tough tasks during high-energy periods and less-demanding tasks during low ones. Also consider your work style when planning your day; do you work best in short bursts or long stretches? You’ll be amazed at how much more you can accomplish by keeping your style in mind when planning your daily activities. What is your time worth? Do you wish you had more time yet find yourself spending time to save money? If you spend hours doing unpleasant tasks that you could hire someone to do, or drive across the city to save a few dollars on a grocery store special, you are squandering a precious commodity. Average people spend time to save money; successful people spend money TheRentersGuide.ca to save time. Look at it this way: You can always make more money but you can never have more than 24 hours in a day. An extra hour I was listening to the radio when the announcer asked “If you had an extra hour in your day, what would you do with it?” My first thought was that another question needs to be asked before I could answer that one, and it is: “What can you do to free up an extra hour in your day?” I decided to hire someone to do my bookkeeping so I could free up time to take my dog for a leisurely walk instead of rushing. I challenged my daughter with this question and she decided to give up watching “Survivor” this year so she could learn a dance solo for the studio’s competitive program. How we spend our time is our choice; we need to choose consciously. So, “what can you do to free up an extra hour in your day?” Save steps Store items near the place you use them. For example, I keep a bottle of vinegar and water and a roll of paper towel in the kitchen and in each of the bathrooms. When a quick cleanup is required, it takes less time and energy because the supplies are handy. One of my most-often used items in the house is a basket I keep in the hall closet on a shelf at waist height. I toss my keys and sunglasses in it so I never have to go searching for them when I’m rushing out the door. I also have a drawer there for my dog’s leash and bags – so handy! Find it fast It’s easy to forget where we put the items we don’t use on a regular basis. Create an inventory that details the storage location of items you use only on a seasonal or occasional basis. Keep the document on your computer with a shortcut on your desktop. As the list grows, you can always find the information quickly by using the Edit/Find feature in MS Word. Now you never have to worry about remembering where you put your passport! Consolidate tasks to save time For example, return calls and emails in batches rather than interrupting yourself throughout the day.
