The next storey I have a weird thing about elevators - and I know I’m not alone. I’m not afraid of them by any means, I’m just not a fan. The TV monitors that flash news clips and fun trivia have slightly improved the situation, but I still find them awkward and uncomfortable. Plus, I hate the wait. I’m impatient. It’s a personal thing, so yes, I dislike having to ride elevators. I admit to it. But it’s not just the wait, it’s the waiting with people. I’m a very social person, and sometimes I like to chat - but sometimes I just don’t. I want to come and go without having to chat. Is that so wrong? And then there’s the anti-social aspect of them. You get on and off with people you see every day, your neighbours, yet everyone acts like total strangers, staring at the numbers as they light up – like that’s so intriguing. But we feign interest just so that we don’t have to make eye contact

– or any contact at all. And then there’s the animosity that poor elevator etiquette can cause. I find that, especially in highrises, and when you have to rely on the elevators day in and day out, there are some real pet peeves that can quickly get under your skin and can damage relationships between neighbours. Holding everyone up; kids pressing all the buttons; not holding the elevator when someone is running for it; talking too loud; staring. Is your elevator etiquette up to par? Aim for a safe, secure move By Chuck Resnick

WHEN YOU MOVE your home or office, of course you want your belongings to arrive at their destination location safely, with nothing broken or misplaced. But there are other forms of safety and security that are also worth important consideration, whether you are moving yourself or hiring a professional mover. For example, Items are being transferred to and from the truck or vehicles. How can you be sure nothing will go missing when everyone who is dong the moving is in the house or apartment? At Two Men and a Truck Canada, we dispatch movers in teams of three so that one person can be with the truck at all times, supervising the job and keeping an eye on your belongings. Should you be moving yourself, be careful running your own move with friends and family that those involved donâ€™t get so caught up in carrying items in and out they leave vehicles unattended. This is particularly important when moving out of and into an apartment building or condominium, when elevator trips may mean those carrying the items are gone from the moving vehicle for extended periods of time. Another safety aspect is ensuring that no one gets hurt during your move. Professional movers are trained to lift correctly and have strapping and other aides that help to move bulky items. We also understand fragility and treat delicate items

with the care they deserve. Untrained people who help you may inadvertently cause damage because they lack the know-how of how to move certain items. Movers have special packing materials, labels and loading/ unloading techniques in place to protect these cherished pieces. If you are planning a business move, it is wise to hire a professional mover and sit down with the move consultant to develop a plan. For example, long before the actual move, begin shredding unneeded documents to save time and money, and to avoid unwanted confusion at either end. Moving electronic storage equipment and servers can be tricky. Does your over have a strategy in place with information security as a goal? One approach may be to move critical servers in separate trucks so that all of the information would not be damaged in the unlikely event of a traffic accident. Speaking of sensitive or expensive cargo, whether moving home or office, itâ€™s a good idea to have specific items appraised and insured personally to protect them.

Be sure to create an inventory of these items, take photos of them and provide a copy to the mover. Another aspect of a move that clients may neglect is the ability of the drivers. People who choose a DIY move usually rent a truck or trailer, but are they actually skilled enough, experienced or even trained to drive the vehicle safely? If you are not used to driving with a heavy load in a vehicle it can be risky. A professional moving company provides trained drivers who are used to driving safely from point A to B with your belongings in tow. If you need to store items for a period of time, ask your mover if they have a storage facility that is climate controlled and insured against floods, fire, theft, and the like. A mover who offers full insurance with professional and bonded employees relieves you of the worry and stress of these kinds of safety and security issues. You can DIY, but in the end, is it worth it?

CORYDON AVENUE FLOWS like a

lazy river. Braced by black metal archways, it connects Osborne Village and Confusion Corner at its eastern end to just past Stafford Street at its western edge. Wildly popular in the summer, this district pumps in the heart of Crescentwood. It’s a great area to get out and enjoy. Life on Corydon Avenue is always hopping. Traffic is slow as much because of the people watchers cruising past as for the pedestrians themselves. People like to live on Corydon for the love of Little Italy, for the availability

of artsy services and trendy restaurants and for the proximity to downtown. Corydon Avenue is lit with long strings of lights like a marina or market in Italy. Proudly connected to community and known for pasta or pizza, it is also home to stacks of sushi places, cute boutiques and trendy nail and hair services. Business people make it a standard stop for coffee during the day and skateboarders or motorcyclists ride by after hours. The crowd on Corydon love their lattes and gelati which can be found on almost every corner.

Although Corydon Avenue is adjacent to some main thoroughfares going downtown and to the airport, it is congested. Oh no, you found bedbugs By Jackie Marchildon

IT’S EVERY RENTER’S WORST nightmare — finding bedbugs. They are creepy little buggers and they latch on like nobody’s business. Don’t worry, they have nothing to do with your cleanliness and it’s really just an unfortunate situation to be in. Here’s what you need to do.

1. Call your landlord and work with local pest control First things first — call your landlord. They will likely have a go-to company to call and an overall plan of action. Generally speaking, you’ll find that most residential tenancies acts will establish that it’s the landlord’s responsibility to take care of a bedbug problem — for instance, it falls under emergency repairs in British Columbia and under the landlord’s need to comply with municipal healthy and safety standards in Alberta. Technically, landlords could file a dispute against you as the tenant if they felt you caused the problem (but they would need to prove the bedbugs were actually your fault). The rates for bedbug removal services vary, but broadly, here’s what your landlord might expect. British Columbia — Quote for a chemical treatment for a one-bed unit from OnSite Pest Control*: 366$ Alberta — Quote for a chemical treatment for a one-bed unit from Responders Pest Control*: $350-$450 (depending on the level of infestation) Manitoba — Quote for a chemical treatment for one-bed unit from A1 Pest Solutions*: $375 (under 1,100 sq.ft.) Ontario — Quote for a chemical treatment for a one-bed unit from Bed Bug Exterminator Pro*: 360$ *Quotes are general (quoted over the phone or online) 2. Assess the situation and act accordingly How bad is the infestation? You don’t immediately need to throw everything

out in your unit while you wait for the exterminator to arrive. Sometimes putting infested items outside or in the freezer can kill the bedbugs, but it would need to be at least -19 degrees Celsius and you’d need to leave the items in the cold for at least four days. Even then, there is no guarantee the cold will kill them all. Wash everything you can in hot water and dry it all on the hottest dryer setting — mattress pads, bedding, clothing and curtains — everything you can. Place your clean items somewhere safe and sealed (use sealed plastic bags or bins with lids). Throw out anything you cannot wash. Steam clean your mattress if you think it’s salvageable. Otherwise, cut your losses and throw it out.

Wash everything you can in hot water and dry it all on the hottest dryer setting — mattress pads, bedding, clothing and curtains — everything you can.

3. Vacuum everything and everywhere Vacuum feverishly. Do not use a vacuum with a cloth bag because the bag can become infested. Bedbugs attach themselves to wood and fabric (and their eggs will stick to those surfaces too). Use a vacuum attachment to scrape all surfaces in your unit — including your bed if you’re keeping it. Vacuum any crack or crevice in your mattress, box spring, bed frame, furniture, in and around your baseboards, cushions, rugs, carpets, heating or air conditioning units, drawers — anything and everything must be vacuumed. Wash all vacuum attachments in hot water and detergent and store your vacuum in a sealed plastic bag. If your vacuum has a bag, remove it and throw it out in a plastic bag, outside of your home. If your vacuum doesn’t have a bag, wash the dust container as well as the attachments. All you have to do next is wait for pest control to arrive and officially rid you of the pesky little bloodsuckers!

YOU’RE TAKING THE PLUNGE INTO ENTREPRENEURSHIP. Now you need to make myriad decisions, starting with where in your home to set up your workspace. The right space can make all the difference to the success of your venture. Here are some considerations for effectiveness and productivity. First off is the actual location. How much space is required and the type of space available will dictate where to set up shop. Depending on your space, a den, spare bedroom or mudroom can easily suit this purpose. Claiming part of a basement could work as well. When a full room isn’t

available consider converting a large foyer or the space under a staircase. Enclosing a porch or a balcony may do the trick. At the very least – and if it’s all your apartment can handle, designate a corner of one room as work-only space. Ensure everyone knows this is a work-only area and off limits. A physical demarcation will assist with organization as well as support clear boundaries. Make a list of the needs and desires for the type of work you’re going to perform. You may prefer a space that offers such features as privacy, quiet, optimal ventilation, natural light, bright colours, artwork and an inspiring

view. Choose the elements that are crucial for you to be at your best. Fulfill the needs first; The majority of desires will follow. Let’s assume you need a desk, a phone and a computer. These require power, an Internet connection and lighting. Note the outlets and electricity available. Ensure there is enough power to handle a space heater or fan, computer, printer, desk lighting and whatever else you need all at once. Beware of tripping hazards like extension cords and power bars. If you will be seeing clients or colleagues in your space, there are other considerations. Check the local bylaws regarding signage and parking. The front walk will need to be well maintained with snow and ice removed when necessary. Clear entryways and preferably a direct route to the workspace rather than through living space are ideal. Ask friends and colleagues for their impressions and how you can make it more welcoming. Just as important is the mental space. Entering a workspace that meets your needs and is designated as such allows the mind to focus. When it’s both functional and pleasurable to be in, your work will flow.

Decoding Green Labels 101 A guide for consumers to navigate through all those ‘sustainable’ products

FROM “NATURAL” TEA, to “Green” cleaning supplies to “eco-friendly” clothing, there are endless products being marketed with claims that attempt to convince consumers that they are making the right decision when shopping. “Canadians are concerned about the state of our environment and worker conditions, and are opting for more sustainable, conscientious products and services,” says Laurie Simmonds, president and CEO of Green Living Enterprises. “With companies using various ‘Green’ claims and labels now more than ever, it can be difficult to distinguish between what looks and sounds ethical and sustainable, and what actually is.”

Product certifications alleviate this challenge for consumers, as any certified product has undergone a rigorous third party evaluation; examining everything from environmental impact, ingredient procurement, worker conditions and compensation to name few. Choosing products with the following labels will help you shop smarter and feel more confident about your buying power: While many may think it’s the most obvious, Fairtrade is often a confusing term. The Fairtrade mark means the ingredients in a product have

been produced by small-scale farmer organizations or plantations that meet social, economic and environmental standards. Equifruit for example, is the Canadian market leader of Fairtrade-certified bananas, with a large number of retail partners in Quebec and Ontario. B Certified is to a business what Fairtrade is to fruit or coffee. Launched in 2006, B Certified companies meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency and legal accountability. Spring is always a great time to organize and make small changes that will add huge functionality to your home. Adding in soft close hardware and drawer organizers can sometimes make it feel like you have a brand new space. Square One finds that 41 per cent of renters with roommates don’t have home insurance

recently surveyed over 1,500 renters in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario. The survey revealed that 30 per cent of renters share their homes with unrelated roommates. Alberta had the highest percentage at 34 per cent, followed by Ontario at 31 per cent and British Columbia at 26 per cent. “We conducted this survey because we’ve been receiving more inquires for home insurance by those living with roommates,” states Daniel Mirkovic, Square One’s president. “We wanted to understand what was driving this trend.” While there are many reasons why renters choose to have roommates, the top reasons for those surveyed were: • To help with rent (63 per cent);

• For companionship (25 per cent); and, • For added security (seven per cents). According to Statistics Canada, residential property values across the country increased by 11 per cet in 2016. While increased property values build equity for homeowners, they make it even harder for first-time buyers to enter the real estate market. This, in turn, causes more pressure on the already tight rental market. In fact, the average cost to rent a two-bedroom apartment continues to rise every year across Canada. “With the high cost of rent, it makes sense that most renters have roommates for financial reasons,” says Mirkovic.

“However, it is surprising how many renters (and their roommates) go without home insurance given the increased risks faced when living with unrelated persons.” Square One’s survey found that renters are eight times more likely to go without home insurance than homeowners. As illustrated in the table, renters in British Columbia are the least likely to have home insurance whereas those in Alberta are the most likely. Based on Square One’s experience, renters have three common misconceptions about home insurance: 1. Landlord’s insurance protects renters. Landlord’s insurance specifically excludes the personal property

and liability exposures of renters. Accordingly, renters need a home insurance policy to protect their belongings, cover extra expenses if their homes are damaged and can’t be occupied, and pay amounts for unintentionally injuring someone else. 2. Home insurance is too expensive for renters. Policies can start from as little as $15 a month. Most insurance providers offer both annual and monthly payment options. To help reduce costs even further, renters can increase the standard policy deductible. A deductible is the amount the renter must pay before the policy will respond. 3. It’s difficult for renters to get home insurance. Of the three misconceptions, this one has some truth to it. Many renters, especially those living with roommates, may have had difficulty getting home insurance. In recent years, providers, like Square One, are actively offering insurance to renters. So, renters are encouraged to shop around to find a policy that works for them. For those living with unrelated roommates, you can expect to pay a little more for the added exposure. Most companies charge an extra 10 per cent, which isn’t very much on a $15 a month policy. You can also expect to be assessed a $2,500 deductible for crimerelated losses. That means you’ll have to pay the first $2,500 if your belongings are stolen or mysteriously disappear. When applying for home insurance, you should be prepared to describe how many roommates you have. If you have just one roommate, then you can often be insured under a single policy. If you have multiple roommates, then each of you will need to purchase separate

policies. It’s also important to describe your relationship with each roommate. While you may consider a sibling or partner to be your roommate, the insurance provider may classify them as a family member. Most policies automatically cover family members at no extra cost. Getting the right home insurance, while essential, is just one side of the coin. With a greater pool of roommates to choose from, it’s now more important than ever that you do your due diligence when finding and selecting a roommate. A bad roommate can cause countless headaches and financial stress. Square One has created an online resource centre for tenants. It offers tips to Canadians on how to find the perfect roommate, structure a lease, and prepare a roommate agreement. As a short summary, here are the top tips to finding the right roommate: • Be upfront about your lifestyle and ask a potential roommate to describe theirs. If you’re an early sleeper, then you might not get along with a night owl. Alternatively, if you wake up early for work, then you probably don’t want a

roommate who enjoys partying on weeknights. • Ask potential roommates to complete an in-depth application about their work, income, and references. Keep in mind you cannot ask questions around certain topics, such as religion, sexual preference, or marital status. • After obtaining permission, conduct a background check. If an applicant provides consent, check their credit score, employment history and rental history. You can also browse their social media profiles on Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn. If you’re a renter living with a roommate, it’s important to stay informed and to have the right insurance coverage in place.
