IF HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS, the love for beautiful living spaces runs rampant across every corner of the GTA…from well-known districts to uncovering the hidden gems of the city, start the décor tour here and discover the neighbourhoods you need to visit for your next fab décor find. You may come across some of our city’s finest designers sourcing for their clients or for themselves in your travels. When it comes to finding that perfect accent or custom-making that show-stopping piece of furniture, Torontonians literally have the world at their fingertips. North

The migration to the north and 905 has other advantages besides bigger homes at a more accessible price — many home improvement and décor stores have burst onto the scene to furnish and service these evergrowing residential neighbourhoods. The convenience of big box stores like Home Depot, Lowes and Canadian Tire are conveniently located next to budget-friendly décor stores like HomeSense, Home Outfitters and many others. But the north isn’t ruled by suburban homogeneity, there are also a number of family owned furniture, flooring and décor shops where you can get that personal neighbourhood touch and maybe even a better price. For walls, a trip to Steeles Paint and Decorating Centre is essential; the staff is very knoweldgeable and service is impeccable. For luxury, on-trend furnishings at a fraction of the cost, make sure to drop by Elte’s warehouse in Vaughan. Nearby you will find stores like Zilli Home Interiors and so many more as you explore the decor-rich north. The Village at Vaughan Mills is a must-see where you will find stores like the Urban Barn or Hunter Douglas. The northern lights shine bright with Prima Lighting offering the latest and greatest in light fixtures. Whether you live there or not, if you’re updating a room or your entire home or just need that one special piece, it’s worth the trip to the 905.

West

West is best. There I said it. I am sure a number of local designers and décor enthusiasts favour the west when they set out on a décor hunt. From the new go-to furniture destination at Liberty Village to designerapproved faithfuls found in the Castlefield district, let’s delve into the vastness of this eclectic urban style, west of Yonge.

Q. Do you have a speciﬁc shop or go-to place for budget items? How about a no-holdsbarred carte blanche spending destination? A. For the “B” word - budget, Designer Fabrics is my primary destination when I need to source fabrics at a great price. Often, you’ll be able to find uncommon patterns and luxurious textures at a fraction of retail costs. When it comes to carte-blanche design, Elte is the one-stop shop. You can literally leave with your entire room completely furnished from the area rug to the accessories and artwork and all the furniture in between. Erica Gelman: house-of-design.ca

LIBERTY VILLAGE: Once an industrial area which later evolved into a “creative class” employment centre, the emergence of multiple condos and lofts in Liberty Village has given rise to a host of décor shops making this location a bona fide design district in its own right. With most stores in the village catering to the small-space dweller, the trinity of must-see stores when in the area are: Casalife, the original furniture store in the village; a new Winnipeg-based EQ3 furniture store; and last and certainly not least West Elm, where styles are eclectic and you are sure to find something that appeals to your taste. WEST QUEEN WEST: The creative spirit thrives in Toronto’s West Queen West (WQW) district. It’s one of the city’s most visited shopping districts where you will find a variety of shops and boutiques specializing in décor amidst the local and independent fashion designers and hipster hotspots like the Drake or Gladstone Hotel. Whether it’s modern or vintage, WQW serves it up fresh. Have an affinity for mid-century? MORBA is your go-to shop for décor and lighting. Modern chic? Pavillion. Prefer products from the who’s who in interior design? Quasi Modo Modern Furniture — this area has something for everyone. Just go. You’ll see. JUNCTION: The revitalization of the Junction boasts a thriving home décor and antiques hub and this décor district is steadily growing every year. When it comes to an eclectic look where what’s old is reinvented with what’s new and fresh, this is the neighbourhood to watch.

Q, How about a carte-blanche destination? A. Avenue Road in Toronto. Look at their amazing glass collection, like the Angelo e Angela glass-ceramic vases. One Junction staple is Cornerstone Home Interiors where you will find a mix of sophisticated vintage, Art Deco and Asian-inspired contemporary furniture. For real upcyclers, Forever Interiors is where old and discarded gets renewed and refreshed in a new incarnation. Mjölk (translation: milk) is your go-to place for modern Scandinavian style. And so many local shops that have carved out their niche — a walk around the Junction and it becomes clear that you can create or find original pieces as distinct as the neighbourhood you discovered them in. CASTLEFIELD: The Castlefield Caledonia Design and Décor District is considered the grande dame of décor and design destinations in Toronto. If décor or renovations are happening in your work or life, this is the go-to place where your search inevitably begins if not only initially for inspiration and exploration of design trends that resonate most with you. The proximity to downtown and the comprehensive range of home furnishings make it a Toronto staple for professionals and consumers alike. Stores like Elte, A Special Place, Union Lighting, Shelter and Stone Tile give you a taste for what excellence in design and craftsmanship stand for. Gems like The Door Store, which is really much more than a door store, specialize in architectural pieces and restoring beautiful antique pieces and hardware. Whatever your style, there isn’t a room in your home that the Castlefield district can’t stylishly furnish. When it comes to décor in Toronto, it’s the mother ship.

South

Urbanites, have no fear. The condo concentration in the downtown core necessitated a burgeoning design districts to accommodate the multifunctional and condo/loft market. Living right downtown used to mean a trek out to one of the big box stores or established design districts, but now the big brands and magnates of style and comfort have come to you. THE DISTILLERY: When James Worts opened his grist mill in the Lakeshore and Parliament area and his brother-in-law William Gooderham partnered with him to create The Gooderham and Worts Distillery, the two men couldn’t have foreseen the stylish destination it would become. The gorgeous industrial Victorian architecture, with cobbled roads and open, spacious buildings, makes it ideal for the galleries, furniture markets and event facilities. From contemporary pieces offering a clean, modern aesthetic to an eclectic mix of pop and Euro influences, there’s definitely a strong and stylish décor entity in The Distillery.

Q. What is your favourite hidden gem? A. Windergarden is my go-to shop for unique home accessories and gifts. I’ve been sending my clients there for years for indoor and outdoor furniture (they now sell my new Jane by Jane Lockhart furniture collection), lighting, art and more. Q. What is your favourite shopping district for décor/ design ﬁnds and why? A. The best thing about Toronto is it is constantly growing and changing so many new little places are popping up all the time. I love previously loved stores from Leslieville to Kensington. I can buy something and with a few tweaks – new paint, new hardware or even a new use – I can completely transform it. I always enjoy the unique finds at the DX and AGO stores. YORKVILLE – BLOOR TO AVE. & DAV: A designer destination known for its collection of stylishly famous fashion labels, Yorkville has several décor boutiques with a perfectly distinguished answer to any opulent question. Designers Walk on Bedford is definitely a must-see on the tour when you’re working with a designer, though most businesses are only open to accredited industry professionals. From Yorkville to Ave&Dav, antiquers and the vintage-minded will appreciate a few exceptional finds, while Weavers Art is just that – the art of rugs. This area is home to some of Toronto’s finest interior designers such as Gluckstein Design and Powell & Bonnell, signalling that the area has design pedigree. From Angus & Company on Davenport to Anthropologie on Yorkville down to William Ashley on Bloor. ROSEDALE – SUMMERHILL: The hallmark of Rosedale is the independent boutiques lining Yonge St. that offer the most spectacular finds. Stores are artful collections of furniture and décor objets d’art. Midcentury modern, Victorian finery, important pieces, and creative genius create rooms that beg to be explored carefully. Hollace Cluny, L’Atellier, Chair Table Lamp, and absolutely Absolutely. The area has a bit of everything – but most of all it offers inspiration. Stores aren’t just stocked, they’re curated, making each show-stopping space a store to explore for the details. It’s a great starting point and ending point for décor shopping as you can hit the area up for some ideas and then end your tour to pick up a few of the must-haves that have been on your mind since you left..

The go-to shop for everything including budget items for your interior or exterior would be Direct Interiors. East

The east side has been booming over the last few years. As urban sprawl continues and a much-needed subway finally stretched east across Sheppard (and right to IKEA!) the access brought a resurgence of interest to the east. Property east of the DVP became very desirable for its proximity to the city and access to transportation routes. This prime real estate is being treated to complete gut renos, and the décor shops have moved in to support the demand. KING STREET EAST: The hottest trends and sexiest styles fill the gorgeous shops along King Street East. This is a designer destination where you can find heavy hitting names like the UK’s iconic AGA and Toronto’s own Klaus by Nienkamper – an internationally recognized design powerhouse. Several chain brands bring their niche pieces to the urban party, touting the multi-functional furniture and low-profile sizing ideal for the urban domicile. But furniture boutiques in this area also offer originals by celebrated designers with cutting edge savvy meant for to be appreciated for their beautiful lines, sumptuous materials and true genuine design genius. As well, there is a selection of stores offering rugs, countertops, appliances, ceramics and stone – and more. QUEEN STREET EAST: There’s long been some funky décor and salvage stores along the Queen St. E. strip, from around Broadview to Coxwell, but since the area started to gentrify, a few more upscale shops have helped step up the process. Many shops offer Mid-Century Modern and Industrial Chic, while other shops show the best of what you might consider gold medal garage sale finds. From vintage furniture and ephemera to handmade and upcycled gems, the décor inspiration also makes the trip worthwhile. There is also a mix of hardware, custom furniture and even a tile store in the mix. LEASIDE: There’s long been some great shopping in Leaside. This upscale neighbourhood has a bit of a village feel to it in areas along Bayview, where shops servicing the community offer a bit of everything, but with the arrival of some new big box stores and large plazas in the eastern part of Leaside, it’s actually got a lot to offer when shopping for the home. Whether it’s the hardware stores on Laird, the massive HomeSense or some exotic pieces from Pier 1, there are some staple finds and great prices to be found here. The shops along Bayview Ave. offer a fun mix of things, from electronics to country chic for the boutique shop enthusiast. BERMONDSEY: Located on Bermondsey just north of O’Connor Dr., the strip is a renovator’s heaven. Tile outlets abound, with choices in any style, for any budget. It’s a great place to find a deal and some unusual options. The street has an interesting selection of other stores offering furniture and accessories but the gems are Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore and bargain finds at Home Again. The ReStore funds Habitat for Humanity’s building projects. They get some new donations coming from builders and big brands, and the stock changes a lot. They offer a bit of everything. Depending on what’s been donated, you may find a brand new fireplace insert or a gorgeous ball and claw tub. Home Again also has charitable affiliations and carries much of the same, though they’ve got a lot more in the way of discontinued lines and belowwholesale prices. Items like doors, tile, kitchens and skylights. Both take and resell anything that can be salvaged and reused from tear-downs and renos, diverting it from landfill. Whole kitchens – cabinets, countertops and all – can often be found at a fraction of the price you’d expect.

ne of the biggest influences for 2013 is the return of the 1920s and all the glamour that comes with it – which happens to be my favourite style of all time – Art Deco. For those of you who aren’t particularly familiar with this era and the look that comes with it, Art Deco is an eclectic mix of traditional and modern elements characterized by rich colours, bold geometric shapes, and lavish ornamentation. We will notice that a lot of what we’re seeing, in terms of design for 2013, is being inspired from this iconic period in time making for a harmonious yet striking combination of classic and current design. Aside from Art Deco, we are also seeing a lot of Americana, rustic and neon influences. 31

HERE’S A LOOK AT WHAT WE CAN EXPECT TO SEE IN 2013:

1 | COLOUR Right off the runway and into the world of interior design comes a palette in an array of hues including a re-release of certain shades held over from last year. For 2013, hunter and melon greens, peachy and coral pinks, royal and cobalt blues, and creamy and mustard yellows come together mixed with hints of bolder purples and clean whites making for a very preppy yet sophisticated look. 2 | TEXTILES The intricate cut-out pattern which we call lace is making its way back onto our tables, over our windows, and is even being incorporated into our furnishings – and no, this is not your grandma’s lace. More modern geometrical and floral patterns will grace us and we’ll also start to see them come to life with colour. Inspiration: I travelled to Versailles last summer and drew great inspiration from the Lace Castle Guards; war-like lions covered completely with modern lace -calling these ‘furry friends’ even extravagant would be an understatement.

3 | PATTERN Animal Print: It’s not what you’re thinking. Instead of zebra or leopard print, we will be seeing actual animal figures on our fabrics, specifically dogs and elephants. Florals: When it comes to decorating, having a floral pattern is a staple. This year, look out for Scandinavianinfluenced buds in more modern silhouettes. Stripes: A huge trend spotted on the runways of the Spring/Summer 2013 collections during Fashion Week was stripes – they will be huge in home décor this year. 3 | LIGHTING Pendants, chandeliers and hanging lamps of all kinds will continue to evolve and grow. We’re beginning to see materials of all kinds utilized to make these popular fixtures, such as jam jars and rusted metal canisters, wire

Embroidery and carvings in artwork will be seen due to the innovation of modern technology, giving the interior space a cultural heritage with a modern emotion. 5 | FURNISHINGS Old furniture and accessories become new again – modern interior design trends for 2013 will reflect this and will strongly encourage us to take care of the planet and enjoy a nice blend of retro and modern interior design creating a feeling of vintage style.

Five organizing myths that

can keep you stuck by Hellen Buttigieg

t’s time to dispel some organizing myths that may be keeping you stuck and getting in your way of a more organized life. I’ve focused on the five most common beliefs about organizing, so you can get clear on what works and what doesn’t. Once we bust the myths, you’ll be on your way to organizing yourself like a pro.

1 | Containers wIll always get you organized. True or False?

False. Contrary to what the ads want you to believe, containers alone are not the answer to your organizing dilemmas. In fact, they can become part of the problem. Let’s take Nancy for example. She purchased several large plastic containers to organize all of her craft supplies and memorabilia. But she still couldn’t find what she was looking for when she needed it. Nancy mistakenly thought all she needed to get herself organized was a few containers. But what she really needed was to learn a bit about organizing. Before you go out and spend money on containers or other organizing products, do some preliminary work and planning. The first thing I recommend is doing the purge. Only when you know exactly what it is you need to store, how much of it, and where the most suitable location is to store it – should you go out and purchase containers. And don’t forget to measure first. Bringing home the wrong containers for the job simply creates more clutter. 2 | Multi-tasking is always productive. True or False?

False. Although useful in some situations, multi-tasking can cause you to lose your focus and make costly and timeconsuming mistakes. When working on important tasks, multi-tasking is probably not a good idea. Some things require your undivided attention. Multi-tasking distracts us from being in the present moment, which can drain our energy and leave us feeling exhausted and unfulfilled. Next time you are participating in an activity, be with that activity (rather than thinking about all the things you should be doing instead, or have to do later). Resist the habit of trying to do two things at once.

3 | Being messy automatically means you are disorganized. True or False?

False. Organizing is not about how it looks; it’s about how it works. Visual, creative types need to have things out where they can see them, because out-of-sight is out-of-mind for them. This may cause their spaces to appear disorganized to others, but they probably know exactly where everything is. The flipside of this though is that visual types lose focus when there is too much to look at, so they need to find products that will allow them to contain their stuff to keep down the visual clutter. For example, a literature sorter allows them to contain their papers while still keeping them within view. 4 | You have to toss everything to get organized. True or False?

False. I often hear people say to me “There’s no way I could get organized because I am too sentimental – I don’t want to get rid of everything.” Although you shouldn’t keep things you don’t like or will never use, there’s always a way to either display or store the things that matter. For example, shadow boxes or display cases allow you to protect as well as showcase the possessions that truly mean something special to you. 5 | If you write it on a to-do list, it will get done. True or False?

False. I had a client who was so proud of her to-do list: it was prioritized, colour-coded and categorized – yet she was frustrated and overwhelmed at how many things on the list were not getting done. To get anything accomplished you have to actually schedule time to do the things on your list. Simply putting a task on a list is not a commitment – blocking time on your calendar to do it is.
