hether you’re relocating from one coast to the other or moving to your first place out of parents home, changing homes can be hectic, exciting and certainly stressful. But, relax.

You can eliminate all the anxiety sometimes associated with moving by taking control of the situation with confidence. If you decide to move yourself, book a moving truck well in advance from a reliable company that can help you give you tips on moving as well as advice regarding the size of vehicle you will need. If you decide to go with a pro, ask your friends and family for a recommendation of mover. Call at least three companies to ask about their services and then decide. Professional movers can do everything for you if you wish, from packing and unpacking, to disconnecting appliances and electronics, but of course there’s extra cost involved. Make sure you understand the terms of your agreement no matter what you decide as well any other additional costs, such as insurance and mileage costs so you can budget accordingly.

his year Labour Day comes late - as late as is possible, the 7th. It feels like we won a little bit of extra summer, so don’t put away those white shoes just yet! But get busy putting everything else away.

September 1st is a popular moving day. People want to get settled before school starts – whether parents of school-aged children, post-secondary students setting up their own homes, or educators that will be getting back to work after a summer respite. If school isn’t part of your world, well then it will explain why you’ve found this month such a busy and difficult one to move.

Busy months have movers booked, trucks reserved and friends spread thin. If you’re relying on some friends to do-it-yourself with a bit of help, you may have to consider how many other people are moving and needing that muscle on September 1st too. If you’re moving to accommodate school, you’ll find it’s a bit more of a rush to settle in, too. Where the summer offered long, easy days, the start of the school year wraps up a large part of your free time – not just at school, but traveling to and from, homework, meetings, extracurriculars and trips to the library. You have the extra seven days, use them wisely to get your home settled and your things put away. Once the rigors of school set in, fitting the move into the routine may seem just a little more difficult. But, you made it! And if you’ve been waiting for October so that you’re not competing with those moving for school, it’s time to get looking! This rent deposit holds the apartment for you from the time you sign on the dotted line and can only be applied to the last month’s rent. Some provinces allow for a pet and/or damage deposit too. Landlords can also ask for a deposit on keys, pass cards and more (though only to their replacement value). Deposits can come as a surprise to first time renters and are a hefty added cost when first settling in. Make sure you get a receipt for all deposits as proof of payment. WHETHER YOU’RE LOOKING FOR YOUR FIRST OR NTH RENTAL, finding the right one can pose a challenge. Here are 10 things you should think about before saying yes to the address. 1. ACCESSIBILITY: While realtors might emphasize the importance of location, it doesn’t necessarily mean just proximity to the things you care about. A unit geographically closer to work might take longer to get to than one further away but right along a major highway. Living along a subway route might make your commute more pleasant in the winter, when a 20 minute walk will chill you to the bone. 2. PRICE: A big one for most people, a good rule of thumb is to keep your housing costs (including utilities and other essentials) at about 30% of your net income. After all, what good the perfect unit if you have to drastically change your lifestyle to stay in it? You should be living your best life! 3. PROXIMITY: Although it doesn’t necessarily guarantee accessibility (see 1), there’s usually a positive correlation between how far away you are from somewhere, to how long it’ll take for you to get there. So if there are some places you know you’ll go frequently (work, school, maybe your mom’s house), it pays to consider how close they are to your new home. 4. Moving out for the first time can be a stressful change, an the transition to college or university on top of that can make it a very overwhelming experience. However, taking a few painless steps can make the move to the new “home away from home” go more smoothly. Moving children to their university or college of choice for the first time can leave parents and their student children physically and emotionally drained, if unprepared. It’s easy to get frustrated when faced with packing and condensing belongings which will ultimately have to fit in a small room in a space often shared by one, two, three or more people. So here are some tips for parents and students to make the process easier: 1. PACK RIGHT, PACK LIGHT. Student apartments aren’t usually very big and there isn’t much room for clutter. Try to only pack the essentials with a few decorative items such as pictures of family and high school friends to make it feel more like home. 2. WHEELS MAKE THE JOB EASIER. Take a cart or box dolly to help you unload and move items from your car or van to the apartment. 3. ITEMS OF A FEATHER, PACK TOGETHER. Pack similar belongings together; it makes unpacking on arrival much easier. 4. PACK YOUR TOOLS. Buy a tool kit once you get to campus, or bring one from home, because you never know what you might have to put together, take apart or fix. 5. SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST. A First Aid kit is always helpful. But make sure you’re packing medicines and cleaning supplies separate from your other items. 6. RECYCLE YOUR MATERIALS. Make sure to break your boxes down and pack them away in a safe and dry place so you can use them when it’s time to move out. If you don’t want to purchase boxes, rent totes instead. Totes stack so they get the job done well and can be picked up or retuned after a move.

Chances are, you will say no. Here are some reasons why hiring professional movers is worth the investment. 1. TIME. If you are in a crunch with your moving dates, movers can give you the precious time to focus on other things besides physically shifting your belongings. Some moving companies even offer packing services. 2. THEY’RE PROFESSIONALS. They have the truck, the muscles and the packing materials. This is their job, they do it for a living. Hiring professionals means you can reduce or avoid enlisting friends and family, who may not have the appropriate skills for the job.
