THERE’S A CERTAIN AMOUNT of common sense when it comes to elevator etiquette. If you live in a highrise, the elevator is the main way in and out of your home; a confined space in which you briefly encounter your neighbours several times daily. The natural instinct is to be absorbed in your own headspace, preoccupied with where you’re headed, and keeping strangers at a distance. And yet, the other elevator occupants, unfamiliar as they may be, deserve a modicum of courtesy. Unfortunately, most people have forgotten their elevator etiquette.

10 Rules of Elevator Etiquette: 1. Out first, then in. It only makes sense. Allow passengers to exit before attempting to board the elevator. 2. Take the stairs if you are only going one or two floors, except if the elevator is empty or you have a cart, stroller, large packages or are disabled. 3. Hold the door for others who are running to catch the elevator — especially your neighbours coming from down the hall. A plague on anyone who watches the door slide shut in someone’s face! 4. If you’re sick, wait for an empty elevator. If that is impossible, don’t cough and sneeze for the duration of the ride. And if that is impossible, never put your germ-infested hands on the floor buttons. 2 8 YPNEXTHOME.CA

5. If you are first on the elevator or closest to the control panel, ask other riders what floor they would like. On the other hand, it’s somewhat rude to call out your floor to the person standing nearest the buttons as if that person is the elevator operator. 6. When other passengers board, move a little to give everyone some personal space. 7. Avoid carrying out interpersonal conversations, be they face-toface or — particularly — talking on your cellphone. The elevator is not a phone booth. 8. Likewise, if you’re listening to your iPod, turn down the volume so you don’t disturb other riders. 9. If you’re carrying a backpack, make sure it doesn’t land in

someone’s face when you turn around. 10. Never drop litter or deface the walls of the elevator. Vandalism hurts everyone. Riding in an elevator can bring out the best — or worst — in people. Think of the elevator as an extension of the building’s lobby, and of other riders as your guests. Remember, a little elevator etiquette goes a long way. Now, enjoy the ride!

Whether it’s because you’re on a budget – hello bachelor apartment – or not. Condos and apartments are just not made to offer a lot of storage space. But no happy renter is about to give up their perfectly located rental, next to the best 24-hour Chinese restaurant in town for more space. Come to think of it, I know a happy renter who wasn’t willing to give up their rental for a long time girlfriend, never mind leaving it for a bigger closet! No, renters just learn to live in a small space by learning and accepting a few notions along the way: How to stay organized: Organizing your home straight from the beginning is key to manage living in a small space. It’s also key when you’re late for work and you need to find your lucky tie, spreadsheets and coffee mug in a jiffy. Luckily, renters are as creative as they get and you’ll think of plenty of tricks and storage solutions for all your home items. How to loose things in 100 square feet and less: Yet no matter how small your space is or how organized you try to be, you will still manage to loose things. Where do my hair elastics go? Where is the spatula when my omelet is ready to be turned over? So many questions, yet so few answers. How to let go: Small space living forces you to purge any unnecessary items and regretfully decline beautifully crafted pieces of furniture that won’t fit up the stairs of your rental, never mind in your actual home. Sometimes you have to choose between a 40 inch tv and space to stand to change your socks. This can be tough, but it can also be liberating. It’s the perfect excuse for why you can’t hold onto all of grandma’s terrible Christmas sweaters. How to make the most out of everything: I’m talking about making the most out of every single inch, corner, step, crack and hole found in your

rental. You don’t need to fill your entire rental with items, but when it comes to storage, no space goes to waste. How to double-duty: Double-duty furniture will be your best friend. A coffee table that also rises into a desk and holds convenient storage compartments – check, check and check! But double-duty will also take on an entire other meaning. Soon enough you’ll realize you’re using your stack of magazines as a chair and your coffee mug as a utensil holder. How to love and respect what you have: If you don’t absolutely love something, you won’t want to bring it into your space because you will be forced to stare at it (there’s no place to hide!) This will change your shopping habits for the better and you will start to make quality purchases, not impulse ones. How to clean (like, seriously clean): A small space means there’s less to clean, but that doesn’t mean you get to clean less often. In fact, you’ll discover real quick there are certain smells you can’t ignore or escape, and are better off totally avoiding. A small space means no dishes will go unwashed, no bedsheets will go unchanged and certainly no garbage will be forgotten.

YOU’RE TAKING THE PLUNGE INTO ENTREPRENEURSHIP. Now you need to make myriad decisions, starting with where in your home to set up your workspace. The right space can make all the difference to the success of your venture. Here are some considerations for effectiveness and productivity. First off is the actual location. How much space is required and the type of space available will dictate where to set up shop. Depending on your space, a den, spare bedroom or mudroom can easily suit this purpose. Claiming part of a basement could work as well. When a full room isn’t

available consider converting a large foyer or the space under a staircase. Enclosing a porch or a balcony may do the trick. At the very least – and if it’s all your apartment can handle, designate a corner of one room as work-only space. Ensure everyone knows this is a work-only area and off limits. A physical demarcation will assist with organization as well as support clear boundaries. Make a list of the needs and desires for the type of work you’re going to perform. You may prefer a space that offers such features as privacy, quiet, optimal ventilation, natural light, bright colours, artwork and an inspiring

view. Choose the elements that are crucial for you to be at your best. Fulfill the needs first; The majority of desires will follow. Let’s assume you need a desk, a phone and a computer. These require power, an Internet connection and lighting. Note the outlets and electricity available. Ensure there is enough power to handle a space heater or fan, computer, printer, desk lighting and whatever else you need all at once. Beware of tripping hazards like extension cords and power bars. If you will be seeing clients or colleagues in your space, there are other considerations. Check the local bylaws regarding signage and parking. The front walk will need to be well maintained with snow and ice removed when necessary. Clear entryways and preferably a direct route to the workspace rather than through living space are ideal. Ask friends and colleagues for their impressions and how you can make it more welcoming. Just as important is the mental space. Entering a workspace that meets your needs and is designated as such allows the mind to focus. When it’s both functional and pleasurable to be in, your work will flow.
