housing option that requires little maintenance, renting is often the way to go. But depending on your lease and provincial laws, you could end up in a heap of trouble if your dog destroys your carpeted stairs or your teenager drives through the fence. Sometimes preventing damage is easy, but there are a few circumstances that have less obvious preventative measures. Here’s how to avoid a few overlooked problems that could cause harm to your rental unit. 1 8 YPNEXTHOME.CA
How to family-proof a rental Toddlers always manage to get into something they shouldn’t – makeup, peanut butter, paint. Kids are basically little peace disturbers. I once put an entire container of Vaseline into my hair. If you are renting with a toddler, the basic safety latches and locks on cabinets, drawers and toilets are good, but here’s a couple more ways to avoid disaster with toddlers and their older siblings. Put doorknob covers on bathroom doors If the door stays closed, toddlers (and pets) can’t get into anything hidden away in the bathroom — including, but not limited to, toilet water, makeup, powders, creams and garbage. We all know you can’t watch the wee one every second of every day, so this is the next best thing.
Cover floor vents with tulle Let’s all admit we’ve thrown something down the vent at some point in our lives. My sister admits she threw her nail polish down one. Avoid serious damage by covering your vents with tulle. By doing so air can still get by but trinkets cannot. Install shut-off valves on faucets and shower heads While this is actually intended to promote water conservation, shut-off valves that can be placed on faucets and shower heads also limit flood opportunities because the water cannot be left running. Buy a door stop and wall protector In my childhood home we used to ram our front door into the wall behind it all the time. I swear it felt like we made a doorknob-shaped hole in that wall every week. Buy a strong doorstop that can withstand a family of five busting into the house, and place a wall protector on the wall for when the doorstop fails.
How to dog-proof your rental I love dogs, but it’s true that they can cause a mess and literally destroy homes. Here’s how to make sure your landlord doesn’t regret their decision to be pet friendly. Gates and crates If your pup seems to want to eat everything, make no mistake, he will eat the stairs and the walls. Crate training will not only protect your rental unit, but it will help with separation anxiety. Baby gates on stairs or across entrances is another way to protect your unit as it ensures your pup only goes where you want him to. Don’t buy one of those mesh crates if you have a spirited dog. My friend’s dog chewed through hers, took down the Christmas tree and chewed up a can of WD40 (at his boyfriend’s mom’s house). How to frat-proof a rental If you’re renting somewhere where bed bugs and cockroaches are a concern, there are a few
easy things you can do to prevent those unwanted visitors. Seal gaps around windows and doors Buy some caulking and seal up holes anywhere you think bugs might be able to crawl in. Cockroaches are attracted to filth, so if you have dirty neighbours, you could be at risk even if your place is clean. Buy bedding encasements Buying a mattress and box spring protector won’t stop bugs from entering your home, but it will make it easier to deal with them should they find their way in. Spilled flour, coloured-on walls and noise complaints are badat-the-time events that become funny stories down the road, but flooded floors, torn-up stairs and poor credit are things that will haunt your renting future. Know how to help yourself and take a few precautions to make sure your home is protected against rental disasters.

Next, we create a ‘box wall’ stacked to the ceiling to hold the items in the attic in place. We then stand plastic wrapped mattresses against the box wall and secure everything with tie-off straps to keep belongings from getting jostled during the move. If you’re not completely packed and ready on moving day, we can’t create that box wall early on and, this decreases the capacity of the items that can be moved at one time. It also eats up precious time and, therefore, money!
HERE A RE A FEW TIPS TO HELP you
avoid finding damaged items at your destination: 1. Consider purchasing boxes from your mover. The most common packing mistake we see is people getting free boxes at the grocery or liquor store and then putting too much weight in them. For example, using a large box to pack books and magazines may make it too heavy to lift, and the box might break during the move due to the weight. Use this rule of thumb: the heavier the item, the smaller the box. Be choosy about your boxes; free boxes from a grocery store that have been used to ship produce could contain insect larvae that may transfer to your belongings. 2. Be realistic about the number of boxes you need. Depending on how long you have lived in your current location, you will most
likely underestimate your boxes requirement. Often, we hear of people who think 50 or 60 boxes will be enough, and then realize they need 250, two days before moving day. 3. Start packing early and be completely packed when the movers arrive. Sometimes we arrive at a customer’s home and they’re not packed. There’s nothing more frustrating than trying to move a customer’s belongings while they are attempting to shove items into boxes and we get in each others’ way. This also interferes with the optimal loading of the moving truck. We have a loading system where the first things we place in the truck are light items such as chairs, lampshades, cushions, etc; we place these items in the ‘attic’ (the area over the cab) of the truck. We can get lots of light items up there and they stay secure.
4. Think ahead. Begin packing items you don’t use daily. As you pack your boxes move them to the front of your apartment and stack them along a wall near the front door. Say it takes 2.5 minutes, on average, to move a box from an upper bedroom to the truck. Having it on the main floor can shave 45 seconds off the time for each box. Saving 45 seconds multiplied by 200 boxes can save lots of time and money. 5. Consider having your moving company pack for you. We are skilled, have more experience and have standard-size small, medium and large boxes that are designed to fit into our trucks to create a perfect box wall for optimum efficiency and safety. So, when it comes to moving, forethought goes a long way. Because your belongings mean a lot to you, take extra care when packing so that they arrive at your destination safely.

IF THERE’S ANY MONTH WHEN
you’re most likely to wonder if all the bills will get paid it’s usually January. After the feverish rush of the holidays and all the unexpected expenses that popped up, no doubt things will be a little tight. Add the extra cost of heating and the jump in “fresh” food prices and you’ll be looking for ways to trim back. Enter Make Do Month. This is the month when you stretch everything a little farther so you spend a lot less. If you get invited to a party, you don’t rush out and buy something new, you get creative and shop your closet. And if you need a little something different, you shop a friend’s closet. Or hold a clothing exchange. What you don’t do is spend money. When the weather is warm, it’s easy to do lots of free things. When it’s cold, entertainment gets more expensive. Sure there’s that great movie you’d love to take the family to for a night out of the house. For a family of four, you’re probably looking at $100 or more with popcorn and drinks. Recycle a movie you already own or do a movie swap with friends, add some home-made popcorn and a 12-pack of pop and you can probably do it for $10. Now that’s making do. January is also a good month to experiment with a new routine as you make do. If you’re used to buying coffee every day, brew
your own at home or work and save big-time. If you regularly go out for lunch, pack one from home for four out of every five days and not only will you drop those holiday pounds, you’ll be able to pay off that holiday debt. But what if you have family or friends whose birthday falls in January. You’ll have to buy something. No you don’t. You can give something of yourself instead of something purchased. Make their favorite cookies, offer to cook them a meal or a bunch of meals for the freezer for those extra busy workdays, or create a coupon for three nights of free babysitting. Maybe you’re a computer genius and can offer to do maintenance or repairs. Perhaps you’re a mechanic and can offer a tune-up. Substitute your energy for spending money. After the buzz of the holidays
you’ll no doubt be happy to stay home for the first couple of weeks. Then you may start feeling itchy. You’ve got to get out. You can feel the walls closing in. Time to hit that great new restaurant that just opened up, or head out to the clubs. Wait a minute. This is Make Do Month. Call up a couple of friend and throw a pot-luck game night instead. See if you can do it at their house this time. Start a tradition of once a month game or poker nights and rotate from one friend’s home to another. No one says you can’t have fun in Make Do Month. You just can’t spend gobs of money. Make Do Month is a conscious decision to stretch every dollar as far as it’ll go. Try it and see if just becoming conscious save you money. I’ll bet your pleasantly surprised.
