We’re glad you’re here

For generations, Steel Days has been more than a celebration filled with fireworks, parades, concerts, and gatherings It is a reminder of who we are as a community, a time when friends and families gather, and the spirit of American Fork shines brightly

This year’s celebration offers another opportunity to come together, honor our traditions, and create new memories . From longtime favorites to exciting events for all ages, Steel Days continues to showcase the pride, unity, and energy that make American Fork such a remarkable place to call home .

I look forward to seeing our streets filled with smiling faces, children waving along parade routes, and

residents coming together to celebrate all that makes our city special Whether you are a lifelong resident, a newcomer, or a visitor joining us for the first time, Steel Days has a way of making everyone feel welcome

Our city has grown and changed over the years We have welcomed new neighbors, created new opportunities, and embraced exciting possibilities . Yet through that growth, the heart of American Fork remains the same . We are a community built on kindness, service, hard work, and a commitment to helping one another .

Steel Days honors our heritage while celebrating our future It reminds us of the hardworking men and women who helped build this community and the generations who continue to make it such a wonderful place to live, work, and raise a family

Every Hero Has an origin

2026 markS the 81sT year since the first steel Days celebration in 1945!

For over 150 years the city of American Fork has gathered together to celebrate its history, achievements, business community, and residents This annual celebration is now known as Steel Days, but throughout the years the festivities have also been called Timber Day, Liberty Day, and Poultry Day

TiMber day

Timber Day was an all-day picnic with music, entertainment, and games It began around 1865 and was held in a grove of trees known as “The Timbers ” Families brought food prepared especially for the occasion, laid it out, and shared it with others . There were activities for young and old, with a horseshoe competition, foot races, and ball games . Timber Day was observed until approximately 1904 .

liBerty day

Liberty Day had no set date but alternated between July 4 and July 24 to mark the nation’s birth date along with the residents’ pioneer heritage The picnic in the park continued in Central Park, which is now known as Robinson Park There was an organized parade with decorated flatbed horse-drawn wagons. When automobiles were introduced, they were decorated and driven from one end of Main Street to the other . Until 1910, the city’s roads were dirt and gravel, increasing the challenges of such travels .

There was usually a theme chosen for each year’s celebration . In 1925, it honored the various states of the United States . There was a baseball game, dance, and fireworks. The tradition of shooting off a cannon from the cemetery hill early in the morning marked the start of the day’s events

Poultry day

In July 1927, Poultry Day began with a modest celebration It was expanded in 1928 with a town banquet instead of the previous picnic There was also a parade, ball game, races, carnival, and a program and dance Mar y Pulley was the first Poultry Day Queen. During the banquet, a server spilled a pot of hot chocolate in Mary’s lap She simply wiped it up and went on with the day .

The Sunrise Salute, or firing the cannon, continued at daybreak . There was a free lunch with 10,000 chicken sandwiches served . There was a flower show, art show, and an all-day movie showing at the Cameo Theater .

There were no celebrations held during the years of the Depression Poultry Day was held in July 1941, but with the attack on Pearl Harbor in December, all American Fork celebrations were eliminated during the war, with the exception of a small neighborhood party in 1944

Steel dayS

Since 1945, Steel Days has been American Fork’s traditional celebration Then-mayor O De Vere Wootton decided Poultry Day no longer reflected the city’s economy. The newly constructed Columbia Steel Mill brought many newcomers, who made an impact on housing, utilities, traffic, and commerce. The mill became the largest employer in Utah Valley Two individuals suggested “Steel Day” after a request for ideas for a name for the celebration Steel Day was selected and was celebrated on Labor Day .

In 1946, Steel Day was a full day of events, similar to Poultry Day

The American Fork Chamber of Commerce was also established that year and was involved in the planning of the Steel Day events The parade featured numerous floats decorated for and by local businesses Bands came from Tooele, Salt Lake City, Nephi, Payson, Lehi, Pleasant Grove, and Provo . The parade was presented twice for many years - at 10:00 a .m . from 500 West Main Street to 500

East, and then at 6:00 p .m . when the route was reversed .

The duration of Steel Days expanded from one day to three days, then four and five days, and eventually to ten days . Currently, Steel Days runs for eight days and includes over 30 events

Vehicles were also an important part of Steel Days history In 1961, the Jaycees (Junior Chamber of Commerce) held a drawing for a Ford Falcon However, it did not prove to be enough of a draw and there was a $1,500 deficit after the ticket sales were tallied The next year, the car was a sporty Thunderbird and ticket sales increased dramatically . The evening program featured a singing group from Ogden, “The Osmond Brothers,” complete with Donny, who even then stole the show .

In 1963, the city used a smaller approach, calling it “Community Day .” It included a pet and hobby show and a short evening program with fireworks. Despite its success, there was no celebration in 1964 or 1965 Civic clubs apparently did not want to take over managing the celebration There were, however, abbreviated queen pageants held

In 1966, a new committee was formed, and it was again a larger celebration that was now held in July . They also resumed using the Steel Days name . In the late 1960s, the American Fork Boat Harbor was developed, and boat racing was added to the list of events, and the “City of Fun” Carnival made its Steel Days debut in 1968 .

The festivities remained mostly the same for the next several decades, with several of the events being part of the festivities every year and others being added or eliminated In 2003, events marking the city’s 150th birthday were incorporated into the celebration, even though they were held earlier in the summer

Since 2018, the American Fork Chamber of Commerce has proudly

managed and operated the beloved Steel Days celebration in partnership with American Fork City . Over the years, it has grown tremendously, with exciting additions like the Kickball and Golf Tournaments (2018), Kids Splash Night and Pickleball Tournament (2019), and a new home for the carnival at Mary and Art Dye Park In 2020, despite the challenges of the pandemic, Steel Days’ 75th anniversary was celebrated by bringing the parade directly to the people with a 23mile route through the city, a first in American Fork history

Each year has brought new traditions and community favorites, from the return of the Variety Show as American Fork’s Got Talent (2021) to events like the Cornhole Tournament, Teen Pool Party (2022), and the introduction of a stunning Drone Show, Mario Kart Tournament, and extended parade route (2023) . In 2024, the schedule was expanded to

include two Saturdays and brought back the crowd-favorite Burnout Contest . In 2025, the Pickleball Glowdown was added and the Drone Show festivities expanded to be even bigger and better than ever . There are lots of new events to look forward to in 2026 including a Beach Party/Marina Day, a Youth Entrepreneur Market, Night Golf Tournament, and Battle of the Bands We’re also planning on bringing back a Huck Finn Fishing Challenge!

Some show up early, sTay laTe, volunTeer for decadeS, and quietly build a liFe of service that imProves their neighbors’ lives. in american Fork, many of those everyday heroes can be found on the hill, as the utah StaTe developMenTal cenTer is afFecTionaTely called.

The Utah State Developmental Center, or USDC, has been part of the community since 1920, serving people with complex disabilities and becoming one of the city’s most meaningful long-term partners For more than a century, it has been a place where care, compassion, and commitment are not just ideals, but daily work

American Fork Mayor Brad Frost said the Developmental Center’s influenCe exTends far beyond itS caMpuS.

“The Developmental Center is part of the fabric of our community, and the residents and caregivers who are there each day help make American Fork a more caring, compassionate, and welcoming city,” Frost said .

City Administrator David Bunker says American Fork has “many touchpoints” with USDC, from utilities to public safety services But the relationship goes far beyond city support “The main purpose for USDC is to provide specialized services to members of our community with complex disabilities,”

he said . And while those services are at the heart of USDC’s mission, the center has also created something bigger: a neTwork of super neighbors who volunTeer, work, and serve wiTh heArT.

More than 7,000 volunteer hours are given at USDC each year, helping with dances, church activities, and other events that bring joy and companionship to the people who live there. Volunteers and staff members must pass background checks, but the real qualification for life on the Hill seems to be something less formal and more powerful . It is a willingness to show up for others .

For those who work there, the rewArd is found in coNneCtion.

For almost 100 years, people from American Fork and surrounding communities have come to work and volunteer there One story, in particular, feels like something out of a real-life superhero comic In 1973, a 13-year-old girl was brought by her mother to the USDC to volunteer for a church activity She continued volunteering until she was hired at 18, and she worked there for 49 years before retiring just last year

Over those decades, the people she worked with became her family She cared for two women in the same apartment for more than 30 years and later attended each of their funerals as

a member of their family It is the kind of loyalty and love that does not often make headlines, but it is exactly the kind of heroism that keeps a community strong

Now that’s a super neighbor.

Mayor Frost said the residents and caregivers at USDC embody many of the qualities that define the city itself.

“The residents of the Developmental Center and the dedicated caregivers who support them each day reflect the compassion, service, and sense of community that make American Fork special,” he said .

Another everyday hero at the center is Tim Matthews, who became USDC’s director four years ago . When asked about getting his start there, he said he did not know exactly what to expect when he first arrived on campus. Though he had grown up in Utah County and spent time in American Fork Canyon, he had never visited the campus or learned much about the work being done there. On his first day, while visiting the medically fragile area, he was deeply moved by the care shown to residents who could not always communicate in typical ways

What struck him most was how well the staff knew each person they served. Through facial expressions, body language, and subtle cues, caregivers could understand what residents needed

and respond with patience, love, and remarkable attentiveness . Matthews said that experience made it clear he was in the right place

Bunker said he has felt that same spirit through his own years of volunteering at USDC “Every opportunity I have had to serve leaves me with a sense of gratitude and love for the residents and caregivers,” he said “They are truly heroes It helps me reset my perspective and priorities in life I ‘get’ more than I ‘give’ when I volunteer there ”

“we celebrate noT onlY the reMArkable individuAlS who call the developMenTal CenTer hoMe, buT alSo the caregiverS whose dedicaTion helpS creAte a place of belonging, digniTy, and friendship,” Mayor FroSt said.

USDC’s impact is not only personal, but practical as well . Bunker said the center employs hundreds of caregivers, nurses, administrators, and support personnel, making it an important part of American Fork’s economy It has also given local residents opportunities to learn skills and gain valuable experience that have carried into future careers

Bunker knows that firsthand. As a teenager, he worked at USDC through an American Fork High School work release program “While earning money while working at USDC was great ($2 75/hour in 1986), I value the experience I gained from that opportunity even more,” he said “It prepared me in many ways to start a lifelong love of enjoying work with a diverse group of people ”

Today, USDC is building on that long legacy with a 15-year strategic plan focused on strengthening services for the people who live there while expanding support for the broader community A major milestone in that effort came last summer with the opening of the Comprehensive Medical and Therapies Building

The new building includes a modernized medical wing, a dental wing, therapy services, and behavioral health services for people with autism, intellectual and

developmental disabilities, and related conditions Leaders hope to expand those services even further in the coming year through workshops, direct consultations, training, respite care, crisis evaluations, and other supports In other words, the hero’s work continues and grows

Mayor Frost said that growth reflects the commitment of both residents and those who care for them “BehiNd everY meAniNgFul acT of care is a caregiver who quietlY gives of their tiMe, talenT, and heArT,” he said “We are proud to recognize both the residents and caregivers of the Developmental Center as part of our Steel Days celebration ”

Bunker said one of the greatest gifts of having USDC in American Fork is the relationship it creates between the center and the people it serves “Many great individuals live and are taken care

of at USDC,” he said . “They love, they laugh, they value friendships . And mostly they teach by being who they are . ”

ThaT may be the truesT superpower of all.

As USDC celebrates its place in the community, residents and leaders are inviting the public to join the Hill Celebration on June 17th and 18th and the children’s parade during Steel Days on July 18th It is a chance to honor the super neighbors among us, the everyday heroes who serve with steady hands, open hearts, and a lasting commitment to one another

“It is an honor for American Fork City to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary and reflect on the enduring principles of liberty and freedom found in the Declaration of Independence. As we commemorate this historic milestone, may we continue to practice patriotism through service, unity, gratitude, and a lasting love of country.”

America 250 is a nationwide celebration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence. It’s a chance for communities across the country to look back on and celebrate American history, and reflect on the future.

groWing up, I alWays saW the MisS american Fork pageanT and thought that it would be fun, buT I didn’t underStand what it waS all about. I didn’t think that I was the “beauty queen” or “pageant girl” type Little did I know this competition would change my life .

After returning home from an LDS mission, I wanted to be more service oriented and get involved in the community . That’s where my platform “Shine Through Service: Discovering Self-Worth By Lifting Others” came from I wanted to make a difference and teach people the importance of service, but I didn’t realize how much this opportunity would change me It has helped me become more confident, discover my talents, and connect me to my community It has pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me to grow in ways I never thought possible

This year I have been able to plan community service projects, connect volunteers to various opportunities, and teach elementary school classes why service is important Throughout it all, my love for American Fork has only grown stronger . YOU ARE INCREDIBLE! I am constantly blown away by the American Fork community and how willing everyone is to show up, give, or help in any way that they can I have loved getting to hear your stories and learn from your experiences Service truly unites us in ways that nothing else can It helps us find purpose and confidence as we learn to make a difference. It also helps us find connection and unity as we gain greater perspective for those around us .

Getting to represent the people of American Fork is truly an honor . It is so much more than wearing a crown and a pretty dress . It is about building community, being a role model, and being a force for good . I am very humbled and grateful for the opportunities you have given

The beach is coming to Steel Days! Join us for an exciting new addition to the Steel Days celebration as we partner with the Utah Lake Authority to bring a full day of family-friendly fun to the beautiful American Fork Boat Harbor on Monday, July 20 from Noon to 10:00 p m Inspired by activities featured at the popular Utah Lake Festival, the Day at the Beach/ Marina will combine outdoor recreation, friendly competition, community gathering, and lakeside relaxation into one unforgettable summer event Whether you want to compete, explore, or simply enjoy a summer evening by the water, there will be something for everyone Because there is limited parking at the Marina, the Haunted Forest has graciously agreed to allow us to use their parking (See map below for the location of the Haunted Forest )

Planned activities include the crowd-favorite Cardboard Boat Regatta, where teams build boats out of cardboard and duct tape before racing around the marina Teams will receive materials and are encouraged to design and build their boats ahead of time for maximum creativity and speed Participants may also have the opportunity to win exciting raffle prizes.

Another featured event will be Paddle Board Jousting, where opponents battle it out on paddle boards using foam jousting sticks in an entertaining tournament-style competition . Safety equipment, waivers, and lifeguard supervision will be provided .

The Huck Finn Fishing makes a splash at the Day at the Beach & Marina celebration Inspired by the adventures of the famous literary character, this event gives kids the opportunity to experience fishing in a way they will never forget. Scores of released into a specially constructed fishing pond, creating the perfect opportunity for children to jump in and try their luck at catching a fish with their own two hands. No fishing poles. No bait. No tackle boxes. No license. Just determination, quick reflexes, and a little bit of luck!

Participants will be divided into age groups and released in waves throughout the evening to ensure everyone has a fair opportunity to participate Once the signal is given, kids will enter the pond and begin the hunt for trout as spectators cheer from the sidelines Age groups will be: 3-5, 6-8, 9-11, 12-14. We’ll have one final round where we’ll open up the pond to anyone 15 or older. CAPITAL PROJECTS

American Fork City continues to invest in infrastructure projects that improve transportation, utilities, public safety, and quality of life for residents. Capital projects are long-term investments that help maintain, expand, and modernize city assets while preparing for future growth. Here are some highlights:

900 W, Microsurfacing Project

As part of the City's ongoing pavement preservation priorities, microsurfacing has been completed along 900 West. This cost-effective treatment helps extend the life of a roadway by approximately 5 to 12 years while protecting the existing pavement and delaying the need for more extensive reconstruction.

100 W. Pavement Rehabilitation Project (Phase 1)

Phase 1 will replace utilities in 100 West from 100 North to 700 North. Utility work includes new water lines, sewer pipe replacement through certain blocks, and storm drain improvements. Phase 2 of this project will occur in 2027 and will include curb, gutter, sidewalk, and roadway improvements.

300 W. 200 S. Roundabout

Work will facilitate better travel to the critical UTA Frontrunner facility for American Fork commuters. This design will tie to the recently completed round-about on the south side of I-15 at the West Frontage Road and 200 South (7750N). Pedestrian access through the round-about is critical as well as proper way finding, striping and signage for round-about users.

Recently Completed Projects

Sewer Rehabilitation Project

The City completed a sewer rehabilitation project that renewed more than 2,300 feet of aging sewer pipe using a trenchless lining method. The project improved system reliability.

300 North & Caveman Boulevard Signal

A new traffic signal was installed at 300 North and Caveman Boulevard to improve traffic flow and safety at the intersection. Completed in February 2026.

In 2025, American Fork invested millions of dollars into roads and infrastructure as part of a long-term plan to improve mobility, safety, and reliability. Street crews patched 748 potholes, replaced 12,000 square feet of sidewalk, treated 370,000 square feet of asphalt, chip sealed nearly half a million square feet of roadway, and crack sealed 1.7 million square feet of roads. 61 % of the total budget in the 2026-2027 fiscal year will be going towards capital projects.

For the first time ever, Steel Days is proud to present the Steel Days Battle of the Bands, an exciting new competition designed to showcase the incredible musical talent found throughout Utah The Battle of the Bands will be held on the Main Stage at Mary and Art Dye Park (1000 N 550 E ) from 7:00 sday, July 23 Local and regional bands are invited to compete for cash prizes, community recognition, and the coveted opportunity to open for the 2026 Steel Days Big Show featuring Red Hot Revolution The winning band will perform in front of one of the largest audiences of the entire celebration and become part of Steel Days history as the inaugural Battle of the Bands Champion

The competition begins with an online submission process where bands will submit performance videos and information about their group A panel of judges will review all entries and select a group of finalists to advance to the live Battle of the Bands event during Steel Days. Finalists will perform live before a panel of judges and a Steel Days audience, competing for top honors and the chance to take the stage at the Steel Days Big Show Judges will evaluate each performance based on musical ability, stage presence, audience engagement, professionalism, and overall entertainment value .

The Grand Parade will be held Saturday, July 25 at 9:00 a m ! Each year, thousands of residents and visitors gather along Main Street to celebrate community pride, hometown traditions, and the spirit that makes Steel Days one of Utah County’s favorite summer celebrations

The parade will begin at 300 West Main Street and travel east along Main Street to 100 East . The route will then continue north to 300 North before heading east to 600 East, ending at American Fork High School

The Steel Days Grand Parade features an exciting mix of creative floats, marching bands, community organizations, local businesses, performers, public safety vehicles, classic cars, and special guests From candy and music to patriotic celebration and hometown spirit, the parade is a highlight of Steel Days for families of all ages

Safety remains one of our highest priorities during the parade. Parade vehicles and floats often have limited visibility, so we ask attendees to please remain out of the roadway and supervise children closely Parade participants have been instructed to distribute candy and giveaways near the curb whenever possible to help keep children safely away from moving vehicles

We also encourage everyone to help keep our city beautiful by disposing of trash properly and helping leave the parade route clean for residents, businesses, and volunteers following the event

For generations, Steel Days has brought neighbors together to celebrate the people, values, and community spirit that make American Fork such a wonderful place to call home

This year’s theme, Super Neighbors Every Day Heroes , recognizes the countless individuals who make a difference in our community every day They are the volunteers who give their time, the local businesses that invest in our city, the first responders

who keep us safe, the teachers who inspire future generations, and the neighbors who quietly serve others without seeking recognition

American Fork City has launched a new utilities dashboard to give residents better access to their utility information in anticipation of future PI rate changes. The dashboard can be accessed through the “My Utilities” link on the city website.

The City wants to support conservation goals and provide resources to residents to make this easier. With the transition to the new utilities dashboard powered by Yoppify, residents will have more tools than ever to track their water use and access

conservation resources. Through this system residents can be notified of issues, like water leaks, which will help them proactively conserve water and save money. They can also receive conservation tips and get access to water wise rebates.

The utilities dashboard through Yoppify will help residents better understand their water use and make small adjustments that can lead to meaningful water savings across the community.

Using existing account email or phone numbers, residents will be able to:

View and pay utility bills

Track water usage (both culinary and pressurized irrigation) Learn about proposed PI rate changes Understand how usage impacts costs
