‘Gentleman’ surgeon hangs up his hat Arthur Hawkes Chances are, if you’ve had a knee or hip replacement, or broken a bone in the last four decades, Dr Evan Jamieson will have played a part in your recovery. Jamieson is an orthopaedic surgeon from Palmerston North Hospital, who has operated on Wairarapa locals for 40 years – and he’s just announced his retirement. Orthopaedic surgeons travelling to smaller hospitals like Masterton were essential due to their wide knowledge and

range of skills, and their contact with specialised units in larger hospitals. While Jamieson was based at Palmerston North, he travelled to Wairarapa each month, and noted how important it was for the larger hospital to provide staﬀ for its neighbour over the Tararuas. John MacCormick had been performing surgery since the late 1960s in Wairarapa, who Jamieson joined at Wairarapa Hospital on his visits. There are now orthopaedic surgeons Continued on page 4

Men go ‘head’ ÿ rst into the wild Arthur Hawkes Mental health among males has become a prominent issue. As attitudes around masculinity have changed, more focus has been placed on the unhealthy behaviours that have been ingrained in the male psyche for centuries. Being tough, competitive, stoic, and not showing weakness have all been staples of manhood in the West, but these come saddled with a lack of true and open expression. There are many sayings that centre around this idea; ‘having a stiﬀ upper lip’, ‘manning up’, ‘growing balls’, etc. But what they lead to is a form of denial – if a man is sad or anxious he has traditionally been taught to cover this up, and to withhold it from himself and others. This has led to deteriorating mental health and extreme insecurity. Logic tells us that force and pressure applied to a static object eventually results in a breaking point, and it is no diﬀerent with the mind. This is why it’s important for men to come together, to learn how to release their worries and troubles out into the world, and to discuss them in the presence of other men – without ‘self-medicating’ [usually alcoholism], and without any degree of denial, which can lead to internal or external violence. This was why Jonáš Koukl established the Wairarapa Men’s Group, which allows men to talk in an open, nonjudgmental environment, and to learn that conversation can help, particularly among fellow men. You might remember Koukl from last week’s Midweek, where we discussed his music workshops. This time, though, the focus is the group itself, and the diversity of its membership. So far, it has

been a great success and there has already been interest in a Women’s Group forming. “The group is open, diverse and intergenerational,” Koukl said. “Groups of local men meet at least twice a

month at various places in the Wairarapa, to learn from each other’s stories, experience mutual support, prevent isolation, improve mental health, and grow strong leaders.” The group is free to join and meets monthly at

indoor community spaces, but also heads oﬀ into the bush for a night-long campﬁre, once a month. The men who attend are of all ages, mainly from Wairarapa, but the group has occasionally hosted participants

range from 14 years old, with the oldest over 80. “There is no pressure – it is totally okay to be passive and just listen, but usually the honest sharing is so powerful and contagious that everyone opens and shares their own stories of struggles or joy.” All the participants are encouraged to co-create the meeting and some of the regular participants are already taking the role of leaders, or are being supported and mentored by more experienced ones. This approach keeps it grounded, variable, and extremely empowering for many. One anonymous member said he had “personally benefited” from attending the group. “It was a big step for me to go out on a work night and get away from my office. It has been well worth it. Thanks to the group I have been associating with one of the members and including him in my regular Sunday walks on the mountain.” Partners of the group’s attendees have also seen the differences from having a space for conversation, talking, korero, or any of the terms that refer to communication. One member’s partner noticed the positive change in her husband after he went to some of the groups. “Now that my husband has a confidential place where he can share his heart and hold that space for others, he’s a better father and partner.” The group has appreciated the support from Ka Pai Carterton, who are currently helping them with the group expenses and applying for future community grants. • If you are interested in attending the group you can visit: www.mensgroupwairarapa.nz, or find them on Facebook.

Masterton Variety Club unveils Arthur Hawkes The Masterton Variety Club, which has recently changed its name from the Masterton Savage Club, has announced its ﬁrst, and last, variety act of the year — a music hall skit, followed by a variety show of people performing their talents, and then a sumptuous afternoon tea, accompanied by piano music in the dining room. The Masterton branch started in 1910 and since then has performed up to 12 times a year. The ﬁrst Savage Club in the country was in Dunedin, founded in 1888. Masterton’s peak membership was in the 1950s. It was capped at 100, with a long waiting list, which led to another type of club being formed, Orphans Clubs, for those who couldn’t get into Savage Clubs. The clubs would regularly host and visit other variety groups across the country, in what were known as ‘raids’ — these would involve a great deal of ceremony and the exchange of gifts between the two groups. Savage Clubs were a social institution in New Zealand during the twentieth century, but have slowly petered out with an ageing membership. Savage Clubs take their origin in Richard Savage, who named a club in London in

1857. The clubs would later develop all over British overseas territories. In New Zealand, they served as a place for men to perform for one another – usually comedy acts, drama skits, and musical numbers – as they drank and smoked, chatting away the evening. Women were allowed to join much later, in 1998, with the current president and pianist, Doreen Wakefield, being one of them. Wakefield is the musical director of the upcoming performance and will provide piano accompaniment . “We’re down to about a dozen members now,” Wakefield said. “About 14 of us are probably active.” Because of the new name [Masterton Variety Club], everything will now need to be changed, right down to

the embroidered curtains that hang on their Albert St stage. The proceeds from the show will hopefully go towards this. Wakeﬁeld explained that the purpose of Savage Clubs was to band together and entertain one another, but that these were traditionally private events. “It was to come together, to put a concert on. And it was never put out into the public arena, because they’d have a hundred or more members, so it would just be for the members of the club.” This has all changed now, and the Masterton Variety Club are now inviting people in to see what they’ve been working on for so long. “We open up with the ‘old time music hall’ [a stage set], where each

person comes on, dressed in all their finery, and sings a song, and then the audience has to sing the chorus again,” Wakefield said. “That’s the first half, the second half we go into separate items; we have singers, we do sketches — some naughty, some not so naughty — we have jokes, poems, a choir.” Ian Palmer, programme organiser, who has been with the club for over 30 years, said they practised every Friday. Wakefield said the group was looking to “move away from the Savage Club identity”. “People either don’t know who the Savage Club is, or if they do, they regard us as a bunch of oldies who go down there and sing songs.”

Palmer and Wakeﬁeld both spoke fondly of a member who had passed away recently, Roy Merriman. “He had a lovely, lovely voice,” Palmer said. “Yes, he was a real Bing Crosby,” Wakeﬁeld added, who also, like Palmer, highlighted the work ethic of all members. “We work hard, we work really, really hard.” For a group of people in

2pm their 80s and 90s, the fact that they practice weekly is testament to their admirable tenacity and drive to performant their best. On the day, Wakeﬁeld will have her piano playing accompanied by Wairarapa double bassist Miles Reay. “And we get everybody going, I tell you!”

‘Evan has been an absolute pleasure to have here’ Continued from page 1 at Wairarapa Hospital, but it’s still in need of staﬀ. “There were no orthopaedic surgeons when I started to come down here, none,” Jamieson recalled. Jamieson also remembered surgeon superintendent Owen Prior in the 1980s as “a truly general surgeon, old school, capable of dealing with almost any surgical problem”. Jamieson also recalled steel hinged joints and

other antiquated methods of joint replacement. Nowadays there’s 3D printing so the new piece will ﬁt perfectly, along with computer-assisted surgery. “Surgeons can now take the X-rays and get computer assistance so they know exactly where to make the cuts.” Something that has troubled the Wairarapa region for a number of years has been attracting quality staﬀ to the relatively underpopulated area. Jamieson said orthopaedics was

no diﬀerent. “In recent times there haven’t been enough surgeons for the workload, so that’s why I’ve carried on. I’ll be here until January just to help out.” When January rolls around, Jamieson will be sorely missed for his quality, his cheer, and his professionalism. At his leaving lunch last Thursday, staﬀ were jostling around the door of the meeting room to have a quick yarn before they had to dive back to work, spilling out into

the corridor. Mair Moorcock, charge nurse manager at Wairarapa Hospital, described the pleasure she’d had working with Jamieson for so many years. “He’s been an absolute gentleman, he’s been coming so long that there are generations of people in Wairarapa who Evan has cared for, thousands of people, lots of children. “Evan has been an absolute pleasure to have here.” Moorcock described

how Jamieson had gone above and beyond for his patients in Wairarapa, despite doing surgery in Palmerston North for the majority of his working month. “When we were very short of orthopaedic surgeons, and we didn’t have any based here, Evan came from Palmerston. “Over the years we had Ian. Then when Ian was sick, Evan would be our back-up and come whenever I asked him. He’d ﬁt in an extra clinic and ﬁll in for people

that were sick.” In a moment of reflection, Jamieson thought about why he got into surgery in the first place, and why he kept on in the same field for over four decades – and he had only good things to say about the many thousands of residents he’d helped with orthopaedic problems. “If you ask me why I do it, or rather why I did it, it’s because I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed the people – Wairarapa people are very good people.”

Charity finds safe homes for cats Arthur Hawkes Since its establishment in 2017, charity KittyCat Rehoming has tried to tackle the problem of stray and abandoned cats in Wairarapa. Founder and Featherston resident Lee Priday recently stepped down, and Rachel Aaltonen has since taken up the reigns. The two women met each other through communications about Aaltonen’s cat, Oscar, who had complex special needs. Oscar passed away last December – Aaltonen then took over the charity as coordinator in June this year. Aaltonen, who is based in Upper Hutt, explained how Wairarapa was a problem area for people leaving unwanted cats. “Wairarapa as a breeding and dumping ground for cats and kittens, which is really sad, it’s a problem.” The charity currently comprises around 60 to 70 people, many of these voluntary foster families, who care for the cats until they can ﬁnd responsible owners. Aaltonen operates as both coordinator and treasurer in an entirely voluntary capacity, and is aided by trustees Kate Curran and Pippa Cain. “We’ve got a Kitty Cat Rehoming phone line now, and we also get a lot of submissions through our Facebook page, which is

probably the best way to get hold of us… It doesn’t pay me anything, but it pays my heart so that’s payment in itself.” The cats are also desexed, chipped, and vaccinated, which is a welcome move in terms of maintaining New Zealand’s biodiversity. Cats on the loose can quickly multiply, resulting in ferals and a loss of birdlife, so it’s important that cats are monitored and controlled in this way. The charity is currently looking to rehome two cats, and always on the look out for volunteers to help with all aspects of rehoming, including fostering. Miss Poes is a gorgeous and one of a kind cat. Rescued from the wild at about 5 to 6 months old, 12 weeks ago. Suki. Poes tends to bond to a particular human or humans, but is naturally a more independent. She enjoys hanging out with people and actively stays around the person she knows and trusts, and she loves to play. Grants let learning continue Aratoi, Wairarapa Museum of Art and History have said they are delighted to be awarded three grants in support of their educational programme, which supports learning sessions for students across Wairarapa, completely free. The recent grants from Masterton Trust Lands Trust, Steadfast NZ Foundation, and TG Macarthy Trust have enabled Aratoi to continue to oﬀer these programmes for all Wairarapa students. Susanna Shadbolt, director of Aratoi, said she was delighted with the announcement of the grants. “This last year has been challenging, but we recognise that arts pedagogy is a vital part of students’ education and must continue through these diﬃcult times. “As well as learning about our culture and identity, and understanding how art is made and expressed, exploring art provides young people with ways to express emotion, especially when dealing with traumatic world events. “Art is important in wellbeing and supporting positive mental health.” Aratoi is also able to employ two part-

Crumbling roads, ﬂooding, stormwater issues, and inadequate rubbish facilities. The South Wairarapa coast is expecting an inﬂux of tourists this summer, but there’s not enough infrastructure to cope, some locals say. Cape Palliser Residents and Ratepayers Association spokesperson Dianne Phelps told South Wairarapa District Council [SWDC] last Wednesday that funds and tourism infrastructure plans were promised three years ago, but nothing had been done so far. “You have 135km of coastline in South Wairarapa, and we’re an integral part of that,” Phelps told the council. “We advertise to come to the coast, enjoy it, but we do not have the infrastructure around us to cope with it.” The association covers the three areas of Whatarangi, Ngawi, and Mangatoetoe along the coast. Phelps said that when the association formed about 40 years ago, rubbish was at the very top

of their priorities. “We’re into another summer, and we haven’t seen any work being done,” Phelps said. She thanked the council for what it had already put in place for tourismrelated rubbish, calling it “adequate” but said that it did not cope with commercial rubbish from the campground or caravans. “Under the resource management consent for those visitors, there must have been a waste management plan in place,” Phelps said. SWDC chief executive Harry Wilson said the council wanted to work with the association and referred them to the council’s assets and services committee. “Assets and services can make sure they’re part of the long-term plan actually building in some of the concerns raised,” Wilson said. battered coastal roads, New Zealand Transport Agency [NZTA] has halved its contributions to maintain Cape Palliser Rd, eﬀective next year. This concerned the council and ratepayers because the bay-side road was often troubled by stormy seas and weather. Phelps also raised concerns about the speed limit and stormwater. She called for the speed

limit to be reduced to 30kmh in the area, or speedbumps be installed. Wilson said the council had been waiting for a district-wide review on speed, triggered by the NZTA plan around State Highway 2. “We think that’s important to make the long-term plan work over the region,” Wilson said. Association spokesperson Kim Hayes also told council there were also a lot of sumps on the South Wairarapa coast that had just about been tar sealed over “which means that they have never been opened for years”. “We need these things ﬁxed because it’s causing ﬂooding on people’s properties.” Wilson acknowledged that work on the South Wairarapa coast needed to “start sooner rather than later”. • The council’s assets and services committee next meets on December 16.

I’m now going to travel up north, then move to Wellington and work a bit harder on some creative ventures that I’ve been neglecting. Wairarapa is all I’ve ever known of New Zealand, and I will cherish the memories I’ve made here for the rest of my life. I grew up in a small village, like Featherston, called Stogursey. At school, I learnt to be a chameleon: an awkward middle-class boy with no roots in my area, confronted with the viscera of deprived, smalltown England. But I’ve also been privileged enough to have the right identity traits to even be able to fake it. Wairarapa felt like somewhere totally new, but also like I’d gone back home. After living in cities for six years, I’d spent the latter half of 2019 in Stogursey with my family. I wasn’t happy, if I’m being honest. I don’t

Arthur Hawkes think I’d been happy for a long time. I’d let laziness around my mental health mould me into someone who didn’t like himself, and I knew I would have to consciously work on both those things if I wanted to progress in my life. I coincided this desire for spiritual change with a physical one. I would move to New Zealand, where I knew no one my age, and commit to a new job. Nine months after my arrival, I feel proud of the person I am, for maybe the first time in my life, but it’s been a difficult journey to get to this point. And there are so many people whose major achievement isn’t dazzling success, it’s just showing up every day, accepting the person they see in the

mirror, and being kind to them. If that’s you then I want to tell you: I see you, keep it up. I also want to thank all the people that have helped me out since I’ve been here. There are too many to name because I’ve met so many helpful, genuine, unapologetic human beings. But most of all I have to thank Emily Ireland. She didn’t just give me my first ‘proper’ full-time job; she helped me start a whole new life, she believed in me, she made me feel valued. She deserves more recognition, but people like her always will, because modesty and selflessness is part of who they are. Anyway, take care folks, and thank you for letting me into your community.

Water storage in Wairarapa FAQs

The resevoir will provide water for the region in dry months and will meet environmental, social, cultural and economic needs of the community. What is water security? This means that as a community we make sure we have water stored somewhere to be available for when it runs out. How do we get water security? By harvesting and storing water when it is plentiful, so that it is available when we need it most. Why does the Wairarapa need water security? The Wairarapa is at the extreme end of climate change predictions, with significantly hotter temperatures and increase in drought expected in the future, according to the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA).

How will water storage help the Wairarapa community? If we have stored water we can use it when the dry weather hits us each year. It will top up the rivers when they become a trickle in dry weather, support towns and businesses, and provide water to farmers so they can grow our food. Will water storage lead to more dairy cows in the Wairarapa? No, WWL has a loan from the Government and as part of that arrangement water can’t be used for further dairy intensification.

Bill check: A tale of two native gulls Anna Whitehead You will be familiar with the Red-billed gull or tarapunga: these are the “fish and chip” gulls which have adapted to life scavenging what humans leave behind. Have a closer look at the next one you see; as expected, their bills, eyelids and feet are red, and they have those distinctive black and white tips to their wing feathers. Despite being the most common gull, populations have crashed in recent years with many possible and overlapping causes. In spite of their rubbish tip sidelines, they primarily feed on ocean krill, especially in the breeding season. When krill numbers decline, times get tough for the gulls. Here in Wairarapa, there are about half a dozen breeding sites that the gulls return to each year. These include Cape Palliser, Te Kaukau Point, Tora, and Castlepoint. Colonies are usually on rock fortresses right on the coast with November and December peak

chick-raising times in these raucous colonies. As with most groundnesting birds, they suffer predation from the usual suspects: cats, hedgehogs, stoats, and rats. The more island-like a site is, with little or no access from the mainland, the better their chances of raising chicks are. And now for the other gull – the Black-billed gull or tarapuka. They are unique to NZ and is the most threatened gull in the world. In spite of the

similarities to the Redbilled [RB] gulls, the habits and diet of the Black-billed [BB] gulls are quite different. Firstly, how to tell the difference: the BBs bill is black but also longer, slenderer and slightly down-curved. Spoiler Alert – juvenile RBs also have blackish bills! Adult BBs are a slightly more slender and elegant bird. Where you find them helps to identify which species: if you see a large number of gulls parked up in a farmer’s field

they are probably BBs. Black-bills eat insects from river and pasture, take insects on the wing, and small fish from the waterways. Quite different from RBs and they are less interested in humans or their leftovers. Black-bills have traditionally nested in the Wairarapa. Their favoured sites are open braided rivers, and they have in the past raised young on the Ruamahanga River and tried to on the island at Henley Lake. Last year the local BBs attempted a nesting colony on the Tauherenikau delta on the shores of Wairarapa Moana. All seemed to be going well with several hundred birds in a closeknit nesting huddle. If approached they would scream at and dive-bomb the intruder. Sadly, soon after the first chicks were hatched, the whole nesting site was abandoned; the adults decamped. Investigations of the dead chicks suggested malnutrition. It seems likely local food sources near the lake were

scarce and the adults took off elsewhere to save themselves. Other attempts to nest there in previous years have often failed due to high lakelevels at the critical times. One hopes the Wairarapa BBs will succeed in raising their young somewhere safe this year. So, next time you see a large gathering of gulls check out what sort they are. Rule of thumb is that if they are scavenging or on the coast they are RBs. If inland, on pasture or riverbeds, they may well be BBs. The key thing is to have a look at their bills! Two decades in quizzing Soumya Bhamidipati

After nearly 24 years in the quiz business, Chris ‘Coggie’ Cogdale has no plans to stop. The quizmaster hosted his 2000th quiz last week, far from his beginnings as an occasional fundraising quiz host in 1997. But not too far – the 2000th quiz was hosted at Charltons in Silverstream, which was where Coggie had originally hosted his first monthly quiz. Two decades later, his quizzes were still a regular event at the club, though he had nine other regular venues across Wellington and Wairarapa.

I don’t think of how hard or easy it is to set the questions, but how enjoyable it is for the people. Coggie enjoyed the social aspect of hosting regular quizzes. “I enjoy talking to people,” he said. “Some people have been going to the quizzes for 23, 24 years. “You only see them for three hours once a month, but you become quite friendly with them.” By 2010, he had had enough of his creativewriting day job and decided to become a fulltime quizmaster. “I was doing well over 100 quizzes a year,” he said. “Last year I did 148 quizzes. “At one stage, I did 31 quizzes in 37 days.” He thought he must be the longest-serving quizmaster in the country,

but quiz goers need not fear – Coggie had not competed in a quiz for at least three years. He liked to create questions with a clue in the theme. For example, the answers to one of his rounds all contained car brands, though none of the questions were specifically about cars. “Like, who replaced Nixon as president of the United States? Gerald Ford.” This did not make creating quizzes any easier, though it did make it fun. “I don’t think of how hard or easy it is to set the questions, but how enjoyable it is for the people,” Coggie said. “I work on: three

questions everyone should get the answer, three the majority should, three the minority and one that’s really tricky.” Although he was often asked which round would be the easiest, there was no clear answer to that. “I don’t know how easy a round is until I put it out there,” he said. “Every time you do a round, you learn something new.” Some quizzes stood out because they came down to a tie-breaker. Others stood out for the wrong reasons, he said. “You find each place is different; it’s a different sphere. “The Thistle Inn in Wellington is very much public servant, and other places are more

blue-collar.” A highlight in Coggie’s quizzing career was when he met The Chase’s Shaun Wallace, also known as ‘The Dark Destroyer’, last year. “That was great. He was so humble and quite different from what I expected.” Knowing the ‘Chaser’ was on a tight timeschedule, Coggie offered to conduct his interview for the Times-Age by phone. “This was the biggest chuff for me. “They said ‘No, no – Shaun wants to meet you’.” The ideal quiz team had a range of ages and gender, he said. “One of the chasers said ‘Quizzing knows no

generations’, and that was right.” The biggest mistake amateur quizmasters made was to use information from the internet without doublechecking it first. “You learn over the years that you don’t want your questions to be ambiguous.” Some quizmasters also tried to beat everyone, which took the fun out of the quiz for participants, he said. At 62 years old, Coggie had considered paring down the number of quizzes he hosted but had no immediate plans to do so. For now, he intended to stay in the ‘quizness’ for as long as he still enjoyed it.

At this time, the big dog is a brilliant feature of our eastern sky after dark. Canis Major is highlighted by the brightest star in the sky, Sirius, often called the dog star. The constellation is very prominent from the Southern Hemisphere. It is visible from most of the populated regions of the Northern Hemisphere, but does not rise to the prominence we experience. You can’t miss Sirius. Just look east after dark and there won’t be anything brighter. More to the northeast [left of the dog], Orion’s three-star belt vaguely points to Sirius, and was a way I used to ﬁnd it when growing up in the

Nick Sault UK. But we don’t need that guidance down here. Being termed “the brightest star” is something of a misnomer. At 8.6 light-years away, Sirius is one of our closest neighbours. In fact, most of the other visible stars in Canis Major are intrinsically brighter, but much further away. Beta Canis Majoris, or Mirzam as the Arabs called it, is slightly west of Sirius, right of it in the picture. It

looks completely dominated by its glittering neighbour, but in reality, it is hundreds of times brighter. It is about 500 light years away and is a blue-white, super-hot giant, approximately 26,000 times brighter than our sun. South of Sirius are Delta and Epsilon, quite close together. These are distant stars also, with Delta, the more easterly one, a whopping 1800 light-years

away. It is a super-giant, and something like 82,000 times brighter than the sun. One small step further south, Eta Canis Majoris, though dimmer looking than Delta, is over 100,000 times brighter than the sun. This one is over 3000 light-years distant. Delta and Eta would be two of the intrinsically brightest stars visible to the unaided eye. Sirius, being such a Southern Hemisphere beacon, was certainly not ignored by Maori. On the contrary, Hinetakarua as they know it, was a prominent navigation aid, and important in Maori ﬁnding New Zealand.

Long before that event, the ancient Egyptians used the rising of Sirius as a portent of the ﬂooding of the Nile. Rather than being a catastrophe, the ancient civilisation would not have existed without that ﬂooding, as their grain cultivation was entirely dependent on it. The ancient Greeks on the other hand saw the star as heralding the coming of a hot dry summer. They believed the sight of the brilliant star made men weaken and women to become aroused. New movement aims to land jobs for young people Marcus Anselm A new programme aims to help Wairarapa youngsters follow Masterton man Reagan Gundersen into a meaningful job. Gundersen, 25, spoke at the launch of the Youth 2 Work Movement in Carterton last Wednesday night. The initiative seeks to pair young workers, aged 16 to 25, with employers – to fill gaps in Wairarapa’s job market. Wairarapa local government, iwi, employers, and youth organisations agreed to commit to work experience and training opportunities. The programme aimed to support young people and supplement the local workforce. Gundersen was one of the first candidates placed into a role. He earned a contract with Carterton District Council [CDC], ending many years of

unemployment. He said being jobless created feelings of “depression and worthlessness day after day”. “I was one of the very many young people who were unemployed for many years and suffered from depression and worthlessness day after day. “And it wasn’t because I wasn’t trying, because I was actively trying to seek employment. “Sure we were bought up on getting a degree and doing what you enjoy and like. But the jobs aren’t there, especially in small

rural towns.” Carterton was the first Wairarapa district to join up to the programme, supported by Wairarapa’s YETE [Youth in Education, Training and Employment] enterprise. Carterton Mayor Greg Lang, Ngati Kahungunu chair Robin Potangaroa, representatives of YETE, and a host of local businesses turned up to support the movement. Wairarapa companies involved included Neer Enterprises NZ, GV Electrical, New World Carterton, McCarthy’s Transport, and Kintyre Meats.

Lang said he was “really pleased” to be part of “another initiative benefitting Wairarapa’s young people”. “I’ve seen through the Mayors Taskforce For Jobs how successful it can be to link the right young person with the right employer, and I’m pleased there are people in our community willing to work together to give our young people more positive opportunities. “This is something I want to be successful across Wairarapa as it will benefit the whole region.” Senior CDC manager Carrie Mckenzie is chair

of YETE’s board. Mckenzie was excited to work together with local businesses. “This movement is a positive shift to help young people get into meaningful employment and support businesses by bridging any gaps in knowledge or training.” Chanel College alumnus Gundersen said he was happy to have a job he enjoyed. “I feel respected and part of the team as soon as I started. Sure, it will take me a while to understand the people and the skills, but I couldn’t be happier.” He said he was “extremely grateful” that his council contract had been extended. Small bird’s super power Dear friends, The smallest bird found in our forest also happens to be New Zealand’s smallest bird. Any guesses? The male is khaki coloured and gets its English name from the green coats that early regimental soldiers used to wear. In females, the coat is streaked shades of brown with a yellow – whitish underbelly. When opposite sex members of the same species are coloured differently like this or have a different physical appearance from each other they are known as being sexually dimorphic. To early Māori, the small bird was a messenger of the god Tāne [the creator of all things]. They named the bird titipounamu; this refers to the twinkle of the precious green stone - pounamu. It’s a very apt name for

a small bird that cannot fly far due to its shortrounded wings. Instead, it tends to dart and shimmer its way through the forest. Here one minute and gone the next. Hard to spot and certainly harder to photograph. Much like trying to find a piece of pounamu at Barrytown Beach on the West Coast. But that’s meant to be a secret spot so let’s not digress. The bird feeds only on insects, in particular beetles, moths, caterpillars, spiders and small flying machines. It weighs the equivalent of one and a half teaspoons of sugar. Or just over one A4 page of paper. That’s very light—just 6 grams.

This is at the upper level of human hearing, and for some people, this will be beyond their capabilities. Quite literally, some people may see this bird but not ever hear it. Which bird are we referring to? The New Zealand Rifleman, of course. So small, you may miss it. So fast, you may not see it. So loud, you may not hear it. Quite remarkable

Vitamin C vital in muscle Midweek Musings

Tim Nelson Now that I’m in my 50s, it’s great to come across an article like the one I read in The Listener on the links between muscle growth and vitamin C. In short, once we get past 50 we lose one per cent of our muscle mass each year. British researchers have found that eating more vitamin C-rich foods leads to higher levels of muscle mass. This is great news for two reasons: the strategy is accessible to anyone who is prepared to add a little more vitamin C to their diet; and the increased muscle mass helps to enrich our lives by enabling us to participate in activities that can make our lives more satisfying and enjoyable. However, just vitamin C on its own isn’t what will lead to a fulﬁlling post50 life, but it will be one strategy in combination with others to help us make the most of our older years. From a personal perspective, I’ll be starting with a few more kiwifruits and oranges in my smoothies. I’ll also exercise regularly, as

this will complement an improvement to my diet nicely. The article does state that this is an observational study. Regardless, beyond muscle mass there are many other positive impacts of vitamin C, with supporting the functioning of the immune system being one such example that seems especially relevant these days.

Do we want easy?

I always enjoy Simon Mundie on his BBC podcast Don’t Tell Me The Score. Mundie interviews sportsmen and women, relating their success and stories to how we can make positive changes in our own lives. However, in the latest episode Mundie shared an anecdote about a person not too many would know about; his 98-year-old grandmother. This woman is still out riding a scooter and is very independent in all that she does. The reason Mundie’s grandmother believes she is so independent is because things have not always

Tia-Claire Toomey is the fittest woman on Earth. She has been the CrossFit Games champion for the past four years, winning her latest title in the very different environment of a covid-19 event. Toomey was almost as dominant as possible, winning nine of the 11 separate events in the competition. I’m incredibly impressed by Toomey, she puts a huge amount of effort

into preparing for events, working alongside Mat Fraser [who was equally dominant in winning the men’s title] in the most brutal of workouts to get to the level that has made her the seemingly unbeatable champion she is today. However, the thing that truly impresses me about Toomey is the way she treats other people. Just minutes after crossing the ﬁnish line she was alongside one of the elite male competitors who was struggling to ﬁnish, encouraging him to complete a workout station. Soon after that she was consoling a female competitor who was distraught after just failing to make the podium.

Kindness is such an important value. Toomey has shown that she demonstrates the value in an authentic way, genuinely caring for others and wanting the best for them, including her competition. She is a class act to follow!

growth strategy and diet scheduling; if we just hope that these moments will come they won’t. It’s too easy to get pulled from event to event as we react to what is happening around us. A strategy to achieve this could be to get up earlier when it’s unlikely that you’ll be interrupted, this could be a time to read, walk your dog [without your headphones on], meditate, write, or any other activity that is calming and relaxing. There’ll be plenty of other time later on to be distracted, so it’s important to plan for and lock in the daily time that you won’t be. It’s only when our minds are still that the water will settle and we can ﬁnd clarity.

Author Derek Sivers said when someone asks you to do something or an opportunity comes your way, your reaction should be that if it’s not a ‘hell yes’ then it should be a ‘no’. The reason for this is that it’s easy to add more and more stuﬀ to our lives when, in fact, we should be focusing on doing what we are already doing better. Another perspective could be to start removing the things from our lives that we don’t have to do that bring us no joy or satisfaction. This will also

Stoic philosopher Epictetus said that our minds can be like muddy water. This is because we are trying to do so much at once and with so much happening in our minds it’s like disturbed water that hasn’t settled, mixing everything up so that nothing is clear. What we need to do is schedule moments of stillness into our days. The key aspect here is

enable us to spend time on the things that are truly important in our lives. What tends to happen is that we get into the habit of thinking the things we know are important will be done when we have the time, when conditions are perfect and all of the trivial calendar ﬁllers are done. A better approach is to schedule what we know is essential and the other things can work around it. The priorities need to be those essential work tasks, spending time with the people you love and care about, staying healthy, doing the things that bring joy and satisfaction. Take control of your life by taking control of your time. Commit to what is essential, as opposed to ﬁlling up your time with what others want you to do.

Grace Prior Farmers say that the clock is ticking for the government to make a decision regarding allowing experienced sheep shearers into the country, but Wairarapa seems to be safe from the shearer shortage because of employing locally. Federated Farmers and Shearing Contractors Association have been vying for an “urgent decision” from the government as to whether they will allow international sheep shears into the country for the summer season, calling the shortage an “animal welfare issue”.

Paddy Mason owner of Shear Expertise said, “we used to have outsourced shearers a few years ago, but we have restructured to focus on hiring local”. Although Mason does not source staff from outside Wairarapa, he does know that some contractors “definitely do” and sees the lack of staffing for them as a potential issue. “We’re one of the luckier districts for shearing.” Mason felt that “something would happen one day” and switched his operation to entirely local staff, leaving him without an issue after covid-19. Beetham said “animal welfare is becoming an issue”. “Shearing largely plays an animal welfare role for the common strong wool breeds,” Beetham said. A capable shearing workforce is needed to avoid issues such as ﬂystrike and animals suﬀering in the summer heat Wairarapa Federated Farmers president David Hayes said many Wairarapa farmers are “operating okay” because they source their shearers locally, but many of them are working with small stock numbers. “There is some problem for some farmers with

larger operations where shearers will not be able to get through as quickly as we’d like, there’s still a gap,” Hayes said. “Lifestyle farmers are unlikely to be aﬀected, but larger farms will be challenged. “Wool is worth so little at the moment, it has been costing farmers more to shear their sheep than

they get in return for their wool – in the current environment it’s tough.” Earlier this year, wool prices dropped from around $2.50 per kilo to a dollar “if you’re lucky”, according to Hayes. He said that prices had been on the rise to about $1.20 per kilo, but this “still isn’t much at all”.

Tom Taylor Torrential rainfall in Eketahuna this month has caused damage to shops on Main St. But a local business owner said that Tararua District Council responded swiftly to mitigate her loss of income. “Our coﬀee shop was completely ﬂooded,” The Lazy Graze owner Sarah Dandy said. Flooding also damaged her neighbouring shop Maison Giftware and Homeware. “It was right through

the shop.” She had to close the cafe for a day to sweep it out and paid her staﬀ for their time even while her business had no income. But she said that the council’s quick response meant she was able to reopen the following day. “The council got onto it … they were excellent.” Sandbags were provided to businesses in the area the morning after the worst of the ﬂooding, but these were later removed. A provision of sandbags would soon be stored permanently in Eketahuna, which would

The checkout operator glared at the elderly woman. “You should bring your own grocery bags. Plastic ones are not good for the environment. We’re trying to be green these days.” The woman replied, “We didn’t have The Green Thing back in my day.” The cashier retorted, “That’s our problem today. Your generation didn’t care for the environment.” Ruby went sadly home still smarting from the cashier’s rebuke. No, she thought. The Green Thing wasn’t around in her youth but we also weren’t polluting the world. In those days we recycled milk, soft drink and beer bottles, sterilised them and reﬁlled, using the same bottles over and over. When we were thirsty we drank from a fountain or used a cup ﬁlled from the tap, instead of drinking out of a new plastic bottle all the time. We didn’t take a gas polluting motor car for

trivial errands when we could walk and enjoy the fresh air. We also caught a bus or tram to work and kids biked or walked to school. Their mums didn’t have a car to provide a 24-hour taxi service. We certainly didn’t ﬁre up a machine using petrol to mow the lawn. Push mowers using human power did the job quite as well and gave us exercise. No need to go to a gym to use a treadmill running on electricity. Because there were no disposable nappies we washed ours, sometimes by hand in a bucket and hung them on the line to dry in the sun and wind, or in front of the ﬁre if it was wet.

We had one or two electrical outlets in a room instead of several sockets to power a dozen appliances. It seems weird using a computerised gadget to beam into satellites to find out the nearest fish and chip shop, and to find our way we used maps. While she was reminiscing about all these things her telephone rang shrilly. Thank goodness I can still hear it and the receiver is big enough to hang on to. She enjoyed a chat with her old friend knowing that she could talk as long as she liked and not be paying for every minute. I know these modern mobile ones do amazing things but what are all those messages flying about doing to the

This included old sheets, towels, and even ﬂour bags, especially during the war. Old jerseys were unpicked and reknitted using the good wool. Back then we had one TV, or radio in the house, not one in every room. The TV had a small screen about 18” diameter; today some of them ﬁll a whole wall. In the kitchen, we used a hand beater, stirred things with a wooden spoon because we didn’t have electric machines.

A century to United captain Jaco Vorster was the catalyst to United’s four-wicket victory over Burger King Red Star at Hadlow School on Saturday. The Coastal Challenge game was originally scheduled for Queen Elizabeth Park Oval but was transferred to the Hadlow artificial because of the saturated pitch block. Red Star posted a useful score of 242-8 on the artificial pitch, with number six batsman Vikas Pal top-scoring with 76 off 54 balls, an innings which featured eight fours and three sixes. Stefan Hook was promoted to first drop and produced a watchful 73 [111 balls, six fours], also combining with Pal for an 86-run fifth-wicket partnership. Pace bowler Ethan Childs and left-arm spinner Quinn Childs were the best of the United bowlers, each picking up two wickets. Hook was immediately in the action in the United innings, having Wairarapa representative opener John McKenzie caught by Dion Knight off the first ball.

That brought two other rep players, Jared van Deventer [62] and Ethan Childs [29], together and the pair added 80 for the second wicket. Once Ethan Childs departed that brought Vorster to the wicket, and he added 69 runs with van Deventer for the third wicket and then 60 runs for the fourth wicket with Oliver Bunny. Vorster was brutal on

anything short or wide smashing nine sixes and five fours in his matchwinning innings. He brought up his century off 72 balls and was brilliantly caught by wicketkeeper Nathan Elliott off Hook’s bowling two balls later for 100. There were some lower order jitters with the loss of Bunny and Quinn Childs before Kris Towgood brought up the winning

runs with a four, and 11 balls to spare. Red Star captain Peter Sigvertsen was happy with their score but said the bowlers didn’t bowl in the right areas, and Vorster took advantage of any loose bowling. The win lifted United into semiﬁnal contention in fourth-equal place with Levin Old Boys in the Coastal Challenge. It was Red Star’s ﬁrst loss of the

championship, but they retain a share of the lead with Paraparaumu.
