But the seed of this story goes back to the Shetland Islands where William Tulloch was born in 1903 on a “croft” or miniature farm. William came to New Zealand with his brother Jim in 1922 at the age of 18, to work on farms in Wairarapa, eventually starting his own agricultural contracting business in 1937 to supplement the income he was getting from milking cows on a leased farm for Masterton’s milk supply.

This was the result of joining the agricultural contracting operations of William and Graeme, with the farm machinery sales and service operation of David.
In 1963, with Graeme and his other son David, William established DW Tulloch & Company Ltd as a Wairarapa retail farm machinery dealership and agricultural contractor.
David had a passion for machines and at the age of 16 had built his ÿ rst tractor out of bits he acquired, including a 1914 Dodge engine. CONTINUES PAGE 2

In 1965 the company began manufacturing farm equipment, including land-levellers and forage wagons based on Gehl kitsets. As the company grew, David set up a Research & Development department. There was hardly a machine sold that was without some sort of “slight alteration” developed by David to suit New Zealand conditions - a tradition that carries on to this day. In 1968, Graeme took over as Managing Director from his father and the company changed direction, strengthening the retail sales division and taking the ÿ rst steps to becoming an importer
got Graeme interested and in 1968 he travelled to Wisconsin, where he visited farms using the system and met a professor at Madison University who explained the science to him. Returning home sold on the system, Graeme decided the Krone TM4/270 mower conditioner, combined with the Gehl ÿ ne chop forage harvester would be perfect for this method. He applied for an import licence for the Krone but was turned down. “After ÿ ve months of trying to convince Trade & Industry of the need of this machine, I went to Wellington for a meeting with the

Even so, it was still hard to convince farmers and agricultural contractors who were being encouraged to use the direct cut system, and sales of machines was slow. “We were spending a lot of money and not paying the bills,” recalls Graeme who for literally years toured New Zealand to promote the wilted ÿ ne cut silage system. But after ÿ ve years things started to turn around and Graeme remembers the moment well.

authorities who said that I wasn’t getting a licence and I wasn’t to apply again. “From there, I went straight over to Parliament with the aim of seeking help from our local Member of Parliament. “I came across one of our local farmers in the lobby who knew the Prime Minister, Keith Holyoake personally and to my surprise he ushered me into the Prime Minister’s o˛ ce so I could explain the need for this mower conditioner. The Prime Minister granted the licence immediately.” The Krone and Gehl combo
“I was running a ÿ eld day at Massey College and Dr Ken Mitchell of the DSIR, which was carrying out silage trials, came up afterwards and said “You stick to what you are doing, you are right.” Today, Graeme is retired from Tullochs Farm Machines, concentrating on his dairy, sheep and cropping farm based at Manaia Road. But his passion for silage, of which he has a profound knowledge, has never diminished. And he credits his visit to the United States in 1968 in the search for a better way to make silage with changing his life.

Celebrating 50 years of Krone in New Zealand Last month Tulloch Farm Machines celebrated the 50th anniversary of its association with German farm machinery supplier Krone. The Masterton business has the second longest distribution relationship with Krone in the world, and the strength of their relationship was illustrated by the intended presence at the celebrations of Krone’s CEO Bernard Krone. Unfortunately, due to a back problem, Bernard only got as far as Australia before he had to return home. Nevertheless, on Tuesday 7th May, a dinner was held at Copthorne Solway Park with 150 guests and a charity auction for Hospice Wairarapa, followed by an Open Day at the Solway premises of Tulloch Farm Machines on Wednesday the 8th May. The relationship between Krone and D.W.Tulloch & Company Ltd - as the business then was called - started in the late 1960s and has continued unbroken for a halfcentury, through the many changes that the Masterton business has seen. It began when Graeme Tulloch was appointed Managing Director
and began the development of the company as an importer and distributor of farm machinery the ÿ rst Krone import being the TM4/270 mower conditioner for silage making.

The relationship became even stronger when in 1990 Krone decided to specialise in grass harvesting machinery, which is also Tulloch Farm Machine’s primary focus, with Managing Director John Tulloch describing it as “a match made in heaven.” Another strong tie between the two companies is that they are both still family owned. “Krone likes to deal with other family-owned businesses,” says John. Bernard Krone visited New Zealand in 2012 and there are regular visits by Krone representatives to Masterton, and vice versa. Today sales of Krone products represent 90 percent of the wholesale farm machinery sales of Tulloch Farm Machines, up from 50 per cent in the 1990s. This year also marks 54 years since William Tulloch established D.W. Tulloch & Company Ltd with his sons Graeme and David.
Today the business is separated into several entities. Tulloch Farm Machines is the wholesale distributor in New Zealand for Krone, Monosem, Einbock and Supreme.

KRONE - cutting edge forage technology in New Zealand for 50 years Celebrating over 50 years in Wairarapa
Working in partnership, Krone and Tulloch Farm Machines have been at the forefront of advances in grass harvesting in New Zealand over the past half-century. In 1968 Graeme Tulloch had taken over as Managing Director of D.W.Tulloch & Company Ltd from his father William and ˜ ew to Montana to investigate the wilted ÿ ne cut silage system used there.

Convinced that this was the future of silage making in New Zealand, he found the perfect mower for New Zealand conditions in the Krone TM4/270, partnered to the Gehl forage harvester.

were imported in the early 1990s designated ‘KS’, short for “Kreisel Swader” or “Rotary Swather”. The second generation, named Swadro, arrived in 2001 with the Swadro 681. Since then the Swadro has grown in popularity with a steady increase in demand over the past 19 years.
The TM4/270 was Krone’s ÿ rst fourdrum mower-conditioner, and at 2.7 metres was nearly double the width of its competitors, producing a perfect windrow to feed the forage harvester. After this machine was well-established, Graeme introduced the smaller model (TM2/165) which quickly became popular.
The Swadro 2000, the world’s largest rake, at a whopping 20 metres wide, arrived in Masterton in 2012.
In 1980 Krone entered the round baler market in New Zealand with a new type of ÿ xed chamber baler that used a slat chain system.

Last year saw the introduction of the Krone TC640 rake. With a variable working width (on the move) of 5.8m to 6.4m, it has the perfect widths for most mower conÿ gurations when raking two rows into one to suit a round baler.
The Krone baler was very easy to operate and could bale in a wide range of crop conditions from wet to very dry. It was quickly accepted in the market with regular technology advancements since, such as introduction of stretch wrap ÿ lm.
The BiG M, the biggest mower conditioner of its kind in the world, came here in 2000, signalling the arrival in the market of an alternative to using tractors to pull
2006 saw the arrival of the ÿ rst Krone BiG X forage harvesters with initial tests a huge success over a range of conditions. The drivers of the accompanying trucks could not believe the power of the BiG X, because they had to step up to gears in the paddock never before used relative to the amount of crop being harvested. More BiG X models have arrived since with the BiG X 780 arriving in May of this year. The ÿ rst BiG X 1180 has been sold and is due to arrive in New Zealand early next year. The BiG X 1180 is presently the world’s most powerful farming machine and has been impressing the industry with its engine power as well as the quality of its chop. All Krone machines are imported into New Zealand in parts and then assembled at a 900 square metre assembly building that was built at the rear of the Solway yard in 2006.

Guests from Germany and throughout New Zealand enjoy Dinner & Open Day Last month Tulloch Farm Machines marked the 50th anniversary of its relationship with German farm machinery supplier Krone with a special Dinner and Open Day.
On Tuesday 7th May, a dinner was held at Copthorne Solway Park with 150 guests in attendance. To end the evening, a charity auction was held for Hospice Wairarapa. This resulted in Tulloch Farm Machines fundraising $2600 for the very worthy cause.

Food and drink were ˜ owing as was the German folk music emanating from the marquee. Prior to the machinery displays, presentations were held in the Tulloch conference room.
The Open Day on the 8th May was a great way to celebrate both companies and their commitment to each other.
Former Managing Director Graeme Tulloch, and current Managing Director John Tulloch told stories of their experiences with Krone over the years, and guests were also treated to a presentation from Martin Eying on the development of Krone as a company. There were also site tours of the Parts warehouse.

Celebrating over 50 years in Wairarapa
A new generation guiding the twenty-first century Managing Director John Tulloch has been the driver behind the wheel of Tulloch Farm Machines for the past two decades. When he was still at school, John used to help out his parents on their leased dairy farm as well as the agricultural contracting side of their business. “I loved work and spent all of my summer holidays either shifting irrigation pipes, milking cows, feeding calves, mowing and baling hay or seeding and rolling crops.” When he was 21, John graduated from Canterbury University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. “I decided at this point I needed to broaden my horizons and gain more work experience.

“I applied for work experience with Krone in the manufacturing heart of Germany and with JF in Denmark. “That following 12 months transformed me, as I learnt what it meant to be German and I met my wife, Henriette.” Over the following 13 years John worked in the aircraft and farm machinery industries in Europe. By the time he came back to New Zealand in 1998, the business that had been D.W. Tulloch & Company
Ltd, had gone through huge changes. In 1984 it had been sold to AIC International but the severe downturn in the rural economy saw it go into receivership. Fortunately, the imported franchise lines had remained with John’s father Graeme. Graeme and David Tulloch with
other interested parties purchased the assets of the company and began trading again as Tulloch Farm Machines. Renewed confidence in the rural market sector saw rapid growth in the business. The national dealer network was re-nurtured and Tulloch Farm

TFM Tractors - serving the local agricultural community for 10 years This year marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of TFM Tractors to serve the rural community from Pahiatua to Wellington with retail sales and service. The catalyst for its creation was Tulloch Farm Machines taking over the franchise for the AGCO group of tractor brands including Fendt and Iseki as well as Massey Ferguson (which at the time was passed on from Mortys Field Service). TFM Tractors have recently taken on the AGCO Green Harvest machinery for hay gear and balers.
