Things to ask your ram breeder and to consider when selecting your rams Ask your breeder for genetic ÿ gures related to breeding goal traits in your genetic plan. Ask to see genetic trend graphs for the ° ock describing genetic change the ° ock has been making.
Ask what percentage of rams are o˛ ered for sale from the number of ram lambs weaned. Select a group of rams based on their overall index values, ensuring your breeding goal traits are included in that index. Consider “balance” across the traits by making sure individual sub-index or BV ÿ gures are not too low or too high.
You are buying a team of rams - it is better to have a mix of good rams than some high ° yers with other lower ranked rams. Throughout the generations, the Daniell family have been pioneers and innovators in their farming and sheep breeding activities and this tradition is being carried on today through several exciting initiatives:
Located in medium to steep hill country northeast of Masterton, Wairere has been breeding rams for 54 years.
Methane emission measuring is being carried out on 170 hoggets with the ultimate aim of being able to select more methane e˝ cient sheep. Looking at importing and further development of a line of wool-less sheep to save on costs.

The motto of “Proven, Predictable and Proÿ table” captures the essence of what Wairere Rams achieve for those who use them. Rams have been bred at Wairere since 1967 when John Daniell began performance recording ewes. Derek and Christine Daniell are the third generation of the family to operate the property. Derek has been honoured for his signiÿ cant contribution to the New Zealand sheep industry. The other aspect of the Wairere business that is not often known is its commitment to the education and training of young men and women who enter the pastoral farming sector or want to advance their careers. Sir Don McKinnon worked at Wairere for John Daniell and says that he beneÿ ted hugely from that experience 62 years ago. The Wairere ram breeding ° ocks total some 7000 SIL recorded Romney ewes and a further 3000 Romney ewes in “ multiplier” ° ocks. The composite, terminal, facial

The scale of the Wairere ram breeding ° ocks is an advantage that clients beneÿ t from. It allows heavy culling of under-performing animals, both ewes and rams. Less than 25 per cent of all ram lambs born are sold as rams meaning that culling and selection pressures are intense. With all sheep at Wairere being mob stocked and rotationally grazed throughout the year, apart from lambing time, Wairere is a rigorous testing ground, ensuring that Wairere sheep have great “shifting ability” and a reputation for being able to recover condition rapidly after tough seasons. Key selection criteria include: The requirement for all ewe hoggets retained to be scanned in lamb, (this ensures early maturity and high fertility). For adult sheep to perform without any drench and young sheep to thrive and
grow under a minimal drenching regime. All ewe hoggets have been mated in every year since 1966 and are lambed unshepherded. Selection for easy care lambing and against bearings has been applied since the ° ock was established in 1966. Since 2001 all ram lambs (up to 7000) are ultrasound scanned for eye muscle area each year (correlated to meat yield) and this measurement is included in the SIL index. Wairere culls heavily for other “nonproductive” traits that increase work. Dags, feet and poor structure are regarded as priorities for culling. As members of the Wairarapa Romney Improvement Group, considerable e˛ ort has gone into improving the saleable meat yield of the Romney ° ock with large scale progeny testing having been undertaken from 1994 until 2013.

Wairere sells all rams by private treaty and operates a “price bracket” system whereby clients choose the price they wish to pay and Wairere guarantees that all those purchasing at that price are treated equally, thus allowing the introduction of new clients without any disadvantage to existing buyers. Glendonald South Su˜ olk Stud was founded in 2004 at Bideford with the purchase of the Te Repo Stud from Norsewood. Further purchases of ewes were made in 2006 from Capethorne Stud, Canterbury, and in 2009 the complete Rakaunui Stud from Hawke’s Bay. Turanganui Romneys The Turanganui Romney ˛ ock established in 1907 by Holmes Warren and is still operated by the Warren family 114 years and 4.75 generations on. Based in and around Pirinoa on Wairarapa’s south coast, Turanganui is home to 4500 ewes, all used in the production of commercial and stud rams. Focusing on an even balance of production, the ewes are capable of 150% plus survival to sale with low wastage and good growth rate. Each year over 7000 lambs are tagged

Breeding sheep with lower methane emissions is possible, thanks to a 10year multi-million dollar collaboration among Pastoral Greenhouse Gas Research Consortium (PGGRC), New Zealand Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Research Centre (NZAGRC) and AgResearch. Individual sheep vary in their levels of methane emission and these di˜ erences are passed on to the next generation. Though progress is slow (around 1 per cent per year, with single trait selection), it is cumulative and no detrimental associations with production or health traits have been found to date.

Like other Breeding Values, this new Methane BV will be delivered via B+LNZ Genetics’ New Zealand Genetic Evaluation. HOW IT WORKS AgResearch has developed a trailer with small portable accumulation chambers (PAC) that estimate daily methane emission for individual sheep. In this way, breeders can have their sheep measured on their own farm. A minimum of 120 animals must be measured. PGGRC general manager Mark Aspin says the new breeding value takes advantage of the fact individual sheep vary in their levels of methane emission and these di˜ erences are
passed on to the next generation. “This is a global ÿ rst for any species of livestock. Launching the methane breeding value gives New Zealand’s sheep sector a practical tool to help lower our agricultural greenhouse gases. This is signiÿ cant. “Up until now, the only option available to farmers wanting to lower their greenhouse gas emissions has been to constantly improve their overall farming e˝ ciency. “This takes us a step further – towards actually lowering sheep methane emissions, in keeping with the sector’s commitment to work towards reducing its greenhouse emissions.”

Glenbrae Wiltshire Wiltshire sheep are becoming better known in the farming industry, due to the many beneÿ ts they produce. The most common trait of the Wiltshire sheep is that it sheds its ° eece, which makes it attractive as a breed to farmers wanting to save time and money. The less wool a ewe or lamb produces, the more energy it has to produce meat. Thirty percent more energy is required to produce a kilo of wool than a kilo of meat. This is a good trait when you look at those farmers wanting to produce a large lean lamb early. The Wiltshire produces a large, lean
heavy muscled carcase with more meat production than a normal ewe. All Glenbrae Wiltshire’s rams are selected from twin bearing ewes and must be 100% shed at weaning with considerable emphasis on thickness, muscling and structure.
All replacement ewe lambs must be 100% shed in January and be structurally correct, grow no more wool than 3 to 4cm before shedding and go to the ram as a hogget. Grenbrae is located on ° at to medium/ steep hill country in the central Hawkes Bay at Porangahau. One of the things that attracted Martin and Mary Taylor to the breed was the easy care. “We have also developed our own system of foot shape assessment so that we know we have done everything we can to make sure the sheep are sound and have the evidence to back that up.
In 1999, Simon Prouting followed family tradition and established his own stud farm with a ° ock of Poll Dorsets.
“All the rams are eye muscle scanned before they get to 200 days. We like to scan in early autumn to identify the early maturing, high growth rate sheep, with high eye muscle, meaning good yielding lambs, so farmers can get their lambs o˛ as quick as they can and get another lot through before the next winter, if that is a requirement.”
His father Joe had started Rocklea in 1972 with South Su˛ olks, and when Simon, Fiona and their three young boys moved to Dannevirke in 2008, they added his father’s South Su˛ olks to the stud, after he retired. Today Rocklea is the largest South Su˛ olk sheep stud in New Zealand, mating over 550 South Su˛ olks and 200 Poll Dorset ewes on the 660-hectare farm just out of Dannevirke. Rocklea puts a big focus on early maturing, easy doing, high yielding lambs with high selection pressure, Simon says. A commercial farmer as well as stud breeder, Simon uses good old-fashioned sheep farming sense as well as modern

measurement tools to produce the sorts of rams commercial farmers are looking for. “We do a lot of DNA testing through Lincoln College for foot rot resistance. All sires are DNA tested and 20 percent of the progeny we sell are also DNA foot scored. All ewes are registered with SIL and all rams are on the SIL index. “We also do our own foot analysis. Each ram sold, as well as our ewes, has a foot shape assessment score of one to ÿ ve, one being good and ÿ ve bad.
While most Rocklea rams are sold to be used over commercial ° ocks, every year Simon sells a small number of his best rams to other studs. Te Awaiti Perendale Stud enjoying rapid progress Te Awaiti Perendale Stud has been beneÿ ting from an enthusiastic stud manager, supported by modern technology and sound advice, leading to some of its rams being in the SIL top 20 per cent for the North Island. Te Awaiti Station, owner of the stud is an iconic and steep 6618 ha farm on the Wairarapa coast, east of Martinborough. Originally known as Parakowhai Stud and established in 1966 by Mr Thomas Cranswick the stud has been noted for hardy fast growing meaty lambs. The stud is now managed by Sarah Wakelin from a Martinborough base. Historically, the stud focused primarily on producing hardy animals for challenging environments, Sarah says, and this is still a strong trait.
Sarah has beneÿ ted from the experience and knowledge of Dayanne Almeida, Genetics North Island Area Manager and Technical Lead for Zoetis. “We have been investing in DNA technology to accelerate the rate of genetic gain on the ° ock. We use Zoetis Genetics Shepherd Complete@ package which enables us to run our stud ° ock just as our commercial clients run theirs. “Ewes are multi-sire mated and lambs are DNA sampled at docking to accurately identify parents.
But the Te Awaiti Perendales of today are also noted for their high fertility and high percentage lamb growth.
“Genomically enhanced breeding values are used to select potential candidate sires for the next season.
Sarah has lifted the stud’s pregnancy test results by 35 per cent over the past three years through a strict culling process, and the purchase and retention of better sires.
“The accuracy added by genomics and DNA parentage provides more conÿ dence that ÿ gures and performance are matching to ensure maximum return for our clients.”
“Last year we dropped the ° ock down to 230 breeding ewes to lift the stud’s maternal worth.
Sarah uses an array of Tru-Test technology to assist in decision-making about feed, health treatments and ° ock size management, and Electronic ldentiÿ cation (ElD) so individual animals can be tracked through their entire life cycle via an electronic ear tag.
“Now we don’t retain anything under 1600 maternal worth which is above the national SIL average.”
EID tagging provides an opportunity to better manage the individual performance of those animals. Last year Te Awaiti Perendale Stud had one ram in the SIL top 35 for the North lsland and two sires in the SIL top 20 per cent for the North lsland. “l have been fortunate to have the right tools and equipment to enable me to make the best use of modern technology to
improve the stud,” says Sarah. “This, coupled with the close involvement of Dayanne and Zoetis has resulted in the rapid progress of our stud to new levels which is quite exciting!” This year Te Awaiti Perendale Stud has 60 rams for sale which it will be selling on farm. stud has gone from strength to strength. Three years ago the couple purchased Hillcroft Romneys whose ° ock doses at 0.5mg/kg for facial eczema tolerance.
Malcolm and Selina Wyeth will have their top 40 Romney rams available to purchase at their annual farm sale on Tuesday, November 16.
Malcolm is building on this with both this new ° ock and his existing one. FE is a challenge for North Island customers, particularly on the East Cape, so having FE tolerant genetics is important to the stud.
The sale will show o˛ the best genetics Mana Romney Stud has to o˛ er.
The couple have three farm units around Masterton - at their home farm at Gladstone, as well as Wainuioru and Mikimiki.
Rams are selected on SIL performance data rating from 2000 to 3500 on the index and structural attributes. The ° ock is scanning at 180-200 per cent with the genetics well linked to other breeders. This has enabled quicker genetic progress and allows Mana Romney Stud to benchmark itself. Breeding objectives include fertility targeting ewes with the ability to have two lambs weaning at 35-40kgs each, survivability, and good milking and mothering ability. Carcass conformation is important, aiming for rams with solid hindquarters and thick loins.

Motu-nui Rams
The foundation of the stud is Romney, and this is still their core business.
The home farm is where the stud breeding ewe ° ock resides and the ram hoggets due to be sold.
In recent years they have also developed their own high performance maternal breed, branded the “mr”, incorporating Texel, Coopworth and East Friesian genetics into a Romney base.
All ram hoggets are eye muscle scanned. Intramuscular fat is also recorded including scanning for skin thickness.
Malcolm is a fourth generation Romney breeder and has had a stud ° ock since he was 15.
The farms run 5500 stock units in total, mainly Romneys with a small number of stud Su˛ olk, Suftex and Romdale and 150 Friesian bulls.
Only a few breeders scan for skin thickness but Malcolm believes scanning at 5mm or better improves survivability.
He worked in the South Island before returning to the family farm, and now has over 30 years in the industry.
The rest of Mana Romney Stud’s rams are sold privately each year and include Romdale, Su˛ olk and Suftex.
They farm on harder hill country in an area known for its tough summer dry and wind. The ewes are put under a lot of pressure, which has produced a hardy type that shifts well to other areas of New Zealand.

What is the Falkirk Index System? The Falkirk Index System is a holistic approach to livestock measurement, assessment and selection. About the Falkirk Scientific Foundation Ian Walsh is Managing Director of the Falkirk Scientific Foundation and the key developer and promoter of the Falkirk Index System. He has been involved in farming his entire life and has been a dedicated career producer and breeder for 62 years. Ian was greatly influenced at an early age by his paternal grandmother who was a profound judge of livestock and reliable genetic material. No such thing as a perfect sheep SIL is sometimes asked by farmers where the best rams or bulls are. The simple answer is that it depends on what you want, and is qualiÿ ed by saying that most ° ocks and herds contain good animals with some better suited to some buyers than others. There isn’t a “perfect sheep” for all New Zealand farms. This is because of variation in climate, topography and management systems which in° uence feed supply, both quantity and quality, disease incidence and other challenges. Some of these can be controlled through management but others cannot, and they can ° uctuate wildly between years. Then there is the market for lambs with various speciÿ cations commanding premiums at di˛ erent times.
Sheep performance is the sum of genetic potential and environmental in° uences. When rams are bought we are looking to improve that ÿ rst component, the genetics, in the face of challenges the environment throws at us. Remember that the same genetics can deliver di˛ erent results in di˛ erent years or on di˛ erent farms. You don’t have measures of genetic merit for commercial ewes, but you can look at genetic merit of past ram purchases and consider this in relation to how much you want to shift traits. So how can you get a feel for the genetics best suited to your farming operation? Start by listing those performance characteristics you want to improve and match these with corresponding measures of genetic merit -
eBVs and indexes. Aim to record merit of the rams you buy and get used to the scales of genetic merit used. From this you can get a feel for how those genetics ° ow through to your ° ock. This can be hard to do when the environment throws big challenges at you some years, but with experience it can help guide future selection decisions. By monitoring genetic merit of rams you buy over the years you will develop knowledge that can deÿ ne what to look for when buying rams. So while there isn’t one sheep that is perfect for all farms, for every farm you can ÿ nd good sheep by knowing what you are looking for.

Longview Perendales Longview Perendales was registered with the New Zealand Perendale Society in 1986 with 160 homebred ewes.

The stud ewes are run with a large commercial ° ock on Rangiora Trust, a 2121ha farm situated in behind Tutira, Hawke’s Bay.
“We started facial ecezma tolerance testing nine years ago. This year we will dose at 0.48 or above. We are producing sheep with worm tolerance - testing for 27 years for fertility, survivability, wool, muscling and meat yield.”
Rangiora comprises mainly Taupo pumice soil. The terrain is mixed from some ° at to medium and steep hill country. “We originally focused on breeding a ewe that had a good jacket of medium wool and regularly reared twins or better.” “Our focus changed to incorporate new challenges in sheep farming. We have been worm tolerance testing our stud ° ock since 1994 and now test both ewe and ram lambs every February.

The Hume family roots in the Pirinoa district go back to the 1850s when David Hume’s great great grandfather bought the land of which Gleniti is now a part.
To make genetic progress, selection must take place in an environment which puts pressure on the traits you want to improve. Gira° e would never have evolved with long necks if there wasn’t a shortage of low hanging food!
Most of what Bill knows about sheep he learned from legendary romney breeder and near neighbour Holmes Warren.
Since then the Group has been instrumental in improving the production of the breed. They have made good use of each of the recording schemes that have been available during that time and have had advice from the best animal geneticists including Professors Al Rae and Dorian Garrick, and Dr Mark Young. Recording was initially with National Flock Recording, then with Sheeplan, and now with Sheep Improvement Ltd. After 50 years of recording, there is high accuracy in the breeding values that have been generated by SIL, says David. “These breeding values are the basis of the index that we have used for our selection that has identiÿ ed the sheep with a balance of productive traits that gives the best return to those using our rams.” In recent years this balance of fertility, survival, growth rate and wool weight has

Te Whangai The breeding philosophy at Te Whangai is very clear. We believe that for commercial farmers to run an ever increasingly more e˝ cient and proÿ table business they must focus on continuously getting more for less, i.e. more production from less input.
Gleniti has 1700 stud ewes docking between 150-165 per cent on the South Wairarapa property. It sells about 300 rams a year.
David and Bill Hume in the yard at Gleniti brought the Gleniti Flock close to optimum levels, David says. “The ranking of our rams by Zoetis’ “Sheep5K” is very similar to SIL’s ranking. We are hopeful that the DNA analysis, while continuing to hold the beneÿ ts of our traditional selection, will make it possible to incorporate other beneÿ ts such as longevity, muscularity, tenderness, meat distribution and FE tolerance.” Gleniti’s high stocking rate puts enough pressure on its sheep to identify those that don’t thrive, David says. “Mothering ability is very important. It is clear that a di° erent type of sheep has developed with selection for growth traits while feed is always at a premium than those developed where feed is plentiful. Traits in focus From 1970, the immediate focus was to lift fertility and develop an easy care animal. This was the same for most modern breeding groups. By the early 1990s the average “number of lambs born” to the recorded ewes was over 190% as only twinning two tooths were retained. Fertility, survival and milking ability were strongly entrenched in the ˜ ock. The 1990s saw the beginning of a new and big e° ort to select sheep that would continue to grow while under a summer/ autumn internal parasite challenge. Consistent with our philosophy, this selection must take place in a known parasite challenging environment.
A comprehensive programme developed by AgResearch has been in place for 25 years and involves regular weighings of undrenched hoggets through the autumn. Wool weight still plays an important part in our sire selection and all ram hoggets are side sampled, with the long term aim of being able to put a true value on the key processing attributes of bulk, micron, colour and yield. With the side sampling information we can assist you to lower your micron count and target higher value per kg. Longevity has always been a focus. It is more e˝ cient to carry a high producing older ewe than extra ewe hoggets and also allows heavier culling of replacements. Recorded ewes are not culled for age, rather just production. We are embarking on a programme to incorporate FE tolerance into our genetic o° ering while still retaining the key attributes of the Te Whangai ˜ ock. The ˜ ock was located near Tirau in Waikato and with the purchase, Arahura joined the Advanced Romney Designer Genetics group of farms throughout New Zealand which Makino belonged to. Paul and Dayanne are leasing Glenside, an 850ha sheep, beef and deer farm at Gladstone. Paul has an extensive 30-year background in agriculture and education both in New Zealand and overseas including Director of Farms for Taratahi Agricultural Training Centre, and he is chairman of the Beef + Lamb New Zealand National Farmer Council. Paul has been involved in various agricultural and social research projects in conjunction with Massey University, AbacusBio, Alliance Group, Beef + Lamb Genetics, and AgResearch. He is operating the Beef + Lamb Genetics Hill Country Central Progeny Test ˜ ock on Glenside. Originally from Brazil, Dayanne has been extensively involved in ram breeding, having worked previously for Wairere Rams as Research and Development Manager while completing her master’s degree in sheep genetics and breeding through Massey University. Dayanne is Zoetis Genetics Sheep Technical Lead helping commercial and stud farmers achieve their breeding goals.

Glenside is traditionally summer dry and winter wet. The commercial ewe ˜ ock is focused on key maternal traits including reproduction, growth and ewe body condition. All the hoggets are mated annually with only the in-lamb ones retained. Paul and Dayanne plan to: Continue recording for facial eczema, and worm resistance and worm resilience. Maintain WormFEC Gold and FE Gold ˜ ock statuses with no compromise on production traits.
