WAIRARAPA leads the world with NZ CYCLE CLASSIC Despite Covid-19 restrictions preventing many international riders from competing in next week’s New Zealand Cycle Classic, there is still plenty of international interest.
Cycling New Zealand Athlete Development Lead and National Road Selector Graeme Hunn is excited these racing opportunities have remained available despite the disruption and the opportunity this presents for more NZ riders to take part.
Wairarapa will host the ÿ rst UCI-sanctioned road cycling event in the world next week and race director Jorge Sandoval is excited. The ÿ rst four stages of the New Zealand Cycle Classic will be held in the Wairarapa from Wednesday, 13 January while, for the ÿ rst time in 10 years, the ÿ nal stage will be held in downtown Wellington on Sunday, 17 January. As part of this ÿ nal stage – a fun, community event called Cycle The Golden Mile will also be held (see next page for more information).
“We commend the perseverance by the race organisers to keep these events on the calendar despite the challenges they have faced and especially the impact travel restrictions have on their ability to host international riders.
The New Zealand Cycle Classic is a UCI level 2 sanctioned event and the sole Oceania UCI stage road event being held in New Zealand this month after all six Australian races usually run early in the year, including the Tour Downunder, were cancelled because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The UCI, the world body, granted dispensation to Masterton-based race director Jorge Sandoval to hold the ÿ ve-stage event and allowed full sanctioning status and o° cial UCI points to be given to riders, without the mandatory number of international teams competing because of border restrictions.
“These events are aspirational to our young domestic riders and are a critical development opportunity and with the exceptions made by UCI more young riders can now take part and they will be joined on the start line by some of our World Tour and international professional riders who have remained or returned to New Zealand due to the cancellation of other races.”
Two other events being staged in Manawatu – the Gravel and Tar Classic and Gravel and Tar Femme – have also received dispensation.

The following morning riders complete a 158.1km stage heading north of Masterton towards Eketahuna and back, before a small hill climb sees them ÿ nish outside the Masterton Golf Club in Lansdowne. The in’s and out’s of the NZ Cycle Classic Each team competing in the New Zealand Cycle Classic will have a clear strategy – whether it’s to win the overall tour title or claim a race jersey such as the King of the Mountains or leading U23 rider. Typically, their strategy will see the team working together to protect their lead rider and ensure they are in the best possible position at the end of a stage for a sprint ÿ nish. The lead into this can involve “drafting” which experts say can save from 20 to 40 per cent of a rider’s energy in a long event. The team may have a rider who sets the pace for everyone else. After a short stint in front of the main group or “peloton”, they’ll move back and let another rider take over. Team leaders tend to hang back in the bunch to conserve energy, while their teammates take turns out in front. More advanced strategy can come into play when someone tries to “breakaway” from the peloton. This “attack” or “break away” is a tactic used to try and split the ÿ eld.
An attack often prompts a “chase” which sees members of the peloton switch to a higher speed and attempt to “close the gap” on the attacker. If the peloton decides not to chase, an individual might try to “bridge”, or chase on their own. If a rider or several riders surge ahead of everyone else, the competitors may take on the burden of quickening the pace of the ÿ eld. Or the teammates of the breakaway rider could attempt to “block” rivals from mounting a chase. Teams can also mount group attacks. In this case, one rider surges ahead and forces a rival team to lead a chase. As soon as the peloton catches up, another rider surges ahead. The goal is to tire out the opposing teams and soften them up for a run to the ÿ nish by the team leader. At the end of each stage, jerseys are awarded to the Tour Leader (yellow), Sprint Ace (green), King of the Mountain (white with red polka dots), Most Aggressive (orange) or U23 (white). These riders then wear that jersey in the next day’s race.

Cycling glossary The New Zealand Cycle Classic is held over ÿ ve “stages”. One stage is raced per day. The results from each stage are cumulative and determine the overall winner of the tour. The total distance of the NZ Cycle Classic is over 500km across ÿ ve stages.

individual have successfully opened a gap ahead of the peloton. The “Race Director” moves back and forth through the race in a vehicle clearly labelled. The Race Director ensures everything is safe and working well for the race. The “Race Commissaire” oversees the “Convoy” of team vehicles following the race and ensures everything is within the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) rules.
Convoy Team cars and other vehicles carry food and drinks, spare bikes and parts and communication systems to keep the riders and operations running smoothly for the long stages.
