Thankfully, neither does the Wairarapa Centre of the Cancer Society - nor the generosity and goodwill of the wider Wairarapa Community. The Wairarapa Centre, along with its enthusiastic team of volunteers and business sponsors, is gearing up for the 2021 DaË odil Day appeal, which kicks oË this Friday. Since it began in 1990, DaË odil Day has grown into an iconic Kiwi celebration: with over 11,000 collectors taking part each year, and close to $4 million raised nationwide. This funding goes towards the Cancer Societyâs support services for people with cancer, and ground-breaking research into cancer treatments (see more on page 5). As the Society receives no government funding, the Society is heavily reliant on public donations to make all of this possible. Research by the Society has conĂż rmed that the number of New Zealanders aË ected by cancer has doubled in the past 30 years â and is set to double again by 2040.

The Digital DaË odil is back again in 2021 â displayed on Cancer Society posters throughout Masterton CBD. Therefore, the Society is calling for âdouble the [fundraising] eË ortsâ nationwide. This year, after the success of contactless donations in 2020, the public is still able to oË er its support digitally â making an online donation through the DaË odil Day website (www.daË odilday.org.nz), or via ANZ (anz.co.nz).
QR codes will also be available at the Wairarapa Centreâs pop-up shop at 98 Queen Street (next to Trade Aid), which will open once we are back to Level 2. At the pop-up shop, people can purchase classic DaË odil Day merchandise, such as silk daË odils, daË odil lapel pins, pens and teddy bears, as well as fresh daË odils.

My treatment included invasive breast surgery, chemotherapy and 12 months of Herceptin â a trial drug which, in combination with chemo, was going to improve my overall survival. Those 12 months were tough. I felt my whole identity was challenged with the consequences of surgery and hair loss from chemo.

Nearly 10 years later, I am grateful and privileged to be part of the next âsisterhoodâ, and to provide care, support, advice and hope to others. While cancer doesnât stop, Iâve witnessed that love and support from family, friends, colleagues, neighbours, and cancer support agencies doesnât stop either. And I realised that I donât have to stop. Cancer has not stopped me from becoming a mum to my adorable daughter. Cancer has not stopped my successful career in real estate. Cancer has not stopped me from pursuing my dreams and embracing adversity. My message for young women is that cancer doesnât stop because youâre âtoo youngâ. But you can be the diË erentiator to your cancer success. Be your own best advocate, align yourself to organisations that can support you - and donât stop!
