Our cover baby Alaya Cooper, delightfully portrayed on our cover, is the second daughter of Arnia and Ethan Cooper of Masterton. They also have a three-year-old girl, Aubree. Alaya was born on 29 January 2019 and has been a ‘cheeky delight’ since she arrived, according to her Mum. She has slept well and has settled well to an in-home daycare with the plan to attend He Pounamu Early Nurture at Dalefield. It’s a great home away from home for baby Alaya as her parents are very involved with their business Cooper Farm Services, based out of Carterton.

Welcome to our Baby Book featuring 120 babies born in Wairarapa throughout 2019. Generously sponsored by Pak’nSave Masterton, it is a great collection of this region’s youngest citizens. Author and teacher Elizabeth Stone described making the decision to have a baby as ‘momentous.’ It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking outside your body.” Many people have admitted once they have become a parent, the word ‘I’ is hardly used again in the same selfish or self-indulgent vein. Life with children becomes all about sharing and compromise – in the most beautiful of ways.
This production endeavours to not only show off our babies but also give handy hints about parenting and the services Wairarapa has on offer. Plunket – a unique Kiwi institution Plunket provides baby and family health support through free home and clinic visits. For 113 years, it has provided information, support and developmental assessments at varying stages from birth to five years. Part of that care includes home visits in those vulnerable early weeks after birth, and then clinic or further home visits (if necessary) for children up to five years old. Visits can also take place at preschools, marae and other community facilities. Each visit gives the opportunity to discuss parenting, family issues and the child’s health and development. Nutrition, breastfeeding, sleep, safety, behaviour, growth, hearing and vision are amongst many topics raised. Plunket clinics are run in every Wairarapa town. All this is the magnificent legacy of Dr Frederic Truby King who helped form the Plunket Society at a meeting in the Dunedin Town Hall 14 May 1907. At age 22, New Plymouth-born King left a career in

banking to pursue one in medicine. He studied medicine and public health in Edinburgh, then returned to New Zealand in 1888 with his wife Isabella, after eight years abroad. The following year Dr King was appointed medical superintendent of the Seacliff Lunatic Asylum, north of Dunedin. As a childless couple in the early 1900s, Dr King and Isabella took in an infant. This springboarded his attention towards infant care and feeding, a field he linked with the prevention of insanity and his experimental work with nutrition. The newly formed society was initially known as The Society for the Promotion of the Health of Women and Children. In 1914, it became The Plunket Society after Lady Victoria Plunket, the wife of the governor and an ardent supporter of Dr King.
Karitane Homes for babies began in Dunedin and spread around the country. These operated both as training bases for nurses and as care units for babies. Mothers were educated in domestic hygiene and mothercraft practices based on Dr Frederic Truby King Dr King’s ideology of with child 1932

The Plunket philosophy became parenting lore in New Zealand, and within three decades it was credited with giving this country the lowest infant mortality rate in the world. In 1980, it was granted Royal status. Plunket nurses have always been supported by women on voluntary branch committees. There were around 1,000 volunteers in 2017, a significant drop from its heyday of around 35,000 in the 1950s and 60s. In 2018, Plunket adopted the vision ‘In the first 1,000 days we can make the difference of a lifetime.’ Dr King certainly made a difference. When he died in 1938, he became New Zealand’s first private citizen to be honoured with a state funeral.

Ask around for other parents’ experiences, trust your own instincts, watch your child when visiting centres, note how staff engage with the children and consider the future move to school. Early friendships at pre-school carried on into school, help with an easy transition. Things to consider: Centre policies – especially worth checking out policies on food and nutrition, health and safety, illness and how they deal with children’s behaviour. Philosophy – Ask about the Centre philosophy. This is important because it can tell you what really matters to the staff and whanau. Ask yourself if it fits with your and family values?

Staff/children relationship – how welcoming are the staff? Do they take an interest in you both?
Ratios – this is the number of teachers to children. The minimum number of teachers to children under two is one teacher to each five children. Over the age of two, the minimum number is one teacher to every 10 children. Staff qualifications – All qualified teachers have at least a three year degree. Find out how many teachers are qualified and who are still in training. Culture – Look for a centre that celebrates diversity. This will provide great learning opportunities for your child because children’s self-esteem is built on their culture, language and identity. Settling in – When you have selected your centre, think about the best way to settle your child. Your child may want you to be with them for a few sessions. Talk with the teachers, seek their advice and set up a ‘settling plan’ together.

May Best Start Tax Credit Payments Inland Revenue’s Best Start payments are weekly payments of $60 per child (maximum $3120 a year) for the first year of a baby’s life. If the household income is less than $79,000, then the payments continue until the child turns three. The Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Trust was established nationwide acknowledging the special role many older people have in raising their grandchild. There are around 7500 grandparents filling this parenting role around the country. Wairarapa has a support group of Grandparents Raising Grandchildren with around 70 members. Sometimes you can be so caught up in those precious times of caring for your baby and children that you forget to record them. This is when children’s photographer Liz Rikiti steps in. She specialises in photographing the maternity stages, the birth process, newborn babies and the children and families which surround them. Initially she was to concentrate on purely newborns but she says they always came along with parents and often siblings and before she knew it, there were family photos being taken too.

With several years of experience in the grocery industry and having passed all the necessary tests, the parent company Foodstuffs gave Andrew the official nod to take on PAK’nSAVE. Originally the Summervilles were from Auckland and had ended up in Wellington where opportunities opened in the grocery trade, the latest being at the Karori New World. Andrew had spent six years training and experiencing all facets of the industry by this time.
Andrew is especially proud of the PAK’nSAVE philosophy of being cheaper overall than all its competitors. “That doesn’t mean each and every item is the lowest price, but if you add up your shopping bills regularly you’ll find PAK’nSAVE is significantly cheaper overall. Foodstuffs does lots of research to prove and back up these claims, so I’m confident in our message.”

Silk also has a biodegradable range of baby wipes which are popular with shoppers and the huge range of nappies, means customers are always able to get the best price possible. PAK’nSAVE offers its staff a 22-week training programme and for those who wish to do apprenticeships, there’s a range available. Currently we have three in-store butchers and two apprentices and three qualified bakers and two apprentices. Their fresh produce comes from multiple sources delivered daily and fresh fish is delivered six times per week. Foodstuffs owns its own fishing quota to ensure freshness and availability.

Prue Smith has been at the Teen Parent Unit in Wairarapa for 13 years, this is her eighth year as manager, and she describes the learning environment as inclusive and supportive, allowing young people under the age of 19 to not cease learning and to gain educational qualifications while being parents. A qualified teacher, Prue describes her role as rewarding and challenging rolled together. It’s a holistic service. Not only do the staff offer formal study but there’s also a pastoral component and when necessary other social agencies can be called upon. “Being pregnant is such a major event in anyone’s life and for a young person it can disrupt a formative part of their lives. We aim to make this time as productive as possible by establishing sound learning routines while fitting into individual needs.” The Unit currently has 20 pupils, including a father. Criteria is to assist those under the age of 19 but there is some discretion when a person is achieving qualifications which may be moving to tertiary study. The average stay for most students is three years. “We like our students to leave as well prepared as possible,” says Prue. The Teen Parent Unit is fully funded by

the government. She is supported by six teachers, all with specialty teaching areas such as health, visual arts, maths and English and there’s a teacher’s aide who also acts as the Unit’s van driver. Louise Kernahan heads out each morning and collects the students and children. It ensures routine for the day and helps those who may not have transport. She also returns them home at the end of the day. The purpose-built facility was opened in 2002 and sits on the grounds of Makoura College in Masterton. It consists of a large airy classroom able to be partitioned and complete with kitchen at one end where students and staff eat together. Attached to this building via a covered walkway is the Early Childhood Centre, Makoura Early Learning Centre, where students’ children are cared for. The Centre caters for 30 children and is jointly owned by Paulette Hall, Colette Clarkson and Janeen Bruce. It also takes in children from the community. The unit and the centre operate as separate businesses, Teen Parent Unit staff being employed by the Makoura College board. In the words of one student: “My success should not be bestowed on to me alone, as it was not individual success but success as a collective.”
