In addition to hanging abstract paintings on the walls of this corporate office, designer Elena Starr set up the conference room TV monitor to display art rather than a blank screen. Starr chose the sculptures of figures ascending ladders to represent the father-son executive team of MJ Hotels’ corporate office in Danbury, Connecticut.

A corporate office may not sound like the ideal commission for an interior designer, but when Elena Starr of Safavieh got the chance to reimagine the offices of Meyer Jabara Hotels, an awardwinning hospitality company operating in 14 states, she saw it as a plum assignment. Based in Danbury, Connecticut, MJ Hotels, as it’s known for short, is a 45-year-old business with a diverse hotel portfolio that ranges from boutiques to large convention-style settings. The shared vision is to provide exceptional destination experiences, and senior leadership wanted that vision embodied in its workspace. “In other words,” explains Starr, “the office suite needed to exude hospitality. It had to be fresh, inviting and pulsing with positive energy.” Color and artwork played a big role in achieving these results. “I used yellows and blues to make the space happy and bright,” says Starr, “and the combination generates a lot of compliments.” She hung large, abstract paintings in these colors to create the feeling of a gallery. Most of the furniture was custom designed and sourced through Safavieh. For example, the marble-topped coffee table in the reception area was custom made in Italy by Stone International, and the conference table, chairs and media cabinet were custom made in Canada by Dinec. After the project was completed, Starr received a phone call from the president, thanking her for the extremely comfortable conference chairs: An eight-hour meeting in these chairs was a breeze! Accessories speak to Starr’s attention to detail. Tabletop sculptures of two figures ascending ladders, she says, represent father and son, the second and third generations of management. Together they’re taking the company to a higher level, and this being a hospitality business, they’re doing it, in part, through the power of great design.

Bright yellow creates energy and elevates the mood of the headquarters lobby, above. The coffee table, designed by Elena Starr and sourced through Safavieh, was custom made in Italy by Stone International. Opposite, bold artwork in strong colors creates the feel of a gallery in a seating area outside the president’s office.

A custom hand-painted feature wall by Phillip Bland is a standout focal point of this living room. Lots of luxe lounge seating was added for parties and entertaining with friends, all pointed toward the crystal “fire and ice” gas fireplace. When you’re an accomplished interior designer, one project often leads to another. That was the case for Beth Krupa, principal of Beth Krupa Interiors of Greenwich, Connecticut, whose home renovation for one satisfied client led to a referral to the client’s mother. “Her mother already had homes in Manhattan and Saratoga Springs, New York, where she races and rescues thoroughbred race horses,” explains Krupa. “This home, her third, was a pandemic purchase, made so she could be close to her daughter, son-in-law and new grandbaby.” Krupa’s new canvas was a vintage 1980s townhome just off the Post Road in Westport. It With its long banquette seating and swiveling tub chairs, the dining room has the feeling of a private lounge. In the custom artwork by photographer Wink Gaines, the jockey silks were custom-colored to match the owner’s own racehorse silks.

In the dining room, this home’s main party space, a bar-like console with stools provides extra seating. The compact kitchen (opposite top) is outfitted with a high-top table and banquette seating, complete with a brass bar rail, enticing guests to linger. An upstairs bedroom (opposite bottom) makes great use of space with a cocoon-like sleeping nook. Note how designer Beth Krupa extended the custom upholstered headboard wall to wall.

was a “builder special” in its day, with sloping ceilings, awkward soffits and loft-like bedrooms— not exactly an architectural masterpiece. But space is space, and under Krupa’s skillful hand, the small home was transformed into a jewel box. “The dining room design was very much inspired by the homeowner’s equine passions and desire to entertain,” says Krupa, who made the room into a lounge-like party space, furnished with a long custom banquette, tub chairs and a bar-like console with stools as extra seating. Wink Gaines, the wildlife photographer, captures the essence of the room with a high-energy racehorse image printed in HD on aluminum metal. The jockey silks of the winning horse in the artwork were custom colored to match the owner’s own racehorse silks, making this print not only personal, but also one-of-a-kind. Even the compact kitchen was fashioned into an enticing room for lingering with friends, with a high-top table, a comfy banquette anchored by a brass bar rail and stylish patinated brass stools. The inspiration for the main bedroom came from the owner’s desire to feel like she was on a vacation-like retreat when she entered the room after a long day. “To create that vibe,” explains Krupa, “we layered coconut shell panels onto the 16-foot-high pitched ceiling, adding instant warmth, and used her favorite muted color palette to create a soothing and relaxing ambience.” Dual acrylic custom upholstered accent benches at the footboard create extra seating, while allowing light to pass through, producing a warm and airy effect. A careful mix of textiles and textures softens the space and adds just the right feminine touch.

A symmetrical arrangement of club chairs and throws with a bold Greek key pattern creates the feel of vacation-like retreat in the main bedroom. Prewar apartments in so-called “good buildings” on Manhattan’s Upper East Side are prized by buyers, but they rarely come in move-in condition. The apartment you see here harbored a riot of styles, says interior designer Lorraine Gordon, complete with mid-20th century plywood cabinets and flower power wallpaper from the 1970s. “The only real choice was to gut the space and start over.” Her client is a collector of antique Persian rugs, most of which predate the building by decades or even a century. But they’re the kind of rugs that play well in a contemporary setting, and that’s what the collector wanted—a fresh look that could be described as both elegant and up to date. Virtually every surface was, well, resurfaced. Except for a carved fire surround and traditional radiator covers, the millwork was replaced with pareddown transitional moldings. Custom display cabinets flanking the fireplace are almost devoid of ornamentation. A mansion-size carpet in muted blue and gold tones provides the decorative foundation for the living room. To complement the antique, Gordon selected a subtle, hand-painted wallpaper and applied it to a single long wall. Large-scale upholstered pieces—sofas, wing chairs and a club chair—are free of pattern so as not to compete.

In the dining room, above, the rug is contemporary, and so is the furniture. Graceful chairs with sloping backrests and tapering, out-curved legs are an update of the ancient klismos style. The designer played out a similar scheme in the media room, where a deep blue antique rug takes pride of place. All other pattern is banished. The walls are muted, as are the fabrics, both dark and light, on the sofa and chairs. A monumental photograph of a horse lends a bold, graphic touch. Virtually monochromatic, the portrait does not detract from the grandeur of the Persian rug. The dining room tells its own story. Here the rug is contemporary, and so is the furniture. Graceful dining chairs, an update of the ancient klismos style, have sloping backrests and tapering, out-curved legs. A long, lacquered credenza is topped by a simple Carrara marble slab. Above it hangs a large abstract painting, bolder and more brooding than the art in the other rooms. In keeping with the transitional aesthetic—and the goal of letting the fine handmade rugs shine—Gordon was ever-so-slightly spare with furnishings. That’s especially true in the grand-scaled entrance hall, where a console topped with lamps and a mirror suffice to define the gallery-like space. This elegant apartment is less about what’s on the walls than what’s on the floors.

Paramus, New Jersey, is famous as a shopping destination: For half a century, the town has boasted four full-size malls. But there’s a lesser known side of Paramus, established neighborhoods of winding, tree-lined streets of well-kept homes. The house you see here is new construction finished at an awkward time— March 2020, just as the nation went into pandemic lockdown. As soon as “non-essential” businesses reopened, the homeowner, a single wealth manager with a grown son in the military, met with Larry O’Neil, an interior designer based at Safavieh’s Livingston, New Jersey, flagship showroom. The two hit it off immediately. “Whenever I start up with a new client,” says O’Neil, “I devote a large part of our initial time discovering what outcome the client wants. This is a fun process unto itself. We compare and contrast different products. We explore mixing styles to create the client’s own unique look. I don’t do cookie-cutter interiors!” In this case the client pictured contemporary décor with classic underpinnings. This vision called for new, transitional furniture, with a few traditional pieces from the client’s collection worked into the mix. “He understood what fine furniture is all about and also appreciated owning pieces of high value,” notes O’Neil. “That made the process relatively easy, as he trusted that my aesthetic decisions would meet his expectations.” His trust was well placed. “Working together,” says O’Neil, “we went from near-empty space to a home we’re both proud of.”

The homeowner, a single wealth manager with a grown son in the military, wanted his new house to have contemporary décor with classic underpinnings. To realize that vision, O’Neil selected sleek new transitional furniture from Safavieh, while incorporating a few traditional pieces, including the center hall table, from his client’s collection. The elegant chandeliers—each different and all contemporary—are also from Safavieh.

Palmetto Bluff, South Carolina, is known for its Low Country architecture. The equestrian estate you see here fits right in, but with a Northern twist. There’s a Hamptons vibe that comes from the homeowners’ previous experience living in Amagansett, New York. “I call it Low Country meets Coastal,” says Jimeale Hede, who with her husband created this property on the May River from scratch. Two-and-a-half years in the making, it’s now their primary home. Jimeale is a dressage rider, as are the couple’s two young daughters, and the farm is home to eight horses. As is often the case with family farms, the resident species—some captive, some wild—have multiplied; the horses have been joined by dogs, cats, goldfish, a gecko, an 11-foot

alligator that comes and goes from the pond, and a flock of boisterous crows. The house reflects Jimeale’s vision, start to finish. An open plan unites living room, dining area and kitchen—the nerve center of family life—in a single large space. Adjacent to this is an enormous screened porch, “where we eat almost all our meals,” says Jimeale, “as soon as the weather warms up.” The porch is a bridge between the indoors and the swimming pool and patio. Together, these spaces form a complete setting for relaxed family living and entertaining. Foresight informed the architecture: “We had the idea that we would live entirely on the ground floor after the kids move out,” she says, although

that shift remains more than a decade in the future. “We have a primary bedroom suite, an office—the works—on the first floor.” When it came to furnishing the home, Jimeale had a brief trial with a local decorator. “She wanted to spec wrought iron light fixtures, and I knew right away that we did not see eye to eye!” So Jimeale became her own head designer and began working closely with Safavieh. “Virtually all of our furnishings came from Safavieh. There’s nothing more convenient,” she explains. She used soft blues extensively—on the walls, the rugs and upholstered pieces—along with beachy whites. Reflecting the abundant natural light, these shades proved key to achieving the Coastal look. It’s a comfortable décor that suits the whole family.

With a fireplace for warmth and ceiling fans for cooling, the screened porch is where the family eats most of its meals in all but the coldest months. Seen at the golden hour, below, the front façade of the home is redolent of Southern hospitality.

For New Jerseyans who love New York City, a prized place to live is one of the dozen towns that stretch south along the Hudson River from the George Washington Bridge to the Bayonne Bridge. This 19-mile strip is variously known as the Gold Coast, the Hudson Waterfront, or the “sixth borough.” In the center of the Gold Coast lies North Bergen, which has the distinction of being the second hilliest municipality in the United States, after San Francisco. Here, notched into the cliffside of the Hudson Palisades, you’ll find the Solaia, a boutique residential tower that borrows as much or more from the Northern California lifestyle as from the Big Apple. Solaia is packed with amenities focused on holistic living. There’s “The Sanctuary,” a three-story wellness center with such spa-like treats as a halotherapy Himalayan salt lounge. A residents’ lounge features billiards and a fireplace. The cliffside roof deck has an outdoor kitchen and firepit and, of course, amazing views of the Manhattan skyline. One needn’t ascend to the roof to take in the views. The residences here are all about the skyline vista and streaming natural light. To showcase these special features, the developers called on Safavieh to furnish a model apartment. Sheila Broderson, lead designer in Safavieh’s flagship showroom in Livingston, New Jersey, handled the project. She used contemporary pieces, some with organic forms, such as the one-of-a-kind coffee table made from a live-edge slab of sustainably harvested wood. “I kept things light, with plenty of glass and burnished metals,” she explains, “and added mirrors to multiply the views.” “Remarkably,” she adds, “the project was completed on the developers’ rigorous timetable of two weeks, start to finish.” That kind of speed is a benefit of working with Safavieh, which has an extensive in-stock program. Enhanced by the backdrop of river, city and sky, the furnished result at Solaia speaks for itself.

Safavieh’s Sheila Broderson kept the décor light and contemporary, using lots of mirrors, glass and burnished metals. In one of the bedrooms, below, the designer placed the bed near the window to take advantage of the layered view. That view includes, from the foreground looking out, the hilly town of North Bergen, the Hudson River, Manhattan’s Riverside Park, the buildings of the Upper West Side and an endless sky.

Within the confines of a blackand-white palette, Marshall didn’t hesitate to mix bold patterns in upholstery fabrics and rugs. While the furniture is all new, he integrated original Art Deco mirrors and light fixtures that hark back to the luxury and modernity of early 20th century New York. A few color accents are provided by a Calder lithograph, the spine of an art book and a spray of fresh tulips.

For a Manhattan couple that loves the arts, moving to 3 Lincoln Plaza had a dual attraction: The building is integrated with the performance halls of Lincoln Center, to the extent that the quickest way to reach the music is by an escalator in the apartment building’s lobby. The residential tower is also the neighborhood’s tallest in which one can buy, not just rent, an apartment. When one became available on the 47th floor, the couple snapped it up. Then they called Ron Marshall, the Connecticut-based designer who had already completed a number of homes for the family. “The apartment was nondescript and aging,” explains Marshall. “So we decided it would be a gut job.” One of his master strokes was to take down a bedroom wall, creating a sweeping living space that took full advantage of the continuous wall of windows. As with any custom construction project, adjustments were made along the way. “The husband asked me to redesign the kitchen island with an end overhang so that he could see the Hudson River while eating,” he says. That’s now considered “one of the best seats in the house,” although frankly, there are no bad seats. Marshall’s next feat was to furnish the home with a unified sense of place.

He did that, in part, by evoking Art Deco—and not by adding replicas, but by acquiring original mirrors, sconces, table lamps and statuary from the 1920s and ’30s. These provide a stylistic link to the luxury and modernity of early 20th century New York. The furniture, which is from Safavieh, is new and carefully selected to echo a bygone era without seeming antique. Examples include chrome bookend consoles in the foyer, placed together to form one long piece that looks like a kinetic sculpture in its own right, and a bedroom set from Safavieh’s Phantom Collection by Selva of Italy. Marshall used a restrained palette of black-and-white, silvers and grays. When it came to choosing fabrics and rugs, he didn’t shrink from pattern. Bold geometrics, updated animal prints and stripes coexist in unexpected harmony. These patterns imbue the living space with a subtle rhythm and fairly pulse with energy, much like the performance spaces of Lincoln Center, which are just an elevator and escalator ride away.

Serendipity is often the basis for great home design projects. When a New Jersey homeowner telephoned Safavieh’s Stamford, Connecticut, flagship showroom to ask about the company’s free design service, she found herself speaking to the always enthusiastic Fernand Roderick, one of Safavieh’s staff interior designers. “We had instant rapport,” says Roderick, “and she soon came to see me in the store.” The home she needed help with wasn’t in New Jersey. It was a second home that she and her husband were renovating in Delray Beach, Florida. They were in the midst of a total transformation, from Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, complete with red tile roof, to a sleek, open-plan modern design, more typical of South Florida today. “She flew me down to Florida one morning,” recalls Roderick, “so I could measure the spaces and we could begin dreaming about the interior transformation. I had to weave through machinery and slabs of sheetrock, but the mission was accomplished by midafternoon, and I was on a same-day flight back north.” The next step was a work session with the homeowner in Safavieh’s Stamford showroom. “Some items we chose off the showroom floor, and others we ordered from pictures we viewed on the internet of brands that Safavieh carries,” notes Roderick. “It was a successful collaboration based on trust. Stylistically speaking, she and her husband did a total 180! And they were totally pleased with the personalized result.”

Thom Filicia has been a household name since his first turn on “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.” That was way back in 2003, if you can believe it. Since then he has become a topflight designer in worldwide demand for residential as well as hospitality projects, and he has designed product collections in many categories, from lighting to rugs. process—the site, the architecture, the client’s taste and his or her lifestyle. Part of his design credo is to make spaces appear both timely and timeless—an ability he learned from an early, major influence, Albert Hadley. “He was a designer’s designer,” recalls Filicia, “a modernist who was rooted in tradition. From him I Iearned how to cool down a classic interior by editing the elements, so that it’s clean and concise. By the same token, I like to warm up a modern interior by layering rich materials.” Layered materiality can be seen in all of the rooms on these pages, and it’s a key, he says, to making a home feel warm and inviting. Has his aesthetic changed over time? “I don’t think so,” he says. “My aesthetic has always been about simplicity of design and clarity of style. I like interiors that are easy, livable, fun and laid-back while also being sophisticated—the same qualities you’d want in a best friend. That’s always been consistent. What’s changed comes from my desire to be timely—connected to this moment. Even in a historic home, I want the interiors to feel up to date. What’s timely is always evolving, so my designs are always evolving. But timeliness is just one layer.” He also believes in the principle of accretion: A good room never looks “off-the-rack.” Rather, he says, “Even if it’s created from a blank slate, a room should look like it evolved over time.” This richly layered home library seems to generate its own electricity, thanks in part to the high-sheen blue lacquered walls and the acid yellow of the artwork and book bindings. An upholstered chair with a white metal frame pays homage to Diego Giacometti. The circular coffee table is reminiscent of an on-off button, and here the power is always “on.”

Thom, what do you mean by Modern Americana? From the very start, American furniture represented a simplification of European forms. In the colonial period, English forms dominated, but the colonists expressed these designs in a pared-down, more humble way. I’ve always loved the idea of simplification of form, which to me is very modern. So, does your collection derive from historical designs? There are historical influences and many global design influences, but I’ve simplified them, I hope, to the point that they don’t appear derivative. I intend for the pieces just to be relaxed, grounded and approachable, which I see as essentially American qualities. That’s what I mean by Modern Americana. Do you have any favorite pieces in the Vanguard Collection? My favorites evolve, but I’m always partial to two of the pieces that have been part of the collection from day

one—the Copake Eagle console and the Strathmore console. The Copake Eagle is a Warholian take on a formal Federal design that you’d find, say, in the White House. It’s available in a slew of colors. With the Strathmore console, I borrowed a repeating, circular motif from the frieze of the cornice of the dining room in a house where I grew up. It’s a bold architectural form taken from millwork and hugely scaled up into a modern piece of furniture. How versatile are these pieces? Everything in the collection is versatile by design because it’s all modern, clean and layered in its materiality— in terms of pairing warm, complementary woods and metals, leathers and textiles, ceramics and so forth. These pieces can make a suburban Georgian home built in the 1920s feel fresh and modern, and they can also make an urban glass box feel comfortable and inviting. I’ve concentrated on making every element of the collection both timely and timeless.

IT’S NO YOLK

Call it the unthinkable, drinkable egg. But it’s true—the white of this morning staple can give your evening cocktail a smooth, frothy finish. TEXT BY Darius Amos Unless you’ve got a championship bout coming up, nobody’s telling you to drink five whole eggs in the morning à la Rocky Balboa. But protein-rich, cholesterol-free egg whites are actually gaining favor as an ingredient with bartending heavyweights and at-home mixologists alike. The practice of using raw chicken eggs in beverages is anything but new. Eggladen drinks date back to the Middle Ages, when peasants mixed eggs with liquor and spices. In the U.S., adding eggs to shaken cocktails became popular in the early 1900s, as pre-Prohibition bartenders inserted them for extra body in their Manhattans and old-fashioneds. Today, they’re back in taverns from Brooklyn to Budapest, filling the glasses of discerning drinkers with something eggs-tra. So, why does this idea go over easy? Egg whites are essentially flavorless and, when shaken, form a creamy foam. In other words, they add a velvety texture while preserving the taste of the liquor and your cocktail’s other ingredients. Using a whole egg would create a thick consistency (think eggnog), so unless you want a dense drink that tastes like scrambled eggs, leave out the yolk. Another pro tip: Employ a dry shake when mixing ingredients, then add ice. That will ensure that the egg white incorporates with the other ingredients and creates an irresistible foamy head. Egging you on, we’ve selected five triedand-true cocktails to try. Each one works well with the potent protein you normally poach or fry. Get crackin’!

n 2 oz. pisco n 1 oz. fresh lime juice n 1 egg white n ½ oz. simple syrup n Angostura bitters, for garnish

n 1½ oz. absinthe n ¼ oz. simple syrup n 3 oz. half-and-half n 1 dash of orange flower water n 1 egg white n ¼ oz. white crème de menthe

Add all ingredients into a shaker and dryshake. Strain into a chilled rocks glass over fresh ice. Garnish with three drops of the bitters. Using a straw, swirl the bitters into a simple design.

In a cocktail shaker, combine all of the ingredients and shake for 10 seconds. Strain into an ice-filled highball glass.

n 1½ oz. amaretto n ¾ oz. cask-proof bourbon n 1 oz. fresh lemon juice n 1 tsp. simple syrup n ½ oz. egg white, beaten n 1 orange slice, for garnish n 1–2 maraschino cherries, for garnish

n 1 oz. vodka n ½ oz. crème de pêche n ½ oz. fresh lemon juice n 1 tsp. egg white n 2 oz. Champagne n lemon peel, for garnish

Add all ingredients into a shaker and dryshake. Add ice and shake again until chilled. Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice. Garnish with orange and maraschino cherries.

Dry-shake vodka, crème de pêche, lemon and egg white in a cocktail shaker for about one minute. Add a few cubes of ice and shake again to chill the mixture. Pour Champagne into a flute and strain the contents of the shaker on top. Garnish with a lemon peel.

Add all the ingredients into a shaker and dry-shake. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a speared raspberry.
