Summer Smooth!

A

AUGUST IS KNOWN for many things: the back-to-school season, long summer days, and, of course, the Texas heat. It is also National Wellness Month, making it the perfect time to focus on the habits and practices that help us feel our best. In this issue, we sit down with Mueller resident and business owner Dr, Nick Chu of Parkside Family Vision. His dedication to caring for the eye health of our community is truly a calling. He shares what it means to him to have a family practice right in the neighborhood he calls home. We also meet Functional Medicine physician Dr. Taylor Stolt to learn more about her specialty and how it differs from the traditional medical experiences many of us

are accustomed to. Her insights offer a fresh perspective on healthcare and what it means to support overall wellness. In Meet Me at the Market, Carmen Gray introduces us to Wild Hearth and Home, a local business offering organic, handmade herbal remedies and nourishing whole-plant skincare products designed to help us feel our best inside and out. Of course, wellness is important at every age. Alix Newton has created a healthy and delicious after-school snack that is sure to be a hit with kids and parents alike. Staying with our younger generation, we also meet Amelia Siebert, a talented young author who has already achieved what many aspiring writers only dream of, becoming a published novelist. With grandparents right here in Mueller, Amelia spends time visiting residents at Overture and inspiring readers of all ages through her passion for storytelling. On a personal note, this August issue marks the start of our fourth-year publishing Mueller Magazine. What began as an experiment has grown into a vibrant community publication that celebrates the people, businesses, and stories that make Mueller such a special place to live. I am incredibly grateful for the support of our residents, advertisers, contributors, and readers. Thank you for being part of this journey and helping Mueller Magazine thrive.

Holistic Health Andrew Herrick and Jaren Shears provide herbal remedies for the Mueller community. BY CARMEN GRAY IF YOU’RE LOOKING for high-quality herbal remedies, stop by Wild Hearth and Home at the Texas Farmers Market at Mueller on Sunday. You’ll meet an informative couple selling an array of products curated to improve your health and protect your skin. Andrew Herrick, who graduated in 2014 from the Wildflower School of Botanical Medicine, and his partner Jaren Shears, started Wild Hearth and Home in 2020. Their focus is on providing the community with organic, handmade herbal remedies and deeply nourishing whole-plant skincare. Herrick says, “Our formulas largely use native Texas plants to increase sustainability, freshness, and efficacy. We want our customers to

experience a wealth of health because they’re receiving an herbal preparation that was lovingly tended to from seed to bottle.” Many herb companies outsource ingredients overseas, often purchasing stale plant material at a lower price point. In addition to increasing the carbon footprint, this produces deficient products that lack potency. Herrick and Shears wanted to change that model. Their products are fresh, ecologically responsible, and effective. “We want people to fall in love with the healing power of fresh herbs that are grown locally and harvested at the perfect time. So much love goes into farming, extracting, and bottling

our products so we can bring highquality herbal remedies and medicinal skincare to our community.” All plants used in Wild Hearth and Home products are organically grown in a farm plot run in collaboration with Simple Promise Farms. This ensures permaculture principles are implemented to achieve high yields while supporting local populations of birds and pollinators, which is key to both maintaining balance in nature and protecting the environment. The remedies Wild Hearth and Home formulate target specific holistic needs, such as stress support, immune and respiratory health, and balanced skincare.

BUILDING A BUSINESS Wild Hearth and Home joined the Mueller Market in 2021 to reach a wider audience with their fresh, native-plant remedies and skincare. Since joining the Texas Farmers’ Market at Mueller, they have experienced steadfast and enthusiastic support. “Not only are our customers some of the kindest people in Austin, but the staff at the market also cares deeply about uplifting the hard work of local farmers.” AUGUST 2026 |

Herrick and Shears plan to continue expanding their holistic line and have worked tirelessly to build meaningful relationships with local Austin businesses like The Herb Bar, Earth Commons, and Wheatsville. One top-selling item, Return to Self, can be found at these retailers; the formula contains several herbs that gently cleanse and detoxify the body. Another popular product during allergy season is Sinus Support, a blend that opens nasal passages and relieves congestion. As far as their skincare products go, their Daily cleanser, made with a base of rose and freshly harvested cactus hydrosols infused into African black soap, is a top seller. Rose gently tones the skin while cactus hydrates, detoxifies, and nourishes with high amounts of vitamin C. The plant ash from African black soap works to balance pH and heal dry, inflamed skin. Herrick and Shears also offer to share their unique knowledge of plants with their occasional plant walks, which you can sign up for on their website. On a recent one that took place in April, they led clients through the Southwest Greenway to discover the medicinal herbs that grow wild locally and explained how to respectfully cultivate and harvest them. Wild Hearth and Home intend to continue to expand their product lines and share the healing power of fresh, native, locally farmed plants for the long term. To request their products at a local retailer or place a wholesale order, visit wildhearthandhome.com. Carmen Gray has lived in Austin since 1992. She is a retired teacher, published author, and freelance writer.

W

Taylor Stolt of Plate and Canvas shares the value of functional medicine.

16-19 MUE_FunctionalMed_0826_final R1.indd 17

What is functional medicine and how does it differ from traditional healthcare? Functional medicine is a personalized, whole-body approach to improving your health. Instead of asking “What medication matches this symptom?” it asks “Why is this happening?” In functional medicine, we look at how systems in the body interact, including gut health, hormones,

metabolism, and the nervous system. We also use your health history, diet, and lifestyle patterns, and advanced lab testing to understand what is driving your symptoms. From there, we design a personalized plan using nutrition, lifestyle, and targeted supplementation. This restores balance and improves how the body functions as a whole, improving symptoms naturally. Traditional healthcare is great for emergency care and diagnosing AUGUST 2026 |

disease, but it’s often reactive and symptom-focused. Functional medicine is proactive. It helps you uncover what is going on in your body, so you can feel better and actually improve your long-term health. Functional medicine often focuses on “root causes.” What does that mean? Root causes are the reasons why a symptom is happening. Weight gain and low energy, for example, may stem from blood sugar instability, nutrient deficiencies, hormone imbalances, inflammation, or an overtaxed nervous system. Bloating is often caused by gut bacteria imbalances, gut inflammation, yeast overgrowth, low digestive enzyme production, or low stomach acid. Instead of covering symptoms with medications, functional medicine identifies the root causes and addresses those directly. When you correct the root causes, symptoms often improve or resolve as a natural byproduct. How does functional medicine connect lifestyle factors like nutrition, sleep, and stress to overall health? Lifestyle factors are the foundation of health. Nutrition impacts blood sugar, inflammation, and hormone production. Sleep regulates cortisol, metabolism, and recovery. Stress affects everything from digestion to detoxification to immune function. Functional medicine looks at how these inputs influence your biology on a daily basis. Small, consistent lifestyle habits can significantly shift your biology and improve how the body functions over time. What types of health concerns are most often addressed through functional medicine?

Functional medicine is commonly used for chronic symptoms that haven’t improved with other approaches, or when someone has been told “everything looks normal” but still doesn’t feel well. This can include: • Digestive issues (bloating, constipation, IBS-like symptoms) • Hormonal issues (PMS, irregular cycles, PCOS, fertility challenges, menopausal symptoms, pregnancy symptoms, postpartum symptoms) • Fatigue • Brain fog or difficulty concentrating • Mood swings • Poor sleep quality • Weight gain or difficulty losing weight • Skin conditions like acne Most people aren’t dealing with just one symptom, but a combination of symptoms that have stacked up over time. Why has functional medicine gained so much attention in communities like Mueller that are health-conscious? Mueller is home to many people who care deeply about their health, their families, and the future of Austin. There’s a strong emphasis on growth, connection, and doing things well. That mindset shows up in their healthcare, too. People are no longer satisfied with quick fixes or medications that cover their symptoms. They want to understand their body, actually improve their health, and feel their best long-term. Functional medicine is an approach that aligns beautifully with those priorities. What surprises people most when they first experience a functional medicine approach? Many people are surprised by

how thorough it is. They are used to short, frustrating doctor’s visits that leave them with more questions than answers. Functional medicine feels different right away. There’s time to actually understand what is going on, and symptoms that once felt random start to make sense. For many clients, reviewing their lab work is a huge turning point. Instead of being told everything is “normal,” they finally see what’s been driving how they feel. Some clients even get emotional in that moment. Not because something is wrong, but because for the first time they have answers and hope. Why do so many people say functional medicine helps them feel truly heard for the first time? Time and attention are built into the functional medicine process. Instead of a rushed appointment focused on one symptom, functional medicine takes the time to paint the full picture for the client. Clients are able to share their experiences, ask questions, and feel confident that their concerns are being taken seriously. They get to partner with their practitioner and be active participants in their health. That alone can be powerful, but when paired with a clear plan to move forward, it ultimately drives lasting change. Taylor Stolt is a Mueller resident and the founder of Plate and Canvas, a functional medicine practice serving clients nationwide. She and her team use advanced lab testing and a rootcause approach to create practical protocols that support natural healing. They have helped over 800 clients feel like themselves again without restrictive diets or extremes.

Nick Chu of Parkside Family Vision on his practice, family life, and his love for Mueller.

OPENING A BUSINESS in the same neighborhood where you live may seem like a dream come true. For Dr. Nick Chu of Parkside Family Vision though, it wasn’t always part of the plan. In fact, when his wife Sarah first suggested opening an eye care practice in Mueller years ago, he wasn’t convinced. “I wanted to keep business and personal life separate,” Dr. Chu admits. “I wasn’t sure I wanted to run into patients when I was out in the neighborhood.” Chu even recalls one particularly memorable moment while vacationing with his family at Disney World. They were walking to the resort pool when suddenly they heard someone yell, ‘Dr. Chu!’ It was a patient who recognized him hundreds of miles away from Austin. At the time, the idea of being recognized

everywhere felt a little overwhelming. But life has a way of changing perspectives. That shift came during the COVID-19 pandemic when Dr. Chu was furloughed from his position at a Cedar Park practice. The unexpected pause gave him something he rarely had before: time. “Being home without work for those few weeks was a gift,” he says. “It taught me how privileged I was to be able to take care of people’s eyes.” The experience helped him realize something important. Eye care wasn’t simply his job. It was his calling. So, when the perfect office space became available in the Parkside Condos building in Mueller shortly afterward, Dr. and Sarah Chu moved quickly. For their family, it felt like the right place at the right time.

A TRUE HOME The Chus have called Mueller home since 2011, raising their family while becoming deeply connected to the neighborhood. Today, Parkside Family Vision encompasses two things they care about most: family and community. In fact, those values are reflected right in the practice’s name. “The word ‘family’ has several meanings for us,” says Dr. Chu. First, Parkside Family Vision is truly familyowned and operated. While Dr. Chu cares for patients, Sarah works behind the scenes handling everything from accounting and payroll to strategic planning and business operations. “She’s my sounding board on practically everything,” he says. The practice also wouldn’t exist without the support of extended family members who helped build furniture, babysit their son, prepare meals, unpack supplies, and provide encouragement during the startup process.

But perhaps the most important meaning of “family” is how the Chus hope patients feel when they walk through the door. Their goal has always been to create a warm, welcoming environment where people feel comfortable bringing not only themselves but also their children, parents, siblings, and friends. That philosophy has resonated with Mueller families. From toddlers receiving their first eye exams to grandparents monitoring age-related vision concerns, Parkside Family Vision provides care for every stage of life. COMPREHENSIVE CARE For children, that includes comprehensive eye exams and specialized myopia management programs designed to slow the progression of nearsightedness. For adults, services range from routine vision care and contact lens fittings to

treatment for dry eye and computer vision syndrome. Seniors benefit from glaucoma testing, diabetic eye exams, cataract consultations, and monitoring for conditions such as macular degeneration. Over time, Dr Chu has honed his specialty in treating myopia. While many people think nearsightedness simply means needing stronger glasses, research has shown that rapidly progressing myopia can increase the risk of serious eye conditions later in life, including retinal detachment, glaucoma, cataracts, and myopic macular degeneration. Using treatments such as Ortho-K lenses, MiSight contact lenses, low-dose atropine drops, and Essilor Stellest glasses, the practice works to slow the progression of myopia in children before it becomes a larger problem. “We recently had a child come in whose nearsightedness progressed

22 | MUELLER 20-23 MUE_Parkside_0826_final.indd 22

7/9/26 3:15 PM

much more rapidly than expected in just one year,” Dr. Chu explains. “Because we had a baseline from the previous exam, we were able to identify it early and discuss treatment options before it worsened further.” He also recalls one young patient whose routine eye exam revealed an abnormal finding that prompted further medical evaluation. That evaluation ultimately led to the discovery of cancer. The early diagnosis allowed doctors to begin treatment quickly, making a meaningful difference in the child’s outcome. “It’s a reminder that comprehensive eye exams are about much more than checking a prescription,” Dr. Chu says. “Sometimes they provide important clues about a person’s overall health.” Stories such as this reinforce the importance of regular eye exams and early intervention. Of course, being a neighborhood practice means many of those stories don’t end when patients leave

the office. One of Dr. Chu’s favorite examples involved a family seeking myopia management care for their son. During the conversation, they realized the parents owned the dental practice that their own child visits. “It perfectly captured what we love about Mueller,” he says. “We trust them with our child’s dental health, and they trust us with their child’s vision.” Those kinds of connections happen regularly in a community where neighbors genuinely know one another. The Chus support local schools, neighborhood PTAs, the Mueller Manatees swim team, and AGE of Central Texas. They frequently see patients at parks, school events, church gatherings, and community celebrations. For Dr. Chu, these encounters no longer feel awkward. They feel meaningful. Life is busy and full when you have a thriving practice as well as a family to attend to, but when Dr. Chu is not

caring for patients, you will likely spot him on the pickleball court, enjoying one of his favorite hobbies and connecting with neighbors in a totally different setting. The Chus couldn’t be prouder of the practice that continues to grow. They recently added an in-house finishing lab that allows glasses to be crafted onsite for faster turnaround and greater quality control. They’ve also expanded with a second exam room and are preparing to introduce additional technology for glaucoma detection, macular degeneration monitoring, and advanced dry-eye treatment. Yet despite the growth, their goals and values remain unchanged. For Dr. and Sarah Chu, Parkside Family Vision is about more than eye care. It’s about serving their neighbors, supporting families, and investing in the community they proudly call home. And, in a neighborhood built on connection, that’s a beautiful vision. AUGUST 2026 |

A New Chapter

P

Take a look back at the legacy of Ridgetop Elementary School and its inspiring leader following the school’s closure. BY CARMEN GRAY

PRINCIPAL KARA SCHULTZ has spent her entire adult life at Ridgetop Elementary. She began as a bilingual teacher at the school at age 26. Over the years, she watched the school grow and evolve while also surviving several threatened closures. Through it all, both the school and Schultz remained resilient. Schultz officially became principal on May 20, 2019. Prior to that, she served as the school’s assistant principal beginning in 2012. Becoming a principal is not an easy endeavor under any circumstances. Learning the ropes and understanding how to shape a school according to its needs can be daunting, but Schultz proved she instinctively understood what Ridgetop needed. She began each school day greeting families with music and dancing at the entrance, bringing smiles and laughter to everyone who entered. Little did she know that within a year, she would unexpectedly have to guide the staff through the transition to online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020. Alongside the community, she demonstrated the resolve to persevere through the hardship. The dancing never stopped.

“Ridgetop wasn’t just a school; it felt like stepping into a children’s picture book. We happily chose the 100-yearold building filled with soul, dancing principals, and deeply invested parents over the ‘new and shiny.’ As we move to Pickle Elementary, our commitment to showing up, volunteering, and lifting up our teachers remains exactly the same. A school that feels supported thrives, and we’re ready to make sure our new home feels the love.” — Lauren Singer, former Ridgetop Elementary parent, volunteer, and fundraiser

A NEIGHBORHOOD PRESENCE Ridgetop Elementary has a long history in the neighborhood. Established in 1908, the present school building, located near Mueller at 5005 Caswell Avenue, was built and opened in 1939. The campus also carries a historical land-use restriction. An original 1917 deed specifies that the property must be used strictly for educational or residential purposes, preventing the site from being sold to private developers for commercial or dense multifamily projects. As a result, the future of the closed campus will undoubtedly be shaped by this restriction. Ridgetop also became unique as a Dual Language Campus (Spanish/ English) during the 2010 to 2011 school year. With each passing year, the program became increasingly desirable

to families beyond the surrounding neighborhood, eventually leading to a lottery system for admission. Students and faculty spoke both languages daily. Each morning began with fifth graders leading announcements and the Pledge of Allegiance in both English and Spanish. Throughout the hallways, classroom displays showcased the proud work of bilingual and biliterate students. Even when the difficult decision was made to close Ridgetop and appoint Principal Schultz to lead Pickle Elementary, she maintained a brave face and guided the community with the same positivity and resolve she had always shown. More than three-quarters of the staff will move to Pickle alongside Schultz, as will many Ridgetop families, a testament to the

trust they place in her leadership. The transition has not been without tears, sadness, or frustration for students and staff alike. Several families have faced difficult decisions about where to send their children next, depending on their individual needs. The closeknit sense of community that extends beyond the school walls was built over the years through partnerships, dedication, and hard work. Yet true to the end, Ridgetop families came together one final time to create an end-of-year “Rattlers Por Vida” celebration on the last day of school. Ridgetop’s mascot, after all, was Sneaky the Snake. Carmen Gray has lived in Austin since 1992. She is a retired teacher, published author, and freelance writer. AUGUST 2026 |

LO CAL LENS Local author Amelia Seibert walks us through her writing process, love of the craft, and what inspires her. ON A RECENT Sunday afternoon, the residents of Overture, Mueller were treated to an afternoon with Amelia Seibert, an 11-year-old published author. She was invited to speak about her book, “The Mist Rising,” since her grandparents are residents of Overture. Afterwards, we spoke with Amelia about her love of reading and how she was able to get her book published. You are so accomplished at such a young age! How did you become interested in writing? When I was little, I loved drawing and putting together little picture books. I made books almost daily, so I guess starting at such a young age gave me a good foundation for writing. What was your inspiration for “The Mist Rising?” When I was around seven, I was really interested in creepy stories and scaring people. To this day, I am strongest in writing spooky fiction stories, so I decided I would have the best chance of winning the contest I entered if I wrote something along those lines. How did the opportunity to get “The Mist Rising” published come about? I entered a contest organized by a writing program called Leap For Literacy Share Your Story. I won the contest, so I got my book professionally illustrated and published! I decided I wanted to enter the contest when “Stan The Man,” the founder of the organization, came to present at my school. Between school, friends, and everything else, how do you find time to write? I am very busy, but I try not to schedule too much on weekends, so those days are usually a good time for me to sit down and write a good story. I also like to practice my writing skills at school in my free time.

Writing a book is not always easy. What was the hardest thing for you about bringing your story to life? The whole process was pretty hard at times, but I think the hardest part was the editing. I edited my story after school every day for months, until I was sick of reading my own story so many times. What is your favorite book that you have read? I have read so many good books, I don’t think I could choose just one. I like books in the fantasy, mystery, and fiction genres such as “Harry Potter” and “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” series. I also like other kinds of books like “Anne of Green Gables” and the “Little House” books. Really, any award-winning book like the Bluebonnet or Lone Star books are my favorite. Tell me about your experience at the Overture. Why did you want to present

there and what was your favorite part of the day? My grandparents are residents at Overture, Mueller. Overture invited me to be a part of their Lifestyle Event because they believe grandkids are important. I thought it was so fun to give my book to so many grandparents who wanted to share it with their grandkids. It was really fulfilling to see their eyes light up when I told them I got my book published. I hope my book inspires children of all ages to write books of their own If you are interested in “The Mist Rising,” it is now available for purchase on Amazon. Amelia Seibert is an 11-year-old book lover. (Both reading and writing them!) When she’s not writing, Amelia likes to dance, read, and draw, among many other things. She also enjoys hanging out with her grandparents at the Overturn, Mueller. She hopes you enjoy her book! AUGUST 2026 |

PERSPECTIVES

Hello, the house . . . BY DORA HERNANDEZ

A cozy winter’s evening, a young girl sits in a warm kitchen. Mama is making tortillas patiently listening to the girl tell her of her school day. In the living room, the eldest son is doing his university homework. A second son is watching television and a third son is happily listening to records using headphones. Father is practicing his trumpet in a nearby room, while the fourth son practices his drums in the far back room of the house. Life is happening in the warm house— happy words, laughter and music fill every corner. Over time the sons and girl moved on, still coming to the house for family gatherings. The years slipped away and father and mother are no more. Now the house sits silent and empty, but 76 years of warm memories made in every corner remain. Goodbye, the house.

Thoughts I’ve had after one of my younger brothers died January 10. He lived in the house my parents bought in 1950. Until his death, it was our family’s gathering place. Now the house is on the market, but the memories made there will never fade.
