Here’s To Your Health
Staying healthy seems to have become complicated. Faces have changed at respected national institutions dealing with health, and sometimes messages too. And whichever side of the national shouting match you’re on, you’re apt to fear that there’s more to fear nowadays.
That’s why nothing could be timelier than this Health & Wellness Issue of MORRIS & ESSEX. Medicine does know some basic things about taking care of yourself to help assure not only a longer, but also a richer life. Think how lucky you are to be living in 2026, and when American Heart Month, February, means not the symbolic shape Cupid aims at, but the real-life organ keeps us going. So in “Listen To Your Heart” on page 12, we get advice from a local cardiologist about the tricky task of assessing symptoms.

Rockaway’s Kiersten Rock-Torcivia, 20, listened to her ticker after she was diagnosed with a rare cardiac disease. Following surgeries, medication and lifesaving treatment, she wanted to help others facing similar challenges—so she started a nonprofit to support kids with heart disease. Read all about Rock-Torcivia on page 8.
Staying in shape is essential to maintaining a happy and healthy heart. But what happens when time or the lack of space for equipment gets in the way of your fitness goals? Our story on page 14 provides easy-to-follow tips to get your muscles pumping without pumping iron.
Creating harmony at home does wonders for our well-being too, and that’s what a Chester couple sought for their new-construction ranch. Interior designer Jennifer Pacca combined both masculine and feminine effects to satisfy both husband and wife. See the finished project on page 16.
The whole point of staying well is to enjoy life, and enjoyment is our wish for your year. Visit a winter day trip (page 26), savor scrumptious chicken cordon bleu and Italian stuffed braciole (page 28) or consume perfectly seared salmon at Montclair’s Brick Lane (page 58). In many ways (if you don’t overdo), enjoyment itself is good for you.
To your good health—and good times—for the rest of the year!

HONORING BLACK HISTORY
Our country turns 250 in 2026, and this year also marks what amounts to the centennial of Black History Month. (The month was officially recognized 50 years ago by President Gerald Ford, expanding on Negro History Week, which had been introduced by African American historian Carter G. Woodson in 1926, close to the February birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.) Groups nationwide will recognize Black History Month—including here in Morris and Essex:
• The Maplewood Division of Arts and Culture will host events celebrating the Black community throughout February, including an exhibit showcasing the art of Onnie Strother that opened on the first, a special film screening of Sinners and its Wild Ride through Black History (Feb. 19) and interACT Theatre’s production of A Raisin in the Sun (Feb. 13–28). More information: maplewoodartsandculture.org
• On Feb. 21, the Montclair History Center will open the Crane House for an “Eyewitness to Black History” Guided House Tour. This exhibit focuses on firsthand accounts and primary source documents of both pivotal and everyday moments in Black history, including 1800s newspapers, census data, personal letters, oral histories and mid-century Jet and Ebony magazines. More information: montclairhistory.org
• At the Mayo Performing Arts Center in Morristown, catch a Feb. 13 presentation by Cirque Kalabante, a circus that showcases the beauty and artistry of African culture. Inspired by daily life in Guinea, it will present young acrobats executing gravity-defying moves to the contemporary sounds of live afro-jazz and percussion. More information: mayoarts.org
• The Newark Museum of Art always celebrates Black History Month in style, and this year is no different. Stop by for special family Saturdays, musical performances, artist talks and after-hours celebrations. You can also see the ongoing exhibition Liberty & Legacy—which celebrates the arts and legacy of the Black community in New Jersey.

GOTTA DANCE
Montclair’s own Kathy Costa and her DanceWorks Studios stepped into the Hollywood spotlight with an appearance in the star-studded film The Housemaid, which hit theaters nationwide in December. Costa, a longtime dance educator and artistic director, appears in the movie as a dance teacher, and the actual DanceWorks studio serves as a setting, a fun nod to our local arts scene. The psychological thriller stars Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried and was partly filmed right here in New Jersey, including scenes shot in Montclair.

KEEP ON TRUCKIN’
Yes, it’s winter, but we’re already thinking about foodtruck season. That’s because Belleville is planning first-ever food-truck park, set to open this spring at 128 Washington Ave. Designed to spotlight local mobile chefs and food entrepreneurs, the park will host two rotating food trucks each month with a fresh lineup of eats all season long—from fusion tacos to artisanal desserts—so there’ll always be something new to try. But there’s more: The walkable, outdoor hangout also will have picnic tables, string lights, games such as cornhole and free public Wi-Fi. “We are transforming the space into something we think residents and families will find a fun experience,” says Belleville Mayor Michael Melham. “And the food will be delicious too.”

FRIENDS & NEIGHBORS
It’s From The Heart
Kiersten Rock-Torcivia dreamed of being an Olympic figure skater, but fate had other plans. Now her dream is to help other kids with the kind of illness that could have taken her life.
Six years ago, Kiersten Rock-Torcivia of Rockaway, 14, aspired to be on the U.S. Olympic synchronized figure skating team. She’d been training since early childhood and had the medals to prove that her dedication was paying off. Then, while practicing at Morris Township’s Mennen Sports Arena, she had a cardiac episode on the ice.
After a year of tests, surgeries and doctor visits, Rock-Torcivia was diagnosed with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC), a rare genetic heart disease that causes both arrhythmia and heart-tissue inflammation and can lead to cardiac death. Surgeries, medication and treatment saved her life. They couldn’t save her skating career.
In response, Rock-Torcivia founded Heartfelt Harmonies, a nonprofit that helps other kids with heart disease. She donates “music therapy kits” for children in hospitals and lifesaving automated external defibrillator (AED) devices to families who can’t afford them.
Now 20, she attends Boston College and studies nursing.

Tell us about that first episode. I was out on the ice practicing, and suddenly everything started feeling weird. My heart was racing. I couldn’t see right. We were right by Morristown Hospital and rushed there. My heart was going something like 240 beats per minute. That’s at risk for cardiac arrest. Everyone was so confused—we didn’t know why it was happening. Then my heart rate started coming down on its own so I was discharged, told to keep activity to a minimum and given an appointment with a specialist. Then what?
We went to New York Presbyterian. I went in for an operation—and went into cardiac arrest on the table. When I came out of surgery, the doctors told me the problem was a lot more complicated than they’d thought. Ten days later, the COVID shutdown hit.
What timing!
I know! We kept sending my files to doctors. Eventually, I got the ARVC diagnosis. I had two more heart surgeries. One of them implanted a defibrillator in my chest. And I was never able to skate again. Not competitively. What was that like?
Hard. Now that I wasn’t practicing with the team I’d skated with, I lost contact with friends. I’d always imagined myself skating in college and on a nationallevel team—now that was off the table. For a while, it was hard even to watch other people skate. It was too much. I needed something to fill that gap. That’s where Heartfelt Harmonies comes in?
Yes. After my first surgery, I had free time and wanted to do something to help people in situations similar to mine. At first, I created “music therapy kits” for hospitals. I’ve donated over 3,000 to over 20 pediatric hospitals. The kits are earbuds and access to a Spotify playlist I made. I always felt better when I had music in the
hospital to drown out all the noises and help me calm down—but when you’re running to the hospital in an emergency, you don’t think to grab your AirPods. What’s on the playlists?
Songs that are calming and relaxing. My favorite is “Strawberry Swing” by Coldplay. How did it grow from there?
I wanted to donate AEDs as well. We’ve donated 37 so far, which costs around $50,000.
Something that sticks with you?
A few months ago, I was coming home from studying abroad in Portugal, and a woman collapsed in the airport. Someone who happened to be a nurse checked for a pulse and didn’t find one. I knew what to do—I was able to go get the AED, and the nurse and I used it and did CPR until the paramedics showed up. I don’t know what happened to that woman, but the idea that my training was tested in a real situation and I was able to keep calm and help someone—that means a lot.
Where do you see yourself in the future? I want to be a nurse practitioner. Some kind of pediatrics, maybe cardiology. The nurses all made a big difference when I was sick, and I want to give that back.
Are you watching the Olympics this year?
Yes! I was just texting in my group chat about setting up a watch party at my place.
Something you wish people knew?
How to do CPR and use an AED. If you can’t get formally trained and certified, at least familiarize yourself with how they work. It really can save lives.
A message to young people?
Heart conditions don’t just happen to older people. There were times before that massive attack when I didn’t feel right on the ice. I didn’t say anything because the sport is so competitive, and I wanted to keep up. If you think something is wrong, go sit down. Take a break. What your coach thinks about you isn’t as serious as your life or your heart.

Listen To Your Heart
KNOW THE SIGNS OF CARDIAC TROUBLE—INCLUDING SUBTLE ONES THAT CAN MIMIC MORE INNOCENT CONDITIONS.
“The most typical symptom of a heart attack,” says Bruce Haik, M.D., “is a crushing chest pain, like an elephant sitting on your chest. It travels down your left arm. Then you see profuse sweating, usually enough to soak through the shirt.”
That warning can’t be repeated too often. After all, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, across genders and ethnic groups, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It’s responsible for one in every three deaths.
But sometimes heart attacks don’t follow the rules. Sometimes they present with symptoms that aren’t classic. As Dr. Haik, an interventional cardiologist who is both chief of the Division of Cardiology and director of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, explains, certain populations are more apt to show such non-classic symptoms—“particularly women, more elderly populations and patients with diabetes.
“There’s more to this disease than chest pain,” the doctor says. “And you can’t rely on only chest pain to identify when there’s a problem.”
Less common heart-attack signs
First, Dr. Haik cites acute abdominal discomfort as one such symptom. “It’s tough, because everyone gets indigestion and heartburn sometimes. People will write this off to something they ate.” But there are two warning signs that it could be cardiacrelated. First, if the symptoms are very severe, unusual and lacking apparent cause: If you aren’t getting over a bug and you have no history of this kind of reaction to food, pay attention. “Second, think about how you feel when the pain passes,” the doctor says. “Do you feel normal, or completely depleted? If it’s the second, it’s more likely related to your heart.” And if these gastrointestinal symptoms are combined with chest pain, seek medical help right away.
“Something you need to understand about these atypical symptoms is that the heart itself has no pain
receptors,” says Dr. Haik. When you’re having a cardiac problem, you feel “referred pain” because of the neuropathways that are shared among the heart, the face, the abdomen and the back. “So some patients—particularly women, the elderly and people with diabetes—don’t feel discomfort in the chest. Instead, they may say, ‘My teeth hurt, I was thinking about making a dentist appointment. I’m having bad jaw pain, or ear pain.’”
Shortness of breath is another possible heartattack sign that can be difficult to assess. But Dr. Haik says it’s a symptom he wishes people paid more attention to. “We all get short of breath,” he says. “But you need to pay attention to what’s precipitating it, and if it’s different from how you normally feel. If you’re suddenly struggling while doing something that’s normally easy for you, that’s noteworthy.”
Always these symptoms are a concern when they are sudden-onset or very unusual to you. Often, people who experience these symptoms, particularly women, will also suffer profound, unusual fatigue (fatigue that has no apparent cause and that is severe enough to disrupt daily life) in the two weeks leading up to the event. “If a woman, someone older or someone with diabetes is complaining of strange fatigue, shortness of breath and upper-body pain, get tests done immediately,” says Dr. Haik. “Don’t write it off.”
bend over,” says the doctor. “Bending over puts pressure on the right side of your heart and, if the pressure is already high, it triggers that symptom.”
Also pay attention to unexplained swelling, particularly in the legs. “If your slacks are tighter than usual, that could be an issue of fluid retention. When your heart isn’t pumping correctly, all that fluid backs up into your legs and your abdomen.”
Tips for the ticker

Bruce Haik, M.D., Interventional cardiologist, Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center
Even better than watching vigilantly for signs of illness, of course, is staying heart healthy in the first place. Advice on maintaining cardiac health has stayed consistent over the years for a reason: The data keep backing it up. A healthy diet high in vegetables and lean meats and low in sugar and processed carbs, consistent physical activity and the avoidance of smoking (including secondhand exposure, e-cigarettes and vapes) are all essential, as is managing your weight, blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol. Maintaining healthy sleep habits is also essential—the CDC recommends at least seven hours a night for adults.
“It’s all about moderation,” says Dr. Haik. “You don’t need to do Pilates every day or never have ice cream. But you do need to stay active and keep a balanced diet.”

If you think you’re having a heart attack, every second counts—call 911 and get to an emergency room as soon as possible.
Other than a heart attack, often-discussed indications and symptoms of heart disease include a pounding or racing heart (heart palpitations, in some cases known as tachycardia), increased exercise intolerance and dizziness or fainting spells. Less common signs you should get your heart evaluated? “If you get short of breath when you bend over to tie your shoes, and only when you
One aspect of proactive heart health is too often neglected, the doctor says. “You must manage your stress,” he explains. “Stress isn’t one of those major risk factors of heart disease, but it’s a serious secondary trigger. Your blood pressure goes up, your adrenaline goes up, your heart rate increases. It’s bad for your body and your heart.”
The doctor concludes with one final caution: “If you think something is off, that’s important. Err on the side of caution. An ER visit and an evaluation may find nothing, but it could also save your life.”

THE ZEROEQUIPMENT OPTION
HAVEN’T TIME FOR A GYM VISIT OR SPACE FOR BULKY EXERCISE APPARATUS? THERE’S
A SIMPLER WAY TO GET FIT.
Today’s sophisticated exercise equipment is great—there’s no doubt that, properly and regularly used with discipline and determination, it can help you achieve the body of your dreams. But it’s not your only choice.
Right in your home, using only things that every home contains, there’s another path open to you: the no-equipment approach.
Home has one big selling point: it isn’t hard to get to. In the comfort of your own living room (or rec room, bedroom, office, basement, garage, whatever) and without a workout bench or a Nautilus machine, you can use your own body weight—along with gravity—to power an effective workout. And after all, isn’t the most effective exercise regimen the one you’ll actually perform regularly?
A January 2025 New York Times article called at-home workouts and strength training without equipment the latest health trends that fitness experts “hate”—they’re so easy that anyone can do them with little to no supervision. (You’ll want to check with your doctor, however, to make sure you’re physically able to exercise.)
Is your time limited? Take advantage of those small blocks of unclaimed time that pop up throughout your day. Consider doing squats while you wait for your morning coffee to brew, for example, or find a spot to do wall push-ups or sit-to-stand exercises while lunch is heating up. Waiting for water to boil? Do a couple of lunges in the kitchen or stand on one leg for 20 seconds (then switch to the other) to work on your balance. The

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), after all, recommends strength training for 30 minutes, two non-consecutive days per week, so you may as well fit in a quick workout when you can.
Try this at-home exercise routine, which is suitable for any level of skill (or strength) and requires zero equipment, other than objects found in most homes:
• Bicep curl: Run a towel underneath the seat of a chair. With the back of the chair facing away from you, do a set of curls by lifting the chair with the towel. Most four-legged chairs weigh around 10 pounds.
• Triceps dip: Sit on the edge of the chair and rest your hands on the seat behind you. Position your feet away from the bench, legs straight and heels on the floor. Lower yourself until your upper arms are parallel to the ground, then push back up.
• Step-ups: With one leg, step up onto that sturdy chair and back down again, then repeat with the other leg. (Keep legs straight and try not to bend forward.)
• Squats: Stand in front of that trusty chair with your feet shoulder-width apart. Place your weight more on your heels than on the balls of your feet, and bend your knees as you lower your butt toward the chair in a slow, controlled motion while you count to four. Pause, then slowly rise back up to a standing position.
• Bicycle crunches. Lie on your back with knees bent and feet on the floor. Place your hands behind your head with your elbows out and lift your upper body slightly off the floor. Extend one leg out while bending the other knee toward your chest and twist your upper body so that the opposite elbow almost touches the knee. Repeat for the desired number of reps.

OPPOSITES DO ATTRACT, BUT CAN THEY INSPIRE BALANCED DESIGN? THE CREATORS OF A NEW-CONSTRUCTION RANCH IN CHESTER PROVE THAT ANYTHING’S POSSIBLE.
Design by Jennifer Pacca Interiors

In a new, five-bedroom Chester home set on 20 acres, the open connection among the great room, the kitchen and the dining room called for a unified color scheme. Says the homeowner: “We wanted something sophisticated but adaptable.”

She wanted their new-construction home on 20 acres in Chester to reflect grace and femininity. He favored a tailored, masculine effect. They both sought glam, but not in conflict with the home’s rustic architecture and natural setting. And finally—as if all this weren’t pressure enough—several main living spaces that open to each other cried out for a common thread.
It would be a test of balance to harmonize the longtime Bedminster couple’s forever home, but Jennifer Pacca of the eponymous Wyckoff firm proved herself adept. The key to pulling this off, she says, was a cohesive palette of rose, green and black in varying intensities along with layered design.
“She did a fantastic job,” says homeowner Colleen, whose husband David built the ranch for future retirement years. She explains their quest for a youthful style led to “rustic glam,” and two happy clients—he with a masculine study, she with a feminine master bedroom, along with a blend of their tastes throughout the five-bedroom space.
Perhaps these homeowners knew the depth of the challenge. “They called us prior to breaking ground, and we were involved in all the design from the ground up,” Pacca recalls.
The project, completed in 2023, makes for easy, clutter-free senior living and keeps in mind two college kids, one still on the nest. The American Society of Interior Designers gave its

approval with a Design Excellence Award last year.
While her husband contributed much as the builder, Colleen, a master quilter, created the entry foyer’s sensation—a Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired wall hanging, tapping into the ranch’s palette and textile focus. A multi-pendant chandelier from Hammerton and burnished-gold nail heads on leather chests by Vanguard introduce glam, while a silk fringe ottoman reflects cream and black, this home’s neutral.
This couple loves gatherings, and they appreciate how the great room and kitchen beat together as one. “The space is perfect for entertaining, formally and informally,” Colleen says.
Because they give their pots and pans a workout, adds Pacca, “they wanted a very open kitchen that was very functional.” Yet she also provided eye candy in the gold-trimmed black hood and the black-stained island with bold quartz veining. For a vintage vibe, custom green pendants by Urban Electric complement the floral Roman shades from Schumacher and check-and-brass stools from Charleston Forge. From the clients’ wish list are the golden wood cabinets and subway-tile backsplash.
This page: The kitchen wows with gold trim on a black statement hood and the cabinetry’s gold hardware. Opposite: A “nice detail” that offsets tall ceilings is the wood cabinetry’s decorative glass, Pacca says.

In the great room, Kravet leather sofas and a chenille chair are within reach of a barn-door oak bar and a stone fireplace matching the home’s exterior. An embroidered floral fabric by Zimmer kicked off an eclectic mix of pillows. Completing the color story are abstract art, the cocktail table’s dark marble tray and a black-and-cream rug over wide-plank oak. Keeping it rustic, Pacca draws warmth from wrought iron in the sconces by Hubbardton Forge and crystal-bead chandelier by Iatesta Studio, scaled to impress on the double-height ceiling. Ceiling beams “create the look of an older home,” she explains, while custom wood trusses ground the space.
The more contemporary dining room pays homage to green, in the custom rug and ombre draperies. Pacca also used green to trim linen head chairs, which prove “livable and comfortable for daily use,” she says, as they join upholstered, cream side chairs at a white oak table by Robert James. Three abstracts from Zoe Bios flanked by gold cylinder sconces are what first greet the eye in the dining room, where a linear chandelier by Visual Comfort doubles the glam. Similarly, Pacca served a double portion of wallcoverings, handmade paper by Romo for the walls and faux hide by Elitis for the ceiling.
For the master bathroom’s Greek-isle vibe, the soaking tub

This page: This sitting nook is warm and cozy within reach of the mosaic fireplace. Opposite: A beautiful outdoor vista takes center stage in the master bedroom, elevated by custom furniture such as the mapleand-ceramic nightstands by Vanguard with glass lamps.

sits amidst a grove of blue-andgreen palms by JF Fabrics. This “drama behind the tub” joins a turquoise hexagon floor tile, right off the husband’s palette. Also blue are the glass sconces by Jamie Young paired with a rattan mirror from Made Goods over a simple white vanity. Teasing with notions of Santorini, one of their favorite travel destinations, are the Wendover artwork and the ceramic chandelier.
For the master bedroom, the wife imagined a tall, tufted headboard (custom-made by Pacca’s upholsterer) and pastels for a “really bright but cozy space,” the designer says. Layered rugs topped with pastels launched the décor, while taupe grass cloth grounds the space. A mosaic-surround fireplace sets the toasty stage for relaxation on a blue-and-white wing chair with a mirrored drum table. Pacca derived sparkle from mixing metals, as seen in the fur-fabric bench at the foot of the bed, custom to highlight the view.
“We love the design!” says Colleen. “Both by the architect, Richard Japko, with his structural design, and by Jennifer with her interior design magic. It is everything we hoped for and more.”
This page: Hexagon floor tile creates a burst of fun in blue from the husband’s preferred palette. Opposite: A spa-like setting with palm tree drama and fabric shades from Opuzen surrounds this freestanding tub, paired with a chrome-and-glass cart and white armless chair.

WINTER WONDER ESCAPES
Five Northeast places promise to show off the season at its most scenic.
For some travelers, winter is something to flee, and that’s fine. But it also can be something to savor. Crisp air, sunlight reflecting off ice, snow garbing trees and houses—even the joy of huddling by a fireplace or furnace to warm up with a cup of hot cocoa—these can be memory makers just as surely as any tanningoil-covered sojourn on a baking beach. Finding the right destination, of course, is key. So here are five towns ready to strut their stuff in the cold, places where the energy level is high even when the thermometer reading is low:

FRENCHTOWN, N.J.
Nestled on the banks of the Delaware, Frenchtown is only a bridge away from Bucks County, Pennsylvania (the Uhlerstown–Frenchtown Bridge, to be specific; it includes a pedestrian walking path and is an attraction in its own right). Cozy and quaint with a bustling arts community, Frenchtown’s about a 1-hour trip from Morris County. What to do. For stunning views of frozen streams, lakes and the river, stop by the Frenchtown Preserve, a 150-acre treasure trove of flat walking paths and breathtaking sights. Not crazy about the woods? Wander downtown and see gorgeous Victorian architecture resplendent in snow (and lit by string lights crisscrossing the streets, creating a softly glowing fairyland). Art lovers can stop by top gallery space ArtYard or the Don Hector Glass Studio for eye-popping stained glass. (In late February, ArtYard has a curated exhibit of still lifes from dozens of artists and the historic photographs of Lora Webb Nichols.) Plus, shop curated boutiques featuring everything from books to menswear to home goods. Where to eat. At the Frenchtown Café you can enjoy innovative takes on American classics (espresso mocha and orange ricotta pancakes, for instance). Something more high-end? Stop by Chez Daniel for French dining and first-class service, with menu offerings such as salmon meunière and a 12-ounce, dry-aged pork chop Normandy. More info: frenchtownalive.com

BETHLEHEM, PA.
About an hour from our counties by car, this second-largest city in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley teems with colonial and industrial history, and in winter it’s dressed in its best. There are historic buildings blanketed in snow, walkable landmarks and plenty of cafes and shops just waiting for you to duck inside, warm up and explore.
What to do. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Moravian Church Settlements in Bethlehem are must-see. Explore over 10 acres of original, 18th-century buildings, inspired by the church’s concept of “an ideal city.” Around Valentine’s Day, the Bethlehem Carriage Company offers horse-drawn carriage rides through the city so you and your sweetheart can take in the views in style. Downtown teems with every kind of shopping, from small artisans (Kaleidoscope Collective showcases women-created crafts) to luxury goods (see La Petite Provence for home goods and AM Luxe for style), to spots for the kids (Grandpa Joe’s Candy Shop is surefire). Where to eat. A stunning dining room sets the bar high at 1741 on the Terrace in the Historic Hotel Bethlehem—arched, floor-to-ceiling windows, mosaic floors and heavy, dark wood chairs—but the menu meets that challenge. Prince Edward Island mussels, mushroom risotto and filet mignon are among options here. Or try the Flying Egg, a boutique diner with a madefrom-scratch menu that features honey and apple ricotta toast and five variations of eggs Benedict. More info: visithistoricbethlehem.com
TOWNS

PORTSMOUTH, N.H.
In this New Hampshire city, the 1905 treaty ending the Russo-Japanese War was signed (winning President Teddy Roosevelt the Nobel Peace Prize for brokering the deal). About four and a half hours from our area, Portsmouth has a vibe of New England coastal charm with an effortless modern flair, as the Atlantic Ocean and the Piscataqua River create a daily ode to maritime heritage and natural beauty. You’ll find seaside views, historic buildings and a fantastic dining scene. What to do. Your first stop should be the Strawbery (yes, that’s the spelling!) Banke Museum’s Labrie Family Skate at Puddle Dock Pond, an outdoor skating venue that marries the traditional outdoor New England experience with all the comforts, accessibilities and conveniences of a modern indoor rink. Drop by for public skating, pickup pond hockey and immaculate winter scenery—the ice, tucked between square colonial buildings, is lit by imitation lantern light. Strawbery Banke itself is an indoor/ outdoor history museum—wander the buildings to your heart’s content. And the eminently walkable city puts every delight at your fingertips. Pro tip: Make sure you take in Bow and Ceres streets for icy views of the working harbor and tugboats. Where to eat. There are more than 250 restaurants in Portsmouth—impressive for a city with a population just over 22,000—so there’s no reason to leave hungry. Want cozy coffee and pastries? Elephantine Bakery is a must, with buttery, meltin-your-mouth chocolate almond croissants being many locals’ go-to. Or head over to Cava Tapas and Wine Bar for a seasonally updating menu, dozens of wine options and fun craft cocktails. More info: goportsmouthnh.com

NANTUCKET, MASS.
This small island is a classic summer destination, but it would be folly to write it off in winter. Decreased crowds, beautiful, snow-dusted ocean views and year-round pleasures such as cideries and views of lovely lighthouses await you here. The roughly seven-hour trip here from our counties includes a ferry ride. What to do. The pace of a Nantucket winter is slow and relaxing—exhale, step back and take advantage of it. Take a quiet stroll on the beaches, which will likely be close to empty. Winter sunrises and sunsets over the ocean are particularly stunning here. (Winter temperatures tend to hover in the 30s and 40s in winter, but plan for wind chill.) Wander the historic downtown, which looks plucked from the pages of a storybook. Then head to Nantucket’s three famous lighthouses: Brant Point, Great Point and Sankaty Head. If you catch them under a dusting of snow, it’s pure magic. Afterward, stop by the Whaling Museum, open year-round, and see the 40-foot sperm whale skeleton. Where to eat. If you want small plates, global cuisine and an exclusive, high-end feel, you want The Nautilus, where the menu includes cured steelhead trout tartare and blistered shishito peppers, and the spirit list is extensive. Something more casual? At local favorite B-ACK Yard BBQ the meat is freshly smoked and everything is warm, comforting and delicious.

BAR HARBOR, MAINE
In warmer months, Acadia National Park calls travelers here with promises of picturesque, rocky beaches and glacier-carved peaks, including Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the East Coast. In winter you can take in those sights painted in high-contrast black and white with far fewer crowds, while enjoying the town’s amazing hospitality. It’s a little more than eight hours from North Jersey. What to do. The national park is Bar Harbor’s biggest attraction for good reason, and that doesn’t stop just because the season changes. Its 45 miles of carriage roads are perfect for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, and there are 27 miles of snowmobile routes, ice fishing and views that will steal your breath away. (The park system suggests scenic drives on its website; see nps.gov.) The streets are a treasure trove of small shops to explore and culture to engage with: Try the Abbe Museum, Maine’s only Smithsonian affiliate, for a showcase of Wabanaki Nations’ stories and art. Where to eat. This town is known for fresh seafood, and you’ll want to sample the chowder here on a cold day. Try the Thirsty Whale Tavern for that, plus other seafood favorites (lobster rolls, haddock and fried clams) and fantastic happy-hour options. Or try the Side Street Café for burgers, cocktails, mocktails and legendary shrimp mac n’ cheese.

TASTES
Rolling On!
These recipes wrap bold flavor into unforgettable meals.
CHICKEN CORDON BLEU
Yields 4 servings
INGREDIENTS
4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (around 8 oz. each)
8 slices of Swiss cheese
8 slices of Black Forest ham (around 5 oz.)
2 large eggs
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
11/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
1/4 cup Parmesan cheese, freshly grated
1 Tbs. extra virgin olive oil
kosher salt black pepper
DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 400°F.
Use a long sharp knife, cut a large pocket along the length of each chicken breast. Do not cut it in half. Place one slice of cheese and ham inside each chicken breast.
Prepare the breading station. In one shallow bowl, beat together the eggs with some kosher salt and pepper. In another shallow bowl, mix together the flour with some kosher salt and black pepper. In the last shallow bowl, combine the panko, olive oil, Parmesan cheese, salt and pepper.
Roll the chicken in the flour first, then coat it in the egg, and lastly into the panko mixture. Place on a greased baking sheet and bake for 30-35 minutes until the chicken is cooked and the juices run clear.
Let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.

“Winter weather makes us crave comfort food, and this recipe delivers it without sacrificing nutrition. Skinless chicken breast and Black Forest ham are excellent sources of lean protein. While Swiss cheese adds a bit of indulgence, lower-fat varieties are an easy swap, as they provide the same protein and calcium with less saturated fat and fewer calories.”

TASTES
ITALIAN STUFFED BRACIOLE
Yields 4 servings
INGREDIENTS
For the Breadcrumb Filling ½ cup dried Italian-style breadcrumbs
1 garlic clove, minced
²/³ cup Pecorino Romano cheese, freshly grated ¹/³ cup provolone cheese, freshly grated
2 Tbs. fresh Italian parsley leaves, chopped
1 Tbs. fresh Italian basil, chopped
2 Tbs. olive oil salt, to taste black pepper, freshly ground For the Braciole
1½ lbs. flank steak salt, to taste black pepper, freshly ground, to taste
4 slices thinly sliced prosciutto
2 Tbs. olive oil
1 cup red wine
4 cups homemade tomato sauce
DIRECTIONS
Make the Breadcrumb Mixture
Stir together the breadcrumbs, garlic, cheese, parsley and basil in a medium bowl until combined. Add 2 tablespoons of olive oil and season the mixture with salt and pepper. Set aside.
Prepare the Braciole
Lay the flank steak flat on a wooden board or clean work surface. Pat the steak dry with paper towels. Place one piece between two sheets of parchment paper. With a rolling pin or meat mallet, pound the meat to flatten it to about 1/4-inch thickness. Season both sides generously with salt and pepper.
Sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture over the steak to cover the meat. Add slices of prosciutto over the pounded beef and breadcrumb mixture to cover evenly.
Starting at the short end, roll up the steak (like a jelly roll) to seal the filling. Using butcher’s twine, tie the steak roll to secure it.
Cooking the Braciole
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a heavy, large
ovenproof skillet, or cast-iron pan, over medium heat. Add the braciole to the pan and cook until browned on all sides, about 8 minutes.
Add the wine to the pan and scrape all the browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Bring it to a boil for about 1 minute. Stir in the prepared tomato sauce. Cover partially with foil or an oven-safe lid, and bake until the meat is almost tender. Baste the braciole with the sauce every 30 minutes.
After 1 hour, uncover and continue baking until the meat is tender, about 30 minutes longer. The total cooking time should be about 90 minutes total. You can braise the meat for up to 3 hours. If cooking longer, ensure the sauce doesn’t reduce too much, and add a little beef broth if needed.
Let the braciole rest for 15 minutes. Remove the twine from the braciole. Remove the braciole from the sauce. Cut the braciole crosswise and diagonally into ½-inch-thick slices. Transfer the slices to plates. Spoon the sauce over and serve. Enjoy with ciabatta bread to soak up the sauce.
“This is a perfect winter dish for serving guests or for a special family dinner on a cozy night indoors! The rich, savory flavor of flank steak will satisfy but still allow you to stick to your healthy eating resolutions. As a lean cut of beef, flank steak is an excellent source of protein and iron. Pair it with a side of roasted Brussels sprouts or sautéed broccoli rabe to boost the vitamin and fiber power and round out the meal.”

Derek Fine, D.M.D.
Jenni Kwiatkowski, D.D.S.
35 West Main St. Suite 208, Denville, NJ 07834 | 973.627.3617 | www.aestheticfamilydentistry.com
AESTHETIC FAMILY DENTISTRY OF DENVILLE, FOUNDED OVER 40 YEARS AGO, offers a highly technological, yet gentle and holistic approach to dentistry rarely found in a family practice. Dr. Derek Fine, Dr. Jenni Kwiatkowski and their associate, Dr. Harsh Patel, are focused on each patient’s overall well-being and how dental health affects the body.
The dentists recognize that first impressions are critical from the initial moments of contact with the kindest and most devoted team to the waiting room’s ambiance, patients get a picture of how they will be treated and if it’s the right practice for their family. The dentists also share cell phone numbers with patients, finding that it offers peace of mind and promotes patient physician trust.
The dentists look for homeopathic options whenever possible to avoid the use of drugs and chemicals. For many procedures, they’ll use an ozone generator which kills bacteria, viruses, and fungus without the use of chemicals or other medications. Their newest addition to technology is called the Light Scalpel, used to treat infants, children and adults lip and tongue ties. This helps new moms with infants having
difficulty breastfeeding and allows the baby to transfer milk better, gain weight and have less reflux and colic. The benefit to an adult is that it promotes better nasal breathing, improving breathing issues and/or sleep apnea.
At Aesthetic Family Dentistry, it’s all about the best patient experience possible. For example, patients feel more comfortable having a 3D scanner create their impressions. Aesthetic Family Dentistry is especially proficient when it comes to the diagnosis and treatment of TMJ, sleep breathing disorders and headaches. Additionally, there’s a wide array of traditional and advanced dental procedures, as well as cosmetic dentistry, Botox and a variety of dermal fillers.
As patients are becoming more aware of natural alternative in medicine and dentistry our practice has been busier than ever. We have welcomed Dr Harsh Patel to our practice. He continues to strive for excellence and is a quick study of the homeopathic treatments we provide. Our team is committed to continuing education and staying up to date with the latest technology so we can offer our patients the best there is.

TOP DENTISTS ESSEX COUNTY’S 2026
TO HELP YOU FIND GREAT DENTAL CARE, Morris & Essex magazine commissioned Professional Research Services (PRS) of Troy, Michigan to conduct a peer-review survey of hundreds of practicing and active dentists across Essex County. Dentists were asked to choose which of their peers they consider the very best, across seven different practice areas—endodontics, general dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics and prosthodontics.
All the final honorees were fact-checked with the State of New Jersey and the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs License Verification System. The highest vote getters within each specialty who are in good standing with the state are included here in the 2026 “Essex County’s Top Dentists” list.
There are many other good dentists practicing in Essex County who may not be included on this list; we recommend that you consider “Essex County’s Top Dentists” and other resources before scheduling your next dental procedure.

RESTAURANT REVIEW
The Brick Is Back
The Indian eatery Brick Lane has returned to Montclair with a revamped menu, a modernized interior, all the flavors once beloved there—and some new ones too.
Little did I know when I made a pre-pandemic visit to Brick Lane Curry that it would be the last time I’d dine in the popular Upper Montclair restaurant—at least in that incarnation. The eatery’s 2024 closure, after 15 years, looked to be permanent. It left locals nostalgic for the casual eatery’s thoughtful Indian cuisine and welcoming atmosphere. That longing, however, didn’t have to last long—the restaurant triumphantly reopened in 2025, with a completely revamped menu and a freshly redesigned interior that blends modern elegance with the warmth that longtime patrons remember. Owners also shortened the name to simply Brick Lane, a nod to the historic London street and its diverse curry houses.
My girlfriend and I decided to return for a Sunday dinner. From the moment we stepped inside, we sensed that this was more than a reopening. It’s a reinvention, one that honors the restaurant’s roots while embracing bold new flavors and a refined dining experience. Gone are the creamcolored walls and wood paneling; they’ve been replaced by navy wallpaper adorned with golden pineapples, framed art and dim lighting.
The evening began with a warm welcome: Complimentary creamy tomato soup, velvety and aromatic, was served to us in miniature cups. It was thick and flavorful, likely made with coconut milk instead of heavy cream, and a perfect answer to the evening chill.
To go with the soup, our server also brought crispy, light-as-air papadum (Indian crackers) and vibrant mint and tamarind chutneys for dipping. (A full order, had we placed it, also would have included mango and tomato chutney.) It was a perfect introduction, pleasing the palate with layers of spice and texture while showcasing the kitchen’s attention to detail and commitment to quality.
Our next bite we ordered from the small plates menu: pani puri, a common street food found throughout markets and

bazaars in India. The dish comes with crispy puris (fried dough balls) filled with finely diced potato, red onion, peas and chickpeas, as well as a small carafe of spicy water that we poured over each ball. With tangy, spicy and slightly sweet elements, each bite was irresistible.
A second starter, which easily could’ve been a main dish, was methi salmon.
This was a large plate of perfectly seared fish imbued with smoky spices and the subtle bitterness of fenugreek.
The salmon—surrounded by mixed greens, carrots and other veggies—was rich with nuanced flavors thanks to the accompanying herbs and sauces, making it a memorable centerpiece.
Following it was another showstopper: tandoori chicken. This “starter” too could’ve been an entrée . Each piece of chicken was marinated in yogurt and aromatic spices, roasted to tender perfection with a hint of char that added depth and smoky warmth.
For our main course, we shared dal makhni, a dish that is comfort and sophistication in every spoonful. It featured slow-cooked black lentils that were dressed with sizzling butter, cream and spices—all of which were poured into the serving pot at the table. The vegetarian dish combined with fragrant basmati rice as well as a side of warm, hearty onion kulcha and tangy raita (yogurt with herbs and spices) embodied the warmth and depth of traditional Indian cooking.
And just when the meal felt complete, Brick Lane surprised us again with complimentary rice pudding. The dessert was delicately sweet and scented with cardamom, a comforting, nostalgic finish. My only cavil: The small serving just teased my sweet tooth, and I was craving more. Perhaps I’ll inquire about a mango lassi or a gulab jamun for dessert next time—I just won’t wait for Brick Lane to reinvent itself again for my return.

A MORRIS & ESSEX MOMENT

“We own a business called Mind of Dog, which is something between adventure training and a daycare service for dogs. This picture was taken in Succasunna around Thanksgiving. We take a group photo wherever we hike, and it always takes about 10 minutes to get the dogs to all sit still. But with consistency and affection, we can make it happen.”
