The Spring Reset

Spring has a funny way of arriving when we least expect it. One day you’re reaching for a heavy coat, and the next you’re opening windows, letting the fresh air in and wondering how your closet somehow filled up with sweaters you haven’t worn since the 2010s. That’s the beauty of spring—it’s the season of the great reset. Out with the old, in with the fresh. And while many people think of spring cleaning as a time to reorganize the garage or finally face that mysterious drawer in the kitchen, I like to think it’s also the perfect moment to give your wardrobe a little attention.

At Garmany, spring always feels like the start of something exciting. New collections arrive from some of the finest designers around the world, and suddenly the store fills with lighter fabrics, brighter colors and pieces that make you want to plan somewhere nice to go. Fashion, after all, should feel fun. It should make you stand a little taller, walk a little more confidently and maybe even accept a compliment or two without pretending you “just threw this on.”

For the gentlemen, spring is the welcome return of breathable tailoring, lightweight sportcoats and shirts that remind you how good it feels to retire a few of those heavy winter layers. It’s also the time of year when I gently suggest taking an honest look at your closet. If you have a jacket that’s been described as “vintage” by your children, it might be time to let it enjoy a well-earned retirement. What to add to your wardrobe rotation this season? Turn to page 42 to see the latest styles from trusted brands like Kiton,

Brunello Cucinelli and Stile Latino, among others. For the ladies, spring fashion is where creativity really shines. Elegant dresses, vibrant prints and beautifully crafted pieces from across the globe bring a sense of energy that makes getting dressed feel less like a routine and more like a daily celebration. Of course, every great wardrobe refresh begins with a little closet editing. My advice is simple: If you haven’t worn it in a while, it may be time to make room for something spectacular—perhaps pieces from this season’s Veronica Beard, Victoria Beckham or TWP collections. Turn to page 42 to see the latest styles. What else can you find in this spring issue of Garmany? Read about an artist whose paintings are not only pleasing to the eye, but they also can stimulate the mind (page 36). If you’re next get-together features surf and turf, follow our sommelier’s tips for selecting the best wine for the evening (page 68). The scoop on fashion icons and A-listers Charlie Hunnam (page 28) and Scarlett Johansson (page 34)? We have that too! More than anything, spring is a reminder that life feels a little better when you step into it looking and feeling your best. The days get longer, the invitations start rolling in and suddenly there are plenty of good reasons to dress up—whether it’s dinner with friends, a weekend event or simply deciding that Tuesday deserves a great outfit too. If along the way you discover a jacket, dress or pair of shoes that makes you smile every time you put it on, I’d say spring is already off to a very good start. Start your season by visiting us at Garmany, and let us be a part of your spring refresh. We can’t wait to see you!

Bravo for COUNT BASIE

After a century in the spotlight, the Count Basie Center for the Arts still commands a standing ovation. “The Basie” has been the cultural heartbeat of downtown Red Bank since it opened in 1926 as a grand movie palace. Named for jazz legend Count Basie, the storied stage over the years has welcomed icons from Bruce Springsteen to Tony Bennett, alongside top comedians, Broadway tours and film premieres. ASK MR. ETIQUETTE

Johnell Garmany explains how to sail through life without giving offense. How can I look put-together while still embracing today’s casual culture?

—Confused in Colts Neck

Somewhere along the way, “casual” started getting a bad reputation. For some men, it became code for wrinkled shirts, tired sneakers and whatever happened to be closest on the closet floor. But a gentleman knows casual doesn’t mean careless. In fact, the most stylish men often look their best when they’re dressed down.

The secret is intention. A great pair of dark denim or well-cut trousers, a knit polo or lightweight sweater, and suddenly you look relaxed but still put together. Toss on a soft sportcoat, and the outfit quietly steps up a level—without looking like you tried too hard. Fit ma tters more in casual clothing than almost anywhere else. Clothes should skim the body, not squeeze it or swallow it. When something fits properly, even the simplest outfit looks elevated.

Then there are the shoes. They’re the quickest way to tell whether someone understands casual style. Clean sneakers, suede loafers or leather drivers suggest thought and polish.

Beat-up gym shoes suggest you gave up somewhere around the driveway.

Casual style is really about respect—for yourself and for the people you’re meeting. Looking put together says the moment matters.

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s ease with a touch of intention. And that, more than anything, is the mark of a well-dressed gentleman.

Elements of MEN’S STYLE

…in which Johnell Garmany solves your sartorial dilemmas.

Which style trends excite you most this season?

Styles are relaxed but still refined. Hem lines are coming down, and we’re seeing more men embrace double-breasted jackets, in both suits and sportcoats. You can try separating the suit jacket and pairing it with nice 5-pocket pants for a relaxed yet polished look.

Which shades should I work into my wardrobe this spring?

You usually think of it as a fall color, but brown is big this season. It’s so different than typical bright hues of spring, but it’s such a rich

color. You can pair it with white or green for a sharp look. Pinks and greens also are hot for spring.

New Jersey summers are brutal. Can I dress down for outdoor events and weddings?

Summers here are hot, but that’s not an excuse to look sloppy. Tailored shirts should be neat and tucked in, and sportcoats and jackets always should be proper length—I still see guys with sleeves down to their knuckles. For cool trousers, check out Brunello Cucinelli’s denim pleated pants.

What accessories or finishing touches can elevate a look?

A Simonnot-Godard pocket square is a simple and elegant a sportcoat—in fact, sportcoat without pocket square. And, believe it or not, ties are coming back!

When clients walk into the store this season, what are they most eager to see?

The “coverup” category is so popular; we’re talking about sweaters, cardigans, sweater jackets and sportcoats.

You can wear them to the theater, dinner and events. With lightweight materials like jersey fabric, these are big even during summer. We have great pieces by Baldassari, Fugato and Fradi.

If you could build the ultimate summer outfit using pieces in the store today, what would it be?

Guys these days want to appear put together. A sportcoat is the easiest way to dress up. Pair it with a T-shirt, cotton pants by Pescarolo, Santoni loafers and, of course, that Simonnot-Godard pocket square.

What’s one style “rule” you think people should break more often? I used to have some trepidation but with polo. gift graduation Father’s has amazing bag be a all the don’t play, bag me take tennis!

THEY CALL HIM SEXY

Actor Charlie Hunnam stirs passions with his bad-boy persona and his ripped physique. But have you noticed he can also act? By Donna Rolando

Hitting the streets of L.A. like a self-professed Hells Angel and taking risks that later struck him with fear, British-American actor Charlie Hunnam shares with the legendary James Dean a motorcycle-inflated, bad-boy image women can’t help but swoon over. He’s most identified as Jackson “Jax” Teller, head of an outlaw motorcycle gang for the entire six-year-run of the FX series SonsofAnarchy, during which the heartthrob often appeared ribbed and shirtless (or in equally tantalizing leather) and on a Harley—what else?

It is a role that got him two Critics Choice nominations for best actor and became so intwined with Hunnam’s spirit that he actually grieved in 2014, as Teller crashed into a semi-truck, mirroring his father’s death. The 2003 Harley Davidson Dyna Super Glide the actor stole from the set, as confessed to EntertainmentTonight, no doubt eased the pain, calling to mind all the stunts he’d performed. But after 65,000 miles, he chilled a bit on riding, explaining in an October Wired interview, “As soon as we finished the show, it was like the spell was broken.”

Whether Hunnam will resurrect his Harley days remains one of the top fan questions on Google. Recent reports suggest an affirmative reply, though the star is mindful that in L.A., “There’s a lot of Teslas and Priuses on the road that will kill you stone dead if you’re not careful.”

Undeniably a sex symbol, Hunnam has graced magazine covers galore, though People hasn’t tapped him as its “Sexiest Man Alive”—yet. He’s the masculine face of Mackage’s 2025 luxe fashions and stood out at the 2025 L.A. County Museum of Art gala for stylish sophistication in a velvet Gucci shirt and black trousers with a horse-bit-adorned belt.

According to the health-and-wellness website Total Shape in 2025, the 6-foot-1 Hunnam still has a great bod as he turns 46 and describes working out as not just physical activity but also a source of positive energy to

combat “slightly dark thoughts.” His workout gear as depicted in street photos is all function, not frill, just as one might expect from a serious athlete.

With or without People’s nod, Hunnam has a slew of sexy roles to his credit. Born in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, in 1980, he was discovered on Christmas Eve as he flirted with a woman in the shoe department of a local store, ending up at age 18 on the BBC teen drama BykerGrove. Before his next birthday came his breakthrough role as schoolboy Nathan Maloney on the ’90s British TV series QueerasFolk. The explicit scenes found even his dad questioning the actor’s sexuality, according to Out magazine. (For the record, Hunnam is straight and shares an L.A. ranch with partner Morgana McNelis, an actress, film producer and jewelry designer.)

Moving to the States was a dream he eagerly embraced, playing a flirtatious theater major in the NBC comedic series Undeclared (2001–02) and gaining international acclaim in the suspense thriller Abandon (2002). Other roles that pumped up his heartthrob status—purposely steering clear of more comedy—were Pacific Rim (2013), KingArthur:LegendoftheSword (2017), TheLostCityofZ (his favorite, 2017) and TripleFrontier (2019).

It wasn’t the sex scenes that compelled him to decline the lead in 50ShadesofGrey in 2015, he says, but creative differences and prior commitments with SonsofAnarchy and the 2015 film Crimson Peak. Yet his rugged physique—the product of years of lifting between gigs and Brazilian jiu-jitsu—made him a natural choice.

While Hunnam says he’s never used a body double, he also sees being a sex symbol as not entirely win-win. As quoted in IMDb, he says, “It’s both collateral damage and a huge opportunity. It’s a visual medium, and it makes it a lot easier to get roles if you’re easier on the eyes, but the reality is you get on the set, and every scene is a challenge to make work.”

Hunnam doesn’t take just any role. He reveals through IMDb that he’s been willing to sacrifice— eat low-budget eggs and beans if need be—for careerbuilding parts. His gravitation to widely diverse parts— such as that of rural Wisconsin’s infamous murderer and body snatcher in the October 2025 Netflix release of Monster:TheEdGeinStory—also demonstrates his ability to soar beyond beefcake. Always wanting to get to the guts of life issues, he took on the script to understand the man behind the 1950s massacre. (While Gein’s killing spree lacks the notoriety of, say, Jeffrey Dahmer’s acts, he’s been called the godfather of serial killers and inspired Hitchcock’s Psycho.)

Though not a big horror fan, Hunnam revealed in an October “ExtraTV” YouTube video that he embraced the role for the enormous challenge. “As I get older, like, I just want to do better and better work, and I want to really be engaged by trying to do hard things in my life,” he said. “This character seemed impossible for me to be able to play, and I was terrified, and I thought that was a good place to start.”

He previously appeared in what he’s called his trilogy of madmen, playing variously unhinged characters in Cold Mountain (2003), GreenStreetHooligans (2005) and Children of Men (2006). Other credits include the Dickens tale NicholasNickleby (2002), The Gentlemen (2019), Jungleland (2019), Last Looks (2021), the Apple TV+ series Shantaram (2022) and Rebel Moon (2023).

Still to come at press time is Criminal, an eight-episode Amazon Prime crime series in which Hunnam portrays Leo, a master thief who acts with intellect, not violence. Future projects include Monster: The LizzieBordenStory and possibly KingArthur2 (as a trailer suggests), but the dream job—the one that would make eggs and beans worth it—would be the role of James Bond. Does the almost sexiest man alive have a chance?

WOMEN’S TRENDS:

Elevated EVERYDAY

From sharp suiting to delicate textures, this season blends power and softness for modern, expressive style.

Effortless AUTHORITY

This season, power dressing gets a refresh. Think refined tailoring—sharp blazers, impeccably cut trousers and structured dresses that mean business, but feel anything but stiff. Designers are embracing the balance between strength and softness, pairing clean lines with fluid fabrics, relaxed silhouettes and feminine details. The result? Pieces that project confidence while still feeling effortless.

A beautifully tailored blazer— single or double breasted—over a silk blouse, or crisp trousers styled with a lightweight knit, captures the spirit perfectly. These are clothes designed for real life: polished for the office yet relaxed enough for dinner, drinks or a weekend event. In other words, modern power tailoring isn’t about dressing up—it’s about dressing smart, with pieces that move seamlessly from work to wherever the day leads.

DREAMY ELEGANCE

Soft romanticism brings a welcome dose of lightness to the season’s sharper tailoring. Designers are leaning into feminine fabrics and fluid silhouettes for an effect that’s airy, elegant and just a little bit dreamy.

Sheer layered dresses float with every step, while bias-cut silhouettes skim the body in that ef fortlessly flattering way fashion insiders love.

Lace and subtle lingerie-inspired details add texture and intrigue—romantic, but never overly precious. Feminine blouses and soft midi skirts round out the look, pairing just as easily with denim as they do with tailored trousers. Consider it the dressing: proof that can coexist—and

Prints are getting a petite makeover this spring, and small-scale patterns are taking center stage. These add charm and personality to clothing and accessories without shouting for attention. Think delicate floral blooms, cheerful bandana motifs and scarf-inspired designs that feel fresh, wearable and endlessly versatile.

On dresses, blouses and skirts, tiny florals create movement and texture, while scarves, handbags and even shoes in miniature prints offer a playful way to mix and match. Veronica Beard,

The Muse

Frankly, Scarlett...

Let the record show that Ms. Johansson, Hollywood’s highest-grossing actor, beat her twin brother into this world by a full three minutes.

You could say actress Scarlett Ingrid Johansson was born with a passion for success. More than a triple threat—besides being an actress she’s a singer, a model, a director and a producer—Johansson achieved a net worth of $165 million in 2025, according to Celebrity Net Worth She surpassed No. 2 Samuel L. Jackson and No. 3 Robert Downey Jr., according to Cosmopolitan, as Hollywood’s top-grossing actor. For 2017’s live-action cult drama Ghost in the Shell alone she earned $17.5 million.

No doubt significant gains came from franchise films such as Jurassic World Rebirth, which globally raked in $322.5 million its debut weekend in July 2025, per NBC. Ditto for her award-winning role as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow in nine Marvel Cinematic Universe flicks, starting with Iron Man 2 in 2010. But she has also endorsed top brands like David Yurman, Calvin Klein and Dolce & Gabbana—and launched her own production company.

Maybe it all traces back (then again, maybe it doesn’t) to what she calls the most important three minutes of her life: the margin by which her arrival preceded that of her twin brother Hunter. Whatever its ultimate fuel, “Scar Jo’s” ascent to the top of Hollywood’s pay ladder has been a notable coup. As a woman in a “fickle and political industry,” she confided to Good Morning America, “It’s always an uphill battle and fight.”

Besides the big bucks, she’s been showered with accolades, gaining the prestigious star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame in 2012. She can also boast a 2004 BAFTA award for the comedydrama Lost in Translation, her breakthrough role, in which she starred opposite Bill Murray. Then there

were five Golden Globe nominations—for Lost in Translation, Girl with a Pearl Earring, A Love Song for Bobby Long, Match Point (Best Supporting Actress) and Marriage Story, spanning the period 2004–2020.

Johansson won a Tony Award in 2010, when she starred on Broadway in A View from the Bridge, fulfilling a lifelong dream. She’s one of the few actresses to receive simultaneous Academy-Award nominations. They were for 2019 films, the dramas Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit

All that, and the Manhattan-born Johansson is just 41.

The secret of her success? In her biography on IMDb, she says, it just might be her “obsessive character,’’ which finds her manicuring her own nails at 3 in the morning.

But one can’t forget the years of hard work, starting as a child actress with off-Broadway Sophistry with Ethan Hawke, as well as training at NYC’s Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. In her early days, she took rejection so hard that her mom reserved her calendar for film auditions, perhaps shaping her career.

“I always had the support to do whatever I wanted to do,” she says of her parents—her manager mom, who worked as a producer, and her Danish architect dad.

Her film debut came at age 9, when she played opposite John Ritter in the fantasy comedy North (1994). After minor roles, she was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award for her portrayal of the 11-year-old sister of a pregnant teen in Manny & Lo (1996). Also noteworthy was her starring role in Robert Redford’s The Horse Whisperer (1998) as a teen struggling to rebound from an equestrian accident. And she made an impression in 2001’s Ghost World, a comedy-drama based on a comic book, a film that critic Roger Ebert said he wanted to hug.

Johansson’s good looks—as well as her red-carpet allure, which Harper’s Bazaar called megawatt glamour—have clearly been part of her success. Often on a media pedestal for her bod and beauty, she was named “Sexiest Woman Alive” twice by Esquire

She and first husband Ryan Reynolds shared the sex-symbol spotlight in 2010, she as GQ’s “Babe of the Year” and he as People’s “Sexiest Man Alive.” No such awards for husband number two, French journalist and art dealer Romain Dauriac, with whom she has an 11-year-old daughter, Rose. And time will tell for Colin Jost, the Saturday Night Live comedian-writer she wed in 2020. The couple, who met while Johansson hosted SNL, have a 4-year-old son, Cosmo.

On the red carpet, Scar Jo’s been known to evoke drama with sparkle and bold color. She wore a navy Thierry Mugler couture gown accented with De Beers jewelry for the 2025 Oscars, per MSN, and a cream-colored strapless gown with matching drop earrings for the 2025 Emmys, according to E! News

Her street style is minimalistic, classic and high-end.

Fame and fortune have not blinded this actress to the plight of others. Among her many humanitarian interests, she has traveled to Rwanda in the fight against AIDS, entertained for U.S. troops in the Persian Gulf and even missed the Oscars touring India and Sri Lanka for global charity Oxfam.

What’s next? Don’t expect any Marvel magic as Johansson seems to have tired of Black Widow. But the horror movie The Exorcist and sci-fi thriller Lucy 2 are both on the horizon, with Johansson anticipated as star.

While most of Johansson’s life now centers on moviemaking and parenting, she also confesses to a “hippy-dippy wish” to own a vineyard or an organic farm sometime. She has even joked about how she would get things done in the Oval Office if she wore the President’s shoes for a day.

We could do worse.

Passions In Frames

Playful, colorful and deeply emotive, the paintings of Angus Martin may take you to aesthetic heights you can almost hear.

Close your eyes and imagine dozing off to music. The way the melody drifts and blurs together with your thoughts, the way the world goes soft and malleable, the way imagined figures and your own feelings start to blend together and dreams feel as if they’re at your fingertips—it takes a talented artist to conjure that warm, liminal space. Sydney-based painter Angus Martin has that talent; his paintings invite the viewer into a world where the human form is fluid and appealingly blurred, lines are strong but the forms they define abstract, colors are nearly giddy with richness and every stroke sings of the emotion that drove the brush.

Martin began his art journey styling the human body rather than depicting it, as a hairdresser in Adelaide, South Australia. He thought he’d be giving people creative, singular hairstyles, but discovered that his days were filled mostly with pedestrian trims and touch-ups. Returning to school, he studied graphic design and was awarded the South Australian Arts Excellence Award. He suspected that painting would remain a side gig as he made his living designing graphics in the advertising industry. But six months after the sale of his first painting, he quit that corporate job—and he hasn’t looked back since.

One can see why. Martin describes his style as primarily “emotional,” pulling from his own experience and, always, from music, which he counts as his greatest inspiration. “My works center around capturing the feelings and emotions that arise from music, lyrics, quotes and poems,” he has said. The human form distorts to that music as if in a dance, effortlessly abstract and accented with deep, saturated colors. So open your eyes and ears and let yourself drift. Then turn the page and let Martin take you into his world.

Based in Sydney, Australia, painter Angus Martin uses abstract forms and saturated colors to convey deep emotions—and, he hopes, forge a connection with his audience. This piece, titled “Emotion, Motion, Ocean,” was inspired by a quotation from mental health professional Jenna Sackman that begins: “When I’m particularly overwhelmed or drowning in negative emotions, I close my eyes, take a deep breath and remind myself that life is like an ocean.”

This page: The title of this piece, “Scintillate,” is a word that means to dazzle or impress with liveliness or wit or to shine brightly. It’s meant to encourage the viewer to do just that. Says Martin: “I used black to envelop the figure to symbolize the darkness they are about to ‘shed,’ and kept the internal area blank as a reminder to keep your chin up when you feel empty. You are a blank canvas and can create yourself from within, and ultimately you will scintillate in all you do.”

Opposite: In “Prism,” a human figure is confronted with contrasting shapes and overlapping elements, representing distractions and clouding thoughts. But the figure is still focused and staring confidently ahead. Says Martin: “It’s symbolic of seeing through the fog and finding clarity.”

Grape Pro tips for SURF & TURF

Has combining the flavors of land and sea put you in a matchmaking mood? Good. Now it’s time to choose a wine.

There’s something timeless about surf and turf—the convergence of land and sea on one beautifully set table. A perfectly seared steak alongside pristine seafood is a succulent study in contrasts, and while premium food ingredients are paramount, the right wine can bring the entire experience into harmony. Whether you’re hosting an intimate, sit-down dinner or a lively buffet crowd, thoughtful pairings make a meal a memorable occasion.

“The ideal pairing of wine and food should elevate multiple senses: aroma, flavor, visual appeal, tactile feel, emotions and a sense of elegance,” says Michael Perman, a longtime certified sommelier and founder of C’est What?, a Portland, Oregon-based wine-tasting and events organization.

Bold red wines like Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux blends are natural matches for red-meat entrées such as ribeye and New York strip, while white varietals like Sauvignon Blanc and Vermentino, with their bright acidity, are happy companions to shrimp and lobster. But can one wine complement both steak and seafood?

“Finding one wine that serves both masters (the surf and the turf) requires balance and precision,” says Perman. “The ideal wine will have a solid structure, balancing

tannins and acids, delivering powerful vor with complexity but not overwhelming either of the two culinary creations.”

A Burgundy like Premier or Grand Cru is a good place to start, he says. Or perhaps try a Gevrey-Chambertin. “It be exquisite because the black fruit will expressive and rich, while tannins will tight but silky,” he says. Another option a Chassagne-Montrachet from producer Domaine Ramonet, which creates both reds (Pinot Noir) and whites (Chardonnay). “A Chassagne-Montrachet will be delightful, as red fruits will emerge along with more floral and earth tones, violets and the forest floor,” says Perman.

Our expert also recommends factoring in the profile of any sauces or spices. A Châteauneufdu-Pape, which exudes baking spices like clove and cinnamon, also pairs well with dried herbs such as rosemary and thyme.

In the end, a successful surf-and-turf dinner is about balance—thoughtful wine pairings that will allow every element on the plate, and in the glass, to shine.

BOTTLES TO TRY

• 2019 Drouhin Gevrey Chambertin Premier Cru. “Seek this year specifically, as 2019 was an excellent year for red Burgundy,” says sommelier Michael Perman.

• 2020 Domaine Confuron-Cotetidot Vosne Romanée Premier Cru. “The beautiful black fruit, Earl Grey tea, violet and sandalwood will complement ribeye, filet and strip steaks as well as lobster, scallops and shrimp,” he says.

• 2021 Hamilton Russell Hemelen-Aarde Valley Pinot Noir (South Africa). “This selection,” our expert notes, “has well-integrated oak and silky tannins that pair well with any red meat and seafood.”

• 2008 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-duPape. According to Perman, this lighter, fresher year is a perfect partner for surfand-turf.

Sporting Life

The Game Is Where You Put It

The Keisers have perfected the art of placing golf courses where they didn’t seem to belong but worked beautifully. Now their success story moves to East Texas. By Robert Beringela

The surname Keiser is synonymous with golf. It started with the patriarch, Mike Keiser, who parlayed a fortune from the greeting-card business into a project that forever altered the landscape of the game. Prior to Bandon Dunes, the resort Keiser founded on the Oregon Coast, conventional wisdom held that golf courses needed to sit near major airports and cosmopolitan hubs, places where traveling golfers could touch down, snag their bags off the carousel and squeeze in 18 before dark. Bandon blew up those assumptions and replaced them with a “Field of Dreams” template: If you built it on a cool site, they will come, no matter how far they have to travel.

After Bandon, Keiser carried that philosophy inland. In central Wisconsin, he and his sons, Michael and Chris, brought Sand Valley to life on heaving dunes that Ice Age glaciers had left behind. Think links golf, without the ocean. In the years since, Mike has stepped back from the daily operation, leaving the Keiser portfolio under the care of his sons. Michael, in particular, has not slowed. Last summer he presided over preview play at Rodeo Dunes, where the first of multiple courses will open next spring in the hills outside Denver.

The Keiser story does not end there.

The next chapter is unfolding farther south. Also slated to open next year, Wild Spring Dunes carries the Keiser ethos into a remote swath of East Texas, roughly equidistant from Dallas and Houston and a shorter hop from Shreveport. The property sprawls across more than 2,400 acres of dunes, meadows and spring-fed creeks, land long used for hunting, logging and fermenting moonshine. The rolling forests of tall pines and hardwoods, the spring-fed creeks cutting through red dirt, the natural movement in the ground— East Texas has long possessed the raw ingredients for compelling golf. Sometimes, great sites just need to be discovered.

To make the most of it, for the first course Michael Keiser tapped Tom Doak,

the minimalist master famed for working lightly on the land. The vaunted design duo of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw will return for the second.

If there is a single symbol of the place, it is Old Baldy, a treeless, 40-foot sandy hillock that rises unexpectedly from the East Texas pines. At Wild Spring Dunes, Old Baldy will serve as both a landmark and a launching pad: Three tee shots across the eventual two courses will fly from its slopes. Elsewhere, the hill will come into view or into play in ways that tie the property together, a recurring topographical refrain.

Wild Spring Dunes’s second 18 is already in the works, along with a short course, a sprawling putting course and a state-of-the-art practice facility. Lodging and real estate will follow, including private cottages and estate homes. But the core of the project is the land itself.

Finding that land is its own story. Ever since Bandon reshaped the business, the search for untouched, sandy ground has become almost a cottage industry, with developers, designers and lone-wolf enthusiasts scouring satellite imagery for the next great site. Brett Messerall was one of those lone wolves. A Dallas native, he took the hunt to obsessive lengths, sifting through aerial photos, topographical maps, soil surveys and government reports, looking for a needle in the haystack of East Texas. When he found it, he picked up the phone.

Cold call number one went to Doak, who agreed to inspect the site in person. The architect walked the property and confirmed what Messerall had suspected: The place was worth pursuing. Cold call number two went to Michael Keiser. The rest is history.

For the Keisers, Wild Spring Dunes is less a departure than a continuation of a map they’ve been sketching for decades. In the coming year, East Texas will become yet another family landmark, a new dot in the growing constellation of remote places that for players more than reward the long haul they require.

HEAVY, MAN

Get hip to the deadlift. It requires just you, a barbell and the elemental force that has helped to shape strong bodies for eons.

Remember when wrestler and actor John Cena went on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and, wearing a shirt and tie, lifted the horizontal talk-show host as if he were a barbell? Hoisting the lean funnyman was scarcely a challenge for Cena; just a few days earlier he’d recorded a more than 600-pound deadlift—on his 40th birthday. Asked by Fallon why he would choose to mark that milestone in such a presumably self-punishing way, the TV guest replied succinctly: “I’m John Cena.”

The rest of us aren’t, of course. But we do have access to a basic, low-tech technique that’s been helping folks bulk and muscle up almost since muscles were invented: the deadlift.

In an era when boutique fitness concepts and luxury wellness retreats proliferate, the deadlift remains refreshingly elemental. No frills, no gimmicks—it’s just you, the floor, a barbell and gravity. Yet within its elegant simplicity lies one of the most universally praised movements in strength training. Revered by athletes, trainers and physiologists alike, the deadlift is often considered the gold standard of functional strength—not for its flash, but for its capacity to transform the entire body with unmistakable efficiency.

At its core, the deadlift is about mastery over a fundamental human action: picking something up from the ground. Here’s how it works: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and shins close to the barbell; push your glutes back and bend down to grab the bar; grip the bar and drive your feet through the floor, pulling the bar up; stand up straight and hold before slowly lowering the barbell to the ground.

“Most people don’t know that deadlifting is not actually a back exercise, even though your back is

working,” says Noelle McKenzie, certified personal trainer, corrective exercise specialist and co-founder of Leading Edge Personal Trainers in New York City. “When performed properly it’s primarily a hipdominant movement that targets the hamstrings and glutes more than anything else.”

If it’s executed with precision, the deadlift is a full-body symphony of coordinated power. Few movements recruit as many major muscle groups simultaneously—hamstrings, glutes, quadriceps, lats, traps, forearms and the entire core. This engagement builds strength that transcends the gym, reinforcing posture, enhancing balance and improving the body’s everyday mechanics. It’s little wonder the deadlift has earned a reputation as the “king” of lifts: It delivers exceptional results without demanding complex choreography or specialized equipment.

For those accustomed to curated training environments and personalized regimens, the deadlift offers another virtue: adaptability. “The deadlift is built on the hip hinge, a basic human movement we all use every day, and it can be adapted to any fitness level,” says McKenzie. “Beginners can start with regressions like hinging to a wall, using dumbbells, kettlebells or even resistance bands before progressing to a barbell. The movement meets you where you are, which makes it accessible to everyone, not just seasoned lifters or athletes.”

Deadlifts also welcome customization, allowing lifters to tailor movement to different goals simply by adjusting one aspect: grip. Subtle changes in how the hands meet the bar can alter muscle emphasis, create new challenges or address imbalances, giving even seasoned athletes new ways to refine their technique.

The traditional double-overhand grip is the purest expression of the deadlift, emphasizing grip

strength and balanced development across the upper back. It’s ideal for moderate loads and for reinforcing foundational mechanics. As the weight increases, many lifters transition to the mixed grip, with one hand overhand and the other underhand. This configuration locks the bar more securely into the hands, mitigating the risk of roll and allowing for heavier pulls. It also introduces a slight rotational demand on the torso, encouraging improved stabilization—though sophisticated lifters often alternate sides between sets to maintain symmetry.

For those seeking a deeper connection with their posterior chain, the hook grip—in which the thumbs wrap under the first two fingers—provides exceptional security and allows the lifter to maintain an overhand position even at demanding weights. Though unconventional and initially uncomfortable, it is favored by Olympic lifters for its reliability and its ability to keep shoulder alignment impeccably symmetrical.

Beyond these classic approaches, luxury training programs often integrate variations like the snatchgrip deadlift, which uses a wider hand placement to intensify upper-back activation, or the trap-bar deadlift, a modern reinterpretation that shifts the load to a more joint-friendly path while still delivering impressive strength gains.

Ultimately, the deadlift endures because it reflects the very essence of intelligent fitness: efficiency, adaptability and respect for human biomechanics. In a wellness landscape crowded with trends and sales pitches, the deadlift remains timeless—an investment in strength that pays dividends in confidence, capability and the quiet satisfaction of mastering a movement that has anchored human physical strength for centuries.

Yachting

Luxury—And Freedom Too

Step aboard a charter chosen for the moment, where the journey is curated, the service flawless and the destinations irresistible.

Chartering a yacht was once considered a consolation prize for those who didn’t own one. But owning something big inevitably means it owns a piece of you, and to some extent ties you down. Maybe that’s why, in today’s rarefied circles, chartering has become a preferred approach to experiencing life at sea: an elegant blend of freedom, discretion, variety and curated indulgence that ownership struggles to match. A charter allows travelers to pursue seagoing, not maintain it. The romance of yachting lies in the glide across turquoise water, the lateafternoon champagne, the quiet moments of horizon-gazing—not necessarily in the year-round responsibility of crew management and the endless logistics of mooring, maintenance and insurance. Choosing a charter lifts the administrative weight, leaving guests with almost unalloyed pleasure.

There’s also a certain sophistication in opting for temporary perfection over permanent commitment. A charter offers access to a global fleet of vessels—sleek day cruisers, modern superyachts, classic motor yachts—each of which can be selected to match the destination and the mood. One summer might call for the Côte d’Azur; the next, a week weaving through the Greek Isles; later, a celebration in the Caribbean. Ownership fixes you to a single craft; chartering gives you a world of options.

Just as compelling is the social dynamic. Hosting friends, family members or business partners aboard a yacht you’ve chosen specifically for the moment communicates consideration, taste and intention. It frames the experience as a curated event. Guests remember that. Below are five of the world’s leading luxury charter companies and some of the curated destinations they make truly memorable.

FRASER YACHTS: THE MALDIVES

This company was created in 1947 by visionary yachtsman David Fraser in Newport Beach, California. Today, Fraser channels that heritage into bespoke charters in the Maldives: Imagine turquoise lagoons, remote coral isles and untouched atolls reached aboard sumptuous superyachts. Guests enjoy elegant staterooms, sun-drenched decks, gourmet dining and attentive crew service. Whether you’re snorkeling vibrant reefs, casting for fresh catch or watching sunsets over private sandbars, Fraser transforms the Maldives into a private, indulgent sanctuary.

INTERNATIONAL YACHT COMPANY: FRENCH POLYNESIA

Founded in 1997 and formerly known as the International Yacht Collection, IYC has grown into one of the world’s largest superyacht operators, renowned for its global reach and exacting standards. A charter with IYC transforms French Polynesia into a realm of serene luxury, from the turquoise lagoons of Tahiti and Bora Bora to the remote, pearl-lined atolls of the Tuamotus.

Guests delight in spacious decks, elegant staterooms, gourmet dining and fully crewed service— all designed to anticipate every desire. By day, dive in crystalline reefs and glide over manta-rayhosted waters; by night, drift under a sky exploding with stars.

THE MOORINGS: SARDINIA, ITALY

Since its inception in 1969 with just six 35-foot yachts in the British Virgin Islands, The Moorings has become a global charter leader. Its Sardinia offering invites guests to glide from the marina in Cannigione into the sparkling Tyrrhenian Sea, with itineraries that thread through the clear coves of the Maddalena Archipelago and along the glamorous Emerald Coast, including chic ports such as Porto Cervo and Porto Rotondo. Whether you choose a sleek catamaran or a classic monohull, each yacht promises comfortable cabins, open decks and effortless cruising. Aboard a charter by The Moorings, Sardinia becomes more than a destination; it’s a Mediterranean escape drawn with elegance and ease.

PRIVÉ FINE OCEAN CHARTERS: TURKS AND CAICOS

Born from the heritage of Waypoints Yacht Charters, Privé pairs polished, fully crewed service with sleek, modern vessels, and it turns the waters of Turks & Caicos into a private dreamscape. From the electric-blue shallows of Grace Bay to the limestone cliffs of West Caicos and the untouched beauty of French Cay, each charter becomes a guided immersion into some of the clearest seas on Earth. Expect gourmet lunches on deck, snorkels over vibrant reefs, deserted-island picnics and sunset cruising across water so luminous it borders on surreal. For pure Caribbean sophistication, nothing compares.

WINDWARD YACHTS: MONACO

Founded in 1998 on the Côte d’Azur, this company has become a discreet authority on bespoke Mediterranean chartering. Its beautifully maintained motor yachts and sailing catamarans offer serene cabins, sun-drenched decks and gracious, fully crewed service tailored to every whim. A Windward charter into Monaco means slipping straight into Riviera mythology: gliding into Port Hercules, stepping ashore for Michelin-star dining, boutique wandering or Monte Carlo nightlife, then retreating to the quiet luxury of your yacht. It’s Monaco at its most intoxicating—effortless, polished and brilliantly cinematic.

Grooming

TECH APPEAL

A gentleman’s always been smart to embrace a routine that helps him look his best. Now the tools he uses can be ‘smart’ too.

Gone are the days when a splash of aftershave and a quick trim alone could define a man’s grooming ritual. Today’s gentleman navigates a new frontier, one in which classic sophistication meets cutting-edge innovation. This isn’t vanity; it’s refinement reimagined through technology. In a world that moves at the speed of data, the modern man’s grooming routine has paradoxically become both more science and more art—quietly elevated, effortlessly intelligent and unmistakably luxurious. Three innovations help define the new era of tech-driven grooming:

• LED masks. Actor Cillian Murphy wore a demonic disguise over his face in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, but the Academy Award winner has donned a different covering as his star has risen—and he’s got emulators. LED masks, once reserved for Hollywood elite like Murphy, have become a cornerstone of the modern man’s grooming arsenal. Using therapeutic light wavelengths, these sleek, sculptural devices target everything from fine lines to post-shave irritation, delivering a polished complexion with futuristic precision. They carry skin care into a new zone—technology engineered for confidence, performance and the quiet luxury of looking impeccably composed.

• Scalp massagers. Ever been to a head spa? Hugh Jackman and Will Smith are fans, and TikTok influencers are turning the trend into a regular practice. In its simplest form, a scalp massager can resemble a brush—and be used like one too. It can make your crown feel good while exfoliating skin. But modern scalp massagers—used at home or in a head spa—combine ergonomic design with advanced vibration, heat and red-light stimulation technology. The tech helps the skin absorb products, such as shampoos and scalp oils; it’s designed to boost circulation, strengthen follicles and promote thicker, healthier hair. Sleek and discreet, scalp massagers merge grooming with mindfulness and prove that true refinement begins at the root.

• “Smart” razors. Few routines match the feelings of relaxation and indulgence of a hot towel shave, but facial grooming has evolved with the times. Shaving has entered the digital age, and leading the way are “smart” electric razors. They blend precision engineering with adaptive intelligence, using sensors to read hair density and adjust power for an impeccably smooth finish. With easier-to-hold designs, app connectivity and self-cleaning docks (no need to fumble through drawers looking for a cleaning brush), these tools turn a daily routine into a moment of refined indulgence. For the modern gentleman, the smart razor isn’t just about grooming; it’s about mastering the art of technology-driven elegance.

Has everything about male self-presentation changed? Don’t worry; there’s nothing new about the look you’re going for with these advanced devices. It isn’t exotic or robotic or bionic, and it only rhymes with tech-sy.
