ON THE COVER

In Franklin Lakes, a new-construction home is both cozy and chic thanks to interior designer Patti Smith. Photo by Sea Fleur Photography.

The view from Palisades Interstate Park provides a sense of comfort and gratitude to a young visitor.

Haven provides compassionate care for women who have experienced traumatic loss, had a history of trauma, survived abuse, and more. This comfortable 12-bed community provides a peaceful environment and stability away from triggers.

Who’s The Expert On Your Home?

If you’ve ever felt torn when retaining a designer to work on your home, join the club. Part of you wants to give the pro free reign on everything from A to Z. Another part insists, “But I want Q and X no matter what.”

Don’t worry. Both parts of you are right—and the best designers know this, as we at BERGEN are reminded with every Home Issue we publish. Designers bring to your project experience, objectivity, professional training, a practiced aesthetic eye and an insider’s awareness of where to find the best materials, furnishings and specialty services. And also the knowledge that they’re not ultimately the boss. You are—it’s your home.

The Upper Saddle River homeowners you’ll read about on page 46 confide with a laugh that “we were probably the worst clients ever.” I’m not a designer, but even I have experience enough to answer them with confidence: “Not even close.”

Still, they did show a bit of the ambivalence I’m talking about. Charging designer Laurie DiGiacomo with making their five-bedroom home “fresh, current and upscale,” they declared their firm belief in “finding your professional and letting them do their job.” Then there was some dated-looking wainscoting DiGiacomo wanted to get rid of—and the owners nixed that notion, obliging the resourceful designer to integrate the wainscoting into an updated design with the adroit use of color, texture and added molding.

There’s a yin and yang to the homeowner-designer relationship, and gifted pros are as skillful at navigating that as they are at paint-color choices or furniture placements. And it doesn’t mean they won’t push back gently on occasion. Designer Patti Smith (page 36) challenged a homeowner’s predilection for “a neutral palette” in a three-bedroom Franklin Lakes home, and the owner was glad she did. “There’s literally nothing I would change,” she now says.

Designer Diane Durocher was assigned to redo a Ramsey kitchen (page 42) for a family that remained in the house while she worked, and if that wasn’t quite like rebuilding a bus while it rolled down the highway, it was close. Happily the relationship clicked; Durocher helped the family set up a temporary kitchen in the lower-level family room and bonded with them over their love of teal. “What designer could ever turn down the opportunity to work with color?” she says.

Speaking of working, we find working on a Home Issue grounding, but home design is by no means all we cover in this magazine. Yes, our Special Report is on McMansions (page 52). But we also tell you about Easter-basket gifts (15), comedy around the county (20), allergy-season tips (16), botanical gardens you can visit (56), innovative Indian food (88), the health hazards of stress (30), tantalizing springtime dishes (58), a sculptor who’s sculpted great faces (24) and a whole alphabet of products for cheery outdoor décor (32).

Enjoy your April—out and about savoring springtime in our much-blessed county, or in that special place you call home.

BREATHE EASY

Here comes allergy season, with its sneezing, congestion and watery eyes. You probably reach for over-the-counter antihistamines to ease those symptoms and glance at the pollen count to anticipate how much you’ll need them. But that’s not the only number to check. More and more common in North Jersey are air-quality alerts, issued by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and based on the U.S. Air Quality Index (AQI), a scale used with national monitoring. These alerts let us know when specific gases and particulate matter in our air reach an unhealthy level. Breathing that air can be detrimental to your health.

What to do to prepare beforehand? Here are tips:

• Know who’s at risk. Low air quality is an extra concern for certain populations. According to the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences, children, teens, the elderly and pregnant women are at particular risk. People with lung or heart conditions or with asthma also should take special care.

• Install an air filter. An air purifier with a HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter can trap particulate matter and make the air in your home cleaner. It also will remove allergens and can help reduce those seasonal allergy symptoms.

PUPPY LOVE

Dog: Jasper, 10½-year-old goldendoodle Owners: The Leibow family of Ridgewood

After daughter Nicole’s persistent requests for a dog, parents Bob and Robin Leibow brought Jasper home in September 2015. The pup and her new family worked with a trainer, and Jasper grew into a well-behaved companion, Bob reports.

“She loves people,” he says. “Jasper is an adventurous spirit, frequently joining us on hikes and outdoor activities. She’s also fond of the mailman, Steve, who always has treats on hand for her. Her playful side shines through in her love for tug toys and her mischievous habit of sneaking tissues from the garbage.” Though situations like that can be messy, the family is forgiving. “Jasper is more than just a pet—she’s a cherished member of our family. From the moment she arrived, a tiny ball of fluff, our lives have been filled with joy, laughter and unforgettable memories.”

HOT IN THE KITCHEN

The annual Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) is one of the world’s premier stages for kitchen, bath and residential design, showcasing the latest trends and newest products. The 2026 show, held in mid-February in Orlando, Fla., featured these themes:

• Wellness gets elevated. Health-centric design is emerging as a cornerstone of luxury interiors. Magppie, making its KBIS debut, showed off “wellness kitchens” made fully of stone for safety, resilience and functionality. High-end appliance experts JennAir presented a “downdraft cooktop” that prevents odors, grease and steam from spreading beyond the kitchen.

• Statement surfaces. NJ-based Artistic Tile, which has a showroom in Paramus, showcased a new design collaboration with Canadian designer Ali Budd. It takes a bold, playful direction with natural stone, incorporating organic patterns and irregular shapes that will bring any space to life.

• Fantastic fixtures. With luxe finishes, deep colors and careful cohesion, highend bath systems and hardware turned heads. Kohler, which also has a Paramus showroom, premiered its “parallel showerhead.” With a distinctive square shape, it comes in seven different finishes and permits significant water savings.

SPRUCE UP

If you’ve caught the springtime home-improvement bug, but only a mild case—that is, you’re not up for a thorough renovation—two Bergen designers have some advice:

“Spring is the perfect time to refresh a space without the commitment of a renovation, and small changes can bring a high design impact. Don’t underestimate the power of editing! Sometimes, removing and restyling accessories can make a room feel instantly new. Start with a focus on high-impact swaps. For example, a new area rug can redefine the room and introduce a fresh style, and an oversized art piece not only creates a fresh focal point but also provides an opportunity to bring in color. Add a throw and decorative pillows in spring-inspired colors to create a cohesive color story. Consider tailored window treatments to add polish and warmth to the space.”

—Tina Guevara, Juliette Sebastian Interiors, Rutherford

“A great way to elevate your space is adding wallpaper or trim work. This can change the entire look of your room dramatically. I also recommend bringing in new colors and patterns with throw pillows and accessories. Keep in mind that, with throw pillows, you can often just order new covers. Don’t be afraid to mix metals, patterns and textures to create a more interesting look.”

FRIENDS & NEIGHBORS

SHE MAKES FACES

What do Frank Sinatra, Lucille Ball, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Pope Francis all have in common? Saddle River’s Carolyn Palmer has sculpted them all—and more.

All art relies on illusion, but in few disciplines does the trick seem as magical as in sculpture. To transform materials such as stone or metal into flowing fabric, dimpled skin or a living face takes a rare combination of skill, training and a razor-sharp eye for detail. Just ask sculptor Carolyn Palmer of Saddle River. She works in bronze, and her realistic sculptures are known for their accuracy and living energy. Frank Sinatra in Hoboken’s Sinatra Park; Popes Francis, Benedict XVI, John Paul II and Paul VI at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City; Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt at the FDR Presidential Library and Museum in Hyde Park, N.Y.—all appear nearly alive, eyes peering at the viewer. Recently Palmer unveiled a life-size figure of shoe designer Stuart Weitzman as a permanent installation at a museum in Israel and larger-thanlife sculptures on the campus of the State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate Medical University of Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, the nation’s first female physician, and Dr. Sarah Loguen Fraser, the first African American woman to graduate with a medical degree from that institution (then called Syracuse University College of Medicine).

Originally from Orange County, N.Y., Palmer now lives in Saddle River, where her home is also her studio.

What’s your earliest memory of art?

I remember being about 5 and having a passion for drawing faces. I kept asking my mother to help me, but she was overwhelmed with eight kids and didn’t have much patience for my persistence. I would go outdoors and spend hours alone, shaping faces and figures in the sandbox. Even then I was captivated by the human form.

How did you come to sculpture?

I didn’t follow a traditional path. I left for college without plans to go in that direction—yet, looking back, it feels like my steps were being quietly guided. I earned a Bachelor of Science with a minor in Studio Art from Nazareth College in Rochester, which provided a broad foundation in the visual arts. However, I feel my true education came from visiting museums and walking down city streets, studying the great masters closely and training my eye to understand how form carries emotion and life. A face is more than anatomy— there’s a story and a life behind it. I sculpt to capture that invisible essence and make it tangible. My hope is that, when someone stands before my work, they feel as though they’re truly meeting the person.

Do you have a favorite sculpture you’ve created?

Now I’m working on a bust of Pope Leo XIV for St. Patrick’s Cathedral. I’ve been inspired by how quickly he came to life. Sometimes it can be challenging to draw out a certain part of a person’s spirit, but Pope Leo appeared almost immediately.

A personal challenge you’ve overcome?

Since I was a little girl, people have told me, “Carolyn, you’re so sensitive.” For a long time, that felt like something I had to overcome. Sensitivity can be overwhelming in a world that rewards toughness. I had to learn how to live with feeling everything deeply. The challenge wasn’t becoming less sensitive; it was learning to give that sensitivity strength. Over time, what once felt like a vulnerability became one of my greatest artistic tools. That’s what allows me to see and feel the subtle shifts in expression and spirit that bring a sculpture to life. Tell us about some of your newest installations. I was so excited about creating the sculptures of Dr. Blackwell and Dr. Fraser, honoring two women

trailblazers. I couldn’t help but reflect on my own journey as a female sculptor in this traditionally maledominated field. Whenever I sculpt someone, I immerse myself in their life story. I try to step into their spirit so I can carry that energy into the clay, and eventually into bronze. Creating these extraordinary women was both humbling and transformative. As I shaped their strength, I felt them shaping mine in return.

Do you always feel that connection?

When I sculpted Eleanor Roosevelt, her spirit moved me profoundly. I hadn’t fully understood the depth of what she endured until I immersed myself in her life.

As I shaped her likeness, I felt I was honoring a strength born of hardship—a strength I’ve had to discover in my own life as well. Sculpting her became personal.

Your favorite artist?

I have many. One who stands out is Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, a 19th-century French sculptor who broke away from strict academic tradition and infused his figures with extraordinary vitality. There’s an intensity in his work, whether expressing joy or torment, that makes the sculptures feel alive.

Advice for young artists?

Technique matters, but true depth comes from observation—from really seeing people, emotion and the world around you. And don’t be afraid to feel deeply.

—Kirsten Meehan

LIFE IN AN AGE OF STRESS

A CONSTANT DIET OF WORRISOME GLOBAL HEADLINES CAN BE AN ACTUAL HEALTH HAZARD. HERE ARE SOME WAYS TO BEAT IT.

Darian Eletto, chief clinical officer of Behavioral Health Services, Bergen New Bridge Medical Center
Farzana Nanavati, M.D., neurologist, Englewood Health Physician Network

Do you find yourself taking on “the weight of the world”? These days it’s hard not to. Worry over society’s troubles, large and small, can follow us into the kitchen as we unload the dishwasher—linger in Route 4 traffic—hum quietly while we answer emails. The headlines may be global—politics, economics, climate—but the stress they generate often shows up in highly personal ways: irritability with a partner, difficulty sleeping, muscle tension or headaches.

This layering of stress is increasingly common, according to the American Psychiatric Association (APA). There is big-picture, or macro-level, stress—the strain of societal uncertainty—and then there are the routine pressures of deadlines, bills, family logistics and packed calendars. In a 2025 APA poll, more than two-thirds of respondents cited current events, personal safety and financial concerns as significant contributors to their anxiety.

“The trouble is, our nervous systems don’t always separate the two,” says Darian Eletto, a licensed professional counselor who is chief clinical officer of Behavioral Health Services at Bergen New Bridge Medical Center. “To the brain, uncertainty is uncertainty. And when it piles up, everything can start to feel urgent. Chronic uncertainty activates feelings of helplessness and fear.”

Large-scale events can feel acutely personal, even when they do not directly alter day-to-day routines. From a neurobiological standpoint, humans are wired to detect and respond to threat. When the broader social or economic environment feels unstable, the body may activate a stress response similar to that triggered by more immediate dangers. Heart rate increases. Patience diminishes. Minor inconveniences can feel disproportionate.

“Our automatic response to stress is to problemsolve,” Eletto explains. “When a stressor is outside our control, that’s when anxiety can grow and impact daily life.”

One clinical indicator that macro-level anxiety is spilling into everyday life is emotional overreaction. A routine work email may feel catastrophic. A minor household oversight may spark frustration. Continuous exposure to news cycles and social media can further amplify this response, keeping the sympathetic nervous system activated well beyond the initial trigger.

WOE IS US!

Are things worse than ever? Objectively, the answer is clearly no. Americans are deeply divided, but we wouldn’t trade places with the Civil War generation in that respect. Financial troubles afflict some of us, but not like the Great Depression. There is monstrous evil in the world, but what about the evil

our grandparents faced—and some of them died to combat—in World War II?

Still, never before have we all been so constantly bombarded with troubling reports, as a hypercompetitive media world rewards and prioritizes the shrill and alarming, while the internet and social media amplify up-to-the-minute news accounts with grievances, conspiracy theories and half-substantiated, sensational scare stories. And it’s all within quick reach on our phones.

Staying informed matters, but so does protecting our mental bandwidth.

Eletto recommends setting intentional limits to media consumption—for example, checking reputable news sources once or twice daily rather than engaging in continuous headline grazing. Designating devicefree times, such as during meals or in the hour before bed, allows the nervous system to settle, she says.

“We’re all guilty of always looking at our phones,” our expert says. “For healthy consumption of news and content, create boundaries. Put app locks and timers on your phone to limit exposure to social media and doomscrolling. Make it routine not to check your phone before bed or immediately when waking up.”

Another useful cognitive strategy involves distinguishing between concern and control. Asking, “Is this something I can directly influence?” helps clarify where energy is best directed. When the answer is no, channeling concern into small, meaningful action—volunteering locally, donating, helping a neighbor or engaging in constructive dialogue—can restore a sense of support. Perceived control is strongly associated with reduced anxiety and improved emotional regulation.

TOOLS FOR ACUTE STRESS

When stress escalates, simple physiological interventions can interrupt the cycle. Slow, paced breathing—such as inhaling for four counts and exhaling for six—activates the parasympathetic nervous system, signaling safety to the body.

Grounding exercises, such as the 5-4-3-2-1 technique, also can be effective: Try identifying five things you can see, four you can feel and three you can hear brings attention back to the present moment instead of the abstract future.

Over the long term, foundational health behaviors play a central role in resilience. Adequate sleep, regular physical movement and consistent, face-to-face social interaction expand the “window of tolerance”—the range in which individuals can experience stress without becoming overwhelmed.

“Movement doesn’t have to mean exercise,” Eletto notes. “I like to walk, but you also can

stretch, do yoga, spend five minutes petting your dog or even paint your nails. In turbulent times, five minutes of self-care and small, everyday things can play a big role.”

WHEN TO SEEK SUPPORT

While stress is a normal physiological response, persistent or escalating symptoms warrant attention. Ongoing sleep disruption (getting too much or too little sleep), irritability, social withdrawal, difficulty concentrating or recurrent physical complaints— such as headaches or gastrointestinal discomfort— may signal that additional support is beneficial.

“Migraines can be triggered by stress and the accompanying lack of sleep,” says Farzana Nanavati, M.D., a neurologist with the Englewood Health Physician Network. “And when stress headaches are frequent, they can lead to increased anxiety, depression, irritability and even subtle brain changes that affect thinking and processing speed.” The good news, the doctor says, is stress can be treated through therapy, and most headaches can be treated with over-the-counter painkillers.

Seeking therapy is not an indication of inadequacy; it is a preventive health measure, Eletto says. “Family and friends are valuable supports,” she goes on. “But if stress begins to impair day-to-day functions, professional guidance can help. Therapy is good even when things feel good. There is no wrong time to prioritize mental health.”

Ironically, stress often prompts withdrawal, even though social connection is one of the strongest buffers against anxiety. Reaching out need not be elaborate. A brief walk, a phone call or a shared cup of coffee can reinforce stability and belonging.

“Humans have a biological need for connection,” Eletto says. “Maintaining open communication with even a small core group can be profoundly protective. Pick up the phone and call instead of texting.”

Community engagement—particularly helping others—also reinforces purpose, which improves psychological well-being, according to the American Journal of Public Health

The broader world may remain unpredictable. However, individual routines and interpersonal interactions still offer opportunities for regulation and steadiness. While we cannot control every headline, we can influence how we respond, Eletto says.

“Resilience isn’t about ignoring stress,” she says. “It’s about handling it, and creating moments of predictability and connection that mitigate the impact of larger uncertainties.”

COZY AND CHIC

Faced with what seemed a choice between elegance and comfort, the designer of a new-construction Franklin Lakes home answered: “Yes to both!”

Design by Patti Smith, P. Smith Design

Can elegance coexist with coziness and glamour be achieved without any fuss? Can modern design exude warmth?

Ridgewood designer Patti Smith answered an emphatic “yes” on all counts as she infused her vision from the get-go into a three-bedroom coach home under construction at the Reserve at Franklin Lakes. This Toll Brothers luxury setting represented a new start for the homeowners.

What at first blush may have seemed like a dichotomy of styles—comfort and elegance, for instance—inspired a home one of the clients described as so “beautiful” it dazzled

With 5-foot-tall artwork and a pop from a watermark pillow, the living room in this three-bedroom Franklin Lakes home shows how designer Patti Smith coaxed one of the homeowners out of her comfort zone and into a world alive with color and tastefully glamorous accessories.

wedding guests. “We had a small wedding at the house, and all we kept hearing was, ‘Wow, this could be a wedding venue!’” this homeowner recalls.

With confidence gained from a prior project with Smith, the homeowners knew their individual tastes were within reach—that even glamour could be reined in to suit their tailored style. “There was no question that if I couldn’t work with Patti, I was going to be in trouble,” this homeowner says. “Patti also brought me out of a little bit of my neutral palette,” she adds, noting how decorative accessories, color and artwork “hold the room together.”

That sensibility shines in the living room, which seems just right for either a family gathering or a laid-back movie night. The room’s Taylor King sectional in polyester velvet delivers a plush yet durable look and takes center stage whenever it’s time to relax. “Very cool” is how Smith describes the cocktail table from Century, featuring polished-nickel blades for style and support.

Within toasty range of a sleek porcelain fireplace, another sitting area with an oyster swivel chair and an ottoman excites a wow with a watermark velvet pillow and modern sculpture. As the homeowner explains, artwork is a dominant force in this design, and at 5 feet tall, the room’s 3D floral oil painting certainly makes the case. More subtle is the Arabella pattern on Stanton carpet blanketing wood floors.

No matter where in the room one might cozy up, the couple’s

treasured piano is within earshot, ready to entertain with or without a human. Completing the scene, sheer Romo window treatments are treated to polished-nickel French hardware from Houlès.

Because it’s highly visible from the entry foyer, the dining room needed to “make a statement,” Smith says, so she introduced a hexagonal, crushed-glass chandelier by Hammerton Studio for the perfect dash of glam. Another highlight is the oversized landscape above an ombré-front credenza with an open steel frame, both by John-Richard. Besides connecting the room’s colors, it creates what Smith calls “a nice, soothing atmosphere,” without competition from Stanton’s strie-pattern carpet in shades of pearl and gray.

Not forsaking comfort, the dining area itself has a practical side. The coffee-stain table by Old Biscayne expands for guests, and Jessica Charles chairs tackle spills with a wipe thanks to pearly vinyl interiors, married to a silk blend exterior.

“Vinyl has come a long way,” Smith says. “People assume it’s leather.”

The primary bedroom just may be the homeowner’s favorite part of a design that covers every detail, every room—from finished basement to

outdoor furniture and closets. “It’s a cozy, elegant, beautiful bedroom,” she says, with a shoutout to the pièce de résistance—a three-dimensional, silver-leaf cabinet from Lily Koo. “It’s glamorous without all the curves and curls and fussiness,” adds Smith.

For “understated glam that fits in with the cabinets,” the designer points to the supersized canvas in the sitting area with gold pieces of glass by John-Richard. A swivel oyster velvet chair by Vanguard with a gunmetal-base ottoman by Interlude Home beckons weary feet.

Almost guaranteeing sweet dreams, the Interlude Home bed welcomes a channeled velvet headboard big on elegance and a blush-color bench floating on a nickel base. Espresso wood provides rich contrast in Century’s side tables adorned with crystal lamps. As a finishing touch, window treatments combine sheer fabric from Germany with French hardware.

“There’s literally nothing I would change,” says this happy homeowner. “We’re definitely very grateful to have had Patti’s eye and vision, and her team as well. If I had another home, I would do it again.”

ISLAND IN THE STORM

A busy Ramsey family took advantage of ample floor space in a 1970s home to make their kitchen more functional and fun.

Design by Diane Durocher

It wasn’t news to Diane Durocher that home renovations inescapably cause disruption. “Kitchen renovations are often the most disruptive of all,” says the lead designer of Ramsey-based Diane Durocher Interiors. Complicating matters further in a recent Ramsey kitchen redo was that the homeowners—a young couple with two children and two cats—lived in the house for the duration of the project, which began in early November 2024 and was completed in July 2025.

“To make it manageable, they set up a temporary kitchen area in the lower-level family room,” Durocher says. Shifting the family downstairs allowed Durocher, working with New York- and Florida-based contractor Deco Builders, to focus on refreshing the heart of the home, located in a neighborhood known for its 1970s vintage and natural, woodsy setting.

“The outdated kitchen and original floor plan failed to take full advantage of the generous square footage the space

In a Ramsey home, a kitchen redesign permits smarter use of abundant space. Pops of teal add splash to rich, walnut cabinetry by Rafael Designs, topped by quartz countertops in Calacatta Aylo from Stone by Vincenzo. An island takes center stage with ribbing that echoes the home’s midcentury modern roots, while a newly installed ceiling beam anchors additional lighting. Rounded contours help provide functional family space for eating and socializing, with stools and pendant lamps from AllModern.

offered,” says the designer. “We reimagined a more comprehensive floor plan centered around a large island that maximizes functionality, storage and gathering space.”

A creative bonus for Durocher: The couple loved teal. “What designer could ever turn down the opportunity to work with color?” she says. Upper-perimeter cabinetry was painted Benjamin Moore Sherwood Forest—a bold, saturated hue that contrasts with the warmth of new walnut cabinetry. The goal? A look that would be “stunning, modern and truly unique,”

Durocher says.

The island’s curved, reeded design echoes the home’s midcentury modern roots while adding storage, seating and work space. An island cooktop with an integrated downdraft fan offers uninterrupted views of the living room, dining room and backyard, allowing cooks to socialize while preparing food. State-of-the-art appliances include two dishwashers and a French-door wall oven. A newly constructed wooden beam anchors pendant lighting.

In a nearby corner, a two-tiered wall unit provides a dedicated beverage-and-coffee bar with integrated refrigerator drawers and an ice maker. The unit’s additional drawers and side cabinet afford space for supplies such as coffee pods and cups.

Durocher is grateful for her clients’ “kindness, understanding and incredible patience,” she says, adding that the inconvenience appears to have been worth it: “They love their new kitchen!”

This page: Strategically positioning the cooktop to face other rooms invites conversation while preparing food. The utilitarian island, with Top Knobs hardware, provides plenty of storage. Opposite: A dedicated coffee-and-drinks bar gets its own corner space, with refrigerator drawers and ample places to store items like coffee pods and mugs.

SCORING A WIN

The first floor of an Upper Saddle River home is transformed into a customized, elevated haven after years of heavy use.

Design by Laurie DiGiacomo

Text by Richard Laliberte

Allisen Graves takes a utilitarian approach to her family’s abode in Upper Saddle River. “It’s not a museum,” she says. “We use it.” Ten years after a structural renovation in which they essentially rebuilt the house they’d bought in 2008, the interior of the five-bedroom home needed a major refresh, due not only to tired style but also to heavy wear and tear—both her 16-year-old daughter and her 14-year-old son play hockey at elite levels and sometimes practice indoors.

“The interior was very suburban and safe, with soft colors and traditional patterns,” says Laurie DiGiacomo, owner and principal designer at Laurie DiGiacomo Interiors,

The well-worn family room in this Upper Saddle River home was revitalized with showstopping elements including a custom-designed fireplace. Topping a mantel of mitered porcelain from Custom Stone by Frank in Park Ridge, an antique-finished mirror extends from the mantel to the ceiling in a dramatic, organically shaped strip by Artique Glass Studio in Glen Rock and Faux Time Design in Hillsdale.

This page and opposite: Dining-room furnishings from Vanguard Furniture featuring a mix of soft lines and patterns balance metallic finishes and dramatic light fixtures from Hudson Valley Lighting. Throughout the three-room project, designer Laurie DiGiacomo sought a mix of feminine and masculine touches for a hockeyloving family evenly split between the sexes.

based in Ridgewood. “We wanted something fresh, current and upscale.”

Graves and her husband, who both work in finance, didn’t know where to start. “We were probably the worst clients ever,” Graves says with a laugh. “We just said we didn’t want the design to be super-traditional or really modern. I’m a big proponent of finding your professional and letting them do their job. That’s why we hired Laurie—to let her figure it out. You have to trust your designer, which we did with her.”

Graves had found DiGiacomo’s work online. “I’d say my style is modern luxe influenced by hotel design, travel and unique materials,” DiGiacomo says. “I have a modern edge but enjoy timelessness as well.” A good working relationship developed quickly. DiGiacomo impressed Graves with her businesslike approach. Shared connections with friends and family added a level of comfort. “And I just liked her personally,” Graves says.

The first-floor project, completed in early 2026, encompassed a family room, a dining room and an office where Graves and her husband regularly work. Longer-term foyer and kitchen projects weren’t included. “When doing multiple—but not all—rooms, you need a thread of continuity to have the

remade rooms speak not only to each other but also to the rooms you haven’t worked on,” DiGiacomo says.

The designer established a color palette with the dining room and office, visible when entering the house. A challenge immediately arose: Both spaces featured wainscoting that DiGiacomo considered dated and wanted to rip out. Removing it would expose unstained wood flooring next to the wall. “I didn’t want to redo all the floors for the sake of two inches of stain,” Graves says. “The thought of that made me want to cry.”

“We had to change up some design elements due to how the house was built,” DiGiacomo says. She integrated the existing wainscoting into the design through elements such as color, texture and added molding.

In the dining room, DiGiacomo chose a warm color palette leaning toward taupe and brown, with textured wallpaper and congruent patterns in drapes and dining chairs. A large ceiling light fixture extends horizontally to fully illuminate a large table. Disc-shaped, metallic wall sconces and brass drapery rails complement the showstopping fixture.

In the office, color drenching of new molding and existing cabinetry as

well as walls, ceiling and doors creates visual drama. Reworked shelving offers cubby-like partitions backed by graphic, modern floral wallpaper. Starburst hardware and leather pulls on cabinetry provide punctuation marks that also help achieve the balance of femininity and masculinity that DiGiacomo strove for throughout the house.

“The graphic wallpaper and light fixture in the office lean more feminine, while the art piece with a plane and propeller bring a masculine touch,” DiGiacomo says. Furniture selections in all rooms—office desk and swivel chair; dining-room table and chairs; and family-room sofa and chairs—feature curves that provide softness balanced by strong touches, including a custom, family-room fireplace with a hard-edged mantel of marble-like mitered porcelain.

“Redoing the fireplace changed the whole room,” DiGiacomo says. An antique-finished mirror extends from the mantle to the ceiling in a dramatic, organically shaped strip. Completing the fireplace and custom wall took a year and three artisans: Custom Stone by Frank in Park Ridge, Artique Glass Studio in Glen Rock and Faux Time Design in Hillsdale.

“Laurie’s work is custom, unique and beautiful,” Graves says. “My daughter says, ‘I feel like I’m living in a magazine.’ That wasn’t the case before.”

This page and opposite: Color drenching of the office—along with the transformation of standard shelving into cubby-like partitions backed by patterned wallpaper from Thibaut—punches up the impact of existing cabinetry. Updated hardware from Modern Matter and an aviationthemed piece from Leftbank Art add further masculine elements to balance more feminine-feel features such as rounded forms in furniture and lighting.

Special Report

THE McMANSION LIVES ON

No longer a hot trend in real-estate construction, the much-maligned architectural style survives in existing homes that often sell quite well.

The house sits grandly on its corner lot in Englewood Cliffs, its multiple wings facing southeast, east and north like suburban sentinels. Its windows are Palladian; its façade is multicolored brick; its double-height entryway is framed by an ornate concrete arch. Inside, there are 3,600 square feet containing six bedrooms and an equal number of baths, a great room yawning beneath a soaring ceiling and a gleaming “gourmet” kitchen. It is the quintessential McMansion, a style that dominated new builds in America’s suburbs starting in the 1980s and whose demise has regularly been announced for at least the past quarter century.

Merriam-Webster defines “McMansion” as “a very large house built in usually a suburban neighborhood or development, especially one regarded critically as oversized and ostentatious.” Coined sometime in the 1980s, the term is rarely used in any but a pejorative sense; you’re not likely to hear a homeowner brag about “our gorgeous new McMansion.” (A McMansion, after all, is to an actual mansion what a Big Mac

is to a ribeye at Peter Luger.) Critics of McMansions listed among their chief flaws poor construction and a lack of architectural coherence, the former a result of maximizing interior space while minimizing cost per square foot. They also bemoaned the concomitant shrinkage of outdoor space to accommodate all that interior square footage. And many simply focused on their size, stating, in essence, that the houses were gratuitously large and put unnecessary stress on the environment with their oversize heating and cooling requirements.

Nevertheless, McMansions proliferated. They certainly did in Bergen County, which has been cited as prime McMansion territory by sources as disparate as CNBC, the digital publication Bored Panda and the website McMansion Hell. They offered what many buyers prioritized: the look of luxury; an airy, open-plan layout; and lots and lots of square footage.

Of all the benefits conferred by the McMansion, that square footage was likely the most desirable, reflecting a booming economy. “The

economy as a whole had a much higher level of circulating capital— everybody was making money. And where housing was concerned, bigger was definitely better,” says Taylor Lucyk, founder of the Taylor Lucyk Group in Paramus at Christie’s International Real Estate. The typical American house in 1950 measured 983 square feet. That number steadily climbed and by 1970 had grown to 1,500 square feet. Even as American families were becoming smaller, their need for space was increasing (in part because they owned more stuff than ever before), and McMansions—typically 3,000 to 6,000 square feet— satisfied that need and then some.

To an extent, they’re still doing that—enough so that one wonders if reports of their demise have been, as Mark Twain famously wrote of his own, “greatly exaggerated.” In fact, Melissa Rubenstein, a real estate associate at Corcoran Infinity Properties in Ridgewood, says so-called McMansions are absolutely still selling, sometimes after heated bidding wars, and the most prominent reason for that continues to be space. Many of the news reports proclaiming that McMansions were on the way out cited a trend toward smaller, more energy-efficient homes. But the stats muddle that story: Last year, the website Real Estate News noted that the average square footage of new houses in the U.S., after a slight dip in 2023, actually increased in the last quarter of 2024. Builders may be betting on a decline in interest rates, which could rekindle the lust for larger houses.

The majority of buyers in Bergen County, Rubenstein notes, are still prioritizing space. And Bergen buyers who want 3,000-plus square feet will likely have to pay $2 million or more for new construction, thanks in part to tariffs and inflation; they’ll pay considerably less—say, $599,000 to $1.5 million depending on location and other factors—for older houses such as traditional colonials, ranches and split-levels, built in the ’60s, ’70s or ’80s, but they probably won’t find the square footage they seek. They’re also unlikely to find the open floor plans and double-height entryways Rubenstein says many buyers still want. So those buyers’ best options continue to be McMansions.

the National Association of Realtors, those features include quartz or engineered stone countertops, Energy Star windows, a walk-in pantry, table space in the kitchen, beamed ceilings, a full bath on the main level and outdoor kitchens.

“People are more thoughtful and intentional about how space is used,” says Plawker, noting as an example that while some buyers still seek grand foyers, others are starting to view them as a poor use of space.

Perhaps the biggest change in new builds is a stylistic one. According to Rubenstein, most newly constructed homes in Bergen are designed in the modern farmhouse style, characterized by clean lines, simple facades and a color scheme that favors white with black, brown with black, gray with black, and occasionally, black with black. While these houses may feature more harmonious exteriors and more intentional features, space is still their main draw—which explains why some architectural critics are referring to them as “McModerns” (a term originally coined to describe sprawling new homes in the sleek midcentury modern style).

“I’m seeing every demographic, every age, but I’d say those with young families are probably the most likely to buy [a McMansion] because those are the buyers with the greatest need for space.”
—Melissa Rubenstein, real estate associate, Corcoran Infinity Properties, Ridgewood

“I’m seeing every demographic, every age,” Rubenstein says of typical buyers, “but I’d say those with young families are probably the most likely to buy them because those are the buyers with the greatest need for space.” Barri Plawker, a Realtor-associate with Howard Hanna Rand Realty in Englewood Cliffs, says most of the McMansions she sells go to multigenerational families, “who see the value in the space.”

Still, for Bergen County buyers who can afford them, new builds are in greater demand than McMansions of any size. “I’m not saying people don’t want large homes—they do,” says Plawker. “But I think they want those homes to fit needs more than they want them to just be big.”

“I’ve actually seen more buyers choose slightly smaller homes with higher-end finishes and features over massive square footage,” says Ralph DiBugnara, a mortgage broker in Fort Lee and president of the real-estate website Home Qualified. According to a recent study by

But if you search the listings for new construction in Bergen, you’ll find what appears to be a hybrid of the McMansion and the McModern. These houses may include modern farmhouse mainstays like black casement windows, black on white exterior color schemes, and tin roof accents, many they also feature quintessential McMansion touches such as towers, arched Palladian-style windows, and wildly contrasting rooflines; interiors often include great rooms with double-height ceilings. And many of them are big. Really big. Nine bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, four-car garage big. An argument could be made that some of these new builds are really McMansions in McModern clothing.

Clearly, many Bergen buyers continue to want that McMansion combination of imposing exterior and wide, open interior space. Here, a wealthier buyer pool is competing for a limited inventory of houses on the market. Older buyers elsewhere may be downsizing, but in Bergen that doesn’t make economic sense. Rubenstein notes that “so many people here are locked into interest rates below 4 percent, so even if they were to downsize, by the time you factor in a 6 percent mortgage rate and the fact that prices have gone up on average 50 percent since the pandemic, they’re not saving anything.” While townhome developments—usually an attractive option for downsizers—are going up throughout the county, says Rubenstein, “the new townhouses are all well over $1 million, and the homeowner association fees have gone crazy.” The difficulty of downsizing here contributes directly to the tightness of Bergen’s housing market, which, in turn, is helping to boost sales of the county’s stock of McMansions.

It’s not impossible, of course, to imagine a day when buyers tear down their old McMansions to replace them with McModerns—or whatever style of home is ascendant at the time. As DiBugnara observes, “Bigger isn’t dead here. It just has to make sense.” And sense, it appears, remains in the eye of the beholder. Remember that corner-lot McMansion in Englewood Cliffs? It sold last year after just five days on the market—for 13 percent above the asking price.

FLOWER POWER

Why not celebrate springtime—and behold beauty—by visiting a botanical garden?

Spring is always joyous, but let’s be honest: This one is a particular relief, after an unusually cold winter and lots of stubborn, lingering snow. We’ve never been more ready to enjoy the sunshine, step into the warming air and celebrate new growth and outdoor beauty—and where better to do that than a garden?

You may already be plotting out colors and picking annuals for your own spring planting and landscaping, or planning a visit to one of our scenic local parks. But you also can venture out of Bergen County and check out one of our area’s celebrated botanical and formal gardens. Happily, these five are within a short drive:

NEW YORK BOTANICAL GARDEN, NEW YORK, N.Y.

Within one of the most famous urban landscapes in the country is this cultivated oasis, which bills itself as a “plant museum, a center for learning and a plant science leader.” Located in the Bronx, it’s about a half hour’s drive from Bergen, if you don’t hit traffic (but we all know you should plan for traffic). The garden boasts roughly 250 acres, and at its heart is the Thain Family Forest, one of the last existing remnants of the original woodland that covered what is now New York City before the arrival of European settlers. Its trees are centuries old. In the spring, of course, crab apple and cherry trees are in full pink splendor, but don’t skip out on the stunning ornamental conifers, which take on a yellow-green hue this time of year. The indoor Enid A. Haupt Conservatory also gathers plants from all around the world. On display now? “The Orchid Show: Mr. Flower Fantastic’s Concrete Jungle,” in which orchids collide with concrete in a dazzling display that reimagines the Big Apple. Beyond the blooms. NYBG offers near-constant events and programming, so there’s always something to do or something new to learn. Keep an eye out for lectures and Q&As from orchid experts throughout April, in addition to book talks, guided walks and guest speakers. Outside the garden, you’re a stone’s throw from Arthur Avenue’s famous Little Italy for incredible food, history and culture (including Mario’s, considered the oldest continuously operating restaurant in the Bronx). For even more nature, you’re minutes away from the Bronx Zoo, filled with animals from near and far. More information: nybg.org

NEW JERSEY BOTANICAL GARDEN, RINGWOOD, N.J.

In Ringwood State Park, about 40 minutes from Bergen, you’ll find the Garden State’s official botanical garden. Originally part of the historic Skylands estate, NY Botanical Gardens trustee Clarence MacKenzie Lewis purchased the site in 1922 as his summer home. The facility was commissioned in 1984, and today includes 96 acres of beautifully curated flowers for you to explore as you wander. The stunning Italianate Gardens is a must-see, with an octagon pool topped with classically inspired statues surrounded by a “magnolia walk,” which is lined with sweet bay magnolias that don’t usually thrive this far north. Other spring standouts include the lilac gardens, filled with the sweet smells of those blooms, and the Crab Apple Allée, which comes to life in the spring.

Beyond the blooms. Outdoor pleasures take center stage, and what a time to enjoy them— Ringwood State Park is filled with sights and sounds of the season. Easy, family-friendly hikes can take you past babbling brooks, serene lakes and budding trees (make sure you pause for photo ops). If historical buildings capture your imagination, stop by the gardens on select Sundays to tour the interior of the 44-guest room, Tudor Revival Skylands Manor, guided by an expert. For the more adventurous, the nearby Monksville Reservoir is a popular spot for kayaking. A bite to eat to close out your day? Try Artemio’s Prime and Proper for white-tablecloth Italian elegance, or the retro Lakeside Diner for more casual fare. More information: njbg.org

UNTERMYER GARDENS, YONKERS, N.Y.

Once part of lawyer and civic leader Samuel Untermyer’s estate, this 43-acre space is truly transportive, known for an Indo-Persian-inspired design that includes a walled garden, an open-air amphitheater and Ionic columns. It’s about 40 minutes from Bergen, and its location offers even more of a visual feast—it’s situated on a steep bank overlooking the Hudson, with fantastic views of the river and the Palisades. The gardens had fallen into disrepair until a restoration project started in 2011 returned them to their former glory. Stroll the blooming rhododendron walk or take in the “Temple of Love,” an extended rock garden with terraced beds topped with a round temple. Beyond the blooms. If seeing the gardens has you craving the full estate experience, head to nearby Tarrytown and check out the Lyndhurst Mansion, a Gothic Revival country house filled with Gilded Age glamour and local history. (The annual Spring Crafts Market with more than 200 artisans and craftsmen kicks off May 1.) Stop by the Hudson River Museum on weekends and be transported out of this world with planetarium shows that show off our solar system. Want dinner with a view? Stop by Harvest on Hudson for Mediterranean fare and waterfront dining that faces the sunset. More information: untermyergardens.org

ELIZABETH PARK CONSERVANCY, HARTFORD, CONN.

About two hours from Bergen, the 102 acres of these grounds and formal gardens, open to the public since 1897, are known for the early spring greenhouse shows. Here you’ll also find the Helen S. Kaman Rose Garden, America’s oldest municipal rose garden. Though those blooms won’t reach their full majesty until June, you’ll find much to love in the meantime—bright yellow daffodils bring the formal gardens to life, and the Robert A. Prill Tulip Garden features more than 11,000 of those flowers in every color of the rainbow. The perennial garden features a sprawling pergola where you can catch some shade, and the Sunrise Overlook and East Lawn sits on one of the highest peaks in Hartford, offering a stunning view of the city, the trees and the flowers in harmony.

Beyond the blooms. Rich in history and landmarks and with a thriving food culture, Connecticut’s capital offers much to explore. To sharpen your acquaintance with perhaps America’s greatest author, The Mark Twain House & Museum is a must. (And there are grounds and gardens to explore there too, if you’re itching for more horticulture.) Also worth a visit is the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, which has extensive collections of European Baroque and ancient Egyptian pieces. For a unique food experience, West Hartford’s GastroPark is an indoor/outdoor experience that merges an everchanging spread of food trucks with a top-notch selection of cocktails, craft beer and wine for a sampling of Hartford’s best. LONGWOOD GARDENS, KENNETT SQUARE, PA.

Approximately two-and-a-half hours from Bergen is a garden that should be on every horticultural enthusiast’s bucket list. Sprawling over 1,100 acres, it’s filled with both indoor and outdoor attractions—something is always in full bloom at Longwood. The 12,500-squarefoot Bonsai Courtyard, filled with beautiful trees, is a sight in the spring months, filled with pink cherry blossoms and azaleas. The Large and Small Lake gardens are lined with bright daffodils and new greenery. The Italian Water Garden is an ode to architecture and symmetry, with 600 water jets and views of six pools and 12 pedestal basins. For a less formal experience, see the Meadow Garden, with expansive vistas and sweeps of stunning native plants, all coming to life in the April sunshine. Beyond the blooms. Longwood also offers many classes and hands-on experiences, all carefully curated to the season. On April 18, for instance, learn about (and maybe catch a glimpse of) migrating birds and hear a lecture on spring foraging and local edible plants. Outside of the garden, Kennett Square is a lively suburb with much of the vibe of nearby Philadelphia without the city’s frenetic pace. Every other Friday, the Kennett Square Farmers Market comes alive, rain or shine, filled with local goods, farmers and artisans. Also close is Braeloch Brewing, a bustling local taproom and craft brewery with an industrial aesthetic and an expansive menu of both food and sips. (Particularly tempting and popular are the slushies made with house hard lemonade.)

TASTES

Surprise Inside

These dishes are stuffed, flavorful and impossible to resist. Who knew spring produce could be this indulgent?

LEMON RICOTTA ASPARAGUS RAVIOLI

Yields 6 servings

INGREDIENTS

1 bunch asparagus, ends trimmed

1 cup fresh basil

1 cup whole milk ricotta cheese

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1/4 cup roasted pistachios, shelled juice and zest of 2 lemons kosher salt and pepper

40-50 circle or square wonton wrappers

White Wine Butter Sauce

4 Tbs. salted butter

2 Tbs. chives, chopped

1 Tbs. fresh thyme, chopped

1/2 cup white wine or chicken broth

1 cup low sodium chicken broth pinch of crushed red pepper

DIRECTIONS

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the asparagus and blanch until just tender, about 1-2 minutes. Drain and rinse under cold water.

In a food processor, combine 3/4 of the asparagus (reserve the remaining for serving), the basil, ricotta, parmesan, pistachios, lemon zest and juice, and a pinch each of salt and pepper. Pulse until combined and smooth.

Lay out about 6 wrappers. Spoon 1 tablespoon of filling into the center of each wrapper. Brush the edges with water. Lay a second wrapper on top of each ravioli. Press down the edges to seal, pressing out all the air. Crimp the edges with a fork. Alternately you can create triangles with the square wrappers if desired. Be sure to keep the raviolis covered as you work to prevent them from drying out.

To make the butter sauce: In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chives and thyme and cook 30 seconds to a minute or until fragrant. Pour in the wine and chicken broth and bring to a boil. Season with salt and pepper and a pinch of crushed red pepper. Cook 5 minutes or until the sauce has reduced slightly.

Meanwhile, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Boil the ravioli in batches for 1-2 minutes or until they float. Drain.

Divide the ravioli among bowls and ladle the sauce over the ravioli. Top with the remaining asparagus.

“You

can swap the whole milk ricotta for a part-skim option to reduce the saturated fat content. For a more heart-healthy balance, cut back on the butter and add olive oil instead. Add more fiber to this dish by putting white beans or spinach into the filling, and use pumpkin seeds instead of pistachios for a nut-free option.”

CREAMY BACON TORTELLINI WITH CHARRED BROCCOLI

Yields 6 servings

1 lb. fresh cheese tortellini

4 thick-cut slices bacon, chopped

2 Tbs. extra-virgin olive oil

2 cups broccoli florets, roughly chopped kosher salt and black pepper

4 Tbs. salted butter

3 cloves garlic, minced or grated

1 Tbs. fresh oregano (or 1 tsp. dried oregano), chopped

1 Tbs. fresh thyme (or 1 tsp. dried thyme), chopped

1 pinch crushed red pepper flakes

¹/³ cup dry white wine, such as Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc (or chicken broth)

1 cup heavy cream or canned full-fat coconut milk

4 oz. cream cheese, room temperature

1 cup Parmesan cheese, grated

DIRECTIONS

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the tortellini according to package directions until al dente. Drain.

Meanwhile, cook the bacon in a large skillet over medium heat until crisp. Drain onto a paper towel. Add the broccoli and season with salt and pepper. Cook until the broccoli is crisping on the edges, 3 to 4 minutes. Toss the broccoli, add the olive oil and cook another 2-3 minutes, until crisp. Remove the broccoli from the skillet to a plate.

In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat, cooking until the butter begins to brown, about 3-4 minutes. Reduce the heat to low, add the garlic, oregano, thyme and a pinch of crushed red pepper. Cook one minute, then pour in the wine. Simmer 2-3 minutes. Add the cream and cream cheese. Whisk until smooth. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer and cook 5 minutes, until thickened slightly. Stir in the Parmesan. Season with salt and pepper. Toss in the tortellini and cook 2-3 minutes, then remove from the heat.

Divide the tortellini between plates and top with charred broccoli and bacon. Eat and enjoy immediately.

“Charred broccoli delivers fiber and powerful phytonutrients that complement the heavier cream sauce and bacon in this dish. Swapping in turkey bacon and using half-and-half or coconut milk instead of heavy cream reduces

saturated fat while keeping the dish satisfyingly rich. Choosing wholewheat tortellini would further boost the overall nutrition.”

SHAKE IT UP!

Toast to longer days and sunnier moods with this refreshing, herb-kissed sip.

CUCUMBER GIN FIZZ

Makes: 2 servings

INGREDIENTS

4 oz. cucumber infused gin

2 oz. triple sec

soda water

2 cucumber ice cubes

2 slices of cucumber, for garnish

DIRECTIONS

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice, add the cucumber infused gin and triple sec and shake for 10 seconds. Pour into a chilled martini glass. Add a cucumber ice cube and top up with soda water. Garnish with a slice of cucumber.

“For a subtle twist, add an ounce of freshly squeezed lemon or lime juice to the recipe. Lemon is a traditional choice for a gin fizz, but either fruit will give the drink a citrusy zest that pairs nicely with cucumber.”

BERGEN COUNTY’S

2026 TOP REAL ESTATE AGENTS

BERGEN COUNTY’S TOP REAL ESTATE AGENTS

BERGEN COUNTY IS HOME TO SOME OF THE MOST SEASONED AND TALENTED REAL ESTATE PROFESSIONALS IN THE COUNTRY.

To help readers find the best agents to work with, Bergen magazine contracted DataJoe Research of Boulder, Colorado to facilitate a multi-faceted research campaign. It consisted of an online survey delivered directly to agents across Bergen County via email as well as internet research. In the survey, real estate agents were asked to provide sales volume ranges and also nominate their peers. In the Internet campaign, DataJoe consulted a variety of websites to build richer knowledge of individual licensed real estate agents across the county.

DataJoe checked and confirmed that each published winner had, at the time of review, a current, active license status with the appropriate state regulatory board. If they were not able to find evidence of a real estate agent’s current, active registration with the state regulatory board, that real estate agent was excluded from the list. Finally, DataJoe presented the tallied results to Bergen magazine for final review.

We recognize that there are many good real estate agents who are not shown on the representative list. This is only a sampling of the huge array of talented professionals within the county.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

An Unexpected Spice

Lodi’s newest Indian eatery, Haveli, creates a dining experience that’s celebratory, comforting—and satisfying.

My foodie friends and I have eaten our way through Indian restaurants all over Bergen County—from cozy spots to longtime favorites—always hunting for that next great meal. But when my girlfriend and I found ourselves looking for something a little different, our journey led us beyond the county’s popular culinary destinations and into Lodi. And just when we thought we knew what to expect, we stumbled on Haveli, a recently opened restaurant that specializes in familiar meaty dishes, such as chicken tikka masala and lamb vindaloo, as well as under-the-radar vegetarian offerings.

Right from the start, Haveli felt inviting and fresh, like discovering a hidden gem in your own neighborhood. On a Friday night, the vibe shifts into something extra—mood lighting and a lively, club-like atmosphere where regulars pop in throughout the evening to hang out with the owners and grab a few quick bites. You feel as if you’ve stepped into a friendly gathering, not just a restaurant.

We kicked things off by sharing some appetizers that instantly woke up our taste buds. The mango avocado bhel was a total palate pleaser—a vibrant mix of puffed rice, peanuts, crisp vegetables, creamy avocado and sweet, juicy mango, all tied together with tangy chutneys and a gentle hint of spice. Each bite was a symphony of textures and flavors, crunchy and creamy, sweet and zesty, that made it impossible not to linger over the dish and keep going back for “just one more” bite. Our server was surprised we finished the entire bowl so quickly. We were not.

Then came the dahi puri, which was pure fun to eat. Those crisp little puris (fried dough balls made from wheat flour) crackled as we bit into them, releasing cool yogurt, spiced potatoes and chutneys that danced between sweet and savory. It’s playful, a little messy and totally worth it. If you haven’t tried dahi puri before, Haveli’s

version is a great introduction. (My tip: Unless you don’t mind yogurt on your hands and face, pop a whole puri into your mouth instead of biting into it.)

For our main courses, my girlfriend and I split things up—one vegetarian classic and one seafood surprise. The aloo gobi hit all the right notes: tender potatoes and cauliflower coated in curry with gentle, warming spices. It felt like a comforting hug on a plate, familiar but perfectly done.

But the real showstopper was the salmon kasundi from the clay oven menu. The grilled salmon was flaky and cooked just right, marinated with a mustardy kasundi sauce that had a nice punch without overpowering the fish. Bold and flavorful, the dish was a welcome twist on typical grilled salmon dishes (soy sauce, lemon juice and garlic) that we make at home.

In addition to a heaping serving of basmati rice, we had an order of garlic naan on the side. Instead of thick and pillowy, the bread was thin and crisp. While the pungent garlic flavor was on point, the naan was a tad too buttery and greasy for my taste.

We finished the night with gajar halwa, a traditional carrot pudding. With eyes closed, one might mistake it for rice pudding—it was warm, sweet and just rich enough to feel like a special treat without weighing us down. It was the perfect way to end a meal that balanced comforting favorites with exciting new flavors.

If you’ve been rotating through the usual Indian restaurants in Bergen County as we have, Haveli makes a compelling case for changing up the routine. It delivers a fresh perspective and a reminder that great food discoveries sometimes take you off your usual path. Haveli is exactly that kind of find.

A BERGEN MOMENT

“I was meeting a close friend at Palisades Interstate Park. We hadn’t seen each other in three years, and we spent the whole day walking and catching up. I recently moved to the area from Toronto, and I’ve been really nervous about it because I don’t know anyone around here except this friend. Stumbling upon such a beautiful scene reminded me that even during uncertain times, life has a way of offering unexpected beauty. Standing there, taking in the view, I felt a quiet sense of comfort and gratitude.”
