Front cover The 2026 North Canterbury Youth Futures Careers Expo was another fantastic event for our young people. With over 1300 attendees and 70 stallholders it meant that both the attendees and stallholders had plenty of connection opportunities. The stallholders ranged from local businesses to universities, and volunteering opportunities too. Planning is already underway for the 2027 Expo!

Greetings

from the Editor Kia ora koutou The joys of spring have arrived. On this morning’s walk I found that the neighour’s sheep had produced two sets of lambs. My daffodils are out in bucket loads and, with clear skies and still a bit of frost on the ground, all seems well with the world! For those of you who have been struck down by rather lengthy winter bugs, there is plenty of inspiration in the pages of this edition, to encourage you to get back out and about. We are fortunate to have such a suite of education, entertainment and social and community service offerings in our District. If you’re looking to give back to the community, you’ll find a diverse range of options inside, or have a look on the Volunteer Canterbury website. You’ll be surprised by the variety. If you or someone you know needs a little support, we have featured a range of local services and community initiatives that can assist with financial or social hardship.

For links to a broader range of local services and supports, we encourage you to make use of the Next Steps website, a collaboratively developed site that is aimed at being a ‘one stop shop’ that can point service providers and residents to local agencies and community groups who can help. https://nextsteps.org.nz Last month, I highlighted the challenge that we are experiencing around the escalating cost of postage and its impact on our ability to do large mail-outs of paper copies of Chatter. As I said, we’re working on an alternative that will ensure that those who still like to have a paper copy can easily access one Watch this space! Meanwhile, if you can, perhaps consider going digital. Kia pai te tiaki. - Take good care -and make sure you take the time to enjoy the lovely spring weather.

8 Fundraising:

•

To all the businesses that supported Daffodil by hosting a counter box, dressed up their business window for Paint the Town Yellow, or allowed us to collect outside your premises for the Street Appeal.

•

To our wonderful volunteers – how awesome are you! From planning and coordinating Daffodil Day in your local communities, to assisting with the logistics and delivery of resources, fresh flower deliveries, showing up at local events to fly the Cancer Society flag, collecting at the street appeal, and helping with the pack down of our national campaign – we could not run Daffodil Day without you – thank you so very much!

Daffodil Day – THANK YOU! 1 in 3 Kiwis will receive a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime. Each day 81 Kiwis hear the words, “you have cancer.” Daffodil Day is a chance to show your friends and family affected by cancer they’re not alone. Daffodil Day is Cancer Society’s most iconic and much-loved fundraising campaign. A huge thank you to everyone who supported Daffodil Day! •

•

From the incredible community fundraisers that were held such as The 24 hour Big Spin, 24 hour Pickle-a-thon, Anytime Fitness Rangiora Challenge, Pegasus Parkrun, Vintage Car Club Rally, schools, preschools, businesses and organisations activities and events – you all rock! We had a record number of Fresh Flowers ordered in North Canterbury this year; it is such fun delivering the gorgeous daffodil bunches – they always bring a smile.

It’s the generosity of New Zealanders on Daffodil Day that help cancer patients and their families (whānau) get the care and practical support they need; from crucial help getting to treatment via our free driving service, navigating the health system, emotional and practical support, through to providing accommodation for those needing life-saving treatment far from home. Daffodil Day is also about donating in order to protect future generations of New Zealanders by helping to fund world-leading cancer research and vital prevention programmes. We can’t thank you enough for your support of Daffodil Day.

Make a household emergency plan A household emergency plan lets everyone in your household know what to do in an emergency and how to get ready. Having a plan helps make actual emergency situations less stressful. Your emergency plan should consider: •

Your strengths, needs and situation

•

Steps you have already taken to prepare

•

Gaps in your plan that increase your risk in an emergency (and ways to address them).

Make a plan with your whānau to get through an emergency. Think about the things you need every day and work out what you would do if you didn’t have them. Make sure your home emergency plan also lines up with emergency plans for your work, school, and other places where you spend a lot of time. Fill in the form then print it out, stick it on the fridge and make sure everyone knows the plan. Or save it as a PDF and email it to your whānau. For more information or to make an emergency plan go to: https://getready.govt.nz/prepared/household/make-a-plan

The North Canterbury Woodcraft Club continues to welcome new members who are discovering the wonderful world of Woodturning. We have had a steady influx of young and old, male and female coming along to our well equipped Clubrooms to give wood turning a go and taking up membership. They have enjoyed turning an interesting range of objects from bowls and twig pots to wooden bodied pens to spinning tops. We also enjoyed hosting the No 1 Company Rangiora Boys Brigade over two nights where they turned handles to complete a wooden tool box project they have been working on. We are always keen to support community groups who would like to have a go at wood turning. Last week, we held our 41st Annual General Meeting and as part of this event, we awarded Life Membership to our previous President and key tutor, Noel Graham. Noel was President of the club for 15 years and has been the tutor for a number of 3 year National Association of Woodturning Certificate courses, available for members who want to take their wood turning to a higher level. Noel has also run the Wednesday afternoon club sessions for over a decade. The citation on his Life Membership read "In recognition of outstanding dedication, commitment to this club and the valued contribution to the art and craft of woodturning" If you are interested in having a go at wood turning or would like your community group or organisation to have a go (a very different end of year activity!) then check out our website for contact Club President Howard Pettigrew (right) congratulates Noel on his Life Membership details - https://nthcantwoodcraft.net/

Services & Programmes

Operating Hours Our office is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 4.30pm. We’re all connected That’s why the CAB service is so important. We act as a critical community hub, connecting people with the information and services they need. We provide the warmth and welcome of a place where anyone can come to talk about, and get help, with any issue that’s of concern. The CAB service includes in-depth interviewing of a client to identify what is happening for them or what information they seek, and to find out what they’ve done so far. Our trained volunteers research options specific to each client’s situation and then explain these to the client in a way that helps them understand and work out what they want to do next. Extra support even if you’ve already done some research Even if you’ve already done some research, we’re happy to discuss options with you and perhaps find even more information to support you. It can be very helpful to talk things over before taking action, whether that’s what to say when you visit a retailer about a faulty product, how to approach your gas/phone/power provider about a query on your bill, or how to talk to your employer about a workplace issue or your landlord about a tenancy issue. Perhaps you have an issue with the dynamics of family relationships or noisy neighbours. Our Clinics We hold free clinics that cover advice for beneficiaries, employment, immigration, and two types of legal assistance. In addition, we have volunteers who are also Justices of the Peace, and they offer that service when they’re on duty. Please get in touch for dates and more information about the clinics and JPs. General Support If you or someone you know needs information, advice or support on any matter, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us. We’re here to help. We’ll even provide a listening ear if that’s what you need. All our services are free and confidential. You can find us at 209 High Street, Rangiora, or you can phone us on 03 313 8822 or 0800 367 222, or send us an email northcanterbury@cab.org.nz

Register Interest: Free Two-session AI Workshops for Non-Profit Leaders The Nelson AI Sandbox, in collaboration with Rātā Foundation, invites leaders and managers from community organisations across Nelson, Tasman, and Christchurch to express interest in a free AI Education workshop series for the non-profit sector. Each workshop is made up of two half-day sessions, held one week apart. Building on the success of our previous workshops where over 200 organisations participated, engaged, and demonstrated tangible productivity and efficiency gains – we are now offering multiple workshops during September and October 2026 in: 1.

Nelson

2.

Christchurch

These sessions are a revised version of our previous Full Day workshops and intended for those who have not done one previously. These practical sessions are designed to help your team use AI in ways that save time, increase efficiency, and support your kaupapa. Whether you are drafting policies, writing funding applications, sending out communication, or generating new ideas, AI can help lighten the load and let your people get on with doing what they do best. This isn’t about replacing people – it’s about strengthening your team with tools to work smarter and stay mission-focused in a fastchanging digital landscape. By participating, you can expect to: 1.

Save time: Use AI to draft funding proposals, streamline internal reporting, and fast-track policy writing.

2.

Boost operational capacity: Learn tools that support service delivery, fundraising, and communication - without adding more stress.

3.

Build internal confidence: Demystify AI for your team, replacing fear with curiosity and competence.

4.

Improve wellbeing: Discover how AI can lift the load for your staff and volunteers, making their days less stressful and more rewarding and help the people you support get even better results.

5.

Create an AI policy tailored to your organisation’s values and needs -protecting data, ensuring safety, and enabling future growth.

6.

Join a regional support network of AI-enabled non-profits.

7.

Walk away with use cases specific to the sector.

Who is this for? Decision-makers, managers, board members, and anyone guiding their organisation’s strategy, operations, or communication. Whether you are AI-curious or just unsure where to begin, this is a safe and practical place to start. Register your interest here: https://survey. zohopublic.com.au/zs/89DN4O This form is not the final workshop registration. Once dates are confirmed, we will email those who have expressed interest with details of available workshops and a separate registration link.
