The Waimakariri Youth Action Plan 2026– 2029 was officially launched on Thursday 17 September 2026. The three–year plan provides a framework for Council, community organisations, schools, employers, service providers and young people to work together across eight key themes identified through community engagement. Members of the Youth Action Plan Advisory Group also participated in a panel discussion, sharing their experiences of helping shape the plan and discussing future opportunities and challenges.

Greetings
from the Editor Kia ora koutou I feel like I am watching a slow motion movie, as the Spring sun coaxes out the daffodils, the insects and hibernating gardeners. Spring marks a time of optimism, growth and hope for many in our communities. With gardening, outdoor activities and swimming dominating our recreation time. Get your garden tools and your togs ready! As always, the Community and Social sectors have had a busy winter, with the development of the Homelessness Response Service which will be locally delivered by The Salvation Army. This provides people with connection into our community services, and aims to support them toward having permanent and safe housing. If you know of someone sleeping rough, please use the online referral form available on www.waimakariri.govt.nz to link them in. Search Homelessness and click on the ‘Seen someone Sleeping Rough?’ tab at the bottom of the page. In other news, the nationwide bus card system – Motu Move, is being launched by ECan.
Our old bus cards will no longer work from Monday 23 November. You can pick up a new card from the Interchange, or visit our Libraries. ECan will be popping up in our Libraries and Council service centres across October and November to distribute these new cards and support people to load their concessions on to their card. If you are a Gold Card, Community Services, Total Mobility Card or under 18, you will need to load these concessions on to your Motu Move card to get your discounted fare. If you need support to do this, reach out to ECan’s public transport team or visit our Libraries and Sevice Centres. The change to the Lotteries funding criteria has created some confusion for community groups as to which fund stream applies to them. If your group has been affected by this change, we recommend speaking with the DIA Community Matters staff.

Cornhole at MainPower Stadium After recent news stories about the growth and success of Cornhole in Christchurch, North Canterbury Sports has started a Cornhole group at MainPower Stadium. The traditional American sport has grown in popularity and competitiveness around the world over the last 10 years, and NC Sports sees it as another good opportunity for people of all ages to get involved in physical activity with a strong social element. Cornhole involves players throwing wheat– filled bags at a sloping board, with the aim of scoring points by getting their bag to either land and stay on the board or fall through a hole cut in it. Games can be played as singles or pairs with strategies and scoring similar to lawn bowls. NC Sports Cornhole sessions are at 10am on Wednesday mornings on the courts at MainPower Stadium. Cost is $5 per player for an hour and all ages and abilities are welcome. All equipment is provided so players just have to wear suitable shoes and bring a drink bottle. Depending on the level of interest going forward NC Sports may be able to add other morning sessions and will also look to start an evening session if regular court space can be secured. At least initially these will be recreational/social sessions with more serious players having the option to join a Cornhole club in Christchurch if they want greater competition. Any enquires can be directed to Tony Kean at North Canterbury Sports. Email: tkean@sportstrust.org.nz Phone: 021 729 430

Abbeyfield Waimakariri Inc media release 21 August 2026 Abbeyfield House plans revealed An artist’s impression of the proposed Abbeyfield House for North Canterbury has been released (image below) and is attracting positive feedback, says Abbeyfield Waimakariri Inc chair Valda Reveley. Valda Reveley and deputy chair Richard Tolan have worked closely with Abbeyfield’s property arm over many months and are thrilled with the artist’s impressions of the elegant building designed to be home to 14 independent seniors. “It will sit well in the established neighbourhood, and with a bus stop right outside, our residents will be able to continue taking part in community activities, something we encourage at all existing 16 Abbeyfield houses in New Zealand,” Valda adds. The floorplan shows just how practical the home will be:14 ensuite studios with internal and external access, a laundry in each of the two wings, a meeting room, kitchen, large pantry, combined communal dining–living room, storage room and an office. “The Abbeyfield model of senior housing provides a warm, suitable, well–maintained home, shared household costs and nutritious meals, companionship, and the peace of mind that comes from living in a safe and supportive community.
“There is no capital entry charge, and when compared with the combined cost of maintaining a home independently, and the challenges of living alone, Abbeyfield represents exceptional value,” Valda added. The release comes on the back of the Waimakariri District Council’s news that it and Abbeyfield have signed a Memorandum of Agreement to progress the council–owned reserve site in Kingsbury Ave, Rangiora, through its legal processes. “The three arms of Abbeyfield – our committee, Abbeyfield NZ and Abbeyfield Properties Ltd – have collectively worked hard alongside the council to reach this step towards confirming the proposed site, and now we wait until the appropriate statutory processes are conducted,” said Valda Reveley. Valda Reveley, AWI committee chairperson 027 271 9961 valdarev@gmal.com abbeyfieldwaimakariri@gmail.com www.abbeyfield.co.nz/house/waimakariri Issued on behalf of the AWI by volunteer member Su Anderson su.anderson@xtra.co.nz

Waghorn builders have made great progress with our new Shed and the structure will soon be reaching completion. Week 9, and you can see we now have a building. We still have a long way to go before the shed will be operating and we are continue to fund raise for electrical work, drainage and other incidental costs that we will incur. The photo below shows the concrete blocks that the container units will sit on. We are onsite on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, you are welcome to join us for a cuppa, usually around 9.30, if you are thinking of joining the Menz Shed this is a good time to do it, exciting times ahead. We are not allowed to work on this site yet; however, we continue to take on projects. Some of our members are working on small jobs in their own garages or sheds and we continue to work off site in the community. Spring is in the air, and your garden may be in need of some care. Maybe a new bench? The men are currently producing benches similar to this one. Or maybe you need a new garden fence? Volunteering
Friendship Volunteers Wanted in Rangiora and Kaiapoi Imagine receiving a message from a friend asking if you'd like to grab a coffee, go for a walk, catch a rugby game, or simply have a chat. For many of us, these everyday connections are something we take for granted. For some adults with intellectual disabilities, opportunities to build and maintain friendships can be much harder to find. At IHC, we believe everyone deserves meaningful connections and a sense of belonging. That's why we're looking for caring, reliable volunteers in Rangiora and Kaiapoi who are willing to spend a little time sharing their interests, laughter, and companionship with someone who is keen to make a new friend. Friendships look different for everyone. One person might enjoy going for a drive and stopping for coffee. Another may love fishing, going to the gym, creating art, baking, attending sports matches, or seeing a show at the theatre. The simplest activities often become the most meaningful when they are shared with a friend. There are several people in Rangiora and Kaiapoi waiting for a volunteer friend – they are so looking forward to chatting and making a new friend. As a Friendship Volunteer, you'll be carefully matched with someone who has similar interests and lives nearby. Together, you'll spend around one to two hours each week or fortnight enjoying activities you both like and
building a genuine connection over time. You don't need any special qualifications. If you're friendly, easy–going, reliable, and interested in getting to know someone, you already have the qualities we're looking for. Your willingness to show up, listen, and share life's everyday moments can make a lasting difference. In return, you'll gain the satisfaction of knowing you've helped create a more connected and inclusive community. Many volunteers tell us that the friendships they build enrich their own lives just as much as the lives of the people they support. IHC provides full training, ongoing support, and careful matching to help friendships get off to a great start. Volunteers must be aged 18 years or over and be willing to complete reference checks and NZ Police Vetting. A cup of coffee. A walk around the neighbourhood. A shared interest. A new friendship. Sometimes the smallest commitment can make the biggest difference. Join us and help create friendships that change lives. Please contact diana.shoppee@ihc.org.nz 027 531 3579 if you would like to talk about this great opportunity in more detail. I am so looking forward to hearing from you!

Friends of Matawai Park, Rangiora
Did you know that Matawai Park in Rangiora is actually classified a Scenic Reserve? It was created by a group of visionaries out of wasteland in the 1970s and 80s. For much of its life the park had a volunteer group creating and caring for it but less so in recent years. Last year a group of us re–started the volunteering and have been busy there ever since. Every Friday morning 5 to 10 of us gather in Matawai Park, dressed in our gardening gear and carrying a bucket of tools and a bag of
morning tea. We care for the park; weeding, trimming, sometimes planting, trapping pests and picking up old rubbish as we go. We’d love you to join us – the park is 4.7ha (11.5 acres) so there’s always plenty to do. Where: 30 King Street, we meet at the main entrance near the toilet block. When: 9am on Fridays. We stop for morning tea at 10.30am then often carry on for a while afterwards. Contact: pestfreewaimakariri@gmail.com for more information, or turn up on the day.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Hits the Big Screen! From 1 October, keep an eye out at the Rangiora Town Hall Cinema - Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Canterbury is hitting the big screen with a brand-new mentor recruitment ad! Featuring some of our local mentoring matches, the ad was created by the talented Brendan Holt of Display and captures what mentoring is all about: one hour a week, building a friendship that can make a lifetime of difference. A huge thank you to the Rangiora-Ashley, KaiapoiTuahiwi, Oxford-Ohoka and Woodend-Sefton Community Boards for funding the creation of the ad, and to the Keith Laugesen Charitable Trust for funding the cost of screening it at the cinema. We’re incredibly grateful for this local support in helping us spread the word and inspire more people to become mentors.

There are five 45–minute appointments available, and they are on a one–off basis. The clinic on the first Monday of the month has only three appointments available between 9.30am and 12.30pm. Bookings are essential. Free legal information appointments are available fortnightly on a Wednesday between 1pm and 2pm. The lawyers will not offer free legal advice as such. They are simply listening to the client’s issue and then advising if they need to seek legal advice from a law firm or, alternatively, directing them to where they would be best to go to resolve their issue. This could be, for example, the Disputes Tribunal. The appointments are for 10 minutes. The scheme is supported by six local North Canterbury law firms who donate their time and expertise. You must book for this clinic. General Support If you or someone you know needs information, advice or support on any matter, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us. We’re here to help. We’ll even provide a listening ear if that’s what you need. All our services are free and confidential. You can find us at 209 High Street, Rangiora, or you can phone us on 03 313 8822 or 0800 367 222, or send us an email northcanterbury@cab.org.nz

Council Information
Opportunity for Young Drivers to Build Lifelong Safe Driving Skills Eleven young drivers from the Waimakariri District will have the opportunity to take part in the highly regarded Street Smart young driver training programme this October, thanks to a substantial subsidy from Waimakariri District Council. The Council is sponsoring eleven local participants, reducing the cost of the course to just $50 per person. The Council contributes the balance of the cost towards each place, helping remove financial barriers and making advanced driver training more accessible to young people and their families. Street Smart, driven by the Tony Quinn Foundation Road Safety programme, is a practical, hands-on driver education course designed to help young people develop safer driving habits, improve hazard awareness, and build confidence behind the wheel. The programme is open to drivers aged 16 to 24 who hold a valid learner, restricted or full licence. A key feature of the course is the involvement of a parent, guardian or supervising adult, who attends alongside the young driver. This helps ensure the lessons learned during the training continue to be reinforced during everyday driving. Participants are also required to bring their own vehicle, complete with current registration, warrant of fitness and insurance. Using their own vehicle allows drivers to gain a better understanding of how it responds in different situations and develop skills that can be directly applied on the roads they drive every day. Young drivers continue to be over-represented in serious crashes throughout New Zealand, making education and practical experience important tools in improving road safety outcomes. By supporting participation in programmes such as Street Smart, Waimakariri District Council is investing in safer young drivers, safer families, and safer roads for the entire community. The next Street Smart course will be held at Euromarque Motorsport Park, Ruapuna, Christchurch, on Monday 5 October and Tuesday 6 October 2026. With only eleven subsidised places available each school holiday, interested young drivers are encouraged to register early to secure their spot. For more information and to register, visit: https://ow.ly/Kwz050ZL4Wz Waimakariri District Council Road Safety Co-ordinator Peter Daly said the programme provides far more than basic driver training. "Street Smart gives young drivers the opportunity to experience professional driver coaching in a safe, controlled environment, while involving the adults who help guide their driving journey. By subsidising the programme, we're helping local families access skills and knowledge that can make a real difference on our roads. The requirement to bring both a supervising adult and the vehicle they normally drive helps ensure the lessons learned on the day continue long after the course has finished."
