The Mayor Dan Gordon and prize winners of the Race Unity Poster Competition

The Poster Competition began four years ago in collaboration with the Baha’i Community, with the aim of sparking conversations in local schools about inclusion and belonging. The competition coincides with Unity Week in March.

This year’s theme, “We All Belong,” inspired a strong response, with 236 entries from children and young people aged 5 to 16.

Winners across the various age categories received their prizes from Mayor Gordon and Rohiyeh Faramarzi of the Baha’i Community.

The North Loburn Kapa Haka group beautifully performed several waiata, adding to the spirit of unity and celebration.

Zero Data

Zero Data is available to anyone using a mobile device connected to the Spark, Skinny, One NZ, 2degrees, Warehouse Mobile, Slingshot or Orcon mobile networks. The purpose of Zero Data is to ensure all New Zealanders can access essential information and digital services.

If your mobile device is connected to a participating network, none of the mobile data you use when you visit websites through Zero Data will count against your data cap or incur any charges. All data usage will be charged back to the government agencies that sponsor the websites you visit.

All you need to do is make sure your mobile data is turned on before you visit Zero Data. You’ll know you’re on Zero Data when you see a green ribbon across the top of the website.

Zero Data brings all New Zealand’s sponsored websites together in one place and makes it easy for you to know exactly when you’re using Zero Data.

The range of information and services available through the homepage will increase over time as more government agencies get involved.

Zero Data is available only for people using a mobile device connected to a participating mobile network and isn’t available for any device using a broadband/fibre connection. This might apply, for example, if your mobile device is connected to your home internet via Wi-Fi. Some website content such as online payment systems may be unavailable through Zero Data due to technical limitations. The Menz Shed is proud to be part of Kaiapoi and the wider community. During the year we provide decorations for the Williams Street bridge, installed, funded and maintained by the shed.

Our ANZAC day commeration is now in place. In other shed news our fund raising barometer is rising but we still have a long way to go. Donations are always welcome.

If you would like to support our relocation to our new site at Courtney Drive our bank account details are: MenzShed of Kaiapoi Inc 03-1585-0428006-00.

Since the beginning of the year, we have been clearing the Sims Road site. Our existing buildings are in the process of being transported and stored by Kings Removals. We are so grateful to Grant and his team for their support and providing their services free of charge. More on the building removal operation next month.

Our new containers are onsite, but in a temporary position at Courtenay Drive. We are not allowed to work on this site yet; however, we continue to take on projects. Some of our members are working on small jobs in their own garages or sheds and we continue to work off site in the community.

A couple of our recent projects have included a new fence and a completed decking area

If you have a project you would like the Menz Shed to help with, we’d love to hear from you. Get in touch and lets see how we can bring your idea to life.

Come and have a chat with us at our temporary site on Courtenay Drive, near the croquet club, between 8.00am and 11.30am Tuesday and Thursday or ring

More ways to pay

Community Services Card and SuperGold concessions are now available on contactless payment

Community Services and

SuperGold cardholders Link your concession to contactless payments on public transport.

You can now pay for Metro bus and ferry services in greater Christchurch using a credit or debit card, phone or smart watch.

If you have a Community Services or SuperGold concession, you can now choose to link it to a contactless payment option. Linking your concession will ensure you pay your usual community services discounted fare or get SuperGold free travel when paying using contactless payment.

You can keep using your SuperGold or Metrocard for now if you prefer. We’ll let you know when you need to switch to Motu Move.

What you need to know

` Concessions can only be linked to one card or device when using contactless payment

` When you tag on for the first time after your concession is approved, make sure you use the card or device you will use every time you travel.

` Your concession will be linked to this card or device.

` Continue to use this card or device every time you travel to ensure you get your concession fare.

Important information

Motu Move treats your physical contactless card and the same card loaded onto your phone or watch as separate payment methods. If you switch between them, Motu Move won’t recognise your concession, and you’ll be charged a standard fare.

Follow these easy steps to link your concession

` Step 1: Go to motumove.govt.nz and create an account

` Step 2: Add a credit or debit card to your account

` Step 3: Link your concession to your credit or debit card – you’ll need your Community Services or SuperGold card number to do this. If you are a SuperGold cardholder and you also have a Community Services Card, you can link both concessions to ensure you get the best fare every time you travel by completing this step again.

` Step 4: Tag on using your chosen card or device Choose the contactless card or device you would like to use when you travel and ensure you use this card or device the first time you tag on so your concession is applied.

` Your concession will be linked to the first contactless card or device you tag on with.

` Tag on with the same contactless card or device you first used, every time you travel, to ensure you get your concession fare.

Motu Move will always make sure you receive the best fare, as long as you use the same payment option.

SuperGold customers travelling during the free fare period won’t be charged when tagging on with Motu Move.

Find out more at motumove.govt.nz

If you’d like help to apply for your Community Services Card or SuperGold travel concession on a contactless payment card, call our team on 0800 66 77 88 Monday – Friday 8am – 5.30pm

VOLUNTEER VISITORS NEEDED

Visitors are needed in North Canterbury.

K A I community

Hours

Please note that we have changed our hours for the next few months. Our office is now open from 9.30am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday.

Services

We act as a critical community hub, connecting people with the information and services they need. Our service is not-for-profit and delivered by trained volunteers. We’re available face-toface, by phone and by email. There’s no time limit on how long you can spend with one of our volunteers and all our services are free and confidential.

Our Clinics

We hold free clinics that cover beneficiary assistance, budgeting, employment and immigration. We also offer two types of legal assistance – a free legal information clinic for guidance on whether you need a lawyer and, if not, where to take your issue and a free weekly legal clinic run by Community Law Canterbury. In addition, we have volunteers who are also Justices of the Peace, and they offer that service when they’re on duty.

Please get in touch for dates and more information about JPs and booking for the clinics.

We also run a clinic in the Amberley Library where we offer face to face assistance from 9.30am to 11.30am on the second and fourth Fridays of the month. No booking required.

Extra support even if you’ve already done some research

Even if you’ve already done some research, we’re happy to discuss options with you and perhaps find even more information to support you. It can be very helpful to talk things over before taking action. It might be what to say when you visit a retailer about a faulty product, how to approach your gas/phone/power provider about a query on your bill, or how to talk to your employer about a workplace issue. Perhaps you have an issue with the dynamics of family relationships or noisy neighbours.

Our Service

Do come and see us. We trained to listen and to research. We’ll deal with anything that’s concerning you no matter how big or how small. We’re here to help.

You can find us at 209 High Street, Rangiora, or phone us on 03 313 8822 or 0800 367 222, or send us an email northcanterbury@cab.org.nz

Promises for all

If you would like to see your name used in a novel, or promote your business on air, then next month’s Abbeyfield Auction of Promises is the place to go. They are just two of the 40 lots valued between $100 and $6000 to go under the hammer at the Rangiora RSA on Saturday May 16.

“This style of fundraising has created considerable interest in the community and we are extremely grateful for the wide range of services, experiences, accommodation and tours donated for it,” says Mrs Valda Reveley, chair of Abbeyfield Waimakariri Inc.

“There’s something for everyone, including a treat for four people if they happen to be in Wellington sometime this year, because local MP Matt Doocey will take them to dinner at Bellamy’s and a private tour of Parliament,” Mrs Reveley adds.

Some other items are accommodation in several holiday spots, golf at Clearwater, pottery lessons, a full skin check, being driven to a winery lunch in a Lamborghini, a date with Gloria (a classic 1935 Triumph car), family fun time at Hanmer Springs, a flying lesson, a chance to be the auctioneer of several lots on the night, and several mystery envelopes.

“We do have a few physical products as well,” says Mrs Reveley. “Rodin Cars, based in Mt Lyford, has given us top quality branded clothing to auction, and a talented local yarn artist has donated a stunning

peg-loomed floor rug and cushion.”

Funds raised from the auction will go towards building a flatting-for-seniors Abbeyfield House in Rangiora.

Tickets are $20 per person and available from Humanitix (Abbeyfield Auction of Promises) or by emailing abbeyfieldwaimakariritickets@gmail.com

Abbeyfield Waimakariri committee member Stephanie Waterfield checks out photos of a few auction lots on offer at the auction.
