Contributions to this Newsletter are welcome, and can be faxed, emailed or posted for the next edition to the above address.

* The closing date for contributions is before the 20th of the month prior to publication.

If you wish to receive an electronic copy of

Ngā mihi o te tau hou

Greetings for the New Year from all of us in the Council Community Team and welcome to our first issue of Chatter for 2026.

You will have noticed that I no longer write the editorial each month. That’s because I want to raise the profile of each of the great team of people that I have the privilege of leading, and their roles in supporting our community and its organisations to make our district safer, healthier, more inclusive and connected.

As I read through this month’s edition, I continue to be amazed at the incredible range of supports, services events and opportunities to improve or enhance the lives of local residents.

By the time you read this you will likely be fully back into the swing of life and the juggling that entails. It’s good to know that, whatever stage of life you’re at, there are plenty of local opportunities to connect, learn, be active and enjoy (take notice of) all of the beautiful places and spaces that our District has to offer. It’s worth checking out the Events page inside for a list of fun activities to keep your evenings and weekends busy over the next wee while.

Greetings from the Editor

“Mauri tū, mauri ora – An active soul is a healthy soul.” I’m not one for New Year’s resolutions but the beginning of the year is a great time to reassess our social and physical wellbeing, then get a bit outside of our comfort zone by trying something new, addressing something we’ve been putting off, or making new connections.

If you’re considering joining a new club or community group, it’s sometimes easier at the start of their year, when everyone feels a bit ‘new’. The Community Information and Volunteering sections may give you some ideas - and don’t forget to visit the Next Steps website to find more information about the services and supports available in North Canterbury https://nextsteps.org.nz

If you’re back to work or volunteering and feeling a bit stale, have a look at the Professional Development and Funding sections - there might be something to inspire, or to help you with planning for the year.

Kia pai te rā – Have a good day!

Tessa

Introducing Cherry Burgess

Cherry.burgess@wmk.govt.nz

Kia ora, my name is Cherry Burgess, I have recently joined the Youth Development Community Team at the Waimakariri District Council, where I will be working Monday and Tuesday 8.30am–5pm and Wednesday 8.30am-12.30pm.

My focus is empowering youth to be the very best version of themselves, creating and offering opportunities for them to excel in their future. I am eager to strive for the best outcome for local young people, empowering them to be active, present, and ready to learn in their communities.

Working with a range of youth has been my passion for the last 15 years, and it is a privilege to help support and offer engagement within our amazing community. I am excited to be involved in this youth-facing role, where I will support Waimakariri Youth Council and WaiYouth Action Groups, to develop leadership skills that will benefit all local young people.

My background has been varied working in the Ministry of Education sector, as well as Ministry of Social Development. My passions lie deep with pastoral care needs, confidence and relationship building, along with trust and connection. I also have the ability to reach a broad range of people. In recent years my work has centred around supporting young people to find a prosperous future, with a can-do attitude.

Alongside my husband bringing up our family of four young adults, you’ll often find me in the great outdoors tramping, or in the kitchen cooking up a storm for our ever-extending family and friends. I’ve always found that food and kindness are great vehicles to bring people together. Our door is always open at home, and that is the same philosophy I carry forward at WDC. I am looking forward to meeting and connecting with people in the district. Please feel free to reach out if our similar roles of helping to make a difference, adding value and benefit to our strong community, will provide an opportunity for us to work together for a brighter future for local rangatahi.

Affordable Housing in Rangiora: A Community-Focused Answer to a Growing Need

As housing pressures continue to affect individuals and families across the country, Rangiora is quietly emerging as a place where affordability, dignity, and community still matter. A range of affordable housing options are currently available, that you may not already know about, with more coming soon, both located in central Rangiora. They have been designed for people who value security, independence, and a warm, modern place to call home.

One standout example of housing currently available, is the main house at The ARC, a modern shared living community created specifically for women aged 50 years and over who are seeking a safe, connected, and independent lifestyle, without the financial stress of buy-in costs common in many retirement villages. Located in the heart of Rangiora, The ARC offers a thoughtful and practical alternative to traditional retirement models.

The ARC is warm, welcoming, and purpose-designed for community living. Residents enjoy large, north-facing private bedrooms, each with a brand-new ensuite, within a fully furnished home. It’s a place that strikes a balance many people are looking for: social when you want it, private when you don’t.

Affordability sits at the heart of this model. Rentals are genuinely affordable, with no buyin costs, making it accessible for women who wish to protect their financial independence. Its central location allows residents to walk to shops, cafés, pharmacies, and bus stops, reducing reliance on a car while remaining closely connected to everyday life.

Beyond the private rooms, The ARC offers shared spaces that encourage wellbeing and connection. A central courtyard, established gardens, and large raised garden beds provide opportunities to relax, socialise, or grow vegetables.

Off-street parking is available, and the home comes fully equipped with all whiteware, kitchenware, and living and dining furniture, residents simply bring their own bedroom furniture.

With limited spaces and strong demand, interest in The ARC highlights a broader need for housing that is not only affordable, but also thoughtfully designed and community-focused.

Adding to this positive picture are newly renovated rental units, currently being completed just a short walk from High Street in Rangiora. These units will be available from mid to late February to all genders and families alike.

They are intended for people of good character who genuinely value affordable housing and who wish to be part of a respectful, well-maintained living environment.

Together with The ARC, these new units (coming soon) represent a growing commitment from people within the community, to providing quality, affordable housing options in Rangiora’s town centre.

For those considering their next housing step, these housing initiatives offers more than just a roof over your head, they offer choice, connection, and the opportunity to live well without financial strain. Enquiries are encouraged, as availability is limited and demand is high.

Abbeyfield Waimakariri –Promises, promises

Promises of holiday accommodation in Arrowtown, sports coaching, beauty treatments and mystery envelopes will be among the many items to be put up for auction in the Abbeyfield Auction of Promises next May.

With $350,000 needing to be raised for a ‘flatting for seniors’ Abbeyfield House in Rangiora, Abbeyfield Waimakariri (AWI) wants to hold an event that was a “little different from the norm” and I think this style of auction fits the bill, AWI chair Valda Reveley said.

“We’ve already been donated some exciting promises for our auction and early in 2026 we’ll be gathering many more of varying values, so the event should be attractive to a wide range of people,” she said.

Mrs Reveley added that a call will go out early next year for volunteers to help with the logistics of organising and running the auction. To be held at the Rangiora RSA on Saturday 16 May 2026, funds realised at the auction will be added to the $102,000 already raised towards building a 14-suite house in Kingsbury Ave, Rangiora.

The house, for independent single seniors, will provide both private and shared spaces with affordable rents that will include all meals, power and other overheads.

Spokesperson is the committee chairperson Valda Reveley – call 027 271 9961 or email valda.sam@xtra.co.nz abbeyfieldwaimakariri@gmail.com www.abbeyfield.co.nz/house/waimakariri

Friends of Matawai Park

Last year a group got together to look after Matawai Park in Rangiora. This is a scenic reserve which has been loved over the years but needs behind the scenes TLC to keep it in good shape. We meet at 9am on Friday mornings and work on the pest plants that will smother the native vegetation. Morning tea is at 10.30am (provided but bring a mug please). Tools are provided but bring your own gloves and sturdy footwear.

Meet us at the King Street entrance, 9am Fridays, otherwise email pestfreewaimakariri@gmail.com for more information.

Pest Free Waimakariri

Since September birds have been busy breeding in the bush, along the coast and rivers and in our gardens. Even in January I had a family of fantails and a young bellbird following its parent around my garden. The trapping we do makes a difference for the wildlife and for us - the fresh air, the exercise, the surroundings.

If you’ve thought you’d like to try something new in 2026 this might be just the thing. We can teach you what you need to know and set you up with one of the Waimakariri trapping groups.

Although nesting is over it’s still important to keep controlling pests as this is the time when rodent numbers climb, in turn providing food for mustelids (stoats and weasels) which also breed rapidly.

Contact pestfreewaimakariri@gmail.com for more information on looking after your local piece of nature.

Small Steps, Big Calm: Budgeting Tips for a Stress-Free Financial Future

In uncertain times, managing money well is one of the most practical ways to reduce stress and regain a sense of control. Budgeting does not have to be complicated or restrictive. In fact, the simplest approaches are often the most effective.

Start with clarity

The first step is knowing where your money goes. Write down all sources of income and list regular expenses such as rent or mortgage, power, groceries, insurance and transport. In New Zealand, checking bank statements and using free online tools can make this quick and eye-opening. Once you see the full picture, you can make informed decisions rather than relying on guesswork.

Plan

before you spend

A weekly or fortnightly budget, aligned with your pay cycle, helps prevent nasty surprises. Allocate money for essentials first, then set realistic limits for discretionary spending. Even allowing a small amount for treats helps a budget feel sustainable rather than punishing.

Easy ways to save

Small changes can add up over time:

• Shop with a list and avoid grocery shopping when hungry

• Compare power, broadband and insurance providers regularly. Many NZ households save hundreds each year by switching

Office phone: 03 313 3505

servicemanager@bsnc.org.nz www.bsnc.org.nz

• Set up automatic transfers to a savings account, even if it is only $10 or $20 at a time

• Review subscriptions and member-ships. If you are not using them, cancel them

Prepare for the unexpected

Building an emergency fund is one of the best ways to reduce financial stress. Aim to slowly build a buffer that could cover a few weeks of essential expenses. It does not happen overnight, but consistency matters more than size.

Look ahead with confidence

Planning for the future, whether it is retirement, a holiday, or simply staying out of debt, starts with small, regular habits. Make use of KiwiSaver, seek free budgeting advice if needed, and remember that asking for help is a strength, not a failure.

A calm financial future is built step by step. With a simple plan, small savings habits, and regular check-ins, you can create greater security and peace of mind for yourself and your family. Please phone or email to talk about your situation. Our trained Financial Mentors are on hand to provide you with free, confidential support.

Introducing Driving Miss Daisy Waimakariri West

Over the past six years, the North Canterbury Franchise has more than doubled in size. To keep pace with growing demand and continue delivering the reliable, high-quality service our customers expect, we knew it was time to expand. That’s why we made the decision to split the business and welcome new, like-minded owners to lead the newly established Driving Miss Daisy Waimakariri West Franchise. The franchise proudly serves the following areas: Okuku, Ashley, Rangiora, Eyrewell Forest, West Eyreton, Loburn, Burnt Hill, Oxford, Starvation Hill, Cust, Ohoka, Coopers Creek, and Fernside.

We’re excited to introduce Vaughan, who has proudly purchased this franchise and joined the Canterbury Daisy Community.

The Waimakariri West Team

Now based in Rangiora, some drivers, Brigid, Megan and Carol C have opted to stay on in the West to support Vaughan and the clients. The franchises will be assisting each other, so other drivers will be popping in at times also.

Clients will need to contact Vaughan using the information below.

Governance Bites: 2026

Starting February, and with support from Rātā Foundation, we are delighted to again offer this popular series of workshops, facilitated by LEAD’s Garth Nowland-Foreman, which support volunteers involved with the governance of community organisations.

Non-Profit Boards Adding Value

What’s the secret to Governance that really makes a difference for a non-profit organisation? In this interactive session, you will learn how your Board can be less boring and achieve more than just going through the motions or check up on what others are doing. Two important tools are offered to make this possible, which provide the foundation for all the following Governance Bites in this series. Believe it or not this doesn’t involve a call for greater commitment or doing more and more work as Board members.

Date: Wednesday 18 February

Venue: Aldersgate Centre

Time: 5.30pm to 7pm (doors open at 5pm with pizza ‘bites’)

RSVP: outreach@volcan.org.nz

Board and Management –Getting the Balance Right

This session gets down to the nitty-gritty of good governance, dealing with the most common questions and concerns that nonprofit leaders have about boards.

How can boards and managers work constructively together? Is there a clear dividing line between governing and dayto-day management? If not, how do we sort it out in practice? Does that change over time, and is it affected by the life-cycle stage of the non-profit organisation?

Date: Wednesday 18 March

Venue: Aldersgate Centre

Time: 5.30pm to 7pm (doors open at 5pm with pizza ‘bites’)

RSVP: outreach@volcan.org.nz

Our monthly meetings for the public will start again in March and we have some interesting speakers planned for this year. Meanwhile, the Museum is open Wednesdays and Sundays, 1.30pm to 4pm, 29 Good Street, Rangiora.

Would you like to be a volunteer at the Museum?

Can you spare a few hours once or twice during a three month period? Or help out as a volunteer on Sunday afternoons?

Jobs at Rangiora Museum are not onerous, and you will always be joined by someone who has plenty of experience. You will also get to know the Museum better yourself and you will meet other members of the Rangiora Early Records Society. Call in and have a chat about it.
