Core Board opening at Victoria Park playground, Rangiora June 25 2026
Core boards support Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) through visual cues which help to develop language skills like sentence building.
These boards provide essential words and phrases that are frequently used in communication, enabling individuals to express themselves effectively, make choices, and engage in conversations.
The initiative was originally proposed by the Waimakariri Access Group, at the request of the Lighthouse Programme at Rangiora High School, as part of their Long Term Plan submission and was supported by Council.

Welcome to the August edition of Chatter. This wonderful little community newsletter has now been in print for over 30 years. We recently discovered an edition from 1994. Back then Chatter was just four pages of typed out, largely Christchurch–based information.
Since 1994, our District’s population has more than doubled, with many new large residential developments that weren’t even on the map then.
Over those years we have grown in more than just numbers. We’ve been through a lot together, and the community response has been incredible. As a result of that, and a willingness to work together in what is now well known as ‘The Waimakariri Way’, the district is well served with services, supports and recreational activities that suit all ages and stages of life.
August is quite the month for Expos, bringing people together to be engaged informed and connect over issues, opportunities and supports that are relevant to their quality of life. The North Canterbury
Greetings from the Editor
Youth Futures Employment Opportunities Expo takes place from 4 – 7.30pm on Tuesday 11th August at Mainpower Stadium. This annual event features around 70 displays from a huge range of education and employment providers and attracts crowds of over 2,000.
The Disability Expo, from 1–3.30pm on Saturday 29th August at Rangiora High School Hall, is aimed at whānau, carers, service providers and those with disabilities. It is hugely popular. The Expo is preceded by an evening talk by Jeremy Faumuina, coach and mentor for the NZ Special Olympics Basketball Team. See inside for details.
As our readership grows, we do need to adapt our offering to meet its need while not blowing the budget. With postage prices these days, it is becoming unfeasible to continue large mail outs for paper copies. We’re working on a great alternative – Watch this space! Meanwhile, if you can, perhaps consider going digital. Saving on paper is so 2026!
Kia pai te tiaki. Take good care
Introducing Lin Klenner
Community Development Facilitator
Kia ora, hello, bonjour and guten tag!
I’m excited to be joining the Vibrant Communities team as a part–time Community Development Facilitator. I also work part–time at New Brighton Community Gardens, which gives me a foot in both worlds and helps me understand the opportunities and challenges from both a Council and community perspective.
Originally from Germany, I moved to New Zealand in 1999 and have proudly called Canterbury home ever since. At home, life is never dull as we’re a trilingual household speaking English, German, and French.
My background spans community–led projects, funding, local government, heritage conservation, the arts, project management, and governance. One project I’m especially proud to have chaired was the Village Green development in New Brighton, a wonderful example of what can happen when a community shares a common vision. What motivates me most, is helping people connect, and creating opportunities for everyone to contribute. Not everyone feels comfortable speaking in front of a crowd or filling out surveys, yet those quieter voices often have valuable insights to share. I’m passionate about finding different ways for people to participate that suit a range of communication styles and hearing from those who quietly support their communities but are less often represented in traditional consultation.
When I’m not working, you’ll usually find me treasure hunting in op shops or enjoying a good coffee.
My role within the community team has a focus on capacity and capability building for the ‘for purpose’ community organisations and groups. Whether you have an idea you’d like to bring to life, a community project you’d like to grow, or your governance group needs training or guidance, I’d love to hear from you. So, if you’d like to chat, grab a coffee or even recommend a great op shop, please get in touch!
Please feel free to contact me Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays lin.klenner@wmk.govt.nz 0800 965 468.

Fundraising
Daffodil Day: Friday 28 August – 1 in 3 Kiwis will receive a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime.
Each day 81 Kiwis hear the words, “you have cancer.” Daffodil Day is a chance to show your friends
and family affected by cancer they’re not alone. Daffodil Day is Cancer Society’s most iconic and much–loved fundraising campaign.
It’s the generosity of New Zealanders on Daffodil Day that help cancer patients and their families (whānau) get the care and practical support they need; from crucial help getting to treatment via our free driving service, navigating the health system, emotional and practical support, through to providing accommodation for those needing life–saving treatment far from home.
How you can help
• Purchase a bunch of fresh daffodils and have them delivered to your door the week of Daffodil Day.
• Arrange a community fundraiser with your work, organisation, school, friends or family.
• Place a counter box on your shop counter.
• Paint the Town Yellow and dress up your shop window – trophy and bragging rights up for grabs!
• Volunteer – collect at the street appeal or help to organise Daffodil Day in your local area.
Daffodil Day is also about donating in order to protect future generations of New Zealanders by helping to fund world–leading cancer research and vital prevention programmes. We can’t thank you enough for your support of Daffodil Day.
Tragically, so many of us will all be touched by this heartbreaking disease; that’s why we’re encouraging you to give by registering to fundraise for Daffodil Day, or by donating www.daffodilday.org.nz

Pegasus parkrun
Pegasus parkrun entered the community June 16th 2016, that was the date of our first ever parkrun around the shores of Lake Pegasus.
What is a parkrun?
Simply put, its an organised, free to participate, 5km walk, jog or run around a given circuit - that is arranged on a weekly basis every Saturday morning and your time is taken and recorded and emailed out to you. You are more than welcome to participate as a park, a volunteer or a spectator.
It is inclusive - we encourage everyone to come along, there's literally no time limit and we always have a Tailwalker who will always be the last person to finish.
As with all sports we had a complete down-time during the Covid pandemic, so even though we have been here for 10 years we are just now approaching our 500th parkrun. This will happen on the morning of August 29th.
Event500 will operate exactly the same as the previous 499, with a welcome for our First-Timers, then a run briefing by our Run Director for everyone before the Timekeeper sets everybody off. It's after the finish that it will be different - random draws will determine who will land a prize from amongst the many and varied donations we have secured.
There will be products, giveaways and vouchers to be given out to participants and volunteers - check out our Facebook page to see more of what businesses have shown such amazing support.
In the world of parkrun (yes, it's a global institution) achieving 500 parkruns entitles a parkrunner to wear a special Blue 500 Milestone t-shirt, so for our Event500 it has been declared a BLUE EVENT, parkrunners are invited to interpret the theme however they want to.
A couple of years ago we put on a similar extravaganza for Event400, we attracted in excess of 700 participants that day, can we push for a new attendance record? We'll certainly try.
There is a very high proportion of Pegasus residents in our participants each week, it would be great to see even more join us.
It's easy to do, jump onto our website www.parkrun.co.nz and let the prompts take you through registration, print your personal barcode, bring that along on Saturday and you're "good to go" there's plenty of info on the website too.
Looking forward to our big happening but also, we are looking forward to meeting new parkrunners.
See you soon!

CAB
has issued a new Spotlight
report: Kia manaaki i te manene Respecting and protecting migrant workers
This report analyses approximately 1,000 enquiries by migrants to the CAB which were identified as potential experiences of exploitation and were received between May 2024 - 2026.
CAB enquiries show that migrant exploitation is occurring across multiple industries, occupations, and regions, and that exploitative practices are experienced in various forms and severity.
This report highlights the serious consequences for migrants experiencing exploitation and their families. CAB enquiries show that exploitation is frequently compounded by complex immigration processes and delays. The report identifies actionable insights asking for coordinated system change and instigation of support so that migrants can work in safety and dignity, and so decisionmakers, service providers, and communities can act with greater confidence and urgency. You can download a copy of the report here Kia manaaki i te manene - Respecting and protecting migrant workers.
