It has become a cliché to say who could have imagined what the year would bring, but the sentiment certainly is true. This has been a year like no other. As I reflect on the year, I say with confidence that the Wabash Valley Community Foundation measured up and nimbly lived our mission as times quickly got tough. In March, we immediately implemented a Rapid Response grant process to provide support to entities on the front lines helping our communities. We then partnered with the United Way of the Wabash Valley to create the Wabash Valley COVID-19 Relief Fund. Over a period of a few months, the fund granted over $1.1 million to organizations most impacted by the health, economic and social impacts of COVID-19. Local businesses, government and nonprofit organizations faced unprecedented stressors during the spring. Many of our friends and neighbors lost work and needed assistance with basic needs. Museums and cultural organizations that make our community a vibrant place to live were faced with significant loss of revenue. First responders and healthcare organizations lacked resources to purchase the PPE and other equipment they needed. The donors of the Wabash Valley Community Foundation helped so many of these important community partners continue to meet their missions during COVID-19. I am proud and grateful for the work that was accomplished.

I also am grateful to the staff and board of the Wabash Valley Community Foundation. The staff transitioned to at-home, online work without missing a beat. Board participation remained strong through the pandemic. An important measure of any nonprofit board is the commitment of the individual members to the mission of the organization. Our Wabash Valley, Sullivan and Clay boards are deeply committed. Every board member made a financial gift to the Community Foundation. Our 100% board participation rate in giving made us eligible for a grant from Lilly Endowment Inc., which will strengthen donor engagement in Clay, Sullivan and Vigo counties. I expect to see exciting results from this work over the next few years. Thank you for your generosity of time, treasure and talent during 2020. Together, we have been true to our mission and our community. I look forward to days in the near future when we can all join together, with our donors, in person.

COVID-19 RESPONSE
COVID-19 RESPONSE RAPIDLY MEETING THE CHALLENGES For nearly 30 years, the Community Foundation has provided grant dollars to support vital efforts in Clay, Sullivan and Vigo counties. From our earliest days, we have worked with local partners across our communities to improve our residents’ health, support education and advance the quality of life. In any year, it is the generosity of community-minded individuals that makes our work a success. As the pandemic unfolded, the importance of having discretionary philanthropic resources available to actively address COVID-19 response, relief and recovery only became more apparent.
Within days of the first case being reported in the Wabash Valley, the Community Foundation established a Rapid Response grant process, awarded emergency grants for personal protective equipment (PPE) to first responders and collaborated with United Way of the Wabash Valley to support immediate economic stability. Though the effects of the pandemic will continue to impact our communities in unforeseen ways, the Community Foundation stands ready to provide response, relief and recovery to our nonprofit community.

SERVING OUR COMMUNITIES The Community Foundation is proud to serve our communities by partnering with individuals, nonprofit organizations, educational institutions and municipal entities to improve the quality of life in the Wabash Valley. Our ability to do this begins with community-minded individuals who contribute to the Community Foundation. Their contributions are then pooled and invested in permanent endowments that grow over time. The
earnings from these investments create a renewable source of funding used to make grants that will benefit our communities forever. The grants awarded to our nonprofit partners strengthen our communities by enriching lives, safeguarding health, enhancing educational efforts, cultivating the arts and more. Together, we are working to make a positive impact in our communities.
INCREASING THE CAPACITY OF NONPROFIT AGENCIES JUMPSTART FUNDRAISING COHORT In order to create the lasting impact our donors, boards and committees envision, local nonprofit organizations must be financially-resilient, with the capacity to deliver services and sustain impact. Transforming nonprofit organizations’ financial sustainability is is not something that can be achieved in a single year or through a single grant. With this in mind,the Community Foundation spent two years conducting research on how to strengthen local nonprofit organizations in capacity building and working toward greater sustainability. In late 2019, the Community Foundation entered into a partnership with Network for Good to offer the Jumpstart Fundraising Program to eligible grantees. This unique, investment-like program enabled participants to increase
their fundraising outcomes while decreasing costs by combining personal coaching, professional services, software and an evidence-based framework into an immersive, yearlong program. After one year of committed fundraising utilizing the skills learned in the Program, participants could expect to see an average increase of 34% in contributions to build their organizational capacity. The Jumpstart program costs $10,400 per nonprofit organization. The Community Foundation invested $62,400 and secured a $1-for-$1 matching grant from Network for Good to provide 12 local nonprofit organizations with nearly $125,000 in targeted, technical fundraising assistance to help expand their capacity to raise funds.

TERRE HAUTE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA JUMPSTART PARTICIPANT For the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra (THSO), Network for Good’s donor management system has been a saving grace. Prior to enrolling in the Jumpstart Program, THSO relied heavily on spreadsheets for its patron contact information and donations. “We were manually writing thank you letters and inserting names into spreadsheets,” explained Samantha (Sammy) Johnson-Helms, Executive Director for the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra. “We only had one person in the office full-time, so it took a lot of time and effort. With Network for Good, we are able to immediately enter donations we receive, as well as keep track of thank you letters and acknowledgments. We have also been able to use a texting feature to quickly and easily reach our patrons.” Johnson-Helms explained that, prior to Network for Good, the THSO had five recurring donors. In utilizing the Program, the THSO increased the number of recurring donors from five to 38 and experienced an increase in active donors.

IMPROVING RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
Since its inception in the late 1980s, the Clay Youth Soccer Club has provided an affordable soccer experience for children in Clay County who want to improve their soccer skills. As a nonprofit soccer club in a small, rural community, providing opportunities similar to clubs found in larger areas has been challenging; however, the Club is committed to providing quality experiences to its players. In 2013, the Clay Youth Soccer Club joined the Indiana Soccer League (ISL) to offer travel soccer for boys and girls ages 8-19. This offering has resulted in many Club players continuing to play at the college level. For five years, the Club was able to hold practices and games at Northview High School. Unfortunately, due to the expansion of other programs, the area became unavailable for Club use. As the Club survives on donations, fundraisers and modest annual fees, finding space large enough to hold games and practices was a struggle.

In 2018, the City of Brazil offered land at Craig Park for the Club to develop its soccer fields, allowing the Club to continue providing an affordable soccer experience for area youth. Volunteers have since spent countless hours working, fertilizing and seeding the ground to make the 2.5 acres of land playable. With the help of a $20,000 grant from the Clay County Community Foundation, the Club has started to build fields for every age group at Craig Park to expand and improve the experience for area youth, as well as purchase new equipment, new goals and a storage building.

SERVING OUR COMMUNITIES
ADDRESSING FOOD INSECURITY The unfortunate reality is that many Hoosiers do not know when or where they might receive their next meal. All too often, it is the youngest of Hoosiers who suffer the most from food insecurity. At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Indiana Youth Institute identified 1 in 4 Hoosier children as being food insecure. Since the onset of the pandemic, organizations and communities have been working relentlessly to provide food for hungry individuals. When schools abruptly closed last March, food banks, churches, schools, community organizations and afterschool programs pivoted to create new methods of food distribution. This challenge was exacerbated due to the increase in Hoosiers suffering from food insecurity resulting from job loss. In Indiana, those living in rural areas tend to have higher rates of food insecurity. Israel Brewer, President of the Brown Bagger Program in Sullivan County, reported his organization’s service numbers were at their highest due to the pandemic.
Ten years ago, Israel and his wife, Kay, learned that children in Sullivan County were going hungry over the weekends and on breaks when school was not in session. This prompted them to establish the Brown Bagger Program to purchase, bag and distribute food to Sullivan County schools for food insecure children. As their awareness regarding food insecurity grew, the program evolved into the Brown Baggers School Food Program to provide children with nutritious, easy-to-prepare meals. With over 1,500 food insecure children in Sullivan County, Brown Baggers and volunteers meet each week to bag food items for children. Weekly numbers vary, with roughly 500 bags being sent home or delivered to Sullivan County children every weekend. In an effort to help address food insecurity, the Sullivan County Community Foundation awarded a $5,000 grant to the Brown Bagger School Food Program for the purchase of food items for Sullivan County students.

COMMUNITY GRANT FUNDS Among the most flexible forms of giving, these funds allow the Community Foundation to respond to immediate needs such as the COVID-19 pandemic and emerging community opportunities over time. Because these funds are not restricted to any specific agency or cause, the potential impact is unlimited.
FIELD OF INTEREST FUNDS Support the causes and issues near and dear to your heart. This type of fund allows you to champion distinct areas of interest without naming a specific nonprofit agency. You may choose a charitable focus area such as education, youth or the elderly and the Community Foundation will award grants to nonprofit agencies meeting the need.
AGENCY ENDOWED FUNDS Established by nonprofit agencies to provide financial support in perpetuity, Agency Endowed Funds are a simple way for nonprofit agencies to create an annual stream of income and take advantage of the financial management, administrative resources and expertise of the Community Foundation.
DESIGNATED FUNDS If you regularly contribute to one or more charitable agencies, a Designated Fund would allow you to contribute your financial support forever.
SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS DONOR ADVISED FUNDS Created by individuals, families and organizations, Donor Advised Funds allow you to recommend different grant recipients each year.
If you want to help students pursue a post-secondary education, consider a Scholarship Fund. These funds are created by individuals, families and organizations wishing to memorialize a loved one, encourage a certain field of study or extend a helping hand for college-bound students.

First offered in 1998 by Lilly Endowment Inc., the purpose of the Lilly Endowment Scholarship Program is to help raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana and to further leverage the ability of Indiana’s community foundations to enhance the quality of life of the state’s residents. Lilly Endowment Community Scholars are chosen by local volunteers from their county. They receive full tuition and an annual book stipend for four years at a four-year Indiana college or university. Giving to the Community Foundation is flexible in that you can give to an existing fund or establish your own. You can also choose to make a gift to a Community Grant Fund in Clay, Sullivan or Vigo counties, allowing the Community Foundation to build resources that will provide grants that impact the lives of each county’s citizens now and in the future.

IN MEMORIAM | JUDY HARRIS, 1951-2020 Judy Harris was a founding member of the Sullivan County Community Foundation. She completed her term as the Sullivan County President and Sullivan County Representative to the Wabash Valley board just prior to her death. Judy was well-known for her generosity of time, talent and treasure in supporting nonprofit organizations throughout the community. Sullivan
County, and the Wabash Valley as a whole, benefited from Judy’s hard work, determination and support in making our communities better places to work and live. We have lost a generous, kind and thoughtful member of the Community Foundation family.
