It takes a good stockman and serious commitment to select and feed the animals to achieve the best results. It was also pleasing to see Angus cattle dominate as purebred and/or used in a cross-bred program to produce carcasses of such quality in these competitions. Angus breeder’s use of Breedplan, supported by a huge amount of historic and current data, has led to all round improvement of the breed in birth ease, growth, mothering ability, carcass qualities and phenotypical soundness. Just a reminder, that to able to maintain the JBAS score of 8, faecal samples need to be sent for analysis before 30 June 2018. During the March AGM it was reported 1

Welcome to the June 2018 newsletter. The WA Angus News is changing from this edition going forward and there will now only be 2 issues in January and June!! The June newsletter will be remaining in the current format but the January WA Angus News will be different.
The January edition will now be a larger magazine style publication that will hopefully modernise the WA Angus News. 2018 Farm Weekly & WA Angus 10 Angus Heifers Winners
Strathtay Trophy WA Angus AGM
A couple in the midst of moving properties to pursue a passion for livestock are the winners of the 2018 Farm Weekly & WA Angus Breeders win 10 Angus heifers competition.
Congratulations to Wes Graham on receiving the Strathtay Trophy at this years AGM. Pictured (L - R) in the photo below are Mark Hattingh (WA Angus Chairman), Fran Graham, Wes Graham and Tony Sudlow (outgoing WA Angus Chairman).
Having sold his half of the farm at Northam which has been in his family for four generations, Michael O’Neill and his wife Vicki will continue farming at Boyup Brook and it will now be with the addition of 10 ‘Southern Sensations’ Angus heifers and a brand new Can-Am black Angus motorbike - the haul makes a prize pool valued at $25,400.
The winning ticket was drawn by stalwarts of the Angus breed who are celebrating their 50th year as members of the WA Angus Society, John and Beth McKay. The couple previously ran the super successful Wilson Downs Angus stud, Cunderdin. The 10 Angus heifers were sourced from the Kalgan-based herd of Jarrod and Sarah Carroll, Rayview Park Pty Ltd and the motorbike from Seadoo Sport & Leisure, Belmont, with both provided courtesy of Farm Weekly and WA Angus breeders. The competition is in its 11th year and its popularity continues to grow, evidenced this year with more than 14,000 entries received which was 40 per cent more than last year’s record number. WA Angus Society Chairman Mark Hattingh said it was exciting for the breed to see the success of the competition. “We are very grateful to Farm Weekly for making this possible,” Mr Hattingh said. “I also want to thank member Bruce Campbell for his efforts in helping with the promotion and organisation and in particular to the 32 Angus breeders who contributed this year. Hopefully we’ll have even more next year.”

The next step was to put them on two – one on a heifer with calf, the other on our pet cow who happens to be in a paddock next the house to check and see if information would be relayed some 3.5kms to the base station. This is still ongoing (as this is typed on 12th May) – the calved heifer lost her collar (including the antenna) and we are still to fix a smaller replacement antenna to

Harvey Beef has been pleased to see the success of local producers recently at the Beef Australia 2018 Carcase competition where Harvey Beef processed over 90 carcasses which were entered into the competition. It was an outstanding night with WA producers taking out the top spots in Classes 1, 2 and 3 respectively. An additional 4 carcases placed in the top 3 of their categories.
This module on Bull Selection will be looking in depth at some of the things that you need to consider when selecting your next bull. These topics include:
WA cattle farmer and long-term Harvey Beef producer AS & M Campbell swept the board in the overall categories taking out Reserve Champion Pen Award, Highest Pen Award, Reserve Champion Carcase & the much coveted top spot of Overall Champion Carcase. It was another outstanding year for the 4th Harvey Beef Gate2Plate Challenge, with an exceptionally high standard of entries and strong performance from many Angus bred cattle.
