Tamara Dworetz

Guest

Conductor

American conductor Tamara Dworetz is driven by her belief in the power of classical music to inspire, spread joy, and enrich the human experience. Dworetz’s 2025-26 season includes debuts with the Las Vegas Philharmonic, Symphony of Northwest Arkansas (SoNA), and Wintergreen Music Festival. Tamara is in her third season as Artistic Director & Conductor of the Georgia Philharmonic.

Dworetz has conducted the Cincinnati Symphony, St. Louis Symphony, Boston Pops, Sarasota Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, Atlanta Ballet Orchestra, Arkansas Symphony, Amarillo Symphony, Paris Mozart Orchestra, Dallas Opera Orchestra, Boulder Philharmonic, Cabrillo Festival Orchestra, and Mankato Symphony. Recently, Tamara conducted her first staged opera, Bizet’s Carmen. She has served as an assistant and/or cover conductor for the Orchestre de Paris (Klaus Mäkelä), Gürzenich Orchestre Cologne (François-Xavier Roth), BBC Concert Orchestra (Bramwell Tovey), Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (Nathalie Stutzmann), and Minnesota Orchestra (Johnathon Heyward & Marta Gardolińska). She won 2nd prize in the Boston Pops’ Leonard Bernstein Conducting Competition, and was a recipient of the Bruno Walter Conducting Fellowship at the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music selected by Cristian Măcelaru.

Tamara is featured in a Netflix documentary Maestra, directed by Maggie Contreras and produced by David Letterman. The

film centers around five conducting participants in the 2022 La Maestra Conducting Competition and Academy for Women Conductors in Paris, France and has been highlighted by the New York Times, LA Times and CBS National News, as well as international film festivals including Tribeca, where it was premiered. In the 2022 competition, Tamara was the only USborn conductor and earned a spot as one of six semi-finalists.

A devoted music educator, Tamara’s musical beginnings took place in the Atlanta public school system and she is passionate about fostering enriching musical experiences for K-12 and pre-professional musicians. She serves as Associate Conductor of Carnegie Hall’s National Youth Orchestras, NYOUSA & NYO2, and has traveled on their South American Tour, assisting Marin Alsop and Jean-Yves Thibaudet. Tamara is Director of Orchestral Studies at Georgia State University and Charles Thomas Wurm Distinguished Professor in Instrumental Music. She has served guest conducting residencies at University of Texas Butler School of Music, Boston University School of Music, SUNY Fredonia School of Music, and the Longy Conservatory Orchestra at Bard College. She has guest conducted All-State Orchestras in Texas, Virginia, Indiana, Colorado, Georgia and Washington (All-Northwest), as well as the Atlanta Music Project, and has worked with the Atlanta, Austin, Emory and Boston Youth Orchestras. She maintains a graduate conducting studio at Georgia State University and has led conducting workshops for music educators and young musicians.

Tamara and her husband, Stephen, live in Chamblee, Georgia with their daughter and pup.

“In my humble opinion, the music from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet suites is some of the most beautiful, haunting and open-hearted music ever written. While the concert title Behind the Mask points towards the secrecy in these stories’ narratives, the music itself wears its emotions ‘on its sleeve,’ completely unmasked; the power of Prokofiev’s writing will take you on an emotional rollercoaster ride.”
–Tamara Dworetz

Ways to support SoNA

Overture Society

Gifts of any size to the Overture Society provide general operating support for concerts, education programs, community outreach, and administrative expenses.

Chair Sponsorships

Chair Sponsorships support the musicians in the orchestra and help SoNA attract and retain the best talent in the region. A gift of $2,500 will support a Principal musician for a season. A gift of $1,750 will support an Associate Principal position, and a gift of $1,000 will support a section musician.

The Maestro’s Circle

Members of the Maestro’s Circle are donors who have committed to multi-year gifts of $5,000 or more annually. Contributions to the Maestro’s Circle help support the financial stability and long-term growth of SoNA.

Legacy Gifts

Planned charitable bequests to SoNA help to ensure that our mission of bringing great music to life in Northwest Arkansas will continue for generations to come. For assistance with bequests, including gifts of stock, please contact Greenwood Gearhart, Inc. at (479) 521-5353.
