A Day in the Life of a Volunteer Dave volunteers with Ayrshire Coastal Path, and with Walking Scotland where he is the Walk Leader for a weekly Health Walk in Troon. On a Wednesday night every week he checks the weather forecast for the following day and plans the route for the Thursday morning walk. The aim of the health walk is to improve the fitness levels of the people taking part, increase their confidence, and to create social connections. Dave always arrives early to meet everyone - there are normally between 15 and 20 people on each walk. The walks last around an hour and everyone then splits into smaller groups to go for a coffee. Keeping fit is important to Dave and he walks everyday so Walking Scotland was the ideal volunteer opportunity for him He says, “It has been really rewarding seeing how much the walks mean to the people taking part and making friends (I include myself in this). As a walk leader I like the fact that other people benefit from me giving up a little of my time. So, if we have 15 walkers say, that means that 15 other people benefit from my hour walk every Thursday. There’s enough rubbish in the world just now, and it’s just nice to do something good.”

A Day in the Life of a Volunteer Damien is a 19 year old who volunteers at Doon Valley Railway as a guard. The guard is primarily responsible for the safety of the train and its passengers, but also for engaging with visitors. “A typical Sunday open day starts bright and early for all volunteers as we meet on site at 9am. Upon arrival I will sign myself in and find my radio before heading into the Loco Shed and climbing aboard the coach. Once aboard, I will work with the Coach Controller to prepare the coach for the day ahead. This involves activating the coach’s electrical equipment, building air pressure for the braking system and general cleaning inside the coach. Upon completion, we will head to the café for a morning roll and a hot drink at around 10am. After breakfast, we’ll return to the coach and couple it up with the locomotive. In coordination with the locomotive crew, the brakes are released and we head down the hill into Dunaskin station. We then welcome passengers onboard for our first train of the day. We operate trains from 11:00 until 15:45. Upon arrival back from our last trip I will assist the Station Master to close up the station before we carry out the same shunt procedure from the morning in reverse. Once all our rolling stock is safely stored and the shed is secured, I’ll head up to the shop, sign-out and call it a day at roughly 17:00. Outside volunteering, I am a third-year student at the University of Glasgow, studying Geography while also juggling my training as an Irish Dancer. Volunteering at the Doon Valley Railway fits perfectly into my schedule as I have more time throughout the summer to help on Sunday open days, while in the winter I can escape the madness of university and training to help on a Saturday.”
