FINDING THE SPIRIT in a world that can be cold and cruel, warming to the holidays has never been more important BY TOM GIFFEY
G
etting into the holiday spirit can be difficult. There are the seasonal tasks that get in the way. The buying of gifts, the mailing of cards, the cooking of treats, the preparing of the house for the arrival of family and friends, and the repairing of the house after the departure of those family and friends. There are also the everyday annoyances that get in the way. The crowded stores and parking lots, the blustery weather, the frayed tempers, and all the tasks of work and life that don’t simply vanish because of the holidays. In fact, everyday tasks seem to pile especially high this time of year. And then there is the weight of the wider world that can hold us down. Events near and far that impact us directly and indirectly can make holiday celebrations seem lackluster at best and cruel jokes at worst. There is warfare and famine. Refugees driven from their homes. Political conflict unseen in generations. Homelessness on our streets. Hate-driven killings in schools and houses of worship. Senseless deaths of children far too young right here in the Chippewa Valley. What, in the face of all this daily drudgery and heart-wrenching tragedy, do we have to celebrate? What is there to be thankful for? These questions are difficult to answer. In fact, humans have been trying to answer them for as long as there
have been humans. I can’t answer these questions for everyone – only for myself. And, as a writer, the way I answer them is by looking at words. We call this time of year “the holidays” – a word that encompasses the religious and secular celebration of Christmas as well as the special dates that fall around it on the calendar, including Hanukkah, New Year’s Eve, Kwanzaa, the Winter Solstice, Thanksgiving, and more. The word holiday, of course, is a combination of the words “holy” and “day” – or, if you prefer to be specific and Old English-y about it, halig and dæg. (Use those words to impress your Renaissance Faire friends!) For many of us, the holy is found via faith – in devotion to the goodness and righteousness we believe comes VOLUME ONE 2018

from something higher than ourselves, something divine. In difficult and stressful times, this is what we turn to, what sustains us. Christmas is a candle that shines during the darkest time of the year. For others among us, the holy is found not in a higher power, but in the goodness of human decency, in the stillness of the natural world, in the awe sparked by an infinite universe. In difficult and stressful times, turning toward these things can sustain us. For all of us, each day can be holy. Each morning that the sun rises can be a dawn of renewal and hope. Whatever our beliefs or traditions, focusing on this – not the self-imposed stresses of everyday life or the tragedies of the latest news cycle – is the real reason to be thankful, the real reason to have hope, the real reason to find the holiday spirit.

PINEHURST HILL, EAU CLAIRE
MICHAEL LUNDEBREK
SLEDDING HILLS
Nothing brings a family together like cramming together on a little plastic sled to shoot down a hill. Drainage Ditch Run Menomonie • It’s a crazy drainage ditch on the southeastern side of Lake Menomonie that leads out onto the lake. It might be a lot of fun, but definitely watch out for the black ice.
Dunn County Snow Park 620 17th St SE, Menomonie • On the east side of the fairgrounds, there’s a hill that the water tower sits on, ominously looming over the site. Volunteers have recently spend a lot of time clearing brush, stumps, and debris from the hill, then setting up erosion precautions to create a low maintenance yet fun place for local snow goers. Like any hill, it’s still “ride at your own risk.”
The Flats Hill Eau Claire • Look to the left going down Pumphouse Road hill, descending from the East Hill of Chippewa Falls, and you’ll find winter bliss just waiting. A sledding hill for all ages and skill levels, this place is wide open, with little to no risk of hitting any trees. Be careful of your speed, though, because legends of the hill have been known to clear the train tracks with one epic run.
Forrest Hill aka “Seven Bumps” aka “Dead Man’s Hill” Eau Claire • Right next to the Forrest Hill Cemetery (on Huebsch Boulevard) on the East Side Hill, the slope is small and gentle with no major obstacles. (Just the thing for weak-hearted novices.) In recent years, its easy accessibility has made it a favorite among area snowboarders, but don’t be intimidated by them. If there is an altercation over a collision, they will have a hard time chasing you with their feet strapped to those boards.
Mount Simon 100 Addison Ave., Eau Claire • 49-acre park located on Dell’s Pond with access off either Madison Street or Birch Street. This park offers a boat
landing and dock, 2 picnic pavilions, 2 lighted sand volleyball courts, and an 9-hole disc golf course. Mt. Simon Park is also home to Eau Claire’s Babe Ruth Baseball program.
Northern Wisconsin State Fairgrounds Back Entrance 225 Edward St., Chippewa Falls • The walk-in entrance to the grounds across from Irvine Park provides a perfect pat to safely walk to the top of a rather steep hill. Low person-on-tree collision rates have kept local kids sliding there for years.
Oakwood Hills Eau Claire • There’s a great little (unsupervised) hill near the Oakwood Hills Warming House on Golf Road. The hill is open Sat. and Sun. 1-6pm, and could be a pleasant alternative to some of the aforementioned and slightly more treacherous places.
Pinehurst Hill 3523 Delbert Road, Eau Claire • eauclairewi.gov On Eau Claire’s north side, the behemoth Pinehurst Hill stands as the mother of all sledding hills. This formidable giant was a downhill ski run with a towrope throughout the early 70s. Be careful: if you don’t brake or turn, you’ll end up in a parking lot. Try not to hit anyone climbing up the hill, and pay attention so you don’t get hit yourself.
UWEC Campus Hill Eau Claire • Feeling adventurous, or perhaps like getting flat-out arrested? It has long been rumored that the most exciting hill in Eau Claire is also one of the most rare. With the perfect conditions, “The Hill” shooting down from upper campus gets covered with freezing rain then snow and becomes completely impassible. Mach 2 is potentially capable, but make sure to dodge the gate at the bottom... and the cops.
X-Hill Eau Claire • Just across the road from Chippewa Valley Airport’s runways, it’s a real treat when jets fly overhead, close enough that you can feel your chest rattle. A crisscross hill unofficially called the “X-Hill,” you can start at one of two steep, twin trajectories that cross each other at a wicked intersection before going off in any number of directions. This is never the same ride twice and the risk for some intense crashes is high. So if you are on the hill, consider yourself forewarned and, therefore, fair game.

REJECTION LETTERS FROM SANTA
colorful correspondence between area folks and the big, bearded guy
Dear Santa, We have a bit of a purr-oblem. The biggest trend in lifestyle publishing at the meow-ment is to feature Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and all that’s happening there. It’s paws-atively a hotbed of progress and innovation! But unfortunately, there’s not much special happening cat-wise in western Wisconsin. For Christmas, could you give Eau Claire something to attract feline fanatics? National cat show? Cat spa? A production of the musical Cats where everyone gets a cat to hold in their lap? Then we could run an article and feel like we belong too! Thanks Santa!
– TABBY WHI SKERSON, E DITOR OF “C ATSTER” (FORMERLY “C AT FANCY ”) MAGAZINE Dear Ms. Whiskerson, I have to be honest here. I’m not really a cat person. Or a dog person, for that matter. I’m a reindeer person. At the end of the day, Blitzen and Donner come curl up right in my lap, and it’s very special (excusing the occasional antler in the windpipe, of course). So while I won’t bring anyone cats, I can offer a suggestion. It probably wouldn’t take too much to turn the old Kmart building into a feral cat colony. Just sayin’. Happy Howl-idays (sheesh),

–A LOCAL ARTS ENTHUSIAST ON THEIR WAY TO A SHOW AT THE PABLO CENTER AT THE CONFLUENCE Dear ALAEOTWTASATPCATC, More complaining about parking, huh? Well, let’s try this. I’ll swing by and drive your Kia or whatever you’ve got down to the Tonic Sol Fa show. You take the sleigh, with all nine reindeer. Tell me, have you ever parallel parked a full-size sledge? And please, try the parking ramp. See how they feel about oversize vehicles. Point is, you don’t know how good you’ve got it. I so much as want to get dinner at Houligans and I have to park on the other side of Boyd Park. So, enough whining about parking, mmm’kay?

Mister Kringle, So, apparently, to be a “cool” town these days, you have to have some fancy development? Mixed-use whatever the hell, with bike paths and amphitheaters and all that garbage? All I have to say is, thanks River Prairie and Altoona. For nothing. Since the old raceway isn’t cutting it, could we get a development, too? It’s what we need, I guess. Thanks,
Dear Saint Nick, So, Catster tells us you’re helping magazines find reasons to write about Eau Claire. What’s up with the city’s cigar scene? Sincerely,
—SM OKY PUFFSTEI N, E DI TOR OF ‘C I GAR AF F ICIA N A D O’ Dear Smoky, Well, Kwik Trip sells those Swisher Sweets. And I keep reading stories about vaping. Does that count? I work with kids, so I kind of need to steer clear of tobacco, if you know what I mean. Don’t tell anyone I wrote you back.
–ROCK FALLS Dear Rock Falls, Which one are you again? Did you used to have the elementary school, or are you the one with the cheese house? You’re on the way to Durand, right? Either way, we’ve got charming small towns coming out of our ears around here. You need something more urban than an amphitheater. How about … Rock Falls Ultra Luxury Condos and Danceteria? You like hipsters, right? Merry Christmas,
Santa
Hey Santa, We’re getting a little nervous out here!
Santa
—OAK WO O D MA LL Dear Oakwood, Yikes. You’re down three anchor stores now, right? That’s not good. Ummm … does Scheel’s want to expand again? Or … How big of a Kwik Trip would they be willing to build? Maybe a Younkerssized version? Good luck!
Dear Great Christmas Elf, It has been such a good year for waterways in the Chippewa Valley. Just not for me. It seems like everyone got new pedestrian footbridges, or remodels to their existing pedestrian footbridges, or fancy new causeways, or brilliant lights that twinkle off the surface of the water like a thousand colorful gems. But I’ve been flowing through Eau Claire’s west side for centuries, and I didn’t get anything. For Christmas do you think I could get some sort of urban-pedestrian feature designed to attract locals to my banks? Thanks Santa,
Santa
P.S. Thanks for your letter – reminds me I haven’t had a hot pretzel in eons!
Dear Mr. Kringle, As long as you’re finding reasons for publications to write about Eau Claire, maybe you can thwack something through our wicket? Thanks!
– S H E RM AN CREEK Dear Sherman Creek, Here’s the thing … People like big bodies of water. Chippewa River, Half Moon Lake, that sort of thing. Do you really think if we installed a scenic overlook with a skate park and food truck stalls that suddenly Sherman Creek Park out there would become a big draw? I’m afraid not. So, I’ve got a board we can lay across you, and an old rope we can tie between two trees as a handhold, if you don’t mind rope splinters. Hope that helps.

A CHRISTMAS-Y A CHRISTMAS STORY STORY don’t shoot your eye out with this holiday classic WORDS BY MIKE PAULUS / ILLUSTRATION BY SERENA WAGNER
I
t’s the very end of November, so have you watched A Christmas Story yet? No? Did you hear that it’s the very end of November? You better get on that. Make some popcorn. Call some friends. Make a ho-ho-holiday night of it. I’ll pass. For many who observe the obscure holiday/religious celebration/blowout flat screen TV sale known as “Christmas,” this film easily makes the short list for “Greatest Holiday Movie of All Time Whoo!” And I get it. I do. I appreciate movies injected with a good dose of nostalgia. I like purposely cartoony depictions of life in the 1940s. I love table lamps shaped like sexy legs and tongues stuck to flagpoles and little brothers wearing too much winter clothing. However, the film has some pretty
glaring problems. The pacing is all over the place. The cinematography is kinda dull. The child actors are darn near unwatchable in some scenes. And let’s be honest, the last scene of the movie features a pretty racist depiction of Chinese-Americans. The whole thing’s a veritable schlock fest of trite, uninspired ... Damn, I can’t do it. I can’t go on lying to you. Some of the points I just listed are valid, but the real reason I don’t like A Christmas Story is this: Santa kicks the kid in the face. Am I alone here? Is this one scene
from a sentimental holiday movie not the cruelest fictional act of inhumanity ever preserved on film? Who wrote the stuff? Apparently, American radio/ TV personality, writer, and actor Jean Shepherd did. And he’s a bastard. Ol’ four-eyed Ralphie spends the entire third act of the film pinning his hopes and dreams – the culmination of his pre-adolescent desire, an official Red Ryder carbine-action, 200-shot, range model air rifle – on Santa Claus. When all the other adults in his life have failed him, he turns to the Big Guy, the one man society has told him
“I CAN’T GO ON LYING TO YOU. SOME OF THE POINTS I JUST LISTED ARE VALID, BUT THE REAL REASON I DON’T LIKE A CHRISTMAS STORY IS THIS: SANTA KICKS THE KID IN THE FACE.” VOLUME ONE 2018

is somehow capable of making wishes come true. What could go wrong? Mike Paulus’s little heart could be crushed into a goopy pile of pain and despair, that’s what. On that fateful day in the department store, Ralphie waits forever to see Santa Claus. The line is long and filled with idiots of all kinds. When he finally – finally – gets unceremoniously tossed onto Santa’s lap, he freezes. The moment is terrifying. He’s being cradled by a man with godlike powers and there’s a huge crowd of people watching. He can’t speak. He can’t think. I know the feeling! Santa suggests a football and then the cackling elves rip Ralphie away and throw him down a garbage chute fun holiday slide. All is lost. But wait! Ralphie digs deep. He stops himself mid-slide and bravely scampers back up the slide to triumphantly tell Mr. Claus, No, no! I want an official Red Ryder carbine-action, 200-shot, range model air rifle. He did it! And then Santa kicks him in the face. OK, it’s more of a nudge on the forehead, but Santa’s boot pushes Ralphie back down the slide like a wad of wrapping paper into which you spat a wad of Aunt Bev’s garlic fudge. When I first saw this as a child, I was horrified. The image of Santa’s boot on Ralphie’s face haunted me for years. As an adult, I can totally enjoy the film. (Let’s be honest, it’s not really a kids’ movie.) But to this day, I can still feel a nugget of dread form in my stomach when it comes on the television. You know, I don’t even like Ralphie all that much. He’s kind of a wuss. But I’ll be damned if my heart doesn’t leap when he slams his big rubber boots into the sides of that slide as if to say, “You’ve been kickin’ me in my husky-sized pants all year, Life! BUT NOT TODAY!” And then Santa kicks him. In the face. For me, this movie is a prime example of why you should never meet your heroes. Sure, Santa seems all cool, hanging out with the reindeer and the talking snowmen, sipping hot chocolate and all that. But it turns out he’s just a sadistic jerk who doesn’t really care about you or your hopes and dreams. I know it all works out in the end and Ralphie learns a valuable lesson about family and air rifle safety, but wow. That scene did a number on my preteen psyche. I guess that’s just part of the holidays. Don’t even get me started on Rudolph’s dad.
