Welcome to the Summer Edition of the Shrivenham Community Magazine.

o much has happened over the last few months that it’s difficult to recap all events. From Oxford County Council’s Civil Military Partnership visit to the Defence Academy in February, to Wine and Venison night in April, the Shrivenham community has been active. The Conservation Club has been busy planting trees and supporting numerous social events. The Scouts, Beavers and Guides have been non-stop providing weekly and holiday activities for our young community and the MWC and DAFFYs have continued to organise untold number of entertaining events. Most recently, special mention must be made of the outstanding contribution that DAFFYs volunteers made to the Station Security Exercise on 20th May.

The 27 volunteer protestors added a convincing element to an inject involving Thames Valley Police. The article photos speak for themselves – but there was clearly fun had by those taking part!

For many of you, this will be your last few months at the Defence Academy, and possibly in the UK, before returning home

overseas. I hope you will all have had a fulfilling year and will look back at your time at the Defence Academy with fond memories.

From Posting to Posting and Still One School

How can boarding school benefit my child’s education and who can advise me?

Shrivenham Station Welfare House

Shrivenham Station has 4 two-bedroom Welfare (Contact) Houses located on the Watchfield Estate on Folly Crescent (Post Code SN6 8SH). The houses can be used by Shrivenham Station PS and all Students, as a lower priority; external Military ID Card holders, Civil Servants and Contractors with a DMR Pass.

These houses are controlled by Shrivenham Station Welfare Officer. The Welfare Houses are not to be used as permanent accommodation and will only be booked for short term stays. The maximum length of occupation is 7 nights in any 28 night period. In very exceptional circumstances the Welfare Houses may be allocated for longer.

The Jubilee Community Centre

The Jubilee Community Centre provides facilities for Service Personnel and their families from both the United Kingdom and overseas together with all other Station Personnel.

The Jubilee Community Centre (JCC) is the home of the Station Welfare Officer, Welfare Warrant Officer and two Serco staff members. It is a place to meet old and new friends and families of different nationalities in a personal and friendly environment.

The JCC has two ‘soft play’ areas for young children (under 1 metre in height), a Wellness Room and a wide selection of toys. There is a café area where parents can enjoy refreshments from the vending machines.

Sensory Room

The centre also has a Sensory Room to enable families to take some time out with their little ones. You can: listen to sounds; watch the lights; feel different fabrics and textures; play with a selection of sensory toys or just sit and enjoy the calming space.

The Sensory Room is accessible in conjunction with soft play timings –just ask a member of staff on site for access.

Update from the Welfare Team

In April, we had fun with our Easter Hunt! Thank you to everyone who came along and took part.

We are always looking for new groups/ events/things to run so if you have any ideas, please contact a member of the Welfare Team.

For a small charge, Defence Academy Pass Holders can hire the JCC for private functions. Please contact the Welfare Team to find out more. Weekly activities are advertised on the noticeboard in the JCC and include craft & music sessions and Family Coffee Mornings.

In March, the winner of our logo competition was chosen. We had so many fabulous entries, we added a few runner-up prizes too. Each of the entries pictured won an Amazon voucher and each entry gave us lots of ideas to feed into a new logo for the Jubilee Community Centre.

Defence Academy Military Wives Choir

We’ve been keeping ourselves very busy since the last newsletter — and having a brilliant time while we’re at it!

Back in March, we headed to the Swindon Music Festival to take part in the adult choir class. With two other fantastic local choirs in the mix, we were absolutely thrilled to come away as winners! We had to perform two contrasting pieces to show off a bit of range, so we went with our much-loved ‘Viva La Vida/Titanium’ mash-up and a beautiful arrangement of ‘Amazing Grace’ that’s quickly become a favourite of ours.

The feedback from the adjudicator was just wonderful — she said we took to the stage with “military precision” (we rather liked that!) and praised everything from our smart appearance to our blend, balance and diction. The altos even got a special mention! All round; we were over the moon with her comments. The other choirs were brilliant too, but with a couple of small points for improvement, which meant we just edged it — what a moment!

We also have to give a big shout-out to our brilliant Musical Director, Anthony “Tone” Brown, who joined us last September. He’s brought so much energy

and enthusiasm to rehearsals, and we know we wouldn’t have had such a great result without him. And of course, our wonderful accompanist Bethany Brooke deserves a mention too — she’s a huge part of everything we do. Together, Beth and Tone are quite the dream team, and we’re very lucky to have them.

At the start of April, a group of our choir members had the incredibly special opportunity to travel to Ypres in Belgium to sing at the Menin Gate. The Last Post Ceremony takes place there every single day, and alongside other Military Wives Choirs members from across the country, they

performed ‘We Will Remember Them’ and ‘Carry Me.’ It was a very moving experience, and we’re incredibly proud of those who took part.

Later in April, we hosted our very first “Come and Sing” afternoon — and what a success it was! We welcomed 36 local ladies (no military connection required!) for an afternoon of music, learning, and of course plenty of tea and cake. Led by Tone and Beth, everyone got stuck into songs like ‘The Seal Lullaby,’ ‘May It Be,’ and ‘For Good.’ It was such a lovely event that we’re already thinking about doing it again… so watch this space!

Then, to kick off May, we teamed up once more with Swindon Male Voice Choir for a joint concert at

St Barnabas Church. It was great to sing alongside them again after our Christmas concert. We performed some joint pieces, including ‘You Raise Me Up,’ as well as a few of our own favourites like ‘Mr Blue Sky’ and ‘Fix You.’ Even better, proceeds from the evening went to SSAFA, so we were delighted to be supporting such an important cause.

Now we’re looking ahead to the summer term, with preparations already underway for our annual summer concert in July — more details coming soon! Celebrating St George on Dragon Hill

More than 100 people from 1st Watchfield & Shrivenham Scout Group gathered on Dragon Hill to mark St George’s Day, renewing their Scouting Promises in a special outdoor ceremony.

On a glorious morning at the end of April, 53 young people and 21 volunteer leaders – together with 23 parents, 2 grandparents, 7 siblings, and a representative from Oxfordshire Scouts – assembled for the ceremony on Dragon Hill beneath the 3000-year-old Uffington White Horse.

Helen Wright, the Group Scout Leader, explains: “Many of us will be familiar with the legend of how St George slew the fearsome dragon that was terrorising the people of Silene and demanding a human sacrifice every day. St George was later adopted as the patron saint of England. He was also chosen to be the patron saint of Scouting, because the founder of Scouts, Robert Baden-Powell, wanted Scouts to aspire to the qualities of courage, selflessness, and service shown by St George.

Baden-Powell wanted St George’s Day to be a moment when Scouts everywhere reflect on what it means to be a Scout, and we are doing this by renewing our Scouting Promises on Dragon Hill and enjoying

Each of the Sections (Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts) took their own route to Dragon Hill, where they gathered under blue skies for a short ceremony in which they welcomed two new leaders, presented a ‘Wood Badge’, reflected on the bravery of St George, and renewed their Scouting Promises. Each Section

then dispersed to separate activities – including a hike, games, and a map-reading quiz.

The morning was enjoyed by children and adults alike. An eight-year-old Cub Scout said: “I loved learning about St George and how he helped other people by getting rid of the dragon. I want to be brave like him.”

One of two Leaders making his Scouting Promise for the first time said: “It was a great event. When my son joined the Group in September I decided to get involved too and I can’t believe that eight months later I am proudly standing on Dragon Hill as a fully-fledged Cub Leader! Volunteering has been really

rewarding. I have learned so much about myself, have been welcomed and supported, and have lots of new friends. I’m looking forward to doing lots more with the Group.”

The Group was grateful for permission from the National Trust to meet on Dragon Hill –primarily a natural chalk landform carved by Ice Age meltwater. Helen said: “It was great to have so many people join our St George’s Day celebrations in this special place. There’s no evidence that St George ever visited England, but our own local legend tells that he slew the dragon on Dragon Hill beneath the Uffington White Horse and that the place where the grass refuses to grow marks

the spot where the dragon’s blood was spilt. It really was the perfect place to celebrate him, to welcome new members, and to thank the amazing volunteers who make it possible for our young people to have great experiences through Scouting.”

Beavers turns 40!

Twenty-five Beaver Scouts and seven Beaver Leaders from the 1st Watchfield & Shrivenham Scout Group came together to mark the 40th anniversary of Beaver Scouts with a ‘Big Beaver Birthday Bash’.

Beavers from the Barrington and the Beckett Colonies gathered at the Scout Hut on 7 March for an afternoon packed full of brilliant activities. They learned how to pitch a tent; made Beaver hand puppets from paper bags; sewed badges on their camp blankets; made ‘smores’ on the campfire; and competed in a lego zip-wire challenge. There was also, of course, a huge birthday cake to share!

Since its official launch in 1986, Beavers has delivered four decades of fun, friendship, and adventure for young people aged six to eight. The history of Beavers at 1st Watchfield & Shrivenham stretches back almost as far, to 1987, when Beavers opened with a membership of twentyfive Beavers and four leaders. Over the past 39 years, the Group has given hundreds of children from military and local civilian families the chance to enjoy a huge range of activities including den-building, nature walks, gardening, pond-dipping, wildlife conservation, climbing, katakanuing, crafts, pioneering, and rope-making.

Beavers continues to offer a broad and exciting programme designed to encourage young people to try new activities and learn new things; inspire curiosity, confidence, and kindness; and help young people build skills for life.

Defence Academy Golf Club

Established in 1956, the Defence Academy Golf Club offers a beautiful parkland 18hole golf club on your doorstep.

Set within the confines of the Shrivenham campus, the club provides a sporting and welfare facility for MOD employees and their families at the Defence Academy, enabling them to take up and enjoy the game of golf. The club is open to Service Personnel, MOD employees and contractors working on site, and their families, and to the wider military community located at nearby MOD sites. The club

welcomes veterans and has a bespoke membership pathway to encourage former Service Personnel to join this special club.

We are affiliated to England Golf, the governing body of golf in the UK, allowing members to achieve and maintain official handicaps. We offer a 5666-yard, Par 70 course made up of 14 greens (4 are shared), so you get the full 18-hole experience. In addition, members can use the practice range, a dedicated practice hole, a practice putting area and a netted bay for warming up before a round of golf. We recognise the demands on staff and students at the Defence Academy and offer membership packages or ‘pay & play’ options to suit your needs. The course is well suited to the needs of beginners, with excellent practice facilities and is less crowded than many public courses. What better way is there to relax and improve your wellbeing. Operating under the umbrella of the Defence Academy Athletics Union, the club is celebrating our 70th Anniversary in 2026, and special events will be held during this summer to help enjoy this

significant milestone in the club’s history.

The club offers a range of member competitions from April to October. The club championships are held in June each year. Matches against other military and civilian teams and clubs has always been part of the club’s activities. In addition, members take part in competitive and social golf team matches against other clubs across the Cotswolds, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire and Berkshire area, along with matches against military societies.

Charity Support

Social golf events provide a perfect opportunity for fund raising. The club supports two charities. The On Course Foundation, a charity that supports the recovery of wounded, injured or sick Service

Personnel , and veterans, through the medium of golf and more locally, the Pennyhooks Farm Trust, supporting young adults on the Autistic Spectrum. After the busy 2025 season, £1300 was raised, and each charity received £650 from the golf club.

Station Chaplaincy

Dear all,

Having been asked to write to you all for a number of months now, I guess the first thing to say is “hello.”

My name is Rev. John Swanston and I am the new Station Chaplain (Army) to the Defence Academy Shrivenham. I have served as a Regimental Chaplain to 1 Rifles, 32 Regiment RA, 47 Regiment RA, the Household Cavalry Regiment, 18 (UKSF) Signal Regiment and Senior Chaplain to the Defence School of Electronic and Mechanical Engineering. I assumed the role of Station Chaplain to the Defence Academy five months ago.

I see my role here as one which will allow me to serve and enable others within the Defence Academy community, regardless of belief, to fulfil their potential. What excites me most is that this isn’t just a job for me, it is my true vocation which has been reinforced by the tangible impact I have witnessed throughout my time as an Army Chaplain. As such, I have a keen interest in the fields of human wellbeing, resilience and flourishing.

I am married to my best friend, Johanna, and together we have three amazing teenage children, who have all settled in to this wonderful part of the country. So, I look forward to meeting all of you over the next two years. And remember, I am here to support, encourage and strengthen the Defence Academy community, regardless of who you are, so we all can truly thrive.

Shrivenham Station deepens ties with Oxfordshire’s Civilian Military Partnership

In February the Defence Academy welcomed members of the Oxfordshire County Council’s Civilian Military Partnership (CMP) to Shrivenham Station.

As part of the council’s wider programme of local engagement in support of the armed forces community, the visit brought together civilian and military partners committed to improving the lives of serving personnel, veterans and their families across Oxfordshire.

The CMP plays a key role in upholding the aims of the Armed Forces Covenant, drawing on a shared pool of expertise, skills, and resources to deliver practical, meaningful support. By fostering strong collaboration between local authorities, defence stakeholders, and community organisations, the partnership helps ensure that military families are not disadvantaged by their service and are able to thrive within the county.

Following an official welcome by the Defence Academy’s Chief of Staff,

Captain Steve McLaughlin RN, and Station Commander, Wing Commander Katherine Ingram, guests undertook tours of the Joint Services Command and Staff College (JSCSC) and the Defence College for Military Capability Integration (DCMCI). Briefings at each of these colleges offered insight into how the Academy prepares leaders, develops critical thinking skills, and integrates cutting-edge capability across the Services.

A working lunch provided further opportunities for networking and areas of discussion, including:

• Op LAZURITE community cohesion and local engagement support for Oxfordshire’s cadet forces

• Oxfordshire County Council’s

Future Generations programme, which aims to improve outcomes and opportunities for young people across the region

The day concluded with the CMP board meeting and a visit to the Royal Army Chaplains Department Museum. Both Oxfordshire County Council and armed forces representatives from across the county described the day as “a highly valuable chance to strengthen relationships and identify future areas for collaboration.”

Shrivenham Station continues to play a leading role within the local community, supporting the Armed Forces Covenant and working with partners to champion the needs and wellbeing of serving personnel, veterans, and their families.

Defence Academy Saddle Club

Supporting The Armed Forces Equine Charity

As part of The Armed Forces Equine Charity, Shrivenham Equestrian Centre (Defence Academy Saddle Club) was proud to be involved in supporting the delivery of a recent equine assisted health and wellbeing course for veterans.

Over a number of days, the participants are encouraged to build a relationship with a designated horse or pony using groundwork-based exercises, e.g. catching, grooming and leading the pony. Horses provide immediate, nonjudgemental feedback, helping participants recognize patterns in their behaviour, communication, and emotional responses. The course also includes classroombased sessions and various team building activities. We look forward to welcoming more veterans in the future.

This programme was coordinated by the Armed Forces Equine Charity, in partnership with HorseBack UK, providing specialist, trauma-informed support to veterans. Funded by the Veterans Foundation through the Veterans Active Recovery Programme.

The AIM ‘riding for the disabled’ group worked extremely hard in the run up to their regional competitions which took place in May. As a result, they came home laden with rosettes for both dressage and showjumping and have secured their place at the

national championships in July. We wish them lots of luck and can't wait to see all they achieve.

Our Pony Club children did their first PC exams of the year in April. We had 4 juniors take their D test and 3 seniors take their C test. We are very proud to say they all passed with flying colours and the examiner was very complimentary about the calibre of their riding and knowledge.

We are also attending several events through the summer, including Armed Forces Day at Lydiard Park in June and our annual fun dog show at The Uffington White Horse show in August. Do come see us there!

Defence Academy Shooting and Conservation Club

From Saplings to Spring Spectacles

As spring gathers pace across the Defence Academy estate, the Defence Academy Shooting and Conservation Club’s (DASCC) tree-planting efforts (DefAcNet) are bursting into life in a way that is hard to miss.

What began as rows of modest sapling whips just a couple of years ago has now transformed into hedgerows alive with colour and movement. Around the Explosive Range and Demonstration Area (ERDA), the young hedges are quite literally exploding into bloom. Hawthorn and Blackthorn are leading the way, their blossom cutting bright lines through the landscape, while Dog Rose, Crab Apple and Guelder Rose are beginning to show their seasonal character.

This is the payoff from a twoyear effort (DefAcNet) that saw nearly 2,000 trees planted by the Club. What once required a bit of imagination is now plainly visible: strong growth, high survival rates, and hedgerows that are starting to shape the ground.

The diversity of species is already doing its job. The hedges are not

just growing, they are becoming busy. Pollinators are moving in, insects are thriving, and the thickening structure is beginning to offer real cover for birds and small mammals. Previously open ground is turning into a proper, living edge habitat.

There is still more to come. These hedges will be laid in time and then managed on a cycle to keep them dense and productive, but this spring marks a clear milestone. The estate is starting to feel more alive, and the direction of travel is obvious.

DASCC has already planted another 400 trees this year alone and will continue building on this momentum, with conservation days running every two weeks. They remain a straightforward, family-friendly way to get outside, contribute to the estate, and see this transformation firsthand.

Several years ago, when posted to Shrivenham UK, I happily joined The Academy Quilters. Thoroughly enjoyed my time with them and learnt heaps. As expected, I had to sadly, I must confess, move on. Was asked whether I would have time to do a write up for the group but time was not on my side so I didn't. Now though, I am about to put that right. Here follows my long overdue contribution as a big, big thank you for all the support and encouragement I received.

Life has been kind to me, I have my very own sewing studio, run my own quilting group and enjoy empowering other women and teenage girls and boys

to realise their own potentials and self worth. Patchwork and quilting..........the acquiring of beneficial states of mind and useful skills. I really did learn so much so........

Let's look first at the "useful skills. Accurate cutting and stitching, designing shapes that eventually fit together well, remembering various number combinations and various formula.

That is just a few! Secondly......the acquiring of beneficial states of mind........studies and science have proved that the acts of planning, creating and completing quilts, releases tensions and useful chemicals in our brains. Mmmm, hundreds and thousands of

quilters all over the world will be agreeing with that. Alongside acquiring skills and better, healthy states of mind, sits the huge bonus of friendships. We helped and supported each other during that special time together. Many times in The Academy Quilters sessions, all that could be heard was the soft whirring of sewing machines and gentle crunchy sound of rotary cutters as they cut accurate shapes from fabric.

There was an atmosphere of blissful concentration and creation. Each quilter, could be either designing a new block in a different size and colour way, matching precise cut shapes prior to stitching or planning a worksheet for sizes, quantities and

visual impact. Those sessions were so healthily and creatively beneficial, in numerous ways to many women, who like me, came, joined and had to move on to parts all over the world. All this was a thoroughly enjoyable challenge.....we used our brains, proved to ourselves that we really could make the most beautiful, stunning, comforting quilts. We followed in the footsteps of thousands of womenfolks and quite a few menfolk but nowadays having the luxury of modern aids and equipment.

So, thank you and may many other new quilters follow in my footsteps.

Shrivenham Station

Venison and Wine night

The Defence Academy hosted a highly successful Venison and Wine evening on 15th April, bringing together over 150 attendees from across the station.

Intended to be a family and educational event, the aim was to showcase the fantastic deer management work that the Defence Academy Conservation Club carries out, and to concurrently celebrate the culinary skills of ESS in their preparation of venison as a highly sustainable source of meat.

The evening opened with a welcome from the Station Commander, setting the tone for an event that combined education, community engagement and excellent food and wine supplied by ESS. This was followed by a presentation from Lt Col Rupert King-Evans on the three species of deer found in Oxfordshire: roe, fallow, and muntjac. He subsequently introduced three key speakers who added real depth as subject matter experts.

The British Deer Society provided a valuable SITREP on the current state of deer populations across the UK, highlighting both the ecological challenges and the importance of effective, sustainable management.

Representatives from the National Trust at Coleshill followed, outlining their ongoing deer management programme. Their work not only aims to balance conservation needs but also to educate the public about deer and explore opportunities to bring venison to a wider audience through the Open Food Network UK.

Thames Valley Police contributed an important perspective on deer-related road safety, a growing issue as populations increase and habitats overlap with transport networks.

Alongside these talks, practical demonstrations added an interesting dimension to the evening. A live skinning and butchery demo drew considerable interest, complemented by an antler display ably run by the King-Evans family, showcasing the wide variety found in the wild.

The food was a crowd-pleaser and a central part of the event’s success. ESS Executive Chef Peter Smith delivered an outstanding menu, with venison sausages and a rich stew for adults, alongside burgers for younger guests. A creative touch came in the form of a pie with pastry antlers, which proved particularly popular! To complete the experience, ESS Contract Manager Jonathan Munoz-Rennie offered expert guidance on pairing venison with wine, helping guests to better appreciate how to complement the unique flavours of this wonderful meat.

Importantly, the evening was designed as a whole-station event rather than being limited

to a single cohort, broadening its reach and impact across the Shrivenham Station community. It was encouraging to see over 30 children attending, and all taking an avid interest in countryside management and the sustainable field-to-fork provision of food.

The strong turnout, high levels of engagement and positive feedback all point to a clear appetite for similar events in the future.

Overall, the evening demonstrated how thoughtful engagement can connect people more closely with the origins of their food and the management of the natural environment.

Charity Book Stall For Root and Branch

All Money raised goes to support the local charity, “Root and Branch” Westmill. A charity based between here and Highworth, which helps people who are experiencing mental health difficulties. Located on an organic farm in the beautiful Vale of White Horse, they offer a wide range of activities such as gardening, blacksmithing, woodworking, crafts, artwork, pottery, ceramics and cookery.

EXERCISE WHITE HORSE

On 20 May 2026, Shrivenham Station carried out EX White Horse, a live security exercise to test and practice response to a series of security incidents.

In collaboration with Thames Valley Police (TVP) we tested three scenarios: protestors at the main gate, unauthorised drone reconnaissance and an intruder with malicious intent. While the scenarios were relatively simple, the training benefits for our security staff and TVP were invaluable. In terms of interoperability, we were able to better understand the coordination and control between military and civilian services, and to play out the scenarios in a realistic order of events that would ensue in the wake of a real incident.

A huge thanks must go to the Defence Academy Friends and Family Shrivenham Station

(DAFFYS), twenty seven of whom made an outstanding performance as protestors and auditors at the main gate. Volunteers included DAFFYs members from nine countries, the Military Wives Choir, local Book Club and Shrivenham and Watchfield communities. These ladies put police and station security staff through their paces with realistic slogans, banners and verbal sparring, culminating quickly to the blocking of the main gate.

Thank you for your creativity, enthusiasm and terrifyingly convincing acting skills! We couldn’t have had a more invested group of people, and I’m very grateful for the time you gave to taking part.

ACTIVE SOCIAL PROGRAMME ENHANCES LANGUAGE SKILLS

A bite of British history... and you get to eat cake:

Simnel Cake is a rich, spiced fruit cake. It’s one of Britain’s oldest seasonal bakes, traditionally associated with Easter and Mothering Sunday in the UK and Ireland. It’s made with dried fruits, spices, and ground almonds, but what makes it truly unique is the use of marzipan, both baked inside and decorated on top. It’s often topped with 11 marzipan balls, symbolising the 11 faithful apostles (excluding Judas).

A Bite of History

• Medieval Origins: Simnel likely comes from the Latin simila, meaning “fine flour.” The earliest Simnel cakes were boiled and then baked, a method used in medieval times to create a durable cake that could last the journey home.

• Mothering Sunday Tradition: By the 17th century, it became tradition for domestic servants to bake a Simnel Cake to take home to their mothers on Mothering Sunday (the 4th Sunday in Lent). This was one of the few days they were allowed to visit their family.
