FOREWORD

I

n the blink of an eye the heat waves are (hopefully) over, the first signs of autumn are appearing… and it will soon be Christmas!! We have many social events and opportunities for you to enjoy before then, and I very much looking forward to seeing you over the coming months. September brings our Academy Together Families Day, a wonderful opportunity to welcome new families onto the Station. From axe throwing to fairground rides, there should be something for everyone to enjoy outside the glorious backdrop of Beckett House. In October, we will celebrate Dashain with our Nepalese colleagues and families, one of the most important festivals in the Nepalese calendar. November brings our spectacular Bonfire Night, where we welcome you and the local community, and we will also hold Remembrance Services in Watchfield and on Station to remember our fallen. Before we break for Christmas, I hope many of you will also join the Station Carol Service and festive fun run, both of which have become cherished traditions here at Shrivenham. In other news, huge progress had been made in multiple infrastructure projects across site. The Defence Academy Station Gym refurbishment is nearing completion, delivering a modern strength and conditioning facility for staff, students and site users. Scheduled to open in late September following equipment relocation, the new gym enhances Station’s physical training provision while supporting MOD sustainability goals through energy-efficient technologies such as solar panels and air source heat pumps. An official opening ceremony will be held on 1 October 2026, marking a significant investment in improving facilities, wellbeing and training opportunities across the site. The new Medical and Dental Centre refurbishment in Burgoyne House remains on schedule, with handover to Defence Primary Healthcare (DPHC) expected in March 2027 and the facility anticipated to open in April 2027 following the installation of medical equipment. The centre will provide a modern medical, dental and rehabilitation facility, enhancing healthcare support for Service Personnel. Refurbishment of Kitchener Hall Single Living Accommodation continues to progress on

schedule and is expected to be completed by March 2028. The project will deliver 192 modern en-suite bedrooms, a new home for the Warrant Officers' and Sergeants' Mess, and refurbished facilities for the Officers' Mess and central dining room, significantly enhancing accommodation and communal spaces across site. Both Burgoyge and Kitchener developments also support MOD sustainability objectives through the integration of renewable energy technologies, including air source heat pumps, photovoltaic (PV) panels and rainwater harvesting systems, helping to improve energy efficiency and contribute towards a more sustainable estate. Some of you will already have seen the project underway to replace the roof verge undercloaking on 290 Service Family Accommodation (SFA) properties, to upgrade existing mortar verges to a modern dry verge system. The work is designed to eliminate the risk of deteriorating mortar becoming detached from roof tiles and is expected to be completed by mid to late October. We appreciate your patience as temporary scaffolding is erected to enable the works. I hope the coming months provide opportunities for all of us to spend time with colleagues, friends and family, to enjoy being part of this remarkable international community. Wishing you and your families a happy autumn, a peaceful Christmas and a joyful New Year.

Community News

A Message from the Station Executive Officer I started as the Station Executive Officer in June this year, and I can honestly say that the Defence Academy and Shrivenham Station are among the most exciting and rewarding places I have worked during my career. My connection with Shrivenham goes back many years, when I studied here on the MDA course. Returning has given me the opportunity to see how much the Academy has developed and grown. It is now an even more impressive place to study, work and live. In my short time back, I have had the privilege of visiting the Defence College for Military Capability Integration, Joint Services Command & Staff College and the many organisations that make up this unique community. I have been struck by the scale of the Academy's contribution to Defence and the outstanding people who deliver it every day. As Station Executive Officer, I am fortunate to have a role that

spans the entire station and its many functions. It has quickly become clear just how complex and diverse the Academy is, with a huge range of activity taking place across the site.

events held throughout the year. The recent Battle of Britain Night was a great example of the tradition, camaraderie and sense of community that make Shrivenham special.

One of the things that has impressed me most is the quality of the facilities available to our Service personnel, civil servants, contractors and families. The sporting facilities are exceptional, with three excellent gyms and a wide variety of clubs offering opportunities for people of all interests and abilities. Our messes also provide a fantastic focal point for the community, and I would particularly encourage people to take advantage of the formal functions and social

We are also fortunate to be located in a beautiful part of the country. For our international course members and their families in particular, there is a wealth of history and culture on our doorstep. The White Horse at Uffington, Avebury's ancient stone circles and the surrounding countryside are all well worth exploring and offer a fascinating insight into Britain's rich heritage. I am looking forward to working with colleagues, students and

families across the station as we continue to make Shrivenham an outstanding place to study, work and live. I have received a very warm welcome since arriving and am excited to play my part in the Academy's future success. Sqn Ldr Jeremy Rowlands

Highworth Warneford School celebrates outstanding progress following highly positive Ofsted inspection Highworth Warneford School is celebrating a highly positive Ofsted inspection outcome following its inspection in June, with inspectors recognising strengths across all areas of the school's provision and awarding a Strong judgement for Personal Development. The report highlights the many strengths of the school, with inspectors praising a range of features that make Highworth Warneford a thriving and ambitious place to learn, grow and achieve. Inspectors commended the school's ambitious and broad curriculum, noting that teachers have "secure knowledge of, and a passion for, the subjects that they teach." The inspection also recognised the school's excellent work in personal development, awarding a Strong judgement in this area, while all other areas met the high expectations of Ofsted's revised framework. This significant achievement follows two previous inspections that judged the school to require improvement and stands as clear recognition of the substantial progress made in recent years. The outcome reflects a school where ambition, determination and high expectations underpin everyday practice, enabling pupils to thrive both academically and personally. Importantly, the inspection was conducted under Ofsted's revised framework, which introduces a broader range of judgements and raises expectations across all aspects of school provision. Ofsted's answer to the question, "What is it like to be a pupil at this school?", was especially positive: "Pupils feel proud to be part of the community. Warm, positive relationships between staff and pupils contribute to pupils feeling valued and included. Pupils enjoy their learning and look forward to the many enrichment opportunities available to them. During social times, pupils enjoy using the sports and music facilities and socialising with others. There is a calm and harmonious atmosphere. Pupils are respectful of one another and bullying is rare." Sophie Hesten, Principal of Highworth Warneford School, said: The report reflects what our students experience every day: a school where they feel safe, valued and encouraged to achieve their very best. While we are proud of this outcome, we remain ambitious and committed to continuing our journey towards excellence." We have also produced a new school video, which gives you a glimpse into life at our school. You can watch it here: https://tpatonlineservices-my.sharepoint.com/:v:/g/personal/chequerm_theparkacademiestrust_com/IQDYgHHalbVhSqfEoCaExo-MAYlMb5 Rua16c8350r3JsfXg?nav=eyJyZWZlcnJhbEluZm8iOnsicmVmZXJyYWxBcHAiOiJPbmVEcml2ZUZvckJ1c2luZXNzIiwicmVmZXJyYWxBcHBQbGF 0Zm9ybSI6IldlYiIsInJlZmVycmFsTW9kZSI6InZpZXciLCJyZWZlcnJhbFZpZXciOiJNeUZpbGVzTGlua0NvcHkifX0&e=NEWQ2v AUTUMN 2026

SHRIVENHAM COMMUNITY NEWS

From Posting to Posting: How Boarding School Can Support RAF and Other Armed Forces Families For RAF and other Armed Forces families facing frequent moves, boarding school can provide educational stability and lasting friendships. If you’ve ever unpacked the same boxes in Brize Norton, Cyprus or the USA, you’ll know military family life is never dull. It’s an adventure, but frequent moves can disrupt children’s education. Just as they’ve settled and made new friends, new posting orders arrive. Another move, another school, another round of settling in. For many service families, boarding school provides what the Forces can’t always guarantee: stability. With around 500 UK boarding schools to choose from, however, knowing where to start can feel overwhelming. I’m Claire Calder, a former Cheltenham College pupil, mother to two children who thrived in boarding from the age of eight, and married to a British Army officer for 27 years. Having lived across the UK and overseas,

I understand first-hand how daunting finding the right school can feel. At Claire Calder Consultancy, we take a child-centred, family-focused approach. Every recommendation considers your child’s personality, strengths and interests, whether they’re academic high-flyers, budding artists or sports enthusiasts. Our service is impartial and free for HM Forces families. I manage the practical steps, from shortlisting schools and arranging visits to explaining admissions and advising on discounts available to Forces families. Boarding school isn’t about sending children away; it’s about providing continuity, friendships and opportunities that repeated moves can disrupt.

For a friendly chat about how boarding could work for your family, please get in touch.

Update from

The Welfare Team In August, the Welfare Team purchased tickets for Roves Farm – generously funded by the Station Welfare Fund. The tickets were snapped up very quickly and we know that this was very much appreciated by families.

FAMILY FAYRE

JCC MAKEOVER The Jubilee Community Centre (JCC) is enjoying a bit of a makeover! Issam, the Welfare Team’s Lead Administrator, painted the benches in the outdoor play area and they look fantastic. The JCC also has a new logo (shown at the top of this page) and it’s about to have new fences and decking – watch this space! On Thursday 27 August, the Welfare Team held a Family Fayre at the JCC. It was so lovely to welcome new families and catch up with those who already enjoy the centre’s facilities. Families were able to chat with representatives from different support services as well as enjoying refreshments, crafts and games. It was a wonderful afternoon and we hope that it gave everyone a taste of what the JCC has to offer.

MACMILLAN COFFEE MORNING We hosted a Macmillan Coffee Morning on Friday 25 September and we would like to say a huge thank you to those who joined us. As well as enjoying the hot drinks and delicious cakes, we raised funds for such a wonderful charity.

We are always looking for new groups/ events/things to run so if you have any ideas, please contact a member of the Welfare Team. 8

Defence Academy Military Wives Choir Since the last edition, we have been busy preparing for our Summer Concert, held on Saturday 18th July. We set ourselves the ambitious task of learning 14 songs. Our repertoire included the Bond themes Goldfinger and Skyfall, along with wonderful arrangements of Amazing Grace and Oh Danny Boy. We also sang some of our favourite core songs including Mr Blue Sky, A Thousand Years, Fix You and a Viva La Vida/Titanium mash up. We gave it our all, expertly conducted by the wonderful Anthony “Tone” Brown and accompanied by the fabulous Bethany Brooke. We would also like to thank Paige LaPorte for taking photos and videoing all aspects of the concert. Paige, along with her twin sister for creating a great video of the concert and interviews with choir members.

Defence Academy Golf Club Celebrating 70 Years Established in 1956, the Defence Academy Golf Club offers a beautiful parkland 18-hole golf club on your doorstep. Operating within the confines of the Shrivenham campus under the umbrella of the Defence Academy Athletics Union, the club provides an outstanding sporting, social, and welfare facility for Service Personnel, MOD employees, contractors, and their families, as well as the wider military community and veterans. Affiliated with England Golf, we offer an official handicap pathway across our 5,666-yard, Par 70 layout. Alongside the full 18-hole experience, members enjoy comprehensive practice facilities; including a dedicated practice hole, driving range, putting green, and warm-up netted bay. Whether you are a seasoned golfer or a complete beginner looking to unwind and improve your wellbeing, our flexible membership packages and ‘pay & play’ options cater directly to the tempo of staff and students on site. The roots of our club date back

70 years to the opening match between Staff and Students of the Royal Military College of Science (RMCS). Renowned BBC television golf commentator and Sunday Times correspondent Henry Longhurst—the legendary ‘voice of golf’—captained the student side and struck the very first drive on the new course. While the staff pairing of Lt Col R N Syme and Dr J M Hawkes claimed victory in the opening match against Longhurst and Capt G W T Brook, the RMCS students ultimately took the historic day 5–3.

This established approach fosters an inclusive environment where pupils learn from diverse perspectives, develop mutual respect and build the interpersonal skills essential for modern life. The school’s approach to learning is guided by research-informed teaching, ensuring lessons are rigorous, engaging and responsive to individual needs. A broad curriculum enables pupils to explore a wide range of subjects, from the Prep School through to GCSE and A Level, with small class sizes allowing teachers to support and stretch each pupil, nurturing academic success and a lifelong love of learning. Pastoral care is a central strength of Cokethorpe. Built on kindness and mutual respect, the supportive community ensures every pupil feels known and valued. Structured systems and strong relationships between staff and pupils create a secure environment in which young people can build confidence, resilience and independence. Beyond the classroom, pupils benefit from exceptional breadth, with an extensive co-curricular programme that includes over 100 activities in the Senior School. Outdoor education is a particularly distinctive feature, making full use of the school’s expansive grounds and dedicated facilities. Opportunities such as kayaking, sailing, climbing, bushcraft and access to on-site rifle and pistol ranges allow pupils to develop practical skills, resilience and teamwork, while building confidence through challenge and adventure. Preparation for the future is embedded through the Futures programme, which provides tailored guidance on higher education and career pathways. Pupils receive expert support with university applications, apprenticeships and career choices, ensuring they leave with clarity and ambition. Admission to Cokethorpe is selective, with entry points at 4+, 11+, 13+ and 16+, and scholarships and meanstested bursaries available. Overall, Cokethorpe offers a well-rounded education that combines academic excellence, outstanding pastoral care and rich opportunities beyond the classroom, enabling pupils to thrive and succeed.

The Old Crown Coaching Inn – Hotel, Pub & Restaurant The Old Crown Coaching Inn holds two AA Rosettes for the quality of its cooking, a recognition earned through consistent excellence in the kitchen. Under Head Chef Jamie Whitting, the food here is rooted in English tradition but finished with a European sensibility: honest, generous, and made from ingredients that have not travelled far.

The Old Crown Coaching Inn – A Family-Run Home from Home The Old Crown Coaching Inn is a much-loved, family-run business in the heart of Faringdon, Oxfordshire, combining centuries of history with a fresh, modern and exceptionally welcoming atmosphere. Dating back to the 16th century, this characterful coaching inn has been lovingly transformed since the Evans, Webb and Clarke family took over in 2021. Today, guests can enjoy 14 beautifully refurbished bedrooms, a stunning 80-seater restaurant, JJ’s Wine & Cocktail Bar, our traditional public bar, a beautiful courtyard and convenient parking. Whether you are joining us for dinner, drinks, live music or an overnight stay, we pride ourselves on being a friendly, relaxed place where everyone feels at home. The inn’s fascinating history includes links to Oliver Cromwell and Judge Jeffreys, adding plenty of character to an already very special place. At the heart of The Old Crown is our food, with excellent chef Jamie Whiting leading the kitchen and creating an inspired menu with a particular focus on our Josper oven. Our beautiful restaurant provides a memorable setting for everything from a relaxed meal to a special occasion, while the pub offers a more informal atmosphere, with live music every Saturday and a real sense of community. We are also ideally located for RAF Brize Norton, approximately six miles away, making The Old Crown a fantastic choice for RAF personnel, visiting families, friends and those looking for a comfortable and welcoming place to stay close to the base. Whether you are here for one night, a weekend or a longer visit, we offer a genuine home-from-home with great food, comfortable rooms, friendly service and plenty to enjoy under one roof.

ACADEMY QUILTERS SHRIVENHAM COMMUNITY NEWS

****************************************** The Academy Quilters have had another enjoyable and peacefully creative year. So many lovely quilts and quilted gifts etc have been made over the years …… patchwork friends made and relocated all over the world, skills learnt and businesses set up. Well done to all my quilt buddies. Spending time together while learning and acquiring useful skills and just as importantly in this rushed and frantic world, we were able to forget all sorts of stresses and worries for a few hours each week and quietly, without any pressures or competition. It was fascinating to see how our ever so patient tutor managed

to keep us all on track with our various projects and the calm “plan b” reply to various situations as they cropped up while stay with me for ever. The group meets twice a week (we were soooo lucky), Monday nights 7.30pm and Thursday mornings 10am, in the hall attached to The church, St Albans, across from Folly Crescent. Heather is the wonderful tutor with years of experience and heaps of calm patience. I will treasure my time with the group and I hope some of you will too. Bye, Vicenza.

****************************************** One of my two identical beautiful quilt panels…love red and wanted to use as much as possible. Recycled some fabrics with special family connections too. Would have loved to been able to spend more time with the quilting group but will relocate with the best of memories. Found the Academy Quilters and joined with a set of “orphan blocks” and loads of flying geese sewn units. Didn’t know how to move forward with these projects but within minutes of joining, EVERYTHING was happily sorted and I was stitching again. Was thrilled to relocate with the blocks made into a baby quilt and the other units stitched into a fantastic table runner. So very glad I walked through the door and met my tutor Heather.

I did it ! Never sewed before. So pleased with myself . I love my first ever cushion and learnt so much. Back home now, making cushions to sell, very happy.

ACADEMY QUILTERS SHRIVENHAM COMMUNITY NEWS Jemima puddleduck panel and suitable sourced other fabrics were my starting point for this baby quilt. Really loved how it turned out. Next stage will be topping out and quilting. That means more time for me to chill out in between nursing duties.

Completed this table centre and several quilts while with Academy Quilters at Shrivenham. Had done a bit of sewing before…things for school plays etc when the smalls first started school but nothing as fun and relaxing as patchwork and quilting. I learnt such a lot while with this group, certainly was time very well spent. Have gone on to entering a quilt in a quilt show and WON A PRIZE !! Thank you Academy Quilter tutor, you’re the best.

Sweet little 9 patch quilt blocks. All done with “rescued” and vintage fabrics. Following in my great grandmother’s footsteps. Having joined the quilting group, l learnt so much and appreciate her even more. This sewing now is my mental “reset” time. Can’t think why I never did it before.

Big learning curve for me, having never used a sewing machine before. So glad I found the Academy Quilters. I enjoyed the chance to slow down and relax and learn something useful and so enjoyable too. Kind of pleased with myself and love my cushion with its cheerful red fabric.

Never used a sewing machine before, somehow managed to avoid it at school….too busy playing netball I guess. Things changed when posted to Shrivenham and met to quilting group at the meet and greet session. Joined up and haven’t looked back since. This is one of many baby quilts I so love making. Thanks Academy Quilters, you gave me confidence and a skill and friends all over the world now. AUTUMN 2026

The last of the fabric used to make the final one of these dear little house/heart hangings. Swapped buttons with departing quilters so there’s a bit of everyone in each one.

My first wall hanging! Always love blue and orange together. Made while at Shrivenham and now hangs in my dining room in Tasmania.
