Sugar didn’t begin as the everyday pantry staple we know today—it started as one of the world’s most coveted luxuries, a true “white gold” that shaped empires and appetites alike. Its story begins in ancient India around 500 BCE, where people first discovered how to extract and crystallize sweetness from sugarcane, turning a tropical grass into something almost magical. From there, sugar traveled like a prized secret, moving through Persia and into the Mediterranean via bustling trade routes and ambitious conquests. By the time it reached medieval Europe, sugar wasn’t casually stirred into drinks—it was hoarded, displayed, and even locked away like jewelry. Wealthy households showcased their status through elaborate sugar sculptures called “subtleties,” edible centerpieces shaped into castles, animals, and mythological scenes that blurred the line between food and art. The Industrial Revolution democratized sugar, making it widely available and sprinkling it into everyday diets. Ironically, the same ingredient once associated with health and vitality later became linked to tooth decay—so much so that darkened teeth were once considered fashionable among the wealthy. The deep navy tones in the print prompted us to find Refine Cozy, a midnight-blue mediumweight cotton French terry knit. We’re unsure whether it’s 100% cotton or a cotton-spandex blend, so if you are sensitive to spandex, test a swatch against your skin before purchasing yardage. We love this knit for hoodies, zipfront sweatshirts, and softly structured jackets where the reverse side shows.

Refine Collection

As sugar evolved from rare luxury to everyday essential, the ways it was crafted and enjoyed became far more diverse—and far more interesting. The most familiar form, granulated white sugar, begins as juice extracted from sugarcane or sugar beets, then purified, concentrated, and crystallized into fine, uniform grains. But beyond that tidy spoonful lies a world of variation. Brown sugar, with its hint of molasses, carries warmth and depth, adding richness to baked goods and sauces. The brown sugar most Americans bake with is actually created by adding molasses back into refined white sugar, allowing for consistent texture and flavor from batch to batch. By contrast, traditional and less refined sugars—like muscovado, demerara, or jaggery—retain some or all of their original molasses, giving them a more complex, sometimes earthy character that reflects their origin. Powdered sugar, soft as dust, dissolves instantly into icings and glazes, transforming simple ingredients into something silky and indulgent. Travel a bit further, and sugar becomes even more expressive: golden crystals that crunch between your fingers; moist, fragrant sugars with deep caramel notes; and rustic forms that feel closer to the field than the factory. Have you ever wondered why a piece of fruit feels so satisfying, while a sugary snack can leave you wanting more? Natural sugars are quietly at work in many of the foods we eat, fueling the body in ways that are both simple and surprisingly complex. Glucose, often called blood sugar, serves as the body’s primary fuel, powering everything from muscles to brain function. The body can absorb glucose directly from certain foods, but it also produces glucose by breaking down carbohydrates such as bread, rice, potatoes, and other sugars during digestion. Fruits and honey naturally contain both glucose and fructose, though fructose is the sweeter of the two and follows a different metabolic path, being processed mainly in the liver. How to Care For Your Fabrics

The care instructions in this catalog are a conservative path, but not an absolute. There is no one size fits all for fabric care because of all the variables, such as hard versus soft water, well and septic versus municipal water, washers with and without a center aggitator, dryers that have a no-heat option, etc.

One supplier would have everyone dry clean every fabric, but for many of you this is not feasable.

Here are some general guides. You can always use your swatch to test how a fabric will react to washing and drying. Test wash the way you plan to wash your finished garments - this will remove any sizing and shrinkage prior to cutting/sewing.

Pro-Tip: Set your washer for an extra long spin cycle to remove excess water, then toss in the dryer on low heat for 5 minutes before hanging or laying flat. This minimizes wrinkles, and helps fibers last longer.

Energy Collection

Sugar fuels nearly every system in the human body, making it one of our most immediate and important sources of energy. When you eat something containing sugar or carbohydrates, your digestive system breaks it down into glucose, the form of sugar that circulates through the bloodstream. That glucose triggers the pancreas to release insulin, a hormone that acts like a key, helping move sugar from the blood into cells where it can be used for energy. Muscles use glucose to power movement, organs rely on it to function properly, and the brain consumes a surprisingly large share of the body’s available fuel. In fact, the brain depends so heavily on glucose that even small drops in blood sugar can affect concentration, mood, memory, and mental clarity. Interestingly, at the molecular level, your body does not distinguish between glucose that originated in an apple and glucose that came from a candy bar. Once digestion breaks foods down into their basic components, the body recognizes the same glucose molecules regardless of their source. What changes dramatically, however, is how quickly those sugars enter the bloodstream. Whole foods rich in fiber release sugar more slowly and steadily, while highly refined sugars can flood the bloodstream rapidly, creating sharp spikes followed by noticeable crashes in energy. Sugar also interacts with the brain’s reward system, triggering the release of dopamine and reinforcing feelings of pleasure and satisfaction. This response helped early humans seek out calorie-rich foods for survival, though in the modern world it can contribute to cravings and overeating. Over time, consistently high sugar intake can make the body less responsive to insulin, a condition known as insulin resistance. When that happens, glucose struggles to move efficiently into cells, forcing the body to produce even more insulin to compensate. Left unchecked, this imbalance can increase the risk of metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes. Over the years, we have learned just how much our subscribers love lightweight cottons made in India, like Energy Alex. Breezy and comfortable, these fabrics are designed for the hot Indian summers, and the colors and textures are simply delightful. Choose a loose-fitting blouse pattern to showcase this airy gauze beautifully.

The mill lists this fabric as 44” wide because that is the flat measurement directly off the loom. However, the crinkled texture puts the finished width closer to 40” and we expect a little shrinkage in the wash.
