Visionaries Some remarkable minds have conceived ideas centuries ahead of their time, before the means existed to fully realize them. This issue celebrates a few of those leaps of ingenuity—and offers plenty of inspiration for creations you can make right now. It should take only a nanosecond to spot your favorites among the worsted wools, colorful cottons, soft knits, and other fall favorites.

Fly Collection Leonardo da Vinci famously studied every facet of the things that sparked his interest, and the flight of birds captured his attention. He noted when they flapped their wings and when they stopped, how they banked into the wind, climbed without obvious effort, or simply hung in the sky. He wondered what it would take for humans to do the same. Others had already tried. Around 875, Abbas ibn Firnas reportedly launched himself near Córdoba with fabric-covered wings, and nearly two centuries later the English monk Eilmer of Malmesbury glided hundreds of feet from an abbey tower. Both came abruptly back to earth. Rather than simply finding another way to imitate a bird, Leonardo wanted to understand what kept the birds aloft. Beginning in the 1480s, he filled notebooks with observations and sketches, gradually arriving at a remarkable idea. Perhaps a bird did not simply move through the air; perhaps the air itself moved. Leonardo compared its behavior to flowing water, reasoning that air, too, had currents that could push against a wing and support it. Once he began thinking of air as something that could be studied rather than empty space, possibilities multiplied. His notebooks filled with gliders, elaborate winged machines, an aerial screw resembling the principle of a modern helicopter, and a pyramidal parachute. Leonardo built working models of many inventions, but no evidence suggests he ever constructed or tested a full-sized flying machine. Jumping from a tower or cliff tethered to an experimental contraption carried an obvious problem: failure offered little opportunity to revise the design. After his death, his notebooks were dispersed among heirs and collectors, and much of his work remained unknown to the people who would eventually tackle the same problems. Later aviation pioneers therefore had to make their own observations, conduct their own experiments, and discover for themselves many of the principles Leonardo had already begun exploring. In 2000, British skydiver Adrian Nicholas successfully descended beneath a parachute constructed according to Leonardo’s five-hundred-year-old design. What might have happened if Leonardo’s notebooks had circulated instead? If other inventors had been able to test his ideas, discard what failed, improve what worked, and begin where he left off? Leonardo could not build the aircraft he imagined, but perhaps the greater loss was that, for centuries, no one else could build upon his work.

Create Collection Nearly three thousand years ago, during the reign of King Mu of Zhou, one of history’s most remarkable stories was set. Preserved in the Liezi, a classic work of Chinese philosophy, it tells of the master craftsman Yan Shi and a creation unlike anything the ancient world had ever imagined. Yan Shi arrives at the royal court accompanied by a stranger whom he presents as his handiwork. King Mu is skeptical. The stranger looks human, walks like a human, and possesses all the features of a human being. When Yan Shi touches his chin, the figure begins to sing. He touches its hand, and it moves gracefully in time with the music. King Mu watches the performance with his favorite consort and the women of his household, increasingly astonished by what he sees. Then, as the performance draws to a close, the stranger winks and makes advances toward the king’s women. King Mu flies into a rage and orders Yan Shi executed. Terrified, the craftsman immediately pulls his creation apart. Inside is no flesh or bone, but an astonishing assembly fashioned from wood, leather, lacquer, and other materials into organs, bones, muscles, joints, skin, teeth, and hair. King Mu examines the pieces. Everything appears to have its human counterpart. The figure is reassembled and once again stands before him as though alive. Now King Mu begins experimenting. He removes its heart, and it cannot speak. He removes its liver, and it cannot see. He removes its kidneys, and it cannot walk. Each part performs its function; together, they become something the king had mistaken for a man. Astonished, King Mu asks whether human skill might actually rival the work of creation. Perhaps within the next hundred years we will see such a creation - a machine that’s so lifelike we mistake it for human.

Envision Collection In Victorian England, noble girls typically received an informal education through governesses in music, etiquette, drawing, and the accomplishments expected of a young lady; Ada Lovelace was set on a very different path. Her mathematically gifted mother, Lady Byron, insisted on mathematics, science, logic, and languages, believing disciplined reasoning offered a steadier path than poetry and emotion—the romantic world of Ada’s absentee father, Lord Byron. When Ada was seventeen, her social and intellectual circles brought her to a gathering where she met mathematician and inventor Charles Babbage. He demonstrated a working portion of his Difference Engine, a remarkable machine whose brass gears turned numbers into answers and performed calculations automatically. Ada was captivated. She wanted to understand how it worked—and what else a machine might someday do. Ten years later, Babbage’s ambitions had grown. His proposed Analytical Engine—an early concept of a programmable computer—would use punched cards to direct a machine through different operations. When an Italian engineer wrote about Babbage’s machine, Ada was asked to translate it and add her personal notes. Ada did much more. Her additions grew to more than twice the length of the original article and included a method for instructing the Analytical Engine to calculate Bernoulli numbers, now widely regarded as the first published algorithm designed for a programmable computing machine. Then the twenty-seven-year-old Ada made the extraordinary leap. Babbage had conceived a machine capable of manipulating numbers. Ada realized the numbers did not have to represent numbers. If they could represent musical notes, symbols, patterns, or other information, the machine might someday compose music or manipulate ideas according to rules. The Analytical Engine was never completed, and Ada never lived to see a programmable computer. Yet more than a century before computers could create music, images, and words, Ada had already envisioned the possibility. The mathematics her mother cultivated and the creative imagination she had inherited from Lord Byron had found common ground in a machine that did not exist - yet.

How to Care For Your Fabrics The care instructions in this catalog are a conservative path, but not an absolute. There is no one size fits all for fabric care because of all the variables, such as hard versus soft water, well and septic versus municipal water, washers with and without a center aggitator, dryers that have a no-heat option, etc. One supplier would have everyone dry clean every fabric, but for many of you this is not feasable. Here are some general guides. You can always use your swatch to test how a fabric will react to washing and drying. Test wash the way you plan to wash your finished garments - this will remove any sizing and shrinkage prior to cutting/sewing. Pro-Tip: Set your washer for an extra long spin cycle to remove excess water, then toss in the dryer on low heat for 5 minutes before hanging or laying flat. This minimizes wrinkles, and helps fibers last longer.

Spandex & Lycra: does not like heat (see pro-tip). Rayon: does not like heat - can pill (see pro-tip). Cotton: pre-shrink, use cool iron. Linen: will shrink and soften when washed. Silk: can look sueded when washed. Wool: most are sponged and pre-shrunk so you can cold wash and line dry. Tweeds can distort with machine agitation, so hand wash. Polyester: washable and dryable. Chiffon and georgette are best in a delicate cycle. Knits can stretch if hung while wet, so using the air dry option on your machine, or laying flat to dry is best.

Heal Collection Before dawn each morning in medieval Cairo, the gates of the city’s great hospitals opened to a procession of the sick and injured. Some arrived with broken bones from falls or riding accidents. Others carried deep wounds from battle, painful bladder stones, infected abscesses, or joints dislocated by hard labor. Surgeons repaired what they could, performing delicate operations only when the potential benefit outweighed the tremendous risk. To ease suffering, they relied on opium, mandrake, henbane, and herbal sedatives centuries before the development of modern anesthesia. The physicians worked within a medical tradition shaped by the celebrated Greek physician Galen. For more than a millennium, students of medicine had learned that blood passed from the heart’s right chamber to its left through tiny invisible pores in the wall separating them. No one could see the pores, but Galen’s explanation had endured for centuries. A young Syrian physician working at the great Al-Nasiri Hospital in the mid-thirteenth century began to question whether Galen was correct. Ibn al-Nafis treated patients, encountered wounds and injuries, and studied anatomy. What he understood of the heart presented a problem: the wall between its chambers was not porous. It was thick and solid. Ibn al-Nafis went so far as to argue that the invisible pores were a preconceived idea, invented because physicians assumed blood had to pass directly from one chamber to the other. But if the wall was solid, the blood had to be going somewhere else. Ibn al-Nafis followed the blood. He reasoned that it must leave the heart, travel through the lungs, and then return to the heart’s opposite chamber. Today we recognize this pathway as pulmonary circulation, one of the great milestones in the history of medicine. Yet his remarkable insight never gained traction with a new generation of physicians. Ibn al-Nafis remained a respected medical authority, but his description of blood passing through the lungs failed to displace the Galenic model that had dominated medicine for a thousand years. Later scholars would receive credit for reaching the same conclusion independently. His anatomical manuscript remained largely forgotten until 1924, when an Egyptian medical student in Germany studying an old Arabic copy recognized what Ibn al-Nafis had proposed nearly seven centuries earlier. What might have changed if physicians had begun building upon his idea sooner?
