Series
Produced by Vocal Associates Supported by Ms Khor’s Studio
The Songbirds Series is an annual concert series produced by Vocal Associates, providing singers across generations with a dedicated platform to develop and present their artistry on the professional stage. Established in 2015 under the artistic direction of Khor Ai Ming, the series has grown into a longstanding performance tradition, bringing together children, youths, adults and seniors through a shared love of singing. At the heart of the Songbirds Series is the belief that vocal education extends beyond the lesson room. Singers develop not only vocal technique and musicianship, but also stagecraft, confidence, communication, artistic interpretation and the discipline of preparing for a live performance. Each singer is encouraged to discover an individual artistic voice while learning the professionalism and collaborative spirit required of a performing artiste. The series presents a diverse repertoire spanning classical song, opera, musical theatre, contemporary music, film music and popular repertoire, with programmes shaped to suit the age, ability and artistic development of individual performers. Songbirds Series has also expanded beyond the traditional recital format into semi-staged operas and musicals, including Hansel and Gretel, The Little Prince, The Sound of Music, The Magic Flute and The Lion King.

Songbirds performers are drawn from the wider Vocal Associates community, including its Ensemble of Young Voices and Songbirds Solo Artistes. Over the years, young singers associated with the programme have achieved distinctions in Trinity College London examinations and prizes at international competitions, while gaining opportunities to perform both in Singapore and overseas. Esplanade Singapore has similarly highlighted the examination distinctions and international competition achievements of Vocal Associates’ young Songbirds. The series is supported by Ms Khor’s Studio, a vocal education school founded on structured training in vocal technique, repertoire development, musicianship and performance skills. Its teaching team is trained in the vocal methodology of Principal Khor Ai Ming, creating continuity between the singers’ regular vocal development and their preparation for the stage. This close relationship between Ms Khor’s Studio as a training ground and Vocal Associates as a performing arts platform is central to the identity of Songbirds. Singers are given opportunities to transform what they learn in lessons into genuine artistic experiences before an audience—developing from students of singing into confident and expressive performers. Above all, the Songbirds Series celebrates the individual voice at every stage of life. From a child stepping onto the concert stage for the first time, to an emerging young artiste refining their craft, or an adult or senior rediscovering the joy of performing, every Songbird is given a place to be heard.
