INTRODUCTION The brochure Flanders in Figures provides a snapshot of Flanders based on a selection of key Flemish official statistics. The statistics cover a wide range of themes and are grouped into four sections: population and society, economy and enterprises, the environment and government and governance. A brief comparison of the Flemish data with Belgium and other countries in the European Union is included at the end. Flanders in Figures can be downloaded on the Statistics Flanders website (www.statisticsflanders.be). On this website, the statistics included in this brochure can be found in more detail, together with the corresponding datasets and information about the sources and definitions used. The statistics in this brochure always refer to the Flemish Region, except where it is stated that these concern the Flemish Community. The Flemish Region is authorized for matters relating to the territory (e.g. economy), the socalled ‘place-specific’ matters. Matters related directly to the inhabitants, the so-called ‘person-related’ matters (e.g. culture), fall under the authority of the Flemish Community.

About Statistics Flanders Statistics Flanders is the network of Flemish government departments and agencies that develop, produce and publish official statistics. These official statistics provide a reliable and high-quality picture of Flanders: from the people who live and work there, the economy and the living environment to the position of Flanders in the world. At the same time, Statistics Flanders provides a broader context, by grouping statistics thematically, mapping trends and putting figures in a geographical perspective. Statistics Flanders follows a coordinated statistics policy, so that official statistics about Flanders and the underlying data, which can be accessed via the website www.statisticsflanders.be, are easily accessible to everyone. In this way, citizens, organizations and companies are provided with fast, reliable, accurate and independent information about Flanders. We develop, produce and publish all official statistics about Flanders in accordance with the legal provisions and international principles about quality, relevance and professional independence. These principles can also be found in the four strategic objectives that guide the work of Statistics Flanders: • official statistics are for everyone; • we provide high-quality statistics with a planned approach; • we are transparent and work independently; • we work innovatively and focus on the future. The Flanders Statistics Authority, led by the chief statistician of the Flemish government, coordinates and supports the network Statistics Flanders so that the development, production and dissemination of official statistics across the government is done in a high-quality and systematic way.
