Flanders is the story of people as producers, driven by knowledge and skill. It is the story of cutting edge craftsmanship. Yesterday, today and tomorrow. That makes Flanders much discussed in the world. Flanders is the northern federated state of Belgium with Brussels as its capital. It is the gateway to Europe, is located less than 500 km from the major European capitals. It shares its capital with the EU, NATO and numerous other international institutions and companies. Together with its renowned sea ports, extensive network of railways and motorways, productive and highly skilled population, excellent health care and research- and investment-friendly climate, this makes Flanders unique in Europe. Flanders in Figures gives a statistical overview using numerical data that illustrate developments in areas such as economy, mobility and innovation, as well as healthcare, culture, and the environment. The overview was composed by the Research Centre of the Flemish Government which carries out independent scientifically underpinned research into demographic, social and societal, and macro-economic themes. Finally, the Research Centre acts as the pivot of the supply and demand of public statistics on Flanders. For more information about the Research Centre you can visit http://www.vlaanderen.be/svr (only in Dutch). Other language versions of Flanders in Figures are also available at http://www.flanders.be. The statistics in Flanders in Figures pertain to the Flemish Region, except where an asterisk (*) is shown. This indicates that the statistics relate to the Flemish Community.

ABOUT FLANDERS In Flanders when we’re hungry we make waterzooi. We make fashion for Paris and endives for New York. We make cinema, theatre and the best loved chocolate in the world.

We make bicycles and champion cyclists. We make the finest beers and the best medicines for headaches.

We make history and the future.

We make patients feel better and people feel at home.

We make that everybody understands us.

We make steel cord and lace.

We make video screens larger and energy greener.

We make the tallest towers and islands in the sea. When we want to cheer ourselves up we make funny costumes and have a parade.

We make literature and architecture.

We make scientists creative and craftsmen innovative.

We make music and the stages to perform it on.

In Flanders we make anything.

We just don’t make a lot of fuss.

FLANDERS – IMAGINATION WORKS Flanders is the northern federated state of Belgium with Brussels as its capital. It is the gateway to Europe.
