An interview with Maurice Moradof Co - Founder & CEO of Yafa, the largest retailer of museum quality vintage signed jewelry.

For people unfamiliar with Yafa, can you give us a little background? Yafa was founded 40 years ago by my Mother, Yafa Moradof & myself. We started as a wholesaler of estate jewelry. After a few years I decided that I wanted to specialize in signed jewelry, meaning items manufactured by only the best brands in the jewelry world, names like Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Bulgari, Harry Winston and others.

y did you make that decision, what is it about signed jewelry that makes it special? As someone that has been in this industry for over 4 decades, high quality signed jewelry is unique in that it increases in value over time. You can't replicate the craftsmanship, and in many cases even the design. When I look at items that we sold 8 or 10 years ago, in many cases I would buy back the item for the same price I sold it for! High quality signed jewelry is simply an alternative asset class.

We understand that you also sell diamonds, is that correct? Yes, however we take the same approach to diamonds that we do with jewelry. Yafa sells rarity and exclusivity, our clients come to us for items that they can't find elsewhere, both in jewelry & diamonds. Our diamonds typically start at in the 10 carat range and up, and we regularly sell individual stones in the 20 ct to 30 ct range. We are fortunate in that we have an office in South Africa where we buy rough, we then cut and polish in our factory. Only the best of the best makes it into our retail inventory.
