Access to quality healthcare is one of the most important foundations of a strong and thriving community. It affects where families choose to live, where businesses choose to locate, and the overall health and well-being of our region. That’s why the upcoming vote on Measure H this June is such an important moment for Vista and all of North County.
A Transformational Opportunity for North County Healthcare
programs, and services, helping ensure the hospital remains strong, modern, and sustainable for years to come.
Equally important, the partnership would expand access to primary care and ancillary healthcare services throughout North County. As our population continues to grow, access to doctors, specialists, and preventative care will become even more important for both residents and employers. Strengthening our regional healthcare network helps support a healthier workforce and a stronger local economy.
Measure H proposes a partnership between Tri-City Medical Center and Sharp HealthCare that would allow Sharp to lease and operate the hospital. After careful consideration, the Vista Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors voted to support Measure H because we believe it represents a transformational opportunity to strengthen healthcare access and economic vitality in our region.
Tri-City Medical Center has served our community for more than 60 years. The hospital’s physicians, nurses, and staff have cared for generations of North County residents and continue to play a critical role in our healthcare system. However, healthcare is evolving rapidly. Hospitals today must invest heavily in modern facilities, advanced technology, and expanded services in order to meet the needs of growing communities.
The proposed partnership with Sharp HealthCare would bring one of San Diego County’s most respected healthcare systems to North County. If approved by voters, Sharp has committed to making significant investments in Tri-City Medical Center’s infrastructure,
The benefits extend beyond healthcare alone. Major healthcare institutions often serve as catalysts for economic development. A strengthened Tri-City Medical Center has the potential to attract new medical offices, healthcare services, and related businesses along the Highway 78 corridor and beyond, bringing additional jobs, investment, and opportunity to Vista and the surrounding communities.
At the Vista Chamber of Commerce, we work every day to support policies and initiatives that improve the quality of life for our residents and strengthen our local economy. Access to highquality healthcare is a critical part of that vision.
For these reasons, the Vista Chamber Board of Directors has voted to support Measure H. We believe this partnership represents a forward-looking investment in the future of healthcare and economic vitality in North County.
This June, voters will have the opportunity to help shape the future of Tri-City Medical Center and healthcare in our region. We encourage our community to learn more about Measure H and participate in this important decision. Rachel

It’s been nearly two decades since David and Donny Firth set up a brewery in their garage. The brothers’ passion and talent led them to brewing up to fifteen beers—soon outgrowing the home space. In 2013, they got their big break and the first opportunity to move into an industrial space at 2545 Progress St. in Vista, where Booze Brothers Brewing was officially established and remains, to this day, the company’s flagship location. Developing a unique niche in the marketplace, their business continues to expand and innovate.
As the general manager, Josh Thompson, explained, the company’s success depends on its commitment to focusing on brewing the best possible beer and facilitating good times. Whether it’s the fan-favorite 1-800-Tropics Hazy IPA, the light and refreshing Los Hermanos Mexican Lager, or other popular styles, their customers come for the craft beer and stay for the fun. Furnished with a pool table, ping-pong, foosball, and other games, the space provides endless opportunities for enjoyment. Their outdoor stage is fully appointed to host concerts, featuring local and national bands. Josh said, “We are booking larger bands that typically wouldn’t play in an unassuming business park.” Additionally, every second and fourth Wednesday, customers can enjoy live performances by local musicians.
To meet the growing trend of serving food in brewery establishments, Booze Brothers quickly pivoted to accommodate this demand by opening their own Party Burgers food truck. Using fresh beef tallow for cooking has elevated the flavors to the next level. Josh shared that their Classic Smashburger, complete with two thin-smashed patties, American cheese, grilled onions, and a house-made signature party sauce, quickly became the best seller. Conveniently open from lunch through dinner, they also offer chicken sandwiches, chicken wings, and even vegetarian options. Due to the immense success of Party Burgers in Vista, the company has recently launched a full
brick-and-mortar restaurant in Fallbrook. In addition to delicious food, this newest Party Burgers location also serves all of their craft beers on tap, along with a selection of local wines.
The business’s expansion didn’t stop with beer, food, and music. Over the years, they acquired the entire building in their original location and constructed an event venue, The Woodshed, steps from the brewery. This indoor/outdoor space, featuring a living greenery wall and a private bar, provides an ideal setting for weddings, parties, and corporate functions. Following the same direction, the company also purchased a building in downtown Vista and developed the Vistonian. This stunning location, equipped to accommodate events for over 120 people, is thoughtfully designed with wood-beam ceilings, natural light, lush plants, and a beautiful bridal suite.
In the spirit of spreading good times throughout North County, Booze Brothers also opened a taproom in downtown Oceanside, featuring a small stage, a pool table, and arcade games. “We create a vibe that makes you want to stick around,” Josh noted. To make all of this possible, the company’s entire team is dedicated to serving guests and supporting the community. Besides organizing the quarterly Makers Market, which highlights local crafters and artists, they host business mixers, game events, and participate in the annual Strawberry Festival. Summer in Vista: Community, Family, and the Power of Shopping Local
There’s something special about summer in Vista. For my family, it’s the season where things slow down (as much as you can with three kids) just enough to enjoy the moments that matter most. Long evenings, warm weather, and a full calendar of local events make it one of our favorite times of year. Whether we’re grabbing a cold drink after a busy day, spending time outdoors, or connecting with friends at community gatherings, summer reminds us why we chose Vista as the place to raise our family.
Some of our favorite memories are surprisingly simple. A quick trip out for dessert after dinner. Stopping by a local market on the weekend. Catching live music, or even grabbing a show at the Moonlight Amphitheater. Wandering through a community event like the Vista Strawberry Festival or enjoying an evening just trolling Downtown Vista. These aren’t big, elaborate plans. They’re meaningful because they happen right here, in the community we’re proud to be part of.
Vista really comes alive in the summer. From local events and festivals to outdoor dining and small business promotions, there’s an energy that brings people together. One of the things that makes Vista truly unique is the perfect mixture of long-standing, legacy businesses alongside a new generation of entrepreneurs bringing fresh ideas to our city. That balance is what gives Vista its character. You can experience something brand new while still supporting businesses that have been part of the community for decades.
As Chair of the Vista Chamber, I see firsthand how much heart our local businesses put into what they do. These are the people who sponsor our kids’ teams, support local nonprofits, and show up for the community day in and day out. Summer is a critical season for many of them, and it’s also one of the easiest times for all of us to make a tangible impact.
Choosing to shop local isn’t just a nice idea, it’s a real investment in Vista. When you grab your morning coffee from a neighborhood shop, dine at a local restaurant, or bring visiting friends and family to explore what our city has to offer, you’re helping sustain the businesses that make Vista unique, and helping maintain that important mix of old and new that keeps our local economy thriving.
Tourism also plays a key role this time of year. When visitors come to Vista, they’re not just passing through, they’re experiencing our hospitality, our creativity, and our community spirit. Whether they’re attending a show, exploring our events, or discovering a new favorite spot, each positive experience helps build momentum for our local economy and reinforces Vista as a destination worth returning to.
This summer, I’d encourage you to be intentional about how you spend your time and where you spend your dollars. Try a new local spot. Attend a community event you haven’t been to before. Maybe even encourage a local business to join the Vista Chamber (shameless plug). Invite friends to experience Vista the way you do. And when you can, choose to shop local—it truly makes a difference.
For my family, summer in Vista isn’t about going far, it’s about leaning into what’s right here. It’s about connection, community, and creating memories close to home.
And that’s something worth supporting.

The Scoop on Handel’s: AwardWinning Ice Cream with a Community Connection
By Anne McDonnell
If you’re craving fresh, creamy, great-tasting ice cream, look no further than Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream in downtown Vista. Handel’s has been serving up ice cream since 1945, and all of its franchises make the ice cream daily using the highest-quality ingredients. Says Jennifer Vu, Handel’s Community Engagement Director, “Our ice-cream-makers are specifically trained in the Handel’s process, and our company motto is, ‘We never skimp!’” Handel’s was even recognized by National Geographic Magazine as the No. 1 ice cream on the planet in its 10 Best of Everything Guide
The Handel’s menu of flavors is always changing based on local favorites, seasonal offerings, and newly added flavors, but don’t worry if you’re a fan of the classics, those are always available. Graham Central Station is one of Handel’s most unique flavors and could be considered the Handel’s signature flavor, says Vu. In addition, Knot Your Average Dough, which combines cookie-dough-flavored ice cream with cookie dough pieces and salted pretzels, was launched in August 2025 to celebrate Handel’s 80th anniversary and has quickly gained in popularity. Another new flavor, Raspberry Sheet Cake, is only available while supplies last, and Peach, a customer favorite, is only offered during the summer. At the Vista location, the top-selling flavors are Knot Your Average Dough, Mango, Strawberry, Butter Pecan, and S’mores.
In addition to its ice cream shops, you can have Handel’s ice cream come to you! Handel’s operates a fully mobile ice cream catering option that is popular at weddings, birthday parties, and corporate events. The cart doesn’t require an electric power source, so it can even go to the beach! Handel’s also offers individual treats, such as chocolate-dipped pops and ice cream sandwiches, that can be served at catered events. “Ice cream really does make every event more fun,” says Vu. Handel’s is also available for online/mobile order and pick-up or delivery.
The Vista location opened on March 24, 2022. “Vista has a really great hometown community
feeling, and we love the Main Street location because it’s the center of so many great community events, including the Strawberry Festival, Fright Night, the Holiday Parade, and so many more,” says Vu. Handel’s supports many local events, and on most weeks there is a fundraiser happening at the shop for a local school, club, or scholarship program. Handel’s donates 20% of the proceeds from those events. “We feel a strong sense of responsibility to really connect with the communities where we operate,” Vu says.
The Handel’s team loves getting involved. You may see Handel’s staff out on a Saturday morning hosting a Vista community cleanup or partnering with organizations such as the Character Leaders of Vista High School or Vista Community Clinic. Handel’s also has members who serve on local non-profit boards, including the Boys and Girls Club of Vista. One new partnership is a relationship with TERi (Training, Education & Resource Institute), an organization that serves individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. This year, Handel’s hosted two interns from this program and then hired them. Says Vu, “Our entire staff has benefitted from this partnership.”
Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream not only provides a wonderful treat to its customers, it gives back to the community and wants to get involved. Vu sums it up by saying, “Handel’s loves Vista and Vista seems to really love Handel’s!”
“We feel a strong sense of responsibility to really connect with the communities where we operate."
Mayor's Message
Mayor John Franklin
Dear Friends,
#VistaSummer
Summer in Vista is one of the most exciting times of the year. Our community comes alive with events, entertainment, and opportunities to enjoy everything that makes Vista such a special place to live, work, and visit. From the Strawberry Festival on Memorial Day weekend to the final curtain call at the Moonlight Amphitheatre in September, there is truly something for everyone to enjoy.
Two of Vista’s signature summer destinations, the Moonlight Amphitheatre and the Wave Waterpark, are once again welcoming residents and visitors for another unforgettable season. This summer also marks the debut of newly renovated slides at the Wave Waterpark — the first phase of improvements planned for this treasured community attraction. Generations of Vistans have created lasting memories at both venues, and they continue to be places where families and friends gather year after year.
The Moonlight Amphitheatre also serves as the home of Vista’s annual Independence Day Celebration on July 4. This year’s event will be especially meaningful as communities across the nation commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.
For families looking to keep children active and engaged during the summer months, the City of Vista offers a variety of popular camp programs, including Day Camps at Brengle Terrace Park, Camps at Thibodo Park, and Splash Camps at the Wave Waterpark.
We are also proud to partner with the County of San Diego to present Movies in the Park, a free outdoor movie series held at City parks throughout the summer. Families are invited to bring blankets, lawn chairs, and picnics to enjoy evenings under the stars with friends and neighbors.
Downtown Vista continues to thrive during the summer season with its unique shops, local restaurants, breweries, and live entertainment. Signature events such as the Vista Rod Run in September help showcase the energy and character that make our downtown such a vibrant destination. Visitors can learn more about downtown activities and businesses by visiting downtownvista.org.
Beyond the events and attractions, Vista offers countless ways to enjoy the season — from exploring the beautiful Alta Vista Botanical Gardens to visiting the Rancho Buena Vista Adobe, the Vista Historical Society’s Museum at Rancho Minerva, or the Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum.
There is so much to experience in Vista this summer, and I encourage everyone to take advantage of all our community has to offer. For summer events and activities, visit vista.gov/recreation.
Wishing you a safe, fun, and memorable summer in Vista!

By Jennifer Madsen Jones
For many, the smell of a pepperoni pizza is just an invitation to dinner. But for Louis Archuleta, the owner of Grand Slam Pizza, it’s a time machine.
"I remember being in the Vista Christmas Parade with Vista American Little League in the early ’80s," he recalls. "From that point on, sports were my life—Pop Warner, basketball at the Boys Club, Brengle Terrace. And there was always one thing at the center of it: the pizza party."
That nostalgic connection to the community isn’t just a childhood memory; it is the heartbeat of Grand Slam Pizza and a blueprint for the business. Louis wanted to recreate the same neighborhood hub feeling he grew up with—a place where local teams belong and community investment is foundational. Since opening Grand Slam with his wife, Cathy, in 2018, the restaurant has evolved from a local eatery into a vital community fixture where the customers aren't just foot traffic—they’re the families you see at the grocery store or the neighbors down the street.
Like many businesses, Grand Slam faced difficulties during Covid. While a lot has changed in the world since then, at Grand Slam, the core mission hasn’t. “If anything, we’ve just gotten more rooted. Stronger relationships, deeper community ties, and a clearer sense of who we are and who we serve.”
One of the most rewarding parts of the journey has been watching the local kids grow up. "When we opened, my youngest daughter was eight," Louis shares. "Now she’s a freshman at Rancho, and the kids who used to come in after their games are finally old enough to work here." He likens it to an "eight-year interview process." The kids who once celebrated T-ball wins at these tables are now the teenagers behind the counter, earning their first paychecks in the same place they grew up.
The big news for Grand Slam isn't just about a second storefront; it’s about a second home for North County sports. The planned expansion toward the Oceanside/Vista border is a strategic move to bridge the gap between growing communities. "We’re looking at this next location so we can continue to serve and support more youth sports programs as the communities grow together," Louis says. For Grand Slam,
more ovens mean more sponsorships, more post-game trophies, and more space for the next generation of young athletes to gather.
This commitment to the community didn't start with a business plan; it’s a family inheritance. Both Louis and Cathy were born and raised in Vista, with roots that run deep through local institutions like St. Francis Church. Louis recalls his mother’s constant involvement at the board level and his grandfather’s dedication to the Elks Lodge. For the Archuletas, serving Vista wasn’t a choice they made in 2018, it’s simply how they were raised.
Today, that legacy and the Grand Slam vision is evolving to meet even deeper needs in Vista and the larger community.
Louis and Cathy are currently in the early stages of launching a faith-based nonprofit initiative focused on helping those hitting a rough patch. Their goal is to provide direct support for the unhoused, those facing food insecurity, and neighbors struggling with mental health or addiction.
"We’ve been incredibly blessed by this community," Louis says. "It’s our responsibility to give that back. Whether it’s a kid after a game, a single parent who needs a break, or someone who hasn't had a hot meal in a while—those are the people we want to serve."
In a fast-changing world, Grand Slam Pizza is a reminder that a great slice and a kind heart can still go a long way, proving that in a shifting economy, the most valuable currency is local roots.
Host your next party, catch a game, or just stop in for a slice any time M-Su from 11am to 8pm, at 1910 Shadowridge Dr. #101 in Vista. You can place an order to go online at www.grandslamvista.com, or call them at 760-599-1199.
Staycation for Dogs
By Miguel Martinez
Man’s best friend deserves the best, and Staycation for Dogs, the locallyowned dog boarding service, believes and crafts this reality. Owner Jenny Bosecker and General Manager Izzy Flynn work everyday to ensure the dogs in their care are treated like their own and inhabit an environment that feels like “home away from home.” Staycation has gone through several past iterations but has been officially in business since late 2023.
Since then, they’ve structured their business solely around the dogs that walk through their door and are mindful of each dogs’ unique personality and needs. Jenny shares, “Other places have a one-size-fits all approach… We want to have a service that is tailored to the unique needs of each pet and family.” They emphasize individual services with their pre-boarding meet and greets which take around four hours to complete. Izzy adds, “We always make sure they’re comfortable coming into our care, and have them see how we run things. It’s really getting to know them on a personal level.” Each owner, or pet parent, is shown first hand what Staycation offers with their “homey” environment and custom approach to onboarding.
Each dog varies in size, temperament, age, personality, and more which the team takes into consideration when dividing groups. Additionally, staff are always present, day and night, to ensure no dog is left alone and are always cared for 24/7. When Jenny took over, the company was finding its new footing and prioritized care, customer satisfaction, and communication which can be seen today. Jenny explains, “We learned that the only way you’re going to get better is by learning from the experts…we did yearly pet care conferences and talked to other veterinarians, people who were well known in the industry…It was definitely a labor of love.” Jenny and Izzy’s high standards have positively impacted their work
environment and connection with customers who they communicate with regularly.
Staycation will alert pet parents of any situation that requires their immediate attention which owners and local veterinarians immediately notice. Over the years, Staycation leaves local veterinarians impressed by their sense of care and action leading to unofficially recommendations by them. Their Google and Yelp reviews reflect this with high ratings and
"We want to have a service that is tailored to the unique needs of each pet and family.”
positive experiences which Jenny and Izzy attribute to establishing a personal connection and understanding the owner and dog’s history.
Staycation for Dogs are led by owners who have built a community out of their business and prioritize the well being of their dogs. All members of the team know that a dog is part of the family and are trained to meet the highest of standards set by Jenny and
Izzy. Both share, “we want people to leave knowing their dog was taken care of and that their voices were heard. We want to give people a sense of relief and happiness knowing we will do our best for them.” Staycation is open to all dogs no matter the conditions and can be reached through phone: 760-295-5092 and their website:https://www.staycationfordogs.com. They are located at 814 Crestview Rd, Vista CA 92081.
The Vista Chamber of Commerce was proud to be the regional host the live Civics Bee competition this spring, bringing together eight outstanding middle school students from across our community to showcase their knowledge of civics, government, and civic engagement. Each competitor demonstrated critical thinking, confidence, and passion for making a difference in their communities, making this an inspiring event to witness.
We are incredibly proud of all eight students who participated in the live competition and grateful to the families, educators, judges, sponsors, and community supporters who helped make the event a success. Congratulations to our top 3 winners, who will advance to the California State Finals in Simi Valley at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library & Museum. We look forward to cheering them on as they represent Vista on the state stage and continue inspiring the next generation of civic leaders.

Jim Desmond
San Diego County Supervisor
Every summer, the Strawberry Festival reminds me why I love this city. Tens of thousands of neighbors fill Historic Downtown Vista. Families pushing strollers. Kids with redstained smiles. Local growers, small business owners, first responders, and volunteers who make this community what it is. There is nothing like it anywhere else in the county.
That spirit, neighbors showing up for one another, is the same spirit I try to bring to the Board of Supervisors every single day.
Vista is a city where families put down roots, where small businesses build something from the ground up, and where generations gather on Main Street to celebrate together. Representing you has been one of the highest honors of my career.
Even though this is my last year as your County Supervisor, I do not plan to go out quietly.
I am here to help.
That is not a slogan. It is the job. Whether you need help cutting through county red tape, navigating a permit, finding senior services for a parent, accessing veterans resources, or reporting a problem in your neighborhood, my office is here to get you answers.
We pick up the phone. We return calls. We show up.
Over the past year, our team has worked alongside Vista families on the issues that matter most. Public safety. Homelessness and mental health. Housing that working families
can actually afford. Cleaner neighborhoods. Better roads. Real support for veterans and seniors. Protecting the local character that makes Vista, Vista.
There is more work ahead, and I plan to spend every remaining day of this term fighting for the people of Vista.
If you see me at the Strawberry Festival this year, please come say hello. Bring your questions. Tell me what is working and what is not. The best ideas almost always come from the people living it every day, not from a government office.
To everyone who calls Vista home, thank you. Thank you for the businesses you build, the kids you raise, the neighbors you look out for, and the community you keep strong year after year.
Have a wonderful summer, Vista. Enjoy the festival. And remember, my office is always just a phone call away.
With gratitude, Jim Desmond

In the heart of
Vista, a new kind of travel agency is proving that the best vacations aren't just booked—they’re protected. Adventure With DNA, a local franchise of Cruise Planners, is the brainchild of motherdaughter team Denay and Alana. The name is a clever nod to their initials and their literal bond, but for this duo, travel is more than a family business; it’s a mission born out of a desire to turn "never again" vacation stories into seamless, lifelong memories.
While they officially launched their franchise in 2024, the pair have been the "unofficial" travel gurus for friends and family for years. Alana brought professional hospitality experience from her time with Hyatt Hotels, but the true catalyst for their business was a personal breaking point.
During a 2023 family cruise, Alana’s son—who is autistic—faced severe bullying. Despite being seasoned travelers, the family found themselves without support or advocacy from the cruise line. "There are people spending their hard-earned money and because they are not sure what to do, they settle and are disappointed," Alana shares. "They deserve better."
That experience transformed Adventure With DNA from a travel service into a passionate and dedicated resource for traveler advocacy and inclusive travel.
Today, Alana and Denay occupy a unique space in the local industry: judgment-free specialists for families navigating both visible and invisible disabilities. Alana personally vets "certified" travel suppliers, questioning their actual processes to ensure they truly
understand the nuances of and are capable of providing stellar, supportive services for the precise needs of each traveler. Whether it’s managing difficult transitions, loud noises, or new environments, they ensure their clients have an advocate in their corner before they ever leave the house.
However, their expertise isn't limited to a single niche; they are a high-value resource for anyone who wants to reclaim their time. “You don’t need a personal chef, a house cleaner, or a nanny, but many see the value in asking for help outside of themselves,” Alana explains. “Travel is similar. You can book it yourself, but we do the heavy lifting, find insider pricing, and secure extra perks you can't find online.”
Remarkably, these high-touch services come at no cost to the traveler. As a home-based business, they offer the "luxury of help" without the luxury price tag, leveraging industry connections to find perks and insider pricing that DIY booking sites often miss.
Their commitment to "better" extends deep into the North County community. As active members of the Vista and Oceanside Chambers of Commerce—with Alana serving on the ambassador committee in Vista—they are fixtures in local leadership. From volunteering with the Women’s Club of Vista to Alana’s role as the Young Person Representative for the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA), they are dedicated to making the travel industry more inclusive and sustainable.
For Denay and Alana, the goal isn't just a transaction; it's about being there for people. In a world of automated booking bots, Adventure With DNA offers something refreshingly human: a pair of experts who treat your family’s vacation with the same fierce protection as their own.
To explore your next adventure with Alana and Denay, visit their website at www.adventurewithdna.com, email to alanaoneal@cruiseplanners.com, or call them at 760-626-6441. Follow the Adventure on their socials, @adventurewithdna_ on Instagram, and @adenturewithdna.com on Facebook.

SAN DIEGO BUSINESS JOURNAL
Food Bank is Vista’s Great Neighbor
By Julie Smith Taylor
Good neighbors have qualities like kindness, generosity, helpfulness, and friendliness. Lucky for us, we have a “great” neighbor in the Jacob Cushman San Diego Food Bank located in its new, 60K sf warehouse at 2260 Oak Ridge Way. We can all be thankful for the positive, daily impact the Food Bank has on our community.
Did You Know?
Last fiscal year, the North County warehouse distributed a whopping 700K lbs of food per month or a total of 9.2M lbs. in our region.
It employs 14 full-time staff members and a team of volunteers.
North County volunteers build weekend meal bags for the Food 4 Kids backpack program. It serves 3,700 elementary school students every weekend county-wide.
A Client Choice Pantry allows 5K patrons a month, or 250 people per day, six days a week to select food for their households.
Its Food Center allows 90 nonprofit partners to shop for items to stock their own food banks across the region. This includes pantries at all major colleges, at YMCA Armed Services locations, and for mass distributions.
The San Diego Food Bank annually serves 450 nonprofit organizations countywide.
“Now more than ever it’s time to work together, to help each other.”
“Our stats are high because there has been an increase in food insecurity in recent years due to inflation, food costs, and overall rising prices,” says David Perez, General Manager of the Food Bank. “Food insecurity does not have one look, age, or ethnicity. We see a lot of working families, senior citizens, and those with housing insecurity.”
The Food Bank sources food in many different ways. It purchases fresh produce from local farmers while other items are purchased in bulk from major food suppliers in California and across the country. Volunteers help sort and distribute the items for the Food Bank’s partners. It distributes food in two ways - through nonprofit partners and direct distributions. It also hosts annual food drives.
“Now more than ever it’s time to work together, to help each other,” he says.
“We want to develop new ways we can collaborate more with our neighbors.” Perez says he wants the Food Bank to be a community hub and more of a one-stop shop for all sorts of resources. For example, office and meeting spaces inside the warehouse are available for other nonprofits. The Food Bank also partners with Goodwill Industries to offer resume assistance while Vista Community Clinic comes out regularly to promote its services. Onsite CalFresh assistance is also provided along with Senior food boxes for qualifying seniors. ”These are all examples of the wrap-around services we provide,” says Perez. “We believe

in making commitments to our community, clients, and partners and we want people to know we’re definitely here to stay!”
The Food Bank’s expanded warehouse space now features a 2,000 sf refrigerator unit and a huge 4,000 sf industrial freezer. This saves $400K annually in off-site storage facility rental fees and diesel fuel costs that kept large trailers cold 24/7. Perez says that all that money is now going right back into programs. He said they are also looking into solar power to help defray their energy costs even further.
Perez, who is a native San Diegan, loves living in Vista with his wife and two small children. “The community has really rallied behind the Food Bank and it’s another reason we joined the Chamber,” he explains. “Fundamentally, we are a nonprofit business and the more we know about each other, the more we can better support each other as members.”
It is exciting to announce that our 2025-26 school year set new records for student achievement. The most recent 2025 California School Dashboard for student achievement reports a 5.7% increase in English language arts and a 4.2% increase in Mathematics. This confirms strong academic success across all grade spans. Our graduation rate continues to climb, showing a 1.9% increase with 88.8% of our students graduating within four years. This is an impressive number considering that this rate includes our two continuation high schools where students who are credit deficient attend to catch up. Our three comprehensive high schools are over 90%, with Mission Vista High School over 99%. Our College and Career metric increased by 4.6%, showing more than half of our graduates completed one or more career pathways while in high school in addition to their regular graduation requirements. Our focus on defeating generational poverty has led to the greatest gains we have ever made academically for English learners, homeless, and students with disabilities. In fact, these student groups doubled, even tripled, the academic achievement of the district average in English language arts, mathematics, science and graduation rate. This is a perfect example of closing the achievement gap.
We continue to accelerate achievement in the most rigorous courses at the high school level. We have expanded student participation in advanced placement courses. The total number of exams taken have nearly doubled over the past four years, what's more is that the number of scores of three or higher has more than doubled in the same time period. Perhaps most impressive is that one in three graduates not only completed one or more advanced placement courses, they also earned college credit. We have many students walk across the stage to receive their diploma with more than five college courses already on their college transcript. Our guaranteed admission partnership with Cal State San Marcos continues to expand adding a dual enrollment pathway at Rancho Buena Vista High School for students exploring the health care field. This new dual enrollment pathway is designed to reduce college completion from four to three years because the students are enrolled at Cal State San Marcos while in high school. We are poised to add dual enrollment to Vista High and Mission Vista High in the fall. As our year comes to a close, it is with great pride and joy that we celebrate accelerating achievement for all students.

With a rich history of providing outstanding and affordable educational programs in North County, Palomar College continues to create new opportunities for its more than 29,000 students. Beginning this fall, Palomar is launching its very first baccalaureate degree in Building Performance and Environmental Design. It’s ideally suited for students interested in architecture, interior design, and building information/modeling programs. Any of these three pathways can directly feed into the new Bachelor of Science degree.
A state law passed in 2014 expands the opportunity for more community colleges to develop and offer baccalaureate degrees. However, there’s more to it.
Palomar had to go through a rigorous application process with the state before the program was approved.
“When you design these programs, they have to meet a labor market need in the region,” says Tina Recalde, DPT, Interim Superintendent/President at Palomar. “We have a huge amount of industry support for the program and many business leaders have participated in designing the curriculum. Our chamber membership is critical in that we work with the business community as a primary work force and economic development institution.”
The Palomar Community College District was established in 1946 and covers more than 2,500 square miles. To better meet the needs of its growing student population across such a large area it established education centers in Escondido, Rancho Bernardo, and Fallbrook. The Escondido education center was the first to open in 1989. The education center in Rancho Bernardo opened in 2018 at 11111 Rancho Bernardo Road and will welcome the first cohort of the Bachelor of Science degree this fall.
Since 2018, students in the most northern part of the district have taken advantage of classes offered at the Fallbrook education center. Recalde is pleased to announce that construction of its first permanent building is already underway and is expected to open in 2027. The building will house expanded student services and instructional areas, provide a

health center, a bookstore, library, and food and nutrition center along with additional classrooms and other traditional services. “It’s a huge step forward,” says Recalde.
There’s even more news! In the fall, Palomar will open an athletic fieldhouse on the San Marcos campus. It is the final piece of a modernization and expansion project dating back to 2006 when Prop M passed. The new athletic complex includes a state-of-the-art football stadium and equally impressive softball stadium.
“The fieldhouse completion brings together space for concessions, ticket sales, and an athletic training room,” says Recalde. “It will also offer academic services because we value the scholarship of our athletes. Maintaining academic excellence
is key as many of our students transfer to major universities on scholarships,” says Recalde.
Starting in May, Palomar will be hosting campus tours for graduating seniors. “Comet Commit Day” is set for Saturday, May 30th for prospective students and their parents. Enrollment opens on May 11th for Summer and Fall classes, but it’s never too late to sign up! “We want to encourage people of all ages to consider Palomar as a place where we equip students with the knowledge, technical, and career skills needed to succeed in today’s job market,” says Recalde. “We offer more than 250 degrees and certificate programs. It’s a place where anything you want to achieve, you can learn at Palomar College!”

Watkins
By Elizabeth Bickford
Watkins Wellness has been an integral part of the Vista community since the 1970s. Watkins Wellness, a division of the Masco Corporation, manufactures spas, hot tubs, and aquatic devices. This global organization features manufacturing in Mexico, New Mexico the UK and Norway. They began to call Vista home in 1977, starting on a small chicken farm and now their business is known as one of the best employers in San Diego County.
As one of the largest employers in Vista, Watkins Wellness is hailed for their supportive culture and encouragement of a strong work life balance for their employees. Nothing speaks larger of the employee satisfaction rate than the 12-plus-year employment average. The focus on work life balance is key to retaining and cultivating long employee relationships.
On top of the welcoming atmosphere the definition of job roles, competitive pay, and the sense of value has led many people to a role in Watkins Wellness. The Watkins Way is how they describe their holistic approach to employee care and management. They focus on the growth and satisfaction of the individual while promoting ethical and transparent behavior. Indivial and professional development play a pivotal role in motivating employee growth and retention throughout the organization.
In addition to their focus on employee satisfaction, their support and integration into the community have become part of the Watkins Way! Their value system encourages volunteerism within their organization. One organization that the business focuses on is the Boys and Girls Club of Vista. Several employees are supporters of the nonprofit organization and were alumni of the organization itself. To show support for the Boys and Girls Club, employees are part of the Diamond Gala’s executive committee.
Stephen and Ana Acuna have attended the Boys and Girls Club Annual Diamond Gala for multiple years. Stephen, a Boys and Girls Club Alumni, recalls the fond memories of summers spent at the club in his youth, calling it a “blessing to my family and my friends.” He further went on to say, “I love the fact the I now work for Watkins Wellness that has a strong bond with BGCV!” Ana added, “I’m honored that Watkins supports this organization and was happy to attend the galas the past two years, which Watkins graciously sponsored.” This type of support for organizations close to the hearts of their employees is one example of how the organization works to support their employees’ needs as well as the Vista community.
Another large supporter of the Boys and Girls Club is the Vista Chamber of Commerce. Watkins Wellness and the Vista Chamber of Commerce have had a long-standing relationship. Polly Edwards, Manager of Internal Communications and Social Impact at Watkins Wells, shared that Watkins is looking forward to increasing their engagement as they have added a member to the VCC Board of Directors. This partnership will continue to blossom and work to spread positive works for the community and local businesses.
To learn more about Watkins community service and employment opportunities, please visit their website: jobs.masco.com/watkinswellness. Watkins Wellness is located at 80 Park Center Drive in Vista, CA.
