Welcome to Žirovnica, in a green valley on the doorstep of the Karavanke mountains, where forests outline the edges of the fragrant meadows. The wealth of our literature, apiculture and archaeological heritage is an inexhaustible source for ever-new experiences and amazing stories. You will find them everywhere – on hiking trails and alpine meadows that lie in the protected Natura 2000 area, in the small secret village at the top of Ajdna that is protected by giants, in birth houses where the greatest writing talents in Slovenia were born and created their works, at village troughs, where you can fill your water bottles with drinking water, on painted beehive frontal panels, which are a speciality of folk heritage, in a cup of homemade tea, and among hospitable locals. In our green destination, we are proud to tell local stories and preserve them for the next generations.

Cesarska cesta
Imperial Road
Cesarska, Bela ali Velika cesta so ljudska imena za staro deželno cesto iz Ljubljane preko Dežele, kakor domačini imenujejo ta prostor, na Podkoren, v Beljak in na Dunaj. Zgrajena je bila leta 1734 v času cesarja Karla VI. Domačini so jo poimenovali Cesarska cesta. Ime Bela cesta pa se nanaša na barvo cestišča z belim gruščem. Gradnjo Cesarske ceste je v začetku 18. stoletja spodbudil razvoj trgovine in prometnih sredstev. Nova cesta je omogočala uporabo velikih dvo- in štirivprežnih voz, t. i. parizarjev. Prebivalci Smokuča so se po njeni izgradnji začeli množično ukvarjati s furmanstvom, prevozom blaga na večje razdalje in za tuje naročnike. Dotekati je začel denar, ki je omogočal nastanek velikih kmetij. V prvotni obliki je ohranjen le del nekdanje Cesarske ceste od križišča Hlebce do Begunj pri Zapužah in Breznice. Cesarska cesta je pomemben in prepoznaven element evidentirane kulturne krajine Studenčice. The Imperial Road, the White Road or the Great Road – these are all folk names for the old road from Ljubljana across the Country, as this territory is called by locals, to Podkoren, Villach and Vienna. It was built in 1734 during the reign of Habsburg Emperor Charles VI. Locals called it the Imperial Road. The name White Road relates to the white road gravel. Construction of the Emperor’s Road at the start of the 18th century stimulated the development of trade and means of transport. The new road enabled the use of a lot of two- and four - cattle draught wagons. Following its construction, the inhabitants of village Smokuč began to trade en masse in transport by horse and cart, transporting goods over long distances and for foreign clients. Money began to flow in, which enabled the creation of larger farms. Only part of the former Imperial Road – from the intersection of villages Hlebce to Zapuže, near Begunje na Gorenjskem, and Breznica – has been preserved in its original form. The Imperial Road is an important and recognisable element of the documented cultural landscape of Studenčice.
