INTRODUCTION

Executive

SUMMARY Winston-Salem earns its hyphen. Two names. One destination with a character entirely its own. Historic streets boast museums and modern craft breweries, Moravian stars glow above a skyline of innovative businesses, and energy can be felt in pulse points in every corner of the city. In Winston-Salem, the past is not a relic but a living, breathing reason to visit. That duality is the soul of Twice as Nice...Come on in, and it is the lens through which every decision in this plan is made. FY 27 is a year of intention. The brand is established. The momentum is real. Data drives the strategy to deliver effective, efficient cross-platform reach. By optimizing the impact of the message, target audiences and leaning on expanded brand awareness, Winston-Salem claims its place on the map of North Carolina tourism. A strategic media relations program puts Winston-Salem in front of the right travel writers, influencers, and audiences through themed media FAMs, paid-to-participate television exposure, and a content creator network that generates authentic coverage month after month. Social media moves beyond posting and into genuine community-building with even more local content creators, short-form video and compelling storytelling. Email marketing works as hard as the open rates deserve, segmented and timed to meet travelers

exactly where they are in the trip planning journey. The group sales team is on the road, in the room earning business the old fashion way – by showing up and building genuine relationships. You can expect to find them going the extra mile, from lunch meetings to after-hours events and national tradeshows; they bring the energy every time. Building the pipeline that fills hotel rooms, the team is focused and ready to support the economic engine that fuels Forsyth County. The venues are ready. The team is focused. The FY 27 plan provides sharper tools, stronger marketing support, and a destination story that makes every sales conversation easier to start and more compelling to close. Woven through all of it is something new: artificial intelligence as a strategic and practical organizational capability. This acts as a force multiplier that expands what our team can produce, sharpening communication and improving workflows, while also ensuring our content is visible in AI overviews and digital spaces where the next generation of travelers is already deciding where to go. This Sales and Marketing Plan is focused on targeting the right audiences with compelling messages to increase overnight visitation to Forsyth County and position Winston-Salem as a top Southeast destination.

OVERALL

MARKETING STRATEGY Visit Winston-Salem enters FY 27 with a strategic plan to inspire curiosity, engage travelers with compelling content, and convert that interest into overnight visits. What changes is the depth and sophistication of the tools available to execute it. Artificial intelligence accelerates content production and sharpens targeting across every channel. The "Twice as Nice" campaign, introduced in September 2024, has dramatically increased the reach and impact of the marketing efforts. This fall, the campaign creative will evolve to You+, a strategy informed by research and built to reach new audiences in new ways. Bandwango brings digital passport technology to the visitor experience for the first time, transforming trails, neighborhoods, and culinary itineraries into interactive discoveries that keep visitors engaged longer and spending more time and money. SEO and answer engine optimization expand to meet travelers not just where they are searching today, but where search itself is headed in the future. And a growing network of local content creators puts authentic storytelling at the center of the social media strategy.

The brand strategy engages partners providing opportunities to expand the collective reach with a next level co-op program that gives local businesses additional, effective ways to amplify their visibility alongside Visit Winston-Salem's marketing campaigns.

Storytelling is critical to ensure visitors know what all there is to see, do, and experience. The previous content plan focused on expanding the storytelling about Forsyth County's nearby towns Lewisville, Clemmons, and Kernersville, as well as outdoor experiences. In FY 27, the content plan will build on that by enhancing food culture storytelling.

FY 27 TARGET MARKETS Visit Winston-Salem's audience strategy moves beyond broad demographics to target high-intent travelers through key passion pillars: Events, History, Arts/Culture, Dining, Outdoors, Sports and Entertainment. By segmenting audiences based on specific interests, the campaign delivers tailored messaging that resonates with personal travel motivators, positioning Winston-Salem as the centerpiece of a multi-faceted experience that aligns with each traveler's lifestyle and reaching potential visitors with the highest opportunity for conversion.

PRIMARY MARKETS THE STRATEGY: High-frequency brand awareness and always-on channel CHARLOTTE, NC Dominant across all seasons with high website engagement. Charlotte consistently ranks as the top market by visitation share and digital volume, making it the anchor of the always-on paid media strategy. RALEIGH-DURHAM, NC Consistent visitation volume and growth. A reliable, high-intent market with strong repeat visitation and growing session engagement across all seasons.

ATLANTA, GA Visitation volume is lower than North Carolina markets, but the length of stay is double, averaging 2.2 nights. Atlanta visitors stay longer, spend more, and represent a high-value overnight audience that justifies continued investment.

SECONDARY MARKETS THE STRATEGY: Target for specific seasonal campaigns to increase length of stay GREATER NORTH CAROLINA The broader North Carolina market consistently holds collective volume of visitation and strong site engagement rate with healthy repeat visitation. Includes Chapel Hill, Hickory-Lenoir-Morganton, Wilmington, and Fayetteville among others. SOUTH CAROLINA Between population growth and longer length of stay from key markets in the state, there is significant

10

untapped potential. South Carolina is cost-efficient to target and influence. Key markets include GreenvilleSpartanburg, Myrtle Beach, Columbia, and Charleston. WASHINGTON, DC Target Spring/Summer only. Washington, DC delivers high household income, strong repeat visitation, a long length of stay at 2.2 nights, and a high overnight percentage. A Spring/Summer seasonal flight captures the high-value traveler at the right moment.

WEBSITE OPTIMIZATION

CORE STRATEGY The way travelers find destinations is changing faster than at any point in the history of digital marketing. Organic search traffic has been shifting, with AI-powered answer engines increasingly resolving travel queries without a single click ever reaching a destination's website. Visit Winston-Salem's website strategy is evolving from a get-the-click approach to a give-the-answer philosophy. The goal is to position the website as the most authoritative, content-rich source for Winston-Salem travel information, ensuring the website feeds Google AI Overviews, answer engines, and AI-generated recommendations with accurate, compelling, experience-driven content that puts the destination at the top of the answer, not just the search result. • Build and continuously expand a library of SEO and AEO-optimized content, including destination stories, curated itineraries, Q&Aformatted pages, and experience-driven landing pages, that positions Winston-Salem as the definitive resource for trip planning and ensures visibility across both traditional search results and AIgenerated travel recommendations. • Anticipate and adapt to the rise of clickless search by creating content designed to be cited, surfaced, and shared by AI answer engines, accepting that success in this environment is measured not only by traffic volume but by the authority and presence the destination commands in the answers travelers receive. • Integrate Bandwango trail experiences, food culture content, and seasonal campaign landing pages directly into the site architecture, ensuring the website tells the full destination story and converts visitor interest into longer stays and deeper exploration. • Continue to elevate the storytelling by adding rich culinary content to compliment the stories on the wine region, outdoor experiences, things to do, historical places to stay, events and other content.

WISE MAN BREWING

• Grow the email database through strategic partner contests and promotions that convert social audiences and website visitors into engaged subscribers, while repurposing the destination's best blog content, videos, and campaign assets. • Distribute a refreshed monthly e-newsletter that reflects what Winston-Salem offers across every season, featuring event roundups, culinary stories, trail highlights, and inspiration drawn from the destination's most compelling content.

SALES STRATEGY The foundation of Visit Winston-Salem's sales success has always been relationships. In FY 27, the team will continue to build on this momentum. The FY 27 sales strategy is built around three enduring pillars.
