YOUR VENUE IS A CENTRAL FEATURE OF YOUR WEDDING DAY, SO MAKE DECISIONS REGARDING THE LOCATION DU JOUR WITH CARE. questions to ask

By Samantha Manzella

Smaller, more intimate settings, like restaurants, suit smaller wedding parties. For larger parties, larger spaces fit the bill: think open courtyards, spacious vineyards, or even grand, elegant ballrooms.
Vintage-inspired themes lend themselves to rustic settings, like backyard barns or farm grounds. Couples aiming for a more elegant look can seek out local vineyards, orchards, or resorts for stately and stylish surroundings.
DON’T FORGET YOUR SURROUNDINGS; BEAR IN MIND THE THEME OR “LOOK” YOU WANT FOR YOUR CEREMONY, AND CHOOSE A VENUE AND SURROUNDING AREA THAT MESHES WELL WITH YOUR VISION.
If you and your partner are the no-fuss type, consider channeling your attitude toward your special day. Try holding your ceremony at a local park, or encourage guests to bring homemade dishes in lieu of gifts for a new take on a potluck party!
Be sure to keep your guests in mind: for any outdoor ceremony, rent a tent to shelter your family and friends from potential weather hazards. To keep transportation between your ceremony and reception as seamless as possible, offer your guests group transportation to and from each event. Ease of accessibility is key; ensure that all facilities are accessible to elderly guests or guests with disabilities or injuries.

• How big is our guest list?
• How much of our budget are we willing to allocate toward a venue?
• How much do we and our families value traditional notions of what a wedding should look like?
• Are the grounds protected from any potential weather concerns? If not, can the venue be adapted to be more comfortable for our guests?
• How easily can the majority of our guests reach the venue’s location?
• Should our ceremony and reception be at the same venue or in different spaces?
• Do we want those in charge of our venue to take care of preparing and serving food, hiring waitstaff, choosing a band, etc., or do we want to outsource catering and entertainment?

What to serve at the wedding reception? A few factors that will be taken into consideration are the number of people, your venue and location, your budget, and style of the event. Then, of course, you’ll want to share your excellent taste in contemporary fresh and local food with
your guests. If you’re planning a Hudson Valley wedding, you’ll want to show off our abundance of locally grown foods, humanely raised meats, and the gourmet caterers, restaurants, and food trucks that supply them. We have all types of food to fit all types of weddings, from casual to elegant.
If you’re planning a Hudson Valley wedding, you’ll want to show off our abundance of locally grown foods, humanely raised meats, and the gourmet caterers, restaurants, and food trucks that supply them.
bbq or pig roast: for an outdoor or indoor reception
This is a versatile and delicious menu option that can be a huge hit for both casual and sit-down wedding receptions. For an outdoor daytime wedding, the pig can be roasted on the spit as a focal point of the festivities. For a more elegant affair, the meat can be served while the roasting and carving are off-site.
Hot dogs, hamburgers, and BBQ can easily be dressed up for a casual wedding reception. These traditional American foods can be prepared with a gourmet, even local and organic, twist by using meats from a free-range, grass-fed farm and providing an array of distinctive and delectable homemade condiments and toppings.
To go with this theme, how about a stand with different flavored lemonades manned by a younger member of the family? It’s a great way to get the party started.
F amily style: F or R ustic, G arden, or B ackyard weddings
Family style meals are the perfect middle ground between the plated meal option and the more casual buffet reception. Everyone is seated at the same time and digs into large shared platters of food placed on the tables. It instantly creates an intimate atmosphere and promotes conversation. Guests can help themselves to as
much food as they like. Costs are generally estimated to be about the same as a buffet service, with the benefit of having food that is served freshly cooked, not overheated in buffet chafers. Another bonus: there is less time involved in serving the meal, leaving more time for toasts, cake, and dancing.

Food bars take the buffet concept to new heights of creativity, both with regard to the food and the presentation. They are smaller food stations that feature delicious, customizable concoctions. You can decorate them to be as funky or luxurious as you like. A manned food bar might offer raw shellfish, perhaps with a chef shucking the oysters.
The possibilities are endless: a build-your-own-taco bar, a mashed potato station with gourmet toppings, a delectable pizza bar. How about an olive oil tasting station with olives, artisanal bread, and dried fruit, or a cheese station using some of the finest local cheeses, paired with apples and prosciutto?
Anything with toppings, sauces, condiments, and sides makes for a terrific food bar offering. Who doesn’t love to assemble their own edible creations? Food bars are a natural born fit for desserts and cocktails. How about a Mimosa bar with fresh fruits and a selection of organic juices, decorated in floral splendor? Cheers!
food trucks: for any outdoor reception
Food trucks can be the perfect answer, not just to complement with desserts or late night snacks, but for the whole meal service.
Food trucks can serve Korean BBQ, lobster, Caribbean food, crêpes, fish tacos, Polish food, Mediterranean food, Pan Asian food, noodles—virtually ANY kind of specialty food you can come up with. You may also opt for deluxe versions of comfort food, like several different types of grilled cheese sandwiches or mac and cheese.
Even the classic pizza truck can be transformed into a gourmet kitchen, serving not only several kinds
of unique twists on pizza, but also firing up a few other appetizers in that oven, like pear and blue cheese pastry triangles.
Your ice cream truck can concoct alcohol-infused ice creams and sorbets. How about a whiskey vanilla bean cone or a fresh watermelon-mint-rum sorbet! They can offer non-dairy options for your vegan guests, as well.
One benefit of the food truck is that it can drive right up to the venue if you are planning a reception in a remote area, such as in the mountains or on the water. No kitchen space necessary.

lobster/clambake: for the wedding on the water
What makes a great clambake? Lobsters, clams, chowder, maybe some BBQ chicken, sides of corn bread and delightful side dishes. It’s a great choice if you’re having a wedding near the water and if these foods can be sourced locally.

B uffets: F or T he C asual R eception
Your guests will be able to eat what they want, as much as they want. Buffets can be less expensive than a plated meal, depending on the number of servers you won’t need, balanced with the extra food and equipment rentals that you will. There is nothing that says the food can’t be gourmet all the way. You can still offer your guests the most delicious and imaginative cuisine.
A brunch wedding can be as festive or as casual as you like. The food can be on the simpler side, such as a fun cereal bar with a continental breakfast spread, along with some signature egg dishes. Or you can serve up gourmet frittatas and poached salmon. Smoked items are becoming more popular, not just salmon and sable, but tuna bacon and salmon bacon, smoked tuna, and smoked meats. The booze budget will be reduced because of the time of day, and your guests can still enjoy Bellinis, Bloody Marys and Tequila Sunrises. And don’t forget outstanding fresh brewed coffee and cappucinos!

T raditional P lated M eal: F or the T raditional or F ormal R eception
This is the most elegant choice if you are planning a seated meal. One advantage is that the speeches, dances, and cake-cutting can be accommodated more easily as the various courses are served to everyone at the same time. It may not even be more expensive—you are likely to save on food costs as the amounts of food can be more accurately estimated, unlike a buffet. Typically, guests can choose from two or three entrées beforehand so that your caterer knows exactly how much to make.

“How can we save money on our bar and satisfy our guests?”
This is something I hear people worry about while planning their wedding or event. Whether it’s “What wine should we buy?”, “How many glasses will we need?”, or “How many bottles of whiskey will be enough for all the cousins and uncles?”, the bar always stirs up a lot of questions. It’s a centerpiece at many weddings that takes some figuring out.
With the enormous number of choices we see at every bar or restaurant, it’s hard to narrow down and decide on a few bottles to please everyone. Not to mention we all have a mixologist friend who will be disappointed in the vermouth selection or lack of Campari for his Negroni. When I sit down with clients to talk bar numbers, I always suggest a specialty cocktail to alleviate some of these problems.

Photo by Val & Jenn Photography.
For a party of 75 people, buying a full bar can mean
three bottles each of five different types of alcohol, plus mixers, liqueurs, and flavorings.
There’s nothing wrong with a full bar; in fact, I love making cocktails to order from scratch—it’s a great way to build a relationship with customers and put on a show for the party. But if you’re working with a budget, a specialty cocktail is a great solution. For a party of 75 people, buying a full bar can mean three bottles each of five different types of alcohol, plus mixers, liqueurs, and flavorings. This can be simplified greatly by sticking to one cocktail, simple wine and beer choices, and a couple extras to flesh out your bar.
By making cocktails in bulk before the party, we can control spending and consumption a little more closely. Keeping it simple with an alcohol base, a strong flavor, and something to dilute our cocktail is a great way to start every time. If we add a couple of simple bar items—like sweet or dry vermouth, bitters, or an aperitif like Aperol—our cocktail selection doubles or triples instantly. Try one of these specialty cocktails to serve at your next big event or party, or sit down with an experienced bartender to create something special.

Combine whiskey (kick your whiskey up by leaving cinnamon sticks inside for up to a week prior to serving), Madeira, ginger liqueur, cranberry and lemon juices in a large vessel or punch bowl. Spoon 2 ounces into a highball glass filled with ice, garnish with cranberries and a mint sprig, and fill with sparkling water. For a special treat, freeze cranberries and mint in a bundt pan to keep your punch bowl chilled. for the cooler months
• 1 Liter Bourbon Whiskey
• 1 1/2 Cups Madeira Wine
• 1/2 Cup Ginger Liqueur
• 1/4 Cup Unsweetened Cranberry Juice
• Juice of 3 Lemons
• Sparkling Water
• Freshly Grated Nutmeg
• Cranberry & Mint Garnish

for the warmer months
• 1 Liter Vodka
• 8 Ounces Rosemary Simple Syrup
• 2 Liters Fresh Grapefruit Juice
• Rosemary Garnish
Combine vodka, simple syrup (equal parts water and sugar
dissolved, then poured over rosemary sprigs to flavor for at least 3 days), and grapefruit juice. Pour over ice in a lowball glass and garnish with a sprig of rosemary.

It used to be simple: wedding feast = cake.
And for sheer drama, nothing beats a gracefully tiered and artfully frosted wedding cake with a topper.
BY ANNE PYBURN CRAIG
But today’s couples are all about overturning dogmatic dictates to find the true meaning within, and the true meaning of a delicious dessert is pretty straightforward: it’s the final grace note of love for the people you’re feeding.
Like everything else about your wedding celebration, your dessert approach begins and ends with your budget and your dream; however, considering the tastes of your families and friends just makes a sweet experience sweeter.

cakes themselves have been transformed. consider these design options for the overall look:
• Metallic
• Monogrammed
• Ombre (shading from light to dark in a single hue)
• Abstract-painted (marbleized, stained glass, tie-dyed)
• Illustrated
• Naked (works best with luscious fillings visible)
• Geometric
decoration, too, isn’t just about fondant roses anymore you can enhance your cake with:
• Edible lace (copy the pattern of the lace on your gown for a subtle unifying touch!)
• Rosettes
• Sugar (or real) flowers
• Ruffles
• Edible glitter
Photo by Val & Jenn Photography.
beyond cake:
Maybe you’re just not cake folks, or maybe you’d rather invest those funds in a diverse array of tasty desserts instead of, or in addition to, the main attraction.

cake alternatives can be displayed in tiers like a cake, offering an attention-getting centerpiece with no cutting required:
• Cake pops
• Cake push pop tree
• Doughnuts in tiers
• Fruit tarts
• Cupcakes

dessert table tips: Choose a pretty but simple table covering. A dessert stand can be almost anything with a pretty fabric over it! A backdrop for your dessert table can display your wedding logo or any design you prefer; however, pretty desserts should steal the show. Simplicity is your friend!
A dessert table should have an abundant, glorious look. Fill your table well: arrange the desserts in varied patterns and at various heights. Whether or not you center your display around a cake, a tiered display will show your assortment of treats to the best advantage.
other yummies can be arrayed on a tiered table:
• Fruit parfaits
• S’mores
• Macarons
• Brownies
• Cookies
• Chocolate-dipped fruits
• Pastries
for your sugar-free guests: Consider a fruit station! Few things are lovelier than fruits and berries.
Add yogurt and guests can build their own healthy sweet treats.

Making Your Dream Wedding Come True
by anne pyburn craig
Great wedding planners take half-formed dreams and turn them into smooth, sweet reality.
Wedding coordination is a job that requires the organizational abilities of a general, the empathy of a therapist, and a designer’s eye for beauty.
“You have to have a strong sense of when to listen and when to lead,” says Bethany Pickard of Modern Kicks Event Planning. “There might be things I think are important that aren’t important to you, or vice versa. So I need to listen for your priorities, avoid bossing you around in that department, while using my experience to make sure you understand the practical side of your choices.”
Great wedding planners thrive on challenge. They know how to drill down to the details of making magic look easy. “It’s a toss-up between having a hot air balloon and having
fire performers at a wedding,” says Cathy Ballone of Cathy’s Elegant Events, when asked for some of her more exacting tricks. “We work primarily in barns, warehouses, historic sites, and so on. Non-traditional places. Organizing extraordinary activities requires locating the right, fully-insured, experienced people; there are permits that need to be filed, safety procedures organized.... We simply hear what the couple would like to do and then find out what steps need to be taken to make it happen!”
Great wedding planners are cool under pressure. Jeanne Stark of Hudson Valley Ceremonies will never forget the freak snowstorm of October 2011, when the white stuff started pounding Westchester at six inches an hour. “I looked at the limo driver

and said, ‘We aren’t going to make it to the church, are we?’ He shook his head no. I told him to get us back to the hotel. I called the buses with the guests and made them turn around. I called Brendan, the groom, and told him to start walking downhill to the train station. He got on Metro-North. The DoubleTree Hotel converted a room for the ceremony
and I recruited an uncle who was a retired pastor. We created a ceremony in 15 minutes. Had one of the in-laws have the Tarrytown Police pick up the groom and groomsmen at the train station in a paddy wagon... Kathleen walked down the aisle and everyone clapped and cheered. It was beautiful. After that moment everything went perfectly.”
“It’s the perfect place for a low-key wedding brimming with rustic charm.” - Lydia Castiglia, speaking about the Hudson Valley
Good wedding planners are event artists. “I really love out-of-the-box,” says Gina Maloney of Gina Maloney Events. “I’m not a traditionalist—I love different, creative, natural elements in tablescapes or unexpected places.” For a recent Woodstock wedding, Maloney brought in seven huge inflatables including “a mushroom-shaped bouncy house, and a hot air balloon. I’m working with a couple right now on a wedding with a petting zoo.”
“I’m always looking for that couple who want a non-traditional venue where we can work together, get creative to incorporate trendy, hip, heartfelt, personalized, unique touches to their big day!” says Bianca Hendricks of RSVP (Ravishing Sophisticated Visionary Planning) by B, a specialist in day-of coordination. “I’m always trying to think outside of the box for that customized wow factor.”
Good wedding planners know the venues.
“The key to a great destination wedding is a relaxed vibe and a place where family and friends can gather, a place not limited to a five-hour reception time restraint,” says Lydia Castiglia of Catskill Weddings Event Planners. “This area offers so many amazing venues where you can extend the day with late-night bonfires and after-parties, or make a weekend of it with rehearsal/welcome get-togethers and Sunday brunches. It’s the perfect place for a low-key wedding brimming with rustic charm.”
“It’s a blank canvas,” says Monica Relyea of Monica Relyea Events. “River banks, mountain tops, farms, wineries! I had clients who had an incredible manicured property with killer views of the Hudson River. The best view of the Hudson River was from their in-ground pool and you certainly can’t ask 300 guests to stand around a pool. So we brought in a company that trellised over the pool, installed a wooden floor, added carpet for secure footing and then tented over it for shade. We used this space for the ceremony and then turned it over to a dance party with a full band!”

tips from the greats
what’s the one thing you find couples often forget?
monica: Think inward, not out. We all get caught up in the details, and at times it gets stressful. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, let’s find a way to resolve that. The last thing you want is to be so stressed you lose sight of what the day is all about. You’re about to marry the one you love, witnessed and surrounded by your family and closest friends. There is nothing more beautiful, and this is what I try to remind my couples.
lydia: Whether it’s choosing your dress, experiencing your tasting, saying your vows, or actually truly participating in your day, it’s easy to get caught up in minutiae. I remind them that it is all just window dressing. You are committing to the person you love most, so savor every moment. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience that passes all too quickly!
cathy: Little items that will make them more comfortable in their environment. A bride may want to consider having a shawl available if they are having a late-fall wedding, or a small ice pack if their wedding is in July. I always take care to remind people of these types of details, and more often than not I am told that they would not have thought of it if I hadn’t brought it to their attention.
bianca: To eat! Between the excitement of getting ready, walking down the aisle, and mingling with their guests, they sometimes forget to eat!
jeanne: To put extra time into their timeline for the day. I call it buffering. I know it doesn’t take 30 minutes to get dressed, but always have it down for 30 minutes. Having this extra time here and there on the day of the wedding is so relaxing, and creating a timeline with buffer so that you can relax and enjoy the day is something that many couples forget.
gina: It’s the little practical things. If you’re not in a standard venue, have you thought of porta-potties, does every guest have transportation? Hashing all the practicalities out is essential.
bethany: The time it takes to do things. There are so many elements that go into a wedding day that people don’t think of, say, the time it takes to load a bus or enter a venue and get settled. Everyone is excited and distracted, and everything takes a lot longer. Be realistic about your timeline.

Say it all with flowers! In their infinite variety of shapes, colors, and aromas, flowers add a grace note of love and happiness wherever they’re placed. Flowers can be carried or worn by the wedding party in myriad, beautiful ways, but don’t stop there!
Floral garlands are ancient symbols of joy and fertility. Wind garlands around a chuppah or arbor to be surrounded and framed by their beauty during a ceremony. Use them to decorate banisters, pillars, tent poles or any other structural element you fancy fancying up.
Wrap a chandelier. Accent a pretty piece of furnitureor make a plain one pretty!

Your choice of flowers can be as intricate or simple as you like, from the lush sexiness of tulips to the intricate fragility of baby’s breath and beyond. Set them anywhere. Use them to create a spectacular look on vertical design elements, with or without a matching or contrasting garland. How about a petite nosegay for each guest?
Floral accents for the dessert table? Oh yes... consider the possibilities of edible blooms decorating the desserts themselves!
An oldie-but-goodie: a kissing knot fashioned of interwoven roses and rosemary suspended above you at the reception table, thought to ensure happiness and great love.

A Look for Each Season

Plunging necklines, open backs, bare shoulders... spring is the time to wear a dramatic cut to match the new life that is emerging this season! Greenery and pastels abound to offset light and shimmery fabrics such as lace, crepe, and chiffon. Colorful flowers and simple jewelry will complement beautifully.

summer
The warm summer months call for a look that’s natural and effortless. Light and flowing textures that breathe, surrounded by beautiful flowers and a touch of sunkissed skin. Simple elegance is all you need to bask in the love and warmth around you!

fall
A little drama adds to the majestic transformation that takes place in the fall—beautiful silks and lace fabrics, ruffled skirts, a wrap for the cool fall breezes. Off-white and light beige fabrics highlight the beauty of the deep-hued flowers and foliage. Finish with an autumn floral crown or birdcage veil for added style.

The most formal of all wedding seasons, think bold in terms of accessorizing and floral color to contrast the white of your dress and backdrop of the season. Weighted textures and statement jewelry to bring out the sparkle of the season. There’s no better time to throw a fur or faux fur wrap around your shoulders!

You’ve been busy creating the design details, planning the guest list, and getting your body ready for that bridal dream dress. Leading up to the special day can get chaotic, and the first
place stress shows up is on the skin. Give yourself a head start by creating a skincare plan to get any major issues under control and show off your gorgeous inner and outer glow!

here are five tips to prep your skin for your wedding day: create a skincare plan turn your shower into a spa sanctuary 1 2
Schedule monthly facials, alternating between peels, microdermabrasion, and general maintenance to eliminate problematic acne, dry skin, and dead-cell buildup that can block skin’s radiance. Planning ahead allows you and your esthetician to get to know your skin well in advance and to create a holistic beauty plan together.
If a series of professional facials isn’t in the cards, you can try regular DIY 5-minute facials in the shower. Massage a serum onto moist skin and layer a mask over it, leaving on for up to five minutes. For an organic DIY facial, try Savor Beauty’s Raspberry Serum and the Manuka Honey Detox Masque. The steam melts the honey into your skin, which keeps the complexion clear and silky smooth.

listen to your skin
Just like your diet, your skin has different cravings in the mornings and evenings. Mornings should include a brightening serum and moisturizer that address skin issues you’re most concerned about, such as breakouts or uneven skin tone.
Never leave home without applying sunscreen, like Coola Organic Suncare, which will protect skin without
If you don’t get regular facials and want a last-minute radiance boost, book a light facial at least 14 days prior. It could potentially result in breakouts due to the skin-purging toxins, so give yourself plenty of time leading up to your big day. 4 3
clogging pores. In the evenings, your skin needs more nourishment after removing the day’s dirt and grime. Massage a gentle exfoliating cleanser in circular motions against the baby hair growth on your face to deeply cleanse pores. Mist face with a skin-perfecting toner, and layer a beauty oil and hydrating moisturizer for velvet-soft skin.
Nothing says “I do” like bright shining eyes! The best pick-me-up on your wedding eve is to brew some organic chamomile tea and then chill it in the fridge. Take cotton rounds, dip into tea, wring out and
place onto eyes for up to 10 minutes. The antioxidants will reduce dark circles and brighten the eye zone. Dot the eye zone area afterward with an eye serum and cream to revive and rejuvenate.
eat your beauty
On the weekends, make your own skin-loving smoothie and use the leftovers as a DIY mask! Here’s an easy recipe:
• 1 beet, peeled and quartered
• 1 cup organic raspberries
• 1 inch fresh ginger
• 1 beet leaf
• 1 green apple
• 2 cups almond milk
• coconut nectar to taste
• Throw into a blender and savor!
beet raspberry skin rejuvenation diy mask
Add 1 tablespoon of leftover smoothie into a small bowl and 1 teaspoon of Savor Beauty Manuka Honey Masque to thicken consistency and add skin-clarifying benefits. Apply mask onto skin, leaving on for 5-10 minutes. Remove with a warm washcloth and seal in the benefits with your moisturizer of choice.

Don’t feel tied down to diamonds when you tie the knot. There’s a stone and metal out there for everyone.
For a modern look, newlyweds can try chic, slim wedding bands made from fun materials like wood, mother of pearl, or even antler.

No newlywed can go wrong with a metal band in gold, palladium, or platinum; go for a hammered or textured satin finish on your ring for a hip, unique spin on a classic. If you still have diamonds on the mind, ask your jeweler to add a few ethically-sourced gems to an otherwise delicate band.
Not a fan of glitz and glamour?
Channel your would-be jewelry funds toward something else, like a luxury honeymoon or fabulous photographer from out of town.
Not sure how to adorn yourself on your special day? Brides-to-be can accessorize with subtle hints of sparkle. Don’t let your jewelry detract from your dress. Choose a piece or two of bijoux that goes with your theme and, of course, your attire . Simple stud earrings and a delicate chain necklace pair well with more elaborate dresses. On the flip side, brides sporting simple, pared-down gowns can experiment with statement earrings or necklaces.

The traditional three-piece suit is a great choice for a dapper and sophisticated look in the spring. The vest beneath the jacket adds style and depth for those still somewhat chilly and breezy days. The look is smart, yet not overly formal, which lends itself well to a wedding in an outdoor setting. A tweed suit adds professorial charm and some texture to complement both bold- and soft-colored accessories.
Pastels are an alternative for the spring to match the colorful backdrop of trees and bulbs in full bloom. Maybe you’re choosing a cream jacket and pant with a soft pink shirt, or going for an edgy look with a deep navy or midnight blue suit, pastel shirt and dark accessories—tie, pocket square, socks. There’s no end to how far a suit can go with the right accessories to capture the look of the day.

Carefree, wispy, and natural will always be in style for a summer bride. This look is an obvious winner with a throwback Catskills wedding. Men should follow suit by choosing a neutral jacket and pant for the summer wedding—charcoal or dirt brown work well—and pairing them with a floral pattern vest, dress shirt, or tie. Be as colorful as you can with the pairing. Don’t be afraid to go off-color for shoes (olive, burgundy).
And only a few of you can work the Panama hat. Be careful with it, but if you’re doing it, make it yours. Go with color over straight brown or navy. Men who want a quieter look should opt for Oxford shirts that let the day breathe.
Inject character through color. The Oxford shirt, dark navy pant, and casual blazer is a good summer look.

Whites and metallics will start to dominate in the fall, when the real color will be all around you, especially in the Hudson Valley; so, men should embrace whites and grays, but keep it simple. If you’re doing a white jacket and pant, add gray to the palette to break up the monotony. And if you’re going gray with the jacket and pant, add either white or black.
The lapel pin is a big deal in men’s wedding wear. Make that your metallic jumpoff. Or wear a gold watch, maybe a shiny belt. Don’t call too much attention to yourself, but be sure to put some metal into your look. The key to these fall weddings will be personalization.

Winter weddings typically become more formal, and it’s the one season where the tuxedo always shines. Since whites and metallics are in, embrace the traditional black tux but add some metallic flair—again, think of the lapel pin, maybe the cuff links and shirt buttons.
For something less traditional, be daring with an off-white jacket and pant combo. Beige or charcoal, anyone? Pair that with simple whites and a dash of metal in the lapel pin, belt, or cuff links.

Your wedding is a day you’ll always want to remember, so focus on capturing your ceremony and reception from every possible angle. don’t be afraid to speak up:
Browse potential photographers’ Instagram pages or online portfolios. Choose a photographer or videographer whose expertise and style fits your theme and budget.
If your time frame and budget allow for it, think about a formal engagement photo shoot. Elegant, professional photos of you and your spouse-to-be will make the perfect addition to your wedding website, invitations, or thank-yous.
Talk to your photographer about what your expectations are in terms of quantity and quality for the day-of documentation. Request a variety of photos ahead of time, including formal and candid snapshots of your wedding party and guests. Be sure to ask for a few shots of the happy bride and groom before and after the ceremony.
Questions For Your photographer:

• How many photographers will be on the ground during the event?
• How many hours of photography services are included in my wedding photography package?
• How many edited images will I receive from the event?
• Is any video footage included in the package?
• How soon will I receive the images?
• Will I receive digital copies of the images, prints, or both?

don’t forget your surroundings:
Make sure your photography team captures your venue and decorations. For a fun, quirky addition to your reception, consider renting a photobooth. Guests will love walking away with photo strips of their own and you can keep copies of these candid shots, too.
Use social media to your advantage: Play around with cute hashtags for your wedding guests to use on Instagram and Twitter so everyone can take part in documenting your special day!
Try live streaming your ceremony on streaming services like YouTube or Facebook to keep faraway friends and family in the loop during the celebration.

to spice up your ceremony
by anne pyburn craig

spice up your ceremony with a unity tradition. Flavors come from all over the world, sharing the universal theme: Two lives becoming one, forever changed into something new, strong, and beautiful. Pick one, adapt one, or get inspired to invent your own!
time-honored traditions from around the world:
Bow to your ancestors, your parents, your guests, and, finally, each other China
Light a unity candle together United States
Exchange floral garlands India
Bind your wrists together with ribbon or cord Celtic
Break a wineglass underfoot Jewish
Get Henna tattoos India
Bind your little fingers together with the “red thread of fate” Japan
two lives becoming one, forever changed into something new, strong, and beautiful.
blending two families? Speak vows to your own and each other’s children. Kids can also help light a family candle, take turns ringing a peace bell, or share in a ceremonial nibble or sip from a family goblet.

• Place a bottle of wine that will age well in a time capsule, with love letters to each other. (Tastier than year-old wedding cake?)
• Ring a peace bell, which you can then display at home and ring as needed.
• Feed each other fine chocolates.
• Tie a fisherman’s knot together—it grows stronger under stress.
• Pour wine from two decanters into a single glass to sip.
• Pour two different colors of sand or water into a single vase.
• Pass your rings around so that each guest can hold them for a moment and pray, meditate, or wish you well.
• Have a bowl of pebbles or beads at the doorway and have each guest hold one during the ceremony.

We’re not trying to tell you what to do here, but even in our electronic age, you can’t go wrong with a good quality cardstock and paper for your wedding correspondence.
BY ANNE PYBURN CRAIG
Paper feels special. It adds elegance and flair, makes a dandy keepsake, and rules out any possibility of inconveniencing or scandalizing the more traditional guests. Your best allies in this process: a good print shop/ stationer and a talented graphic designer. Whichever one you find first, you’ll want to work with someone
who has wedding experience—ask to see a portfolio and make sure they’re versed in the importance of the correct timeline and the finer details of wedding-correspondence etiquette. Your designer may be able to lead you to a good print shop—or the other way around, as these professionals often work together.

• Use a logo or insignia that you both love on all wedding correspondence: save the date cards, invitations, RSVP cards, maps, programs, place cards, menus, thank you notes. It can be as simple as your initials entwined, but it will add a sleek, unified feel and help guests keep everything together at a glance.
• If you’re doing a website, include the URL on all correspondence.
• Eco-conscious? Save some trees with recycled paper. Create some new flora with the seed-infused type that can be planted.
• Engagement announcements: As soon as you’re sure! (If you’ve chosen a date, these can double as save the date cards.)
• Save the date cards: As soon as your guest list is finalized. If you’re planning a destination wedding, send these out several months in advance.
• Invitations and RSVP cards: Three months in advance if travel is involved; at least six to eight weeks for a wedding that’s closer to home. Don’t forget to request that RSVPs be returned at least a week or two before you need to finalize numbers with your caterer!
• Maps and schedules: Can be included with your invitations or posted on your website.
• Wedding announcements: Send out the day of the wedding or the day after.
• Thank you notes: Should be sent within two to three weeks after you return from the honeymoon. (Including a fun photo is a nice touch.)
Must all singles get a plus-one? It’s a nice touch, but if budget, space, or other considerations make it impractical, consider seating all singles together at the reception.

No kids? Phrase it as “Adults only” rather than “No children.” Better yet, call your friends with kids and discuss it personally.
Should registry information be on the invitation? No. Save any reference to registries for your website and/or to share with friends who inquire.

Dress code? Phrases such as “Black tie, please” or “Dress for comfort” are helpful. Beyond that, no matter what your fantasy may be, leave the couture choices up to the guests.

Weddings entail plenty of gift-giving all around—from the guests to the couple, and from the couple to their wedding party, their parents, their guests and often their kids and even each other. Where to begin?
BY BIBI FARBER
from the guests:
So you’ve been invited to the wedding—time to select a gift! Whether you plan to attend or not, it’s time to find a wedding present the newlyweds will appreciate.

T he average price of feeding a wedding guest is $85 per plate. If you’re attending a sit-down dinner with cocktails at a hotel or country club, you can be sure it runs between $125 and $350 per person. Some use this as a yardstick to calculate the value of their gift, but you can spend what you think is appropriate to your relationship to the couple. Somewhere between $100 and $300 per person attending is usually about right.
If you’re attending the engagement party, the bridal shower, and the wedding, you might want to break down the total cost of how much you want to spend: 20% each for the first two gifts and 60% for the wedding gift.
The registry is the obvious place to start. Most brides have one and it is a surefire way to get them something they want and avoid giving the same gift that someone else does. Money is a perfect option as well—cash or checks will be most happily accepted!
Honeymoon registries are increasingly popular. Here, too, you can improvise something unexpected and pre-pay for an amazing experience in the area they might not have planned. Find out the most interesting attractions and line up a few sure-to-be appreciated gift certificates. Think of fun and romantic adventures like a cruise, a chartered excursion to a special destination, or a hot air balloon ride!
by
Go in on a gift with other guests, increasing the money available so the couple may get the whole set of china, linens, silverware or any larger items on the registry.
If there is a bridal shower, this is the perfect time to bring a gift, coupled with a cash gift at the wedding itself. Guests can purchase a gift from the registry any time before the wedding day, and then bring a card to the reception. If you haven’t done this beforehand, you’ll want to be sure to send a gift within three months of the wedding date with a card to let the couple know that it’s on the way.

Off registry: Is there a certain performer they love who may be appearing in the area? Get them tickets and a gift certificate to the nearest fabulous restaurant.
It’s an optional tradition, and certainly a sweet sentiment. The couple may choose to exchange gifts the night before or during the wedding, and may make use of their assistants if this is done before the ceremony.
The groom often buys the bride a piece of jewelry or something that she can wear at the wedding. Something with a bit of sparkle—a pair of earrings or a necklace.

A pocket watch or a nice new pair of cufflinks; liquor and engraved glasses; or, for a sensual and timeless gift he is sure to appreciate, framed shots from a boudoir photo shoot.
for the bridesmaids & maid of honor:
• Jewelry is always a favorite. Go with something that is personal, unique and versatile from a local jewelry designer. It doesn’t have to be the same for each bridesmaid
• Gift certificate to a spa or restaurant
• Dancing lessons
• A French press and coffee
• Local handmade chocolates
for the groomsmen and best man:
• A minibar in a unique or personalized box
• Engraved cufflinks
• A gift certificate to a movie theater, music venue, or sporting event
• A craft beer cooler
• A personalized beer stein
• Games or toys to entertain them while the grown-ups are celebrating Samantha Lauren Photographie.
flower girl or ring bearer:
• A personalized candy jar
wedding party favors:
• Locally produced natural soaps, lotions, bath salts and handcrafted lip balms
• Soy wax candles burn longer than regular paraffin candles and are cheaper than beeswax
• Consider customizing seed packets or cards printed on seed paper, with flowers and vegetables that will bloom and provide a living reminder of the wedding.
• There is no shortage of locally produced edible gifts that can be elegantly presented and enjoyed later. Cookies, mini pies, tarts, fruit, and herbal tea are easy to source. Also consider personalized little jars of raw honey, preserves, jams and maple syrup.
for the parents:
• A bottle of local wine with a custom engraved wine box or set of wine glasses
• Picture frames with a personalized message
• A personalized family tree pillow
• A real tree they can plant at home
• A weekend getaway
• Commission a local artist, glass blower, or potter to design the perfect custom gift

Is there anyone else who helped make it all come together? Perhaps a friend will be singing at the wedding or a relative who is exceptionally helpful and involved? A personal letter of thanks and a small gift basket is a beautiful gesture to show your appreciation.

ceremony: Whether live or recorded, filling your venue with music as guests arrive and sit down is a wonderful thing. Consider harp, flute, violin, chamber music, a vocalist, or classical guitar—sweet background music that allows comfortable conversation and sets a thoughtful mood. And don’t be afraid to choose your favorites for the processional and recessional.
cocktail hour and dinner: Make sure the music doesn’t overwhelm conversation. If your budget allows, a live jazz trio or chamber quartet is lovely.
after dinner: Everybody dance now! Whether you’re hiring a live band or a DJ, check references.
music checklist:
Is your bandleader or DJ also the master of ceremonies, or will someone else take on all or part of that role?
Can you see a video of an earlier gig to make sure your DJ or band has the right stuff?
be sure to discuss with the dj or band:
• Songs you must have
• Songs you must NOT have
• Timing and music choices for any reception rituals such as first dance, toasts, cake cutting, and bouquet toss

Rehearsal Dinners, After Parties, & Weekend Adventures
by anne pyburn craig
Why confine yourself to a few hours of formal fun? During the actual ceremony, and even the reception, you’ll be as busy as an autumn squirrel.
Stretch the fun with an extended wedding and have some time to catch up and bond. Possibilities abound! Some popular ones: after-party:
rehearsal dinner:
An opportunity to bond with the most important people in your lives, even if they are not involved with the rehearsal. Incorporate each family’s background into the menu, music, or decor. Tell the story of your first meeting. Read a joint love letter to your loved ones. Icebreakers can be as simple as having everyone give a toast or as elaborate as you want to make them: Word games? Karaoke?

For those who never want the night to end! Add a handwritten note to your invitation for those included. Change into something comfy. Reserve space at a pool hall or bowling alley. Have a pub crawl. Rent a disco ball. Get a large canvas and a bunch of markers for guests to get artistic. The rules are: There are no rules.
weekend fun bonus: Camping? Swimming at a local water hole? Hike and picnic? River cruise? Horseback riding? Sculpture park? Lucky you, marrying in the Hudson Valley with so many great possibilities!
morning-after brunch:
Should be easy and fun, demanding nothing of guests (or you) and giving plenty. Recruit a trusted friend, relative, or wedding party attendant to help with organizing and preparation. Not too early please!
some ideas:
• Espresso machine, mimosas or Bloody Marys, and fruit-infused water
• Buffet with fruit, granola, and heavier choices like waffles, eggs, and bacon
• Slideshow of wedding and reception shots
• Brief thank-you-and-farewell speech

staying organized with a
by
Planning a wedding is a huge task, and can often lead to high levels of stress and anxiety. But if you strategize correctly, you can ultimately avoid getting frazzled. The key to stress-free wedding planning is staying organized,
and the easiest way to do this is to create a checklist, complete with a timeline. To get you started, here is a straightforward and easy-to-follow checklist, based on Real Simple’s “Ultimate Wedding Planning Checklist.”
9–16 months prior to your ideal wedding date/season

Begin a wedding-themed Pinterest board, binder, folder, etc. to collect all your wedding day ideas
Choose your wedding party with your fiancé
Decide on a budget. This will inform many of your decisions for planning your big day
Create your guest list—size will be based largely on your budget
Decide on a date and venue
If necessary, hire a planner to help with much of the work on this list!
Choose an officiant (religious, non-religious, etc.)
Begin researching vendors (i.e., caterers, florists, photographers, etc.)
If desired, have an engagement party
8 months prior
Book your entertainment (band, dj, string quartet, etc.)
Hire your photographer/videographer
Find and purchase your dress
Meet with and book a caterer
Create a registry
Reserve hotel rooms for out-of-town guests
Create a wedding website (and include the URL on your invitations)
6–7 months prior
Design and purchase invitations
Choose dresses and suits for your wedding party and let them know where they can be purchased or rented
Meet with your chosen officiant to discuss what you would like to include in your ceremony
Create and send save the date cards (a good idea for guests who will be traveling)
