Wild & Old Florida

@pelicanislandaudubon_society

@floridacrackerairboatrides

Start early with an airboat adventure in Fellsmere. Glide through the wetlands of the Blue Cypress area and experience a wilder side of Indian River County. Keep your eyes open for alligators, wading birds and other native wildlife as you explore the marshes. Airboat tours typically last around an hour, making this an exciting way to start the day without taking over your entire morning. Slow down with a late breakfast at C.J. Cannon's. After your airboat ride, settle in for a relaxed meal at this longtime Vero Beach establishment, where you can enjoy breakfast while watching planes take off and land at the airport. Take the scenic route along the Historic Jungle Trail. Later, head back toward the coast and wind your way along this nearly eight-mile historic road. Beneath the canopy of live oaks and alongside the Indian River Lagoon, the drive feels like a glimpse into Old Florida.

@floridacrackerairboatrides

@c.j.cannons

Explore Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge. Take your time on the trails and boardwalks, looking for pelicans, ospreys, egrets and other wildlife in the protected coastal habitat. The refuge's trails offer easy walks, so there's no need to turn the afternoon into a hike. Choose your evening. Keep dinner casual at Tradewinds 41 or stop by Kilted Mermaid for a drink and a bite.

@ellie.kamaris

@riversidetheatrefl

Spend the afternoon at the Vero Beach Museum of Art. Take your time exploring the galleries, then enjoy a stroll around Riverside Park and the surrounding area. Or, make the lagoon your afternoon adventure. If you'd rather spend more time outdoors, swap the museum for a kayak, paddleboard, jet ski or guided boat tour on the Indian River Lagoon. Guided eco-tours offer opportunities to look for dolphins, manatees and the many birds that inhabit the lagoon.

@paddlesbythesea

@whitetreeofblues

End the day at Hogan Yards. Grab dinner, a drink or something sweet and enjoy the lively atmosphere of this local gathering place. If you choose the lagoon adventure instead of the museum, you can always save the museum for a rainy-day stop or another trip.

OUTDOORS

Every summer, the nonprofit Coastal Connections offers guided, permitted Turtle Walks at night and Turtle Digs during the day, giving you a rare chance to witness these ancient mariners up close. For dates and details, visit their website or follow them on social media. www.Coastal-Connections.org

Sustainable Travel in Indian River County Protecting our natural beauty, especially our sea turtle nesting beaches, depends on all of us. When you visit, you’ll find easy and meaningful ways to help keep Indian River County pristine for generations to come. Here are a few ways you can join in:

Beach Baskets Look for free Beach Baskets at many of our public beach access points. Pick one up while enjoying the sun and sand, collect any debris you see, and help leave the beach even cleaner than you found it.

Coastal Cleanups

Want to make an even bigger impact? Join a Coastal Cleanup during your visit! These events bring the community together to remove debris from beaches, lagoon-front parks, and walkways. It’s a hands-on way to give back to the place you came to enjoy.

Fishing Line Recycling Anglers can help protect sea turtles, manatees, and other wildlife by using the colorful monofilament recycling tubes located at beach accesses, piers, jetties, and boat ramps. Place used fishing line and tackle inside so it can be safely recycled and kept out of the water.

Wrap Recycling @coastalconnections_inc

Keep your sustainability efforts going beyond the beach by recycling plastic bags and wraps through local WRAP (Wrap Recycling Action Program) collection sites. Look for the Vero Goes Zero sticker at participating businesses, and while you’re there, shop local and support the businesses helping keep these materials out of our waterways and oceans.
