At the Everson Museum of Art , visitors encounter American art inside the iconic building, designed by I. M. Pei, which stands as a masterpiece of modern architecture.

Looking for an impressive performance? See a show at one of our many theaters. The iconic Landmark Theatre , open since 1928 in downtown Syracuse, offers a Broadway experience where audiences are wowed each season. Alternatively, Syracuse Stage presents independent plays and performances.

There’s not a bad seat at the Redhouse Arts Center, a premier venue known for high-quality performances in an intimate setting. Check out a comedy show or musical at the Oncenter Crouse Hinds Theater , including performances from

the Syracuse Orchestra , one of the only musician-led cooperative orchestras in the United States.

History is preserved and shared across the county’s cultural institutions. The Onondaga Historical Association located on Montgomery Street connects past and present through rotating exhibits that explore local industry, innovation, and daily life.

Housed in the country’s only remaining weighlock building, the Erie Canal Museum invites guests to discover how the canal shaped commerce and connection across New York State in the 1800s. The story of this land and region stretches far beyond the canal era. At the Skä•noñh Great Law of Peace Center, interactive exhibits honor the living traditions of the Haudenosaunee and the enduring principles of the Great Law of Peace.

The Matilda Joslyn Gage Center in Fayetteville asks visitors to explore the legacy of one of the nation’s leading suffragists and abolitionists,

offering insight into the fight for women’s rights.

Nearby, downtown and neighboring streets double as open-air galleries where murals and public sculptures transform brick walls and city corners into living canvases for locals and visitors to discover and engage with.

Armory Square offers an entire interactive wall designed for fun and shared moments. Basketball fans can also check out Chris Murray’s tribute to iconic Syracuse University coach Jim Boeheim, located off W. Fayette Street.

Skip over to the Westcott neighborhood , a vibrant and eclectic community with live music, great food, even better coffee, and some of the city’s most colorful mosaics, along with the late Michael Murray’s playful and upbeat murals.

In June, one of the region’s most unique sporting spectacles arrives each summer with the Vintage Race Boat Regatta on Onondaga Lake. Syracuse turns up the volume with unforgettable live music experiences. Each summer, the Empower FCU Amphitheater at Lakeview comes alive with charttopping artists and highenergy performances set against the scenic backdrop of Onondaga Lake.

For an iconic indoor concert experience, the historic Landmark Theatre blends elegant architecture with world-class acoustics in the heart of downtown. Festivals with National Headliners

Festival season brings even more ways to celebrate music in Syracuse. The two-day Syracuse Food Truck Battle has featured headliners like Mayday Parade and The Maine. Taste of Syracuse in June adds live performances to its culinary festivities, with past acts including Hanson, and Spin Doctors. The Syracuse International Jazz Fest, one of the longest-running jazz festivals in the country, is celebrating 40 years this year and the New York State Blues Festival, one of the largest in the Northeast, draw nationally recognized artists for multi-day celebrations of sound. Exploring Syracuse doesn’t have to come with a high price tag. From scenic parks and vibrant festivals to accessible museums and family-friendly attractions, there are plenty of ways to experience the city for free or close to it.

Onondaga Lake Park

Often called the “ Central Park of Central New York ,” Onondaga Lake Park offers miles of shoreline, green space, and year-round recreation. The 12-mile Loop the Lake Trail connects some of the area’s most scenic spots, stretching from the Salt Museum past the marina and Willow Bay, along the West Shore Trail , through the Empower FCU Amphitheater at Lakeview grounds, and toward Murphy’s Island Trail .

Along the way, stop to admire the Butterfly Garden of HOPE , maintained by HOPE for Bereaved, or take advantage of the park’s many activity areas, including a skate park, pickleball courts, and playgrounds. Outdoor enthusiasts can try archery, bocce, canoeing, kayaking,

fishing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and more.

Families will appreciate the thoughtfully designed Wegmans Playground at the southern entrance, featuring a 70 percent wheelchairaccessible experience.

City Parks

Within the city limits, Syracuse offers several parks with peaceful escapes and scenic views.

Thornden Park , a 76acre green space in the Syracuse University/Westcott neighborhood, is home to the beloved E.M. Mills Rose Garden . During the summer months, vibrant blooms frame walkways and benches. Visitors can catch one of several performances of Shakespeare in the Park at the open-air amphitheater.

Upper Onondaga Park spans 67-acres in the Strathmore neighborhood. The park features Hiawatha Lake, tennis and pickleball courts, basketball courts, and a playground. Its waterfront gazebo and willow-lined stone bridge create a

picturesque setting that feels like a hidden gem. From the park’s highest point, visitors can even take in views of the Syracuse skyline.

Nearby, Webster Pond offers a quiet retreat operated by the Anglers Association and maintained by dedicated volunteers. Fully accessible walking trails circle the pond, making it an inviting place for a stroll, picnic, or peaceful afternoon by the water. Kids of all ages will enjoy feeding the ducks that reside there.

Area Parks

Baltimore Woods Nature Center in Marcellus offers complimentary parking and a 270-acre preserve with more than six miles of hiking trails, open daily from dawn to dusk.

From Memorial Day to Labor Day, five dollars per car gives visitors access to Clark Reservation State Park. Adventurers will discover a massive glacial plunge basin formed by ice age waterfalls. It’s one of the best examples of this kind of geology in North America.

Museums & Attractions

For art lovers, the Everson Museum of Art offers paywhat-you-wish admission on Wednesdays from 11 am to 5 pm and Thursdays from 5 to 8 pm. Inside, explore rotating exhibitions and the nation’s largest collection of American ceramics.

In spring, step outside to see the Tree of 40 Fruit on Syracuse University’s campus where it blossoms into more than 40 varieties of stone fruit. A second tree can also be found outside the Everson Museum of Art

Located in the last remaining weighlock, the Erie Canal Museum also offers paywhat-you-can admission (with a suggested $12 donation). , the museum invites visitors to explore interactive exhibits and step aboard a replica canal boat.

Animal lovers can visit the Rosamond Gifford Zoo yearround at affordable prices. Regular season admission is $9 for adults and $5 for youth and seniors. Winter discount days in January and February offer up to 50 percent off. Children under two, U.S. veterans, and active military members receive free admission all year.

History

Discover Syracuse at your own pace through trails that highlight the city’s rich history and vibrant local culture. The Downtown Syracuse Historic Walking Tour showcases the city’s historical and significant locations throughout the downtown area, while the Guide to Public Art highlights architecturally important buildings and monuments as well as street art. Both are self-guided and start at the heart of downtown, Clinton Square. Wind your way through districts like Hanover Square pausing to admire carved figures and intricate architecture alongside some of the city’s oldest buildings, many of which are designated on the National Register of Historic Places.

Home to the largest domed stadium on a college campus in the United States, Syracuse University’s JMA Wireless Dome has been a landmark since 1980. Basketball as we know it was transformed right here in 1954, when Syracuse Nationals owner Danny Biasone invented the 24-second shot clock. Acres of Apples

Onondaga County is at the heart of New York’s apple country . Our region is known for contributing over 29 million bushels of apples annually statewide … if a bushel of apples is roughly 125 medium apples, that’s billions of apples we’re sharing across the region each year, which includes a variety of types such as honeycrisp, macintosh, and more. A lot of these family-run orchards can be found on scenic Route 20.

Green light…Red light

The only upside-down traffic light in the world can be found right here in Syracuse, located at the intersection of Tompkins and Milton Avenue since the 1920s. After repeated acts of defiance from local Irish stone-throwers knocked out the red light, the green sits on top as a lasting symbol of Irish pride throughout the Tipperary Hill neighborhood.
