OUR HISTORY
Where History Inspires Creativity. Stellenbosch blends old-world charm with innovation, a place where every oak-lined avenue tells a story and every corner hums with creative energy.
Founded in 1679 by Governor Simon van der Stel, this beautiful town on the banks of the Eerste River grew from a small settlement into one of South Africa’s most inspiring destinations. Long before its European discovery, the valley was home to indigenous communities who lived in rhythm with its fertile landscape.
The combination of good soil, gentle climate and natural beauty shaped a town that continues to flourish. Over three centuries, Stellenbosch has evolved into a vibrant hub of art, culture, learning and innovation.
The establishment of Stellenbosch University in 1918 anchored it as a centre of excellence and discovery, producing thought leaders, athletes and visionaries who continue to shape the country’s future.
Visitors today can wander through streets lined with beautifully preserved Cape Dutch, Georgian and Victorian buildings, browse art galleries and design studios, or relax at one of the many cafés and restaurants that spill onto sun-drenched pavements. Every element of the town invites you to slow down and savour its sense of place.
It was here in 1971 that South Africa’s very first wine route was established, creating an organised network of wineries where visitors could experience the product of the vine and tune into the soul of the region’s winelands, opening the door to immersive journeys, warm hospitality and a deeper connection with Stellenbosch’s timeless landscape.
This pioneering spirit of hospitality remains at the heart of Stellenbosch, shaping the way visitors connect with its people and its landscape.
Blending history, creativity and forward thinking, Stellenbosch continues to redefine what a winelands town can be: sophisticated, inspiring and only a short journey from the vibrant heart of Cape Town.
South Africa offers first class communication systems with direct dialling world wide. The international dialling code for South Africa is +27 and the area code for the Western Cape is 021 when dailling a landline.
CLIMATE
Stellenbosch has a Mediterranean climate with dry, sunny summers and a winter rainfall interspersed with a good proportion of beautiful sunny days.

TOURISM WITH PURPOSE
Regenerative tourism is transforming the way travellers experience Stellenbosch. It is travel that supports people, protects heritage and strengthens the communities that make this region so distinctive.
Visitors are encouraged to explore with intention and to choose experiences that create lasting benefit.
At the heart of this movement is Township and Village, a community led social enterprise that has become a national and global benchmark for responsible tourism.
It earned the Africa Responsible Tourism Gold Award in 2025, followed by a Global Silver Award after generating more than R1 million in direct income for local guides, cooks, artists and entrepreneurs.
Its success proves that responsible tourism is not a nice to have. It is a powerful economic engine that creates dignity, ownership and sustainable livelihoods.
Township and Village offers a blueprint for growth that serves everyone. From the storytellers of Kayamandi to the artisans of Ida’s Valley, the enterprise creates pathways to prosperity that honour local heritage while offering visitors meaningful, enriching experiences. This is community tourism leadership at its finest.
In Stellenbosch, regeneration is not abstract. It is lived every day through creative partnerships, authentic encounters and the belief that tourism should leave a positive legacy for all.

should feel effortless, enjoyable and full of discovery. Start by selecting a handful of farms close to each other, then book your tastings so you can simply arrive and enjoy.
Have a good breakfast, drink water throughout the day and take your time at each stop. Swirl, sip and chat to the hosts, because the stories behind the wines add richness to the experience.
Do explore different varietals, try something new and support the farms you love by purchasing a bottle. Do follow tasting room etiquette and respect your time slots.
next. Skip heavy perfume, which masks delicate aromas. And never drive after drinking. Appoint a designated driver or book a shuttle so you can relax, taste with confidence and enjoy the best of Stellenbosch.
The Stellenbosch Wine Routes is divided into 5 sub routes (Bottelary Hills, Greater Simonsberg, Helderberg, Stellenbosch Valley and Stellenbosch Berg) to make travelling along the route more user friendly. Each have their own characteristics in terms of prominent wine styles, climates and geographical location. The sub routes originate from physical location and has no relation to the Wine of Origin system or any wards within the Stellenbosch region.
The winery listings that follow indicate the sub-route they belong to.
Bottelary Hills
The Bottelary Hills Renosterveld Conservancy, home to a host of endangered fauna and flora, can be found in this area. Although the smallest in the world, the Cape Floral Kingdom, is the richest of the world’s six floral kingdoms. The mountainous terrain, good rainfall, deep welldrained soils and diversity of terroir are key contributors to making this a premium viticultural area. The area is home to popular wineries like Beyerskloof, Hartenberg, Kaapzicht and Villiera.
Helderberg
The Helderberg sub route is home to some of the oldest wine farms in South Africa. The area stretches from Somerset West to the edge of Stellenbosch and in this area lies the Golden Triangle, a top wine growing area. The cooling effect of the moisture laden sea breezes from nearby False Bay, combined with excellent soil structures, form ideal conditions for growing noble varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Shiraz, Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc. The moderating effect of the Atlantic Ocean results in cool afternoons and evenings that are ideal for growing quality grapes. This area is home
to top quality wineries like Morgenster, Rust en Vrede and Ernie Els Wines to name a few.
Stellenbosch Berg
The Stellenbosch Berg (Mountain) sub route encompasses several well-known estates and private cellars, and includes the Jonkershoek Valley. The landscape is dominated by the majestic Twin Peaks, which tower up to 1 494m high. The higher elevations and textured soils make the valley ideal for growing Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varieties. The small area between the Stellenbosch and Helderberg Mountains produces some of the very best wines in the world. You’ll find producers like Lanzerac, Kleine Zalze, Stark-Condé and Waterford Estate in this area.
Greater Simonsberg
The Greater Simonsberg sub route predominantly has south-westerly aspects and, because of altitudes commonly higher than 200m, it is generally open to the cool south-westerly summer breezes originating from False Bay, some 25km away. The wines from this area are mainly red, made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz. Wineries in this region include Delheim, Delaire Graff, Simonsig, Thelema and Warwick.
Stellenbosch Valley
The Stellenbosch Valley sub route is home to a myriad of well-known estates, private cellars, hotels and restaurants. The area was crowned South Africa’s finest winegrowing area at the Novare Terroir Wine Awards in 2012 and 2014. The area boasts southwesterly aspects and a high altitude and cool south-westerly summer breezes from the nearby False Bay. Home to Neethlingshof, Spier and Jordan.

THE PHILOSOPHY: The source of distinctive wines is quality grapes, therefore the vintner’s work begins in the vineyards. Vines vary greatly in their soil, climatic and topographical requirements and no single vineyard can satisfy the needs of all grape varieties. With this in mind, we select vineyards where individual varieties excel. Emphasis placed on caring viticultural practices by dedicated growers, together with careful winemaking, contributes to this pursuit of excellence in the art of winemaking.
