ABOUT THE ARTIST

What inspires you? Inspirations of mine include forgotten VHS relics, reality television, & the overall preservation of physical media. I am most inspired by the films and art of David Lynch, who encourages us all to “stay dreamy.” His work explores the deeper mystery of life and proves how art is a powerful tool for doing so. The idea for his film,

“ MY FAV O R I T E T H I N G ABOUT SPOKAN E IS TH E A C C E S S I B I L I T Y TO N AT U R E , W H I L E N OT B E I N G FA R F R O M D O W N TO W N . ” Blue Velvet, was inspired by a specific experience from his childhood while living in Spokane. Other inspirations include Daniel Clowes, Simon Hanselmann, Tiger Tateishi, Aphex Twin & Björk. I’m also very inspired by the Spokane community and the support we have for each other in the local art scene. Even though it’s relatively small and tight-knit, there is a powerful energy and momentum to creatives here that is so exciting to see. What do you hope people will take away from your art?

rianna Miller is a Filipina-American Illustrator & Designer based in Spokane, Washington, originally from Salem, Oregon. In 2014, she graduated from the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon, with a degree in Communication Design. In 2015, she was an Artist in Residence for TEDxSalem, where she presented a talk about the installation piece created for the event. From 2016-2017, Brianna was a PrattMWP Artist in Residence & Community Arts Instructor in Utica, NY. Soon after, she moved to Spokane and works as a freelance artist. Her work has been featured in publications including the New York Times, Vulture & Cosmopolitan. She also regularly does slipcover artwork for films released by Vinegar Syndrome. Brianna’s sketchbook work was published in a book titled Jelly World by Burn Barrel Press.

With my art, I intend to find a balance of elements from music, movies, and nostalgic cartoons. I enjoy documenting both past and present iconography and reflecting on pop culture. An overarching theme in my work has been focused on memories, consciousness and shared human experience. I believe art is a vessel for having a dialogue with the viewer, and the most rewarding aspect for me is to hear individual experiences and varied interpretations of my illustrations. I hope people resonate with the recognizable Spokane imagery and reflect on a memory associated with a certain place or time. I want the artwork to celebrate what makes it unique, special & a bit unknown. It was so much fun creating the film guide illustration, since some of my favorite films were filmed here! What's your favorite thing about Spokane? My favorite thing about Spokane is the accessibility to nature, while not being far from downtown. There are so many great parks, including People’s Park, Rimrock View Trail at the Palisades, and Bowl & Pitcher. Every year, I look forward to swimming in the river and biking the Centennial Trail. As a movie buff, the Garland Theater is one of my favorite local haunts. It is such a special piece of history, and I am thankful to have the Garland here in Spokane. I also love to thrift, and the second-hand shops here are unmatched!

oreen Hiskey’s journey to Spokane began with an unexpected online connection that blossomed into much more. Despite never having visited the U.S., and her partner never having been to India, together they took a leap of faith that led to one of Spokane’s most vibrant and exciting restaurants. Coming from a city of more than 7 million people in India, Spokane offered a change of pace, comfort, and community. Noreen quickly immersed herself in the local food scene, seeking out restaurants and like-minded food lovers. Her passion for cooking, deeply rooted in her family’s traditions, became a bridge between her heritage and her new home. Growing up, Noreen’s family lived as expats in Saudi Arabia, with her father working in Dubai. Her mother, a passionate cook, used food to build friendships and share culture. Potlucks and recipe exchanges were common, and food became the family’s love language. Noreen inherited this passion, and cooking remained a central part of her identity.

Encouraged by her husband, Noreen began a food blog from their home in Spokane. She documented recipes, photographed dishes, and shared her culinary creations online for over a decade. Her blog became a platform for storytelling, cultural exchange, and creative expression. It was also a collaborative effort—her husband ran a separate website, and they supported each other’s ventures together. Today, Noreen continues to share her love for food through Indicana, blending her Indian roots with the flavors of Mexico. Her story is one of courage, connection, and the transformative power of food. Seven years ago, the birth of her daughter marked a turning point in her creative journey. She began seeking more personal and community-driven ways to share her love of food. She found that connection through Feast World Kitchen, a nonprofit organization empowering immigrant and refugee chefs. It provides a platform for culinary entrepreneurs to host monthly pop-ups, participate in teaching and business programs, and become part of Spokane’s diverse and welcoming community. As Feast World Kitchen grew in popularity, welcoming more immigrant and refugee chefs into its fold, the need for space and flexibility led to a natural transition. Having spent four years building Inland Curry within Feast’s shared kitchen, Noreen found herself at a crossroads. That next step began with a taco.

One of Noreen’s most loyal customers, Chip Overstreet, was sent home with a sample of Indian-inspired tacos. Chip, who had become so dedicated to Noreen’s cooking that he had set himself a weekly alarm on his phone to put in his weekly order, loved the tacos. That simple gesture sparked a conversation: What if Indian food could be presented differently? What if it could be fused with Mexican cuisine? The idea resonated with Noreen. She had already experimented with Indian fusion

during her early pop-ups. Now, with Chip as her business partner, the concept of Indicana was born—a restaurant blending the bold, vibrant flavors of India and Mexico. The fusion felt natural. Both cuisines share ingredients, techniques, and histories shaped by colonization and trade. Dried chilies, tomatoes, braising methods, and complex sauces like mole and curry all reflect a shared culinary DNA.

The space they created in the Perry District, with a cozy patio backing up to Grant Park, reflects the fusion at the heart of Indicana. It’s warm, colorful, and thoughtfully designed—not traditionally Indian or Mexican but a blend of both cultures. The goal is to make diners feel excited, curious, and comfortable. Whether they’re familiar with Indian or Mexican food, they’ll find something approachable yet unique. Each dish is crafted with intention. Take their mole, for example: a traditional Mexican base reimagined with Indian chilies, cashews, and spices, or halibut with coconut rice in a chili margarita seasoning. It’s not about replicating either cuisine— it’s about honoring both and creating something entirely new. Ultimately, Indicana is more than a restaurant. It’s a celebration of culinary creativity, cultural connection, and the joy of trying something unexpected. Cindy, born and raised in Spokane, met John at WSU. She initially pursued teaching before dedicating herself to raising their three children and supporting the family business. The Bryants’ story is one of passion, perseverance, and purpose. Their brewery is more than a business— it’s a mission to elevate Spokane’s profile, foster community pride, and create something unforgettable. Through international recognition and local engagement, they continue to advocate for Spokane with heart and hustle. From day one, No-Li set its sights beyond the Pacific Northwest. One of its first medals came from Japan, and with each international award, the brewery grew—adding equipment, training staff, and refining its craft.

hirteen years ago, John and Cindy Bryant boldly decided to start their own brewery. Driven by a belief in the city’s potential and heart, they chose Spokane over plenty of other options around the Pacific Northwest. Inspired by Gonzaga University’s national success just blocks away, they envisioned a brewery that could represent Spokane on an international stage. “If Mark Few and the Gonzaga basketball program can be a top 10 team year after year, why couldn’t a brewery from Spokane be an international hub?” John asks. That question became a rallying cry for the family. John’s brewing career began at Washington State University, where he worked at The Coug in Pullman. From there, he brewed his first batch at Rainier Brewery in Seattle in 1989 and pursued a beer brewing journey that would take him all over the Western United States. Each step deepened his expertise in innovation, recipe development, branding, and leadership.

Even as the brand expanded globally, its heart remained in Spokane where they’ve created a destination unlike anything else in North America. No-Li features a a sprawling beer campus with a German-inspired Bier Hall with seating for 200+ and a familyfriendly Brewhouse that opens to a patio along the Spokane River. Spokane is now home to more than 30 breweries and the Bryant’s thrive on the spirit of competition and community that propels the thriving beer scene around the city “You want to be in a league of great teams—it makes you better,” John says, and that spirit of collaboration has helped elevate Spokane’s reputation.

EVEN AS THE BRAND EXPANDED GLOBALLY, ITS HEART REMAINED IN SPOKANE WHERE THEY’VE CREATED A DESTINATION UNLIKE ANYTHING ELSE “People start asking, ‘What the hell is going on in Spokane, Washington?’” John laughs. The brewery isn’t just a business—it’s a family. John and Cindy’s sons, Jack, and Cole each followed their own paths, leading them back to No-Li. Jack, who started building tap handles as a teenager, has worked in nearly every part of the operation at this point. “I love Spokane because it’s where my friends are, my family, the business,” he says. “You want to be part of a growing city and see it develop.”

Cole’s journey began at Gonzaga, where he immediately connected with Spokane. After a stint in Seattle, he returned to Spokane and the family business with his wife and two young sons. “Spokane’s a great place to have a family,” he says. “Cost of living’s great, lots to do outdoors— it just feels like home.” Despite the accolades and growth, humility remains a cornerstone of No-Li’s culture. “Neither Cindy nor I came from wealth,” John says. “And if I ever start feeling like we’re above something, I revisit that. It’s very humbling, and it drives you more.” No-Li’s story is one of resilience, belief, and a relentless drive to bring Spokane along for the ride. “We’ve really just gotten started,” John says. “And I think there are some beautiful breweries in this town doing amazing work. estled in the heart of Spokane, Bee Rose cultivates more than just skincare—she’s nurturing a philosophy of connection, purity, and transformation. As the founder and head formulator of H is for Love, a luxury botanical skincare line, Bee has built a brand that reflects her personal journey, her reverence for nature, and her commitment to holistic wellness. H is for Love began not as a business, but as a personal necessity. “I was home with toddlers and needed something for my brain,” Bee recalls. “I wanted really nice skincare but couldn’t afford it, so I started making it myself.” Her passion for clean ingredients and her distrust of conventional formulations led her to create products that met her own high standards. For Rose, ingredients aren’t just components—they’re sacred. “You can read the ingredient deck on two products, and they might look the same,” she explains, “but they’re not the same unless those ingredients were grown in biodynamic soil, harvested ethically, and used while fresh.” This commitment to purity and potency is what sets H is for Love apart. Rose doesn’t rely on middlemen or bulk suppliers. Her approach is deeply intuitive, yet obsessively precise. Failures, she says, are part of the chase. “When something doesn’t work, I double down. I’m all about the pursuit.” Her goal is always the same: to create the very best product possible, one that speaks the language of the body—the language of plants. The result? Oils that haven’t sat in drums for years but are freshly pressed and immediately infused. H is for Love uses long solar infusions, combining fresh oils with herbs like chamomile, calendula, lemon balm, and marshmallow root—many of which are grown right here in the Pacific Northwest. These infusions are slow, intentional, and deeply nourishing.

and wildlife abounds. “You see moose, blue herons—it’s heavenly,” she says. “I used to dream of being an expat,” she shares. “But walking through Riverfront Park one spring, I realized everything I wanted in a place—I already had here in Spokane.” Spokane provided Bee with community, support, and a connection to nature that inspires her daily. The tagline for H is for Love is simple, powerful, and deeply personal: Nature is Enough. “Nature is my inspiration and the source of everything I create.” One way she draws that inspiration is through daily grounding rituals with Honor, the oak tree on her property. ong before opening its doors in May 2025, the site served a very different purpose: it was home to a rock quarry and asphalt plant. After the property was abandoned in 2017, the Spokane Conservation District stepped in with a vision to reimagine the land as a community gathering place. “At the time, we didn’t have a clear idea of what the site would become, especially the existing structure—an oddly shaped scale house once used to weigh truckloads of gravel,” says Vicki Carter, Spokane Conservation District Director. It wasn’t until the pandemic, when the Conservation District and their Vets on the Farm program partnered with Four Roots—a woman-owned food aggregation and distribution business—that the idea for a permanent community food space took root. “Covid opened our eyes to the food insecurity in our community, and it wasn’t long before we realized that we could use the unique building as a permanent, year-round marketplace,” explains Carter.

Every May, the 50 Hour Slam competition and festival opens to all ﬁlmmakers in the Spokane and Coeur d’Alene area. It encourages new artists and challenges established filmmakers to try something new. Filmmakers have 50 hours to slam together a film to be presented and judged.

TRAIN DREAMS (2025)

VISION QUEST (1985) Vision Quest is a coming-of-age film based on a novel by Terry Davis. Matthew Modine plays a Spokane wrestler who falls in love with an older woman, an aspiring artist from New Jersey, on her way to San Francisco. Madonna also appears in the film as a singer at a local bar, and it was her first appearance in a major motion picture. The film was shot at Rogers High School, referred to as "Thompson High School" in the movie. Cafeteria scenes were filmed at Ferris High School on the South Hill in Spokane. Some of the locker room scenes used Shadle Park High School boys' locker room. Madonna's scene was at the BigFoot Tavern on North Division Street in Spokane. Other scenes feature the Ridpath Hotel, The Onion Restaurant downtown, the North Central High School gym, and Spokane Falls Community College.

Based on Denis Johnson's beloved novella, Train Dreams is the moving portrait of Robert Grainier, a logger and railroad worker who leads a life of unexpected depth and beauty in the rapidly changing America of the early 20th Century. This basketball film stars Peter Coyote, Karen Allen, and Eric Dane. The film is set on a wheat farm in rural Washington, postWorld War I. Flashbacks take viewers to downtown Spokane.

The 2006 feature film follows four Army National Guard soldiers during their tour in Iraq and once they return home. The film stars Samuel L. Jackson, Jessica Biel, Chad Michael Murray, and 50 Cent playing pivotal roles. The director utilized Spokane and Morocco as primary shooting locations. Sure, this was filmed 45 years ago, but the buildings and locations in Spokane remain the same. The romantic comedy stars Treat Williams as a compulsive liar and Lisa Eichhorn as his love interest.

This romantic comedy stars Josh Hartnett and Radha Mitchell, who begin their love story at a support group for people with autism. Filmed in Spokane, the movie features places like Riverfront Park and Gonzaga University.

The Basket (1999)

The Cutter (2005) Insert your favorite Chuck Norris joke here. This film features Riverfront Park and the old Wonder Bread factory, which has a new life as The Wonder Building, complete with a speakeasy, golf simulator, restaurants, and more. Hangman’s Curse (2003) Most of the filming for this horror film took place in Spokane, with inside and outside shots of Rogers High School. Riverside State Park also provided additional backdrops.

At Middleton (2013) This romantic comedy tells the story of two divorcees who meet while looking at colleges for their kids. Most of the film takes place in Spokane, with scenes at Gonzaga University and Washington State University as the respective colleges they visit. The Hit List (2001) This film, starring Cuba Gooding Jr., takes place in the Lilac City. The story follows a man who meets a stranger at a bar after a terrible day. He proceeds to tell the stranger about all the people he wishes were dead, and one by one, they turn up dead following their conversation. Some scenes were shot at an apartment at 115 S. Adams Street, and more crucial scenes at the Lamp Post Tavern at 408 W. Sprague Avenue. 30

TAG (2018) Okay, so Tag wasn’t actually shot in Spokane, but the story is based on ten real-life friends from Gonzaga Preparatory High School who engage in a never-ending game of tag. Dan Gonzalez, who once worked as a private chef for Microsoft co-founder Paul G. Allen, draws on the flavors of his Mexican heritage and techniques of classic French and Italian culinary traditions at his creative and contemporary Latin-inspired restaurant in Spokane’s eclectic Hillyard neighborhood. Roasted corn lends sweet and smoky flavors to the creamy pasta dish, which became an instant Spokane classic — just like The Elk — when the pub opened in 1999. Fun fact: Spokane loves a good Reuben, and The Elk’s version was featured on episode 13, titled “Sandwiches Plus,” of season 10 of Food Network’s “Diners, DriveIns and Dives” back in 2010. 1931 W. The feel is sophisticated but approachable. So is the fare. Consider housecut, twice-fried pommes frites with garlic aioli, which Hegsted recommends. He’s also a fan of the roasted carrots with a honeyharissa glaze, gremolata, and labneh. “Those carrots,” Hegsted says, “are amazing.” The roasted Brussels sprouts with maple, bacon, and Calabrian chili are sweet and spicy with a subtle char. 415 W. Indigenous Eats specializes in contemporary Native American comfort food. Its menu is built upon fry bread, a staple of Jenny Slagle’s childhood. Her mother, Violet, made fry bread for family gatherings, serving it as a side. When Slagle, an enrolled member of Yakama Nation, opened her fast-casual restaurant in the University District in 2022, that side became the menu’s star. Fry bread serves as the base of the eatery’s Indian tacos. It’s used in place of buns in the Powwow Burgers. It’s smothered with butter and honey, or huckleberry sauce and powdered sugar, for dessert. It pairs well with the tomatobased Three Sisters Soup, featuring squash, corn, and beans. Zip’s Drive-In, a local fast-food fave, proves great sides don’t have to be fancy. Founded in 1953, two years before McDonald’s, Zip’s now has nearly 40 locations throughout eastern Washington and Idaho. Most are concentrated in and around Spokane. Expect slight menu differences store to store. Look for the beer-battered mushrooms, which arrive piping hot — so hot that Hegsted compares them to molten lava. Looff Carrousel Handcarved by Charles Looff in 1909, the carrousel was a gift for Looff’s daughter and her husband, who owned Spokane’s Natatorium Park. That park is long gone, but the carrousel remains and delights both young and old.

Numerica Skate Ribbon It’s not your typical skating rink. It’s a ribbon. The Numerica Skate Ribbon meanders through the west end of Riverfront Park. It’s ice skating in the winter, but in the summer months, you can roller skate.

Garbage Goat He sucks, but in a cool way. The goat sucks up any garbage you may have in your purse or pockets. This iconic metal sculpture, created by Sister Paula Turnbull, has a vacuum inside it.

Great Northern Clock Tower A remnant of the Great Northern Rail Depot, the tower is a silent sentinel tracking the time. It takes a technician 99 cranks to keep the clock going for one week.

Providence Playscape Providence Playscape is the city’s first allinclusive playground. It allows free movement for children with assisted devices. It’s sensoryrich and designed to promote physical activity and gross motor development skills.

Its official title is “The Childhood Express,” but locals call it the giant red wagon. Not only is this whimsical sculpture fun to look at, but it’s a working play structure, too!

Young visitors can play on one of two playgrounds and a splash pad.

pokane is the biggest city between Seattle and Minneapolis, and it’s full of adventure, amazing food, and fluffy pillows for resting your head after having a day of exploring. I knew nothing about Spokane when I showed up for a first visit a few years ago, but the city surprised me. As a travel writer, that takes some work. I knew I would come back, and I did over and over again. Since then, I’ve ziplined at Mica Moon, hiked the area’s many trails, eaten fantastic food from James Beard finalists, laughed at live stand-up shows, and dove into their ever-creative and expanding cocktail bar scene. Several visits later, I discovered a place that feels like a second home. I even recently joined the city’s Boulevard Race to fight cancer. When the race started three years ago, it had just a few hundred runners, and now around 3500 Spokanites participate, with locals cheering on runners along the route. The community energy was alive. So if you’re fortunate enough to visit Spokane, here’s how anyone, from solo travelers to families, can also fall in love with the city like I have.

Anyone Can Opt Outside

If you're looking for those traditional Washington state views from above, try the 6-mile loop of the Rocks of Sharon, a five-to-six-mile loop at Dishman Hills Conservation Area—be sure to spend some time soaking in the panoramic views from the granite rocks at the peak. At Mount Spokane State Park, there are dozens of trails to explore, and the Mount Kit Carson Trail is a forested trail with a scenic vista as your reward. If you’re up for whitewater rafting or scenic rafting, Wiley E. Waters will take you for a ride down the Spokane or Clark Fork rivers.

Spokane’s easy access to the outdoors is one of the things I love most about the city. There is a trail for anyone, whether you want a rigorous hike, a group run, a chance for alone time sitting in silence on a mountain peak, or a calm nature walk.

Spokane is Family Ready Have kids? Spokane’s got you covered. Once a dirty old rail yard, Riverfront Park downtown was transformed into a beautiful green space over 50 years ago for the first World’s Fair focused on the environment. Now it is a place where concerts and cultural events are held in the The Gesa Credit Union Pavilion. The enclosed gondola of the Numerica SkyRide will take you over the rushing Spokane River and its waterfalls. The paved and accessible Centennial Trail at Riverfront Park is perfect for bikes or Lime Scooters, and younger kids will love an adventure on the rentable, four-wheeled Pedal Karts.

The Looff Carrousel is a great starting point for fun. The historic carrousel was created in 1909 and is wheelchair accessible. The family can ride its horses, dragons, giraffe, or tiger, while tossing rings at a Garbage Goat target. Head around the corner to find a big red wagon— the 12-foot-high and 27-foot-long Radio Flyer with a slide. Kids will also love the Ice Age Floods Playground’s three-story tower with slides. Have them feed the Garbage Goat, a statue that inhales your small, light garbage when you feed it.

If your kids are eager to thrash around on their skateboards, bring them to the new Skate and Wheels Park. And if it’s winter, ice skate at the Numerica Skate Ribbon. Manito Park is a lush green space with bike and running trails that will take you through beautiful Duncan Gardens, a formal English garden, or Nishinomiya Tsutakawa, a Japanese garden named for Spokane’s sister city. (It’s also a good place to take your young birders.)

Eat Your Way Around Spokane Whenever I travel, I look for places with a good food scene, and every time I come to Spokane, I find something new waiting for me. While there are no shortages of great food options, here are a few of my favorites. For breakfast, try Frank’s vintage railcar diner for a retro vibe and a creative menu. Get your breakfast sandwich fix at Maple Street Bistro or that sweet dessert for breakfast at The People’s Waffle.

End the Day on a Nice Pillow While the city is a good choice for any length of visit, give yourself at least three days for your Spokane adventure, and you won’t regret it. Hotel options range from unique Spokane institutions with a history to your favorite chain. Among the places I’ve stayed at, the historic Davenport, The Louie, and The Montvale Hotel are among my favorites that keep you in the city. Families will enjoy Ruby River Hotel, which has outdoor pools and playgrounds along with a river view. While Spokane is never a sleepy town, that doesn’t mean it’s not a good place to rest.

Spokane Chiefs Hockey Numerica Veterans Memorial Arena Season: September-March Spokane’s junior hockey team plays in the Western Hockey League and has been a staple in the city for over 60 years. Like the Spokane Indians, Chiefs tickets are affordable, and the games are family-friendly.

Washington State University Football Gesa Field Season: August-November You’ll get your gridiron fix with the Cougs. Experiencing a PAC 12 game at Martin Stadium surrounded by the rolling hills and wheat fields of the Palouse is always worth the 90-minute drive south from Spokane. Eastern Washington University Football Roos Field Season: August-November The red turf is what you notice at first, but after you get settled at Roos Field, you’ll soon realize how fun it is to watch the Eagles play. For entertainment, you’ll find it with Gonzaga athletics. Did we mention Spokane is home to the famous Zags men’s and women’s basketball teams? A Gonzaga Baseball game is also a good spring option. Go to Myrtle Woldson Performing Arts Center for ballet, concerts, and theater. No visit is complete without stopping at the Jundt Art Museum and Bing Crosby Museum.
