The city of Moquegua was founded by the Spanish colonists in 1541 with the name of Villa de Santa Catalina de Alejandría. Its inhabitants were mainly engaged in viticulture and winemaking.

What to eat?

The cuisine of the coast of Moquegua is enriched by marine products. Some emblematic dishes are roasted octopus, seafood picante (a stew of mashed potatoes and red chili pepper with barnacles and machas). In the Andean area, guinea pig is used in preparations, such as picante de cuy, pepian de cuy (a guinea pig stew with peanut sauce and chili peppers) and cuy frito. Other dishes include patasca moqueguana (broth of entrails with mote corn and peppermint) and chupe de camarones (shrimp soup with milk, egg, and oregano). The region is also known for its traditional breads and sweets. In addition to its famous wines and piscos, Moquegua also produces liqueurs, such as leche de monja (pisco, egg and lemon), apricot macerate and three-fig chimbango.

What to buy?

Crafts with marine elements, textiles and crafts influenced by the Chiribaya culture (Ancient Peru). Works with copper embossing, decorative ornaments or fabrics influenced by the Contisuyo culture. Alpaca and sheep fiber fabrics, ideal for low temperatures.

Plaza Mayor of Moquegua

In the middle of this renovated square, surrounded by some of the most emblematic buildings in the city, an ornamental fountain stands out, the work of the Parisian foundry Jean-Jacques Ducel et Fils. This fountain, installed in 1877 represents Talia, Aglaya and Euphrosyne, the three graces of Greek mythology.

The stone façade of this church, built in 1660 and rebuilt in 1792, stands out. It shows some marks of the stonemasons to certify the participation of indigenous communities in its construction. The church exhibits a mural painted by indigenous artists by the end of the 18th century.

Museo Contisuyo

Cl. Moquegua s/n, Plaza Mayor. Mon-Fri, 8:30-12:30, 14:30-17:30 and Sat, 8:30-11:30. Entrance fee charged.

The Contisuyo museum is located behind the façade of the old Iglesia Matriz and exhibits ceramics, textiles and metallurgical pieces from the Wari and Tiahuanaco cultures. There is also a collection of archaeological finds from pre-Inca cultures that occupied valleys of Moquegua and Ilo, such as Chiribaya, Tumilaca and Estuquiña.

It is one of the oldest buildings in the city. By 1762 it was a place of detention for rebels. During the Pacific War, it functioned as headquarters and then, until 1985, a prison. The building was restored and today you can see its original floors.

This 18th-century mansion has windows with iron Sevillian grilles and the longest balcony in the south of the country.

Casa Vargas Morán

Traditional mansion of the late nineteenth century, with wooden floors and doors, carved stone courtyards, adobe walls and slanted ceiling. Currently, the Anglo-American information center operates here.

Previous coordination with Casa Chocano is needed to visit this 19th-century mansion that preserves the furniture and decoration of the time.

Casa del Conde de Alastaya

On the façade of this mansion built in 1750, you can see the heraldic coat of arms belonging to the Nieto y Roa family. Its columns, carved with representations of the local flora, are remarkable.

This is the house of José Carlos Mariátegui, one of the most important Peruvian thinkers of the twentieth century.

This house has a beautiful masonry façade with a wooden balcony. Inside is the oldest jar in America, dated 1540.

Belén is a traditional neighborhood that maintains its Colonial and Republican architecture. Among its houses with slanted ceilings and wooden balconies, the walls of a colonial hospital stand out, one of the oldest in the country.

The Pisco and Wine Route is designed to visit different vineyards and learn about the artisanal production techniques used since colonial times and about the semi-industrial processes. The following wineries that are part of the Pisco and Wine Route:

The white Chris that crowns this natural viewpoint is the guardian of the city. From here you can get beautiful panoramic photos of Moquegua and its surroundings.

88 miles (141 km) north of the city of Moquegua, town of Calacoa (4 h by car)

The water is expelled by the geysers up to 16 ft (5 m) high, creating a true natural spectacle. Pools of different sizes are formed in the surroundings.

General Sánchez Cerro Province

91 miles (147 km) north of the city of Moquegua (3 h by car)

The 17 population centers that make up the valley live from the cultivation of fruits and cattle ranching. In the main square of the village of Omate is the colonial temple of San Lino, built in adobe and with a high altar of wood and gold leaf. Omate is known for its production of bread, which in the 19th century was prepared with ground wheat in hydraulic stone mills, located in the upper part of the town. Since 2010, Easter Week has been a National Cultural Heritage.

Ilo Province

The temple, built in 1871, has a single nave of wood and corrugated iron. Its bell has an inscription of the year 1647. Its inner walls are decorated in gold leaves.

Throughout the city there are nineteenth century old mansions characterized by their double slanted ceilings, spacious rooms and imposing façades with gates and windows. Some of the best known are those of the Gambetta, Zapata, Valdivia, Segovia, Malatesta and Jiménez de la Flor areas, among others.

Glorieta José Gálvez and Muelle Fiscal

Prlg. Calle 28 de Julio, on the boardwalk of the Ilo city Iconic construction of the city since 1915. The iron viewpoint with wooden supports is located on a boulder and joins the boardwalk by the Venus bridge. From there you can enjoy a beautiful view of the sea, the boats, the sea lions, and the birds that visit the coast. The Fiscal Pier was built at the end of the 19th century to facilitate port activity and next to it is the current small-scale fishermen’s pier.

Its collection includes archaeological pieces from the cultures developed in Ilo and focuses mainly on the Chiribaya culture. It has a view of the El Algarrobal valley and the Chiribaya ranch, where Marshal Domingo Nieto was born.

The national reserve of guano islands, islets and capes is home to approx. 3,500 sea lions, Humboldt penguins, otters and guano birds (pelicans, boobies, terns, and seagulls).

Geoglifos de Chen Chen

1 mile (1.5 km) southwest of the city of Moquegua (15 min by car)

Chen Chen geoglyphs form one of the most important settlements of the Tiahuanaco culture on the southern Andean coast of Peru. There are mainly zoomorphic representations of camelids on the ground of this chain of hills. The silhouettes can be seen preferably very early or at sunset.

Torata District

12 miles (20 km) northeast of the city of Moquegua (25 min by car / 40 min by bus)

Traditional village with lanted-roof houses and a beautiful countryside. It stands out for its archaeological wealth, as in its surroundings are the Inca administrative center of Sabaya and the archaeological sites of Torata, Camata and Cerro Baúl. Torata’s stone mills give an account of its colonial past.

Mon-Fri, 8:00-17:00. Entrance fee charged.

This walled citadel, built by the Waris (600-1100 AD), is located on top of a trunk-shaped mountain. It is visited by those who want to make rituals and offerings to the land and the Apus (mountains). Every year, during Easter, thousands of people make the journey to its summit.

Catarata de Mollesaja

Mollesaja Grande sector, town of Yacango, Torata district, 12 miles (20 km) northeast of the city of Moquegua (35 min by car and 20 min on foot)

After a walk along the cobbled path on the slopes of the hills, you can access this waterfall, more than 330 ft (100 m) high, fed by the Pasto Grande lagoon.

Valle del Tixani

119 miles (192 km) north of the city of Moquegua (3-4 h by car)

An Inter-Andean valley where the towns of the districts of Carumas, Cuchumbaya and San Cristóbal are located. Potato and oregano grow in this area, and there is a growing livestock sector. In addition to its beautiful landscapes, it has geysers and hot springs. Its main attractions are the practice of mountaineering and its traditions of Aymara origin, with the dance of Sarawja, La Palomita and Los Pules declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation.

The beach is called “River mouth” because the Ilo river flows here. The sand is fine and behind the rocks you can find Conchuela, a beach with a privileged view of the bay.

• Wawakiki

23 miles (37 km) north of the city of Ilo (30 min by car)

With clear and fine sand, it is ideal for camping. In the surrounding hills there are archaeological remains.

• Platanales

23 miles (37 km) north of the city of Ilo (30 min by car)

The caves of this fine sandy beach have petroglyphs. Camping is possible.

• Puerto Inglés

1.2 miles (2 km) south of the city of Ilo (5 min by car)

The cliffs form a natural pool of crystalline and calm waters.

• Pozo de Lisas

4 miles (7 km) south of the city of Ilo (12 min by car)

Paradisiacal beach with clear sand and calm waters that has places that offer food. Its conditions make it perfect for family tourism.

• Tronco de Oro

18 miles (29 km) south of the city of Ilo (30 min by car)

Its fine sand and calm waters make it ideal for camping.

• Jaboncillo

19 miles (14 km) north of the city of Ilo

With calm waters and white sand. There is a pool of fresh water. Camping is possible.

• Enfermeras

9 miles (14 km) north of the city of Ilo

Easily accessible beach, it is an area surrounded by high rocky cliffs that simulate a natural pool with calm waters.

• Coquina

9 miles (14 km) north of the city of Ilo

It is next to Bolivia Mar beach, with calm waters, light blue on the shore and green in the depths.

In this ranch is a 400-years Olive Tree, the oldest in America.

• Chiviquina

10 miles (15.9 km) north of the city of Ilo

With an area of 4 hectares, it has 165 olive trees in production, several of which are more than 300 years old.
