New IN Norfolk There is a lot of excitement percolating in Norfolk for 2026, as the year brings a fresh wave of openings, upgrades and long-awaited returns across the city. From major civic investments to expanded green spaces and new cultural experiences, Norfolk is adding depth to what it already does best: welcoming people in, offering something real and constantly moving forward. And, if you haven’t already checked out 2025’s additions to the city’s growth — including the recently renovated Nauticus and Perry Glass Studio — now is your chance. Here’s a look at what has us most excited.

Norfolk Casino isn’t set to fully open until 2027, but late 2025 saw the soft opening of a temporary structure called The Interim. Its gaming floor gives a glimpse into what to expect over the coming year as the casino takes shape. The long-anticipated resort will bring gaming, live entertainment, restaurants and waterfront views along the Elizabeth River next door to Harbor Park. The Garden of Tomorrow at Norfolk Botanical Garden opens as a major architectural and environmental landmark. Its elevated walkways, four new biomes, new visitor center, glass sculptures from renowned artist Dale Chihuly and event spaces create one of the most impressive garden experiences in the Mid-Atlantic. The Barry Art Museum Expansion at Old Dominion University will more than double its gallery space with a three‑story “Waitzer Wing” that includes a community gallery, event

space, media/video gallery, educational lab and additional space. This expansion is a strategic leap that will position Barry as a stronger connector between campus, local artists and the region’s cultural scene. The Elizabeth River Trail is advancing its master plan with upgraded trailheads at Jeff Robertson Park and Larchmont Library. These will include new public art projects, seating areas, native gardens and modern amenities. A new visitor center will be headquartered in the Chelsea District, offering information and tips for trailgoers. With existing sculptures already dotting the path and a commitment to more wayfinding, kayak launches and lighting, the trail’s enhancements will serve cyclists and walkers for years to come. Selden Market, everyone’s favorite mini-mall in Norfolk, grows again, introducing new local makers, small-batch food vendors and creative pop-ups after a massive renovation in late 2025. The indoor market remains a proving ground for

Norfolk’s next generation of entrepreneurs. Sail250® Virginia brings tall ships and international attention to Norfolk’s waterfront in summer 2026 (see feature on page 34). Expect a citywide celebration of history, heritage and maritime pride. First Fridays returns in full for 2026, expanding the popular outdoor block party into a consistent seasonal series. Look for live music, local food and downtown energy that carries through Norfolk’s warmest months. The Norfolk International Airport kicks off weekly direct flights to Cancun, Mexico via Breeze this year, as well as daily direct flights to and from Boston via JetBlue. Make sure to swing by the MacArthur Memorial on your next trip Downtown. The memorial’s 175-year-old dome recently underwent extensive renovation and is ready to welcome visitors hoping to learn more about General Douglas MacArthur and his contribution to world history.

Downtown and the NEON District are fueled by art, dining and bustling waterfront energy, while Ocean View offers miles of public beach access along the Chesapeake Bay in a relaxed coastal pace. Alongside the ship, the museum’s expanded galleries and hands-on exhibits bring maritime stories to life, while the Trail of Honor just steps away offers a meaningful walk through military history. This waterfront setting makes for a perfect photo backdrop before continuing your journey downtown to the MacArthur Memorial, a museum and research center honoring General Douglas MacArthur and the millions who served with him, a landmark experience that feels right at home in the nation’s capital. At Town Point Park, waterfront festivals fill the calendar thanks to Festevents, the team behind Harborfest, Bayou Bon Vivant, the twice-annual Virginia Wine Festival and Juneteenth in the Park. Right next door is the Waterside District, featuring food, live music and views for days. Food and drink in Downtown Norfolk are just as dynamic as the city itself. The NEON District — short for New Energy of Norfolk — is where creativity takes center stage. Bright murals and playful installations cover nearly every surface turning this neighborhood into a walkable art gallery. As Norfolk’s official arts district, it’s bursting with bold expression and electric charm. From impromptu street performances to curated exhibitions, NEON is made for the curious. Pop into the d’Art Center to meet working artists and browse ever-changing studios or catch a live show at Push Comedy Theater or the stunning Harrison Opera House. When it’s time to refuel, head to Zeke’s Beans and Bowls. Zeke’s creates Acai bowls, Korean pork tacos, poke nachos and other unexpected treats to fuel your day. Nearby Zinnia is perfect for soups, sandwiches and salads before perusing the world-class collection at the Chrysler Museum of Art.

Chelsea Elizabeth River Trail

A hip, on-the-rise neighborhood known for its breweries, coffee shops, meandering bike trails and pet-friendly restaurants. With the Elizabeth River Trail cutting a path directly through it, Chelsea makes for the perfect stopover on a morning jog, ride or dog walk. Show off your golf game with a little putt-putt at Bogey’s 757 or catch a show at Little Theatre of Norfolk. Bringing your furry friend? Feel free to drop them off at doggy day care at Dogtown while you explore the city. Nearby Plum Point Park offers big views and a kayak launch in a small but picturesque garden setting. You’ll find a handful of local restaurants to try like Vessel Coffee, a great place for a caffeinated treat, or The Bakehouse at Chelsea serving up delicious pastries as well as wood fired-pizzas. Get a taste of local brews from Benchtop Brewing and although they don’t have a tasting room you’ll have to stop at Reverend Distillery for a bottle of locally distilled spirits. Stop by The Birch for a unique variety of beers, cider and mead alongside one of their many DIY grilled cheese selections. The Elizabeth River Trail currently stretches 10.5 miles across Norfolk, offering runners, walkers and cyclists plenty of terrain to explore. In 2026, the ERT is expanding as a National Recreational Trail, connecting to more neighborhoods as part of a larger 82-mile regional trail network. This year also sees the ERT’s move to Chelsea, where its Trailside Headquarters will be a one-stop trail visitor information center for trail lovers. With retail space, curated experiences, bike rentals, water refill stations and more, the 1,300 square foot space will be at the corner of Raleigh Ave. and Orapax St.

This up-and-coming neighborhood is a hub for local businesses, full of new restaurants, breweries and shops. Steeped in history – Park Place was Norfolk’s first planned streetcar suburb – this neighborhood works hard to retain its beauty, as evidenced by a recent push to plant dozens of new trees. The area's overall industrial feel gives Railroad District a slightly edgy warehouse vibe while its location just above the railroad tracks gives the neighborhood its name. Riverview is a welcoming neighborhood along the Lafayette River, perhaps best known as the home of the AZA-accredited Virginia Zoo. Before moving to Norfolk from France, the bakery’s owner, Jacqueline, would consistently visit her sister in the region and ask, “where can I get a good croissant?” The simple question sparked the idea for her and her husband to open a bakery of their own in Norfolk, now welcoming guests with warmth and fresh aromas. Find buttery croissants, chocolate and almond eclairs, daily sandwiches, and classic warm baguettes to go.

Mr. Shawarma – 725 W. 21st St. Served cafeteria-style, Mr. Shawarma offers some of the best Middle Eastern street food in the area, offering fresh falafel, warm pita bread and flavored hummus including spicy Jalapeno Cilantro and Habanero Chili. Top your meal with Garlic Sauce, Tahini, or Amba Sauce, and ask staff for recommendations to create the perfect pita or bowl. French Bakery & Delicatessen – 4108 Granby St. This Lebanese deli and bakery has been family-owned-and-operated for the past 111 years serving traditional classic deli sandwiches that pair with some of the sweetest dessert treats. Owner, George Habib Jr., pours heart and soul into each customer’s order including their most known, melt-inyour-mouth, pastrami sandwiches on homemade French bread. Inside you will find what feels like a simpler time with black-and-white family photos personalizing the walls, a retro Coca-Cola refrigerator and glass display cases showing off dozens of sweet treats.

Yendidi

Luce – 245 Granby St. Luce’s intimate setting that is paired with a contemporary twist on authentic Italian food makes it the ideal place for a romantic evening downtown. Inspired by both the northern and southern regions of Italy, favorites include Mushroom Toast, Wild Boar Ragu, and of course, all the divine ever-changing desserts. Owner Tony Caruana has also expanded into the neighboring space to have a premium Italian market and deli called il Mercato di Grazia.

Grace O'Malley's Irish Pub – 211 Granby St.

La Brioche

Norfolk’s only Irish pub, Grace O’Malley’s is centrally located in the heart of downtown and brings a true taste of Ireland to downtown. Everything in the pub was shipped directly from Ireland; the mahogany woodwork, the light fixtures and even the tile. The live Irish performers of Gaelic song and dance complement dishes like Shepherd’s Pie and Corned Beef Irish Subs, best enjoyed with a pint of Guinness.

Monastery Restaurant – 443 Granby St. This Czechoslovakian restaurant has lived on Granby Street for over 30 years, making it one of Norfolk’s oldest and most beloved restaurants with historic charm and traditional European warmth. Step inside for dark wood, chandeliers, and the aroma of homemade goulash. Their menu includes classic dishes like their La Raclette Valaisienne appetizer, Wiener Schnitzel, Cassoulet Maison, and sweet Palacinki.

From Norfolk’s strategic location as a point on the Underground Railroad to the site of a Revolutionary War shelling and a key Civil War nautical battle, the city has been an integral part of the nation’s turning points. Today, visitors can tour neighborhoods with homes dating back to the 1700s, walk through Fort Norfolk, a 19th Century military garrison with ties to a Founding Father and visit a bounty of African-American history landmarks – all in the city with the world’s largest naval base.

The African-American community is also a major part of American and Virginia history, and no place symbolizes this better than Norfolk. A key landmark celebrating this legacy is the historic Attucks Theatre. Built in 1919, it is the oldest remaining theater in the nation designed, built, and operated by African Americans, standing as a powerful symbol of the community's resilience and artistic spirit – and a reminder that not all voices in American history came from the shores of Europe. A Deeply Rooted History While America may be turning 250, Norfolk's history actually dates back more than 400 years, making it one of the oldest cities in the country. African American Heritage and the Attucks Theatre

Norfolk is also part of Waterways to Freedom, a significant network that helped enslaved individuals seek freedom through the Underground Railroad. For more local history, visit the Norfolk Botanical Garden, which was built by 220 African American men and women as part of a 1938 Works Progress Administration grant. Norfolk's West Point Cemetery is the final resting place for 20 Black veterans who fought for the Union in the Civil War – a 1920 monument stands sentinel over their graves.

Rebuilding After Adversity Norfolk’s resilience has been tested many times, particularly during the 19th Century. After a devastating fire in 1804 that destroyed much of its downtown, Norfolk rebuilt itself with a determination that reflected the spirit of its people. The city has continually transformed, facing challenges head-on and emerging stronger each time. This spirit of resilience is still visible today, with Norfolk constantly evolving to meet the needs of its diverse population while preserving its rich historical legacy. A Hub of Military and International Influence In 2025, the United States Army, Navy and Marines all celebrated their 250th anniversaries, and Norfolk’s story continues to be profoundly shaped by its military ties. Home to Naval Station Norfolk, the world’s largest naval base, and NATO's North American headquarters, the city has a longstanding tradition of training the best and brightest to defend democracy – both 250 years ago and today. Tattoo. Fun fact: George Washington would call his troops to “taptoo” (Dutch for tap-toe) which signalled the closing of pubs at 9 p.m. for soldiers. Today, this term is known as “tattoo,” a tradition carried on in the annual festival held here each April. Visitors can make a stop at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church where, during the Revolutionary War, Lord Dunmore fired a cannonball that remains stuck in the church’s south-facing wall – it’s now part of the historic and fascinating Cannonball Trail. Look out at the Elizabeth River from the Waterside District or Plum Point Park to see where the Battle of the Monitor and Merrimack pitted ironclad ships against one another during America’s Civil War. Linger at Fort Norfolk to see one of the nation’s oldest harborfront forts authorized by George Washington in 1794. Dig deeper into the area’s maritime history at the Hampton Roads Naval Museum inside Nauticus. While at Nauticus, learn more about the area’s maritime history including the Port of Virginia, the fifth-largest container port in the United States, and a major employer in Norfolk. Sports in Norfolk: It’s Game Day

No matter the time of year, Norfolk is home to plenty of action-packed games, matches and tournaments. Here, you’ll find minor league hockey and baseball as well as college sports and a nationally-televised college hoops tourney in top-notch sporting venues.

You don’t need a major league team to have big fun, and that’s exactly what Norfolk offers with its pair of minor league franchises. The Triple-A Baltimore Orioles affiliates, the Norfolk Tides, play at Harbor Park, offering stunning views, an old-school atmosphere and seriously competitive games. In fact, the Tides were the 2023 Triple-A champions. Up the road, you’ll find Scope Arena, home to the ECHL Premier AA Hockey League team the Norfolk Admirals, affiliates of the Winnipeg Jets and the Manitoba Moose. They clash against other East Coast teams with pure energy and excitement in a large arena that’s often packed to the gills.

College Sports

Home to both Old Dominion University and Norfolk State University, the city offers multiple chances to check out college football, basketball, baseball, lacrosse, rugby, soccer and other collegiate sports nearly all-year round. The ODU Monarchs play football at S.B. Ballard Stadium, while basketball games are held at Chartway Arena. In March, as college basketball playoffs get under way, the annual Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) men’s and women’s basketball tournaments are held at Scope Arena. Teams from Historically Black Colleges and Universities from throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast converge on Norfolk for the televised tournament.

Before You Board Parking for cruise passengers is located at Cedar Grove Lot (1000 Monticello Avenue), about 1.5 miles from the terminal. As of early 2026, cost is $15 per day and the property is fenced, monitored 24/7 and includes luggage check-in and shuttle service directly to the terminal curbside. Shuttles run continuously starting around 10:15 a.m. on embarkation days, and ADA parking and accessible shuttles are available. Limited ADA drop-off spaces are located at Nauticus for those with proper credentials.

pring is a season full of energy. As we start to shake off the chill of winter and welcome warmer days and colorful blooms, the city kicks off its active line up of events. Temperatures make their return to the high 60s, low 70s and the days get longer. Which means more time spent outside exploring the Elizabeth River Trail on foot or bicycle (just in time for Bike Month in May) and wandering the rows of azalea blooms and roses at Norfolk Botanical Garden. Throughout the season you’ll find a variety of festivals and events taking place starting with the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in March. Featuring the best in regional college hoops, this weeklong NCAA Division 1 tournament is composed of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, drawing thousands of visitors annually. Each April, sports fans eagerly await the start of the season for Norfolk's Baltimore Orioles Triple-A affiliates, the Norfolk Tides. Catch the tail end of the hockey season at Scope Arena, where the Norfolk Admirals (ECHL affiliates of the Winnipeg Jets) often play deep into the post-season. Norfolk’s vibrant art scene goes beyond art and museums with the Virginia Arts Festival. From the wheelchair-accessible top deck of the American Rover schooner to the first level of our City Cruises Norfolk ships and the easy-to-access Nauticus maritime discovery center, there’s no reason to skip the fun in Norfolk. Outdoor attractions such as the Norfolk Botanical Garden and the Virginia Zoo welcome all with accessible parking, sensory inclusive offerings and wheelchairs for rent. Explore the historic estate at The Hermitage Museum & Garden with wheelchair accessible spaces and dig into history at the fully-accessible MacArthur Memorial downtown. The Arts Most of the museums in Norfolk fully adhere to ADA compliance standards, so start off at the Chrysler Museum of Art, where an amazing collection of artifacts, paintings, sculptures and glass art reside. D’Art Center lets you get up close with working artists all on a single lower level with accessible parking and a ramped entrance. Outdoor Activities

Norfolk’s Ocean View Beach features a pair of access ramps and walkways for those looking to soak in some sunshine and cool, ocean breezes. A new beach access ramp was unveiled in late 2025. Visitors are encouraged to kayak the Elizabeth River, thanks to the EZ Launch Accessible Transfer System that allows kayakers to transfer wheelchairs to a bench where they can lower themselves into a kayak. For visitors to the Norfolk Botanical Garden, wheelchairs are available for rent. The garden’s trams, garden pathways, picnic shelters and other facilities are all wheelchair accessible.

Sports Norfolk’s AAA minor league baseball team, the Norfolk Tides, play at scenic Harbor Park, where 250 accessible seats are offered, along with accessible parking, entrances and restrooms. Service dogs are also welcome. If you’re visiting Scope Arena to check out our ECHL hockey team, the Norfolk Admirals, rest easy knowing that ADA-approved parking gets you to the game easily, while accessible seating is available in the arena, along with elevators and other accessible facilities.

Riding Amtrak is a convenient way to move up and down the east coast, with Norfolk as a major hub. Onboard its Northeast Regional train, ADA restrooms and accessible seating are available, while at the station, Amtrak-provided wheelchairs are available as is assistance boarding and deboarding the train. Getting around town, Hampton Roads Transit welcomes service animals and offers free fares via its Paratransit services. Take a ride on one of its three Elizabeth River Ferries which is easy to access via wheelchair, allowing visitors to explore downtown Norfolk and nearby Portsmouth.
