MOURNE AND RING OF GULLION PUBLIC ART

The Mourne Mountains and the Ring of Gullion are two examples of Northern Ireland’s finest landscapes, where you will experience rocky wild mountains, formed by both ancient volcanoes and glacial ice, ring dykes, rugged hills, woodland, patterned fields of small farms, rich and diverse habitats and a coast comprised of rocks, sand-dune systems and beaches. This richness is reflected in the designation of these areas as Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The two areas, lying in close proximity, enjoy a particularly rich cultural heritage which is derived from their natural qualities — they are alive with history and bursting with culture. These attributes have inspired artists for years; from Percy French who composed the world famous song, ‘The Mountains of Mourne’, to C.S. Lewis, who’s creation of Narnia was inspired by boyhood holidays and to fairy tales of the conquests of Cuchulain and artists of the spoken word — ancient tellers of legends to more recent romantic poets. Even some of the built heritage, like the iconic Mourne Wall and the summit towers on the highest peaks of the Mournes, can be seen as works of art by the skilled craftsmen who worked the granite stone. More recently, talented sculptors and artists have created a range of pieces of public art, installed at both popular and off the beaten track locations. Viewing these provides a wonderful way to explore the area in all its facets and to experience its unique heritage and stories in a creative and memorable way. We hope you enjoy following our public art trail.
