One Bench. Seven Stories. A Whole Host of Characters. You never know who you’ll meet on a park bench!
“The Bench” is a 60-minute show suitable for audiences aged 14+
Two performers - Julie Kinsella and Maria Quinn - play a total of 14 characters (some human, some not!) whose stories play out over one afternoon on a solitary, sunny park bench.
“The Bench” takes a look at the wonderful, quirky characters that inhabit our towns and villages while you, the audience, hear their tales unfold. The themes are universal: friendship, love, loss, an appreciation of nature … and a dash of the absurd.
The show was performed as “Benches”, an outdoor promenade-style piece at the Eastside Arts Festival in 2025 and on tour in the villages around the Causeway Coast and was a hit with audiences and venues alike.
Don’t miss your chance to see it performed at Down Arts Centre in April 2026!

The exhibition opens on Thursday 2nd April, with a special evening launch from 7pm to 9pm, and will run until Friday 1st May, giving families and visitors plenty of time to enjoy this vibrant and heartwarming showcase.
Best known for her vibrant, character-filled snail paintings, Dawn has transformed her much-loved studio style into a magical storytelling experience. Visitors to the exhibition will have the rare chance to see the original artworks from the book up close—each hand-painted in Dawn’s signature bold, colourful oil paints. The gallery will be filled with warmth, whimsy, and the uplifting message at the heart of the story: that creativity can take you anywhere if you dare to dream.
This event is designed with families and children in mind. Young visitors will be delighted by the brave little snail who dreams big in The Snail Artist, while parents and book lovers will enjoy exploring the artwork that inspired the story. Dawn will also be on hand for book signings, friendly chats, and exclusive insights into her creative process.
Whether you’re a family seeking a magical day out, a child who loves stories and pictures, or a book lover who appreciates beautifully crafted illustration, this exhibition is an absolute must-see. Step into a world where imagination leads the way—and discover a story that encourages every child to pick up a paintbrush and believe in their own creative spark.
Join us at Down Arts Centre for a heart-warming celebration of art, storytelling, and the joy of dreaming big. This is one event you won’t want to miss.

Down Arts Collective is a welcoming monthly gathering for artists of all disciplines who live, work, or create within Newry, Mourne and Down.
Inspired by the nurturing, reflective spirit of spaces like the Tyrone Guthrie Centre, this hub is a place to pause, meet kindred creatives, and nourish the long game of artmaking — not alone, but together.
Whether you’re a painter, performer, writer, filmmaker, musician, community artist, or simply a curious creative soul, Down Arts Collective offers an open door and a warm cup of coffee.
In a landscape where artists often work in isolation or compete for limited resources, this hub provides an antidote: a regular, gently held space for peer connection, creative visibility, and mutual support.
OUR GOALS ARE SIMPLE BUT VITAL:
• To connect local artists and creative practitioners across disciplines
• To support artistic practice through dialogue, shared knowledge, and funding insights
• To nurture the arts ecology of the region through collective momentum
• To cultivate a sense of belonging and purpose for artists in our rural and urban communities
CSILLA TOLDY
I am delighted to be appointed as artist in residence at Down Arts Centre. My residency will take place over five months from November 2025 to the end of March 2026.
My background is in creative writing and filmmaking. I have published two novels, a short story collection, a non-fiction book for children and five volumes of poetry, one of them with Jonathan Heyhoe, photographer.
Since 2007, I have been making film poems and short documentary films. They can be viewed on my website and on YouTube. www.csillatoldy.co.uk
Anyone interested in my work is welcome to come to my Drop-in sessions on Mondays and Fridays 10 am - 1pm at Down Arts Centre. Please book your place by sending an e-mail to csilla.toldy@gmail.com
As an artist in residence, I am delivering workshops to youth groups and adults and children of all abilities in the community and will be visiting primary and secondary schools in the area.
The Artist in Residence opportunity at Down Arts Centre represents a significant step forward in my practice. I will develop a new body of work titled “Imbolc”, which will examine themes of ancient traditions, environmental change, belonging, and cultural memory across the district. I will collect footage and ambient field recordings in the area to culminate in the creation of a public art work—a film poem, to be screened at the Craft Exhibition at Down Arts Centre in August 2026.
Following ancient traditions, we will have a “Wishing Tree” - at the Centre - I am asking you to make a wish, not only for yourself, but for our island, our world, the planet.
Let’s make art a ritual and everyday practice.
