‘Enormous opportunity’: University grows with City of Moreton Bay

That’s Deliciously Moreton!

Opening a new campus in Moreton Bay in 2020 has proven a pivotal move for the University of the Sunshine Coast – and for the city.

UniSC Moreton Bay now offers over 80 degrees to more than 4,000 students. By 2035, this is anticipated to grow to around 10,000 students, similar in size to UniSC’s Sunshine Coast campus.

Due to pent-up community demand, enrolments to UniSC Moreton Bay have bucked national trends and exceeded expectations, while a pipeline of skilled graduates helps attract new industry.

“National and international companies are moving to the area telling us they need graduates in technology, engineering, science, education, aged care and social assistance as soon as possible, so we are helping students gain employment even before they complete their studies.”

City of Moreton Bay, a hidden gem located north of Brisbane, has emerged as a captivating and vibrant tourism destination, drawing visitors from Australia and around the world to its breathtaking landscapes, diverse attractions, and delectable culinary experiences.

With $80 million invested into three new campus buildings set to open in early 2024, UniSC Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Helen Bartlett says the time has never been better for local industry, university experts and graduates to collaborate. “With Moreton Bay’s population projected to increase to 800,000 in 20 years, it’s vital that we come together to make the most of this enormous opportunity to build skills and prosperity,” Professor Bartlett said. “Council has been extremely forwardthinking in planning The Mill mixed-use precinct at Petrie where our campus is based. This will be a place for our researchers and business leaders to meet and innovate together, and for our students to learn and network.”

This year, UniSC was ranked the best public university in Queensland for the overall quality of experience for undergraduate students; it was also named among the world’s top two percent of universities in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings. The Mill at Moreton Bay is set to become an innovation hub twice the size of Brisbane’s CBD. City of Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery said investment opportunities in the precinct span education, health, tourism, entertainment and sport, as well as hightech advanced manufacturing, education and smart city infrastructure. “The Mill at Moreton Bay is projected to boost the economy by $950 million annually and generate 8,600 jobs,” Mayor Flannery said.

“The increasing number of visitors reflects the allure of our pristine waters and the diverse marine life that calls this place home. Moreton Bay’s rise as a premier destination is both thrilling and well- deserved.” Natassia Wheeler, Moreton Bay Region Industry & Tourism CEO, affirms the appeal. “Moreton Bay has truly come into its own as a tourism destination. As the visitor economy flourishes, we are excited to welcome travellers to experience the wonders of Moreton Bay firsthand, from our breathtaking landscapes to our sumptuous culinary offerings.” Moreton Bay entices travellers with its unparalleled charm and character, and the recent destination rebrand succinctly captures its essence with the tagline “That’s Deliciously Moreton.” This tagline encapsulates the region’s allure, from its tantalising gastronomy to its awe-inspiring landscapes.
